We present a formal geometric framework for the study of adiabatic quantum mechanics for arbitrary finite-dimensional non-degenerate Hamiltonians. This framework generalizes earlier holonomy interpretations of the geometric phase to non-cyclic states appearing for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We start with an investigation of the space of non-degenerate operators on a finite-dimensional state space. We then show how the energy bands of a Hamiltonian family form a covering space. Likewise, we show that the eigenrays form a bundle, a generalization of a principal bundle, which admits a natural connection yielding the (generalized) geometric phase. This bundle provides in addition a natural generalization of the quantum geometric tensor and derived tensors, and we show how it can incorporate the non-geometric dynamical phase as well. We finish by demonstrating how the bundle can be recast as a principal bundle, so that both the geometric phases and the permutations of eigenstates can be expressed simultaneously by means of standard holonomy theory.
Exceptional points, at which two or more eigenfunctions of a Hamiltonian coalesce, occur in non-Hermitian systems and lead to surprising physical effects. In particular, the behaviour of a system under parameter variation can differ significantly from the familiar Hermitian case in the presence of exceptional points. Here we analytically derive the probability of a non-adiabatic transition in a two-level system driven through two consecutive exceptional points at finite speed. The system is Hermitian far away from the exceptional points. In the adiabatic limit an equal redistribution between t…
We present calculations for the action of laser pulses on vibrational transfer within the H2+ and Na2 molecules in the presence of dissipation due to photodissociation of the molecule. The laser fields perform closed loops surrounding exceptional points in the laser parameter plane of intensity and wavelength. In principle the process should produce controlled vibrational transfers due to an adiabatic flip of the dressed eigenstates. We directly solve the Schrödinger equation with the complete time-dependent field instead of using the adiabatic Floquet formalism which initially suggested the d…
Exceptional points, the spectral degeneracy points in the complex parameter space, are fundamental to non-Hermitian quantum systems. The dynamics of non-Hermitian systems in the presence of exceptional points differ significantly from those of Hermitian ones. Here we investigate non-adiabatic transitions in non-Hermitian $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric systems, in which the exceptional points are driven through at finite speed which are quadratic or cubic functions of time. We identity different transmission dynamics separated by exceptional points, and derive analytical approximate formula…
The appearance of so-called exceptional points in the complex spectra of non-Hermitian systems is often associated with phenomena that contradict our physical intuition. One example of particular interest is the state-exchange process predicted for an adiabatic encircling of an exceptional point. In this work we analyse this and related processes for the generic system of two coupled oscillator modes with loss or gain. We identify a characteristic system evolution consisting of periods of quasi-stationarity interrupted by abrupt non-adiabatic transitions, and we present a qualitative and quant…
Non-Hermitian quantum systems with explicit time dependence are of ever-increasing importance. There are only a handful of models that have been analytically studied in this context. Here, a PT-symmetric non-Hermitian $N$-level Landau-Zener type problem with two exceptional points of $N$th order is introduced. The system is Hermitian for asymptotically large times, far away from the exceptional points, and has purely imaginary eigenvalues between the exceptional points. The full Landau-Zener transition probabilities are derived, and found to show a characteristic binomial behaviour. In the adi…
The efficient transfer of excitations between different levels of a quantum system is a task with many applications. Among the various protocols to carry out such a state transfer in driven systems, rapid adiabatic passage (RAP) is one of the most widely used. Here we show both theoretically and experimentally that adding a suitable amount of loss to the driven Hamiltonian turns a RAP protocol into a scheme for encircling an exceptional point including the chiral state transfer associated with it. Our work thus discloses an intimate connection between a whole body of literature on RAP and rece…
We study the behavior of the non-adiabatic population transfer between resonances at an exceptional point in the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. It is known that, when the exceptional point is encircled, the system always ends up in the same state, independent of the initial occupation within the two-dimensional subspace spanned by the states coalescing at the exceptional point. We verify this behavior for a realistic quantum system, viz. the hydrogen atom in crossed electric and magnetic fields. It is also shown that the non-adiabatic hypothesis can be violated when resonances in the vicinity …
Physical systems with loss or gain feature resonant modes that are decaying or growing exponentially with time. Whenever two such modes coalesce both in their resonant frequency and their rate of decay or growth, a so-called "exceptional point" occurs, around which many fascinating phenomena have recently been reported to arise. Particularly intriguing behavior is predicted to appear when encircling an exceptional point sufficiently slowly, like a state-flip or the accumulation of a geometric phase. Experiments dedicated to this issue could already successfully explore the topological structur…
We revisit the complex time method for the application to quantum dynamics as an exceptional point is encircled in the parameter space of the Hamiltonian. The basic idea of the complex time method is using complex contour integration to perform the first-order adiabatic perturbation integral. In this way, the quantum dynamical problem is transformed to a study of singularities in the complex time plane -- transition points -- which represent complex degeneracies of the adiabatic Hamiltonian as the time-dependent parameters defining the encircling contour are analytically continued to complex p…
We study state conversion in parity-time (PT) symmetry broken non-Hermitian two level system. We construct a theory and explain underlying mechanism for state conversion and define adiabatic evolutions in non-Hermitian systems. The adiabatic theorem can be used if initial state is an instantaneous eigenstate in Hermitian systems. We show that the system can adiabatically follow the modulationally stable instantaneous eigenstate sooner or later, regardless of initial state if the system parameters are varied slowly in non-Hermitian systems. We discuss the topological feature of dynamical circli…
H$_2^+$ is an ideal candidate for a detailed study of strong field coherent control strategies inspired by basic mechanisms referring to some specific photodissociation resonances. Two of them are considered in this work, namely: Zero-width resonances (ZWR) on one hand, and coalescing pairs of resonances at exceptional points (EP) on the other hand. An adiabatic transport theory based on Floquet Hamiltonian formalism is developed within the challenging context of multiphoton dynamics involving nuclear continua. It is shown that a rigorous treatment is only possible for ZWRs, whereas adiabatic …
The correspondence between exotic quantum holonomy that occurs in families of Hermitian cycles, and exceptional points (EPs) for non-Hermitian quantum theory is examined in quantum kicked tops. Under a suitable condition, an explicit expressions of the adiabatic parameter dependencies of quasienergies and stationary states, which exhibit anholonomies, are obtained. It is also shown that the quantum kicked tops with the complexified adiabatic parameter have a higher order EP, which is broken into lower order EPs with the application of small perturbations. The stability of exotic holonomy again…
In this paper, we discuss time evolution and adiabatic approximation in $PT$-symmetric quantum mechanics. we give the time evolving equation for a class of $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians and some conditions of the adiabatic approximation for the class of $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians.
A condition on the Hamiltonian of a time-dependent quantum mechanical system is derived which, if satisfied, implies optimal adiabaticity (defined below). The condition is expressed in terms of the Hamiltonian and in terms of the evolution operator related to it. Since the latter depends in a complicated way on the Hamiltonian, it is not yet clear how the condition can be used to extract useful information about the optimal Hamiltonian. The condition is tested on an exactly-soluble time-dependent problem (a spin in a magnetic field), where perfectly adiabatic evolution can be easily identified…
We argue with claims of the paper [Agostini F., Caprara S. and Ciccotti G., Europhys. Lett. EPL, 78 (2007) Art. 30001, 6] that the quantum-classic bracket introduced in [arXiv:quant-ph/0506122] produces "artificial coupling" and has "genuinely classical nature". Keywords: p-mechanics, quantum, classic, commutator, Poisson bracket, mixing, coupling, semi-classical
We consider the space of $n \times n$ non-Hermitian Hamiltonians ($n=2$, $3$, . . .) that are equivalent to a single $n\times n$ Jordan block. We focus on adiabatic transport around a closed path (i.e. a loop) within this space, in the limit as the time-scale $T=1/\varepsilon$ taken to traverse the loop tends to infinity. We show that, for a certain class of loops and a choice of initial state, the state returns to itself and acquires a complex phase that is $\varepsilon^{-1}$ times an expansion in powers of $\varepsilon^{1/n}$. The exponential of the term of $n$th order (which is equivalent t…
A new simple proof of the adiabatic theorem is given in the finite dimensional case for nondegenerate as well as degenerate states. The explicitly integrable two level system is considered as an example. It is demonstrated that the error estimate given by the adiabatic theorem can not be improved.
We show that the existence of exceptional polynomials leads to the presence of non-trivial supersymmetry. The existence of these polynomials reveals several distinct isospectral potentials for the Schrödinger equation. All Schrödinger equations having Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials as their solutions, have non-trivial supersymmetric partners with corresponding exceptional polynomials as solutions.
We consider an N-level non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with an exceptional point of order N. We define adiabatic equivalence in such systems and explore topological phase. We show that the topological exceptional states appear at the interface of topologically distinct systems. We discuss that topological states appear even in closed systems. We explore dynamical robustness of exceptional edge states.
Exceptional points (EPs) represent a distinct type of spectral singularity in non-Hermitian systems, and intriguing physics concepts have been studied with optical EPs recently. As a system beyond photonics, the mechanical oscillators coupling with many physical systems are expected to be further exploited EPs for mechanical sensing, topology energy transfer, nonreciprocal dynamics etc. In this study, we demonstrated on-chip mechanical EPs with a silicon optomechanical zipper cavity, wherein two near-degenerate mechanical breathing modes are coupled via a single co-localized optical mode. By t…
Adiabatic process has found many important applications in modern physics, the distinct merit of which is that it does not need accurate control over the timing of the process. However, it is a slow process, which limits the application in quantum computation, due to the limited coherent times of typical quantum systems. Here, we propose a scheme to implement quantum state conversion in opto-electro-mechanical systems via shortcut to adiabaticity, where the process can be greatly speeded up while the precise timing control is still not necessary. In our scheme, only by modifying the coupling s…
We study the energy-level evolution and ground-state cooling of mechanical resonators under a synthetic phononic gauge field. The tunable gauge phase is mediated by the phase difference between the $\mathcal{PT}$- and anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric mechanical couplings in a multimode optomechanical system. The transmission spectrum then exhibits the asymmetric Fano line shape or double optomechanically induced transparency by modulating the gauge phase. Moreover, the eigenvalues will collapse and become degenerate although the mechanical coupling is continuously increased. Such counterintuitive…
Two sets of infinitely many exceptional orthogonal polynomials related to the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials are presented. They are derived as the eigenfunctions of shape invariant and thus exactly solvable quantum mechanical Hamiltonians, which are deformations of those for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials in terms of a degree \ell (\ell=1,2,...) eigenpolynomial. These polynomials are exceptional in the sense that they start from degree \ell\ge1 and thus not constrained by any generalisation of Bochner's theorem.
We study mechanical cooling in systems of coupled passive (lossy) and active (with gain) optical resonators. We find that for a driving laser which is red-detuned with respect to the cavity frequency, the supermode structure of the system is radically changed, featuring the emergence of genuine high-order exceptional points. This in turn leads to giant enhancement of both the mechanical damping and the spring stiffness, facilitating low-power mechanical cooling in the vicinity of gain-loss balance. This opens up new avenues of steering micromechanical devices with exceptional points beyond the…

We consider quantum dynamics for which the strict adiabatic approximation fails but which do not escape too far from the adiabatic limit. To treat these systems we introduce a generalisation of the time dependent wave operator theory which is usually used to treat dynamics which do not escape too far from an initial subspace called the active space. Our generalisation is based on a time dependent adiabatic deformation of the active space. The geometric phases associated with the almost adiabatic representation are also derived. We use this formalism to study the adiabaticity of a dynamics surr…
We develop perturbative methods to study and control dynamical phenomena related to exceptional points in Non-Hermitian systems. In particular, we show how to find perturbative solutions based on the Magnus expansion that accurately describe the evolution of non-Hermitian systems when encircling an exceptional point. This allows us to use the recently proposed Magnus-based strategy for control to design fast non-reciprocal, topological operations whose fidelity error is orders of magnitude smaller than their much slower adiabatic counterparts.
A novel and readily understandable derivation of the Golden Rule of time dependent perturbation theory is presented. The derivation is based on adiabatic turning on of the perturbation as used, for instance, in some formal developments of scattering theory. Energy conservation is expressed in terms of an intuitively and physically appealing Lorentzian line shape rather than the artificial, oscillatory sin(x)=x type line shape that appears in conventional derivations. The conditions for the derivation's validity are compactly and conveniently expressed in the frequency/energy domain rather than…
The class of problems represented by frustrated cluster loops, FCL, is a robust set of problems that spans a wide range of computational difficulty and that are easy to determine what their solutions are. Here, we use frustrated cluster loops to test the relative performance of the D-Wave without post-processing and the D-Wave with multi-qubit correction (MQC) post-processing. MQC post-processing has shown itself exceptionally beneficial in improving the performance of the D-Wave 2000Q when processing difficult FCL problems.
The main challenge in deterministic quantum state transfer in long-distance quantum communications is the transmission losses in the communication channel. To overcome this limitation, here we use the adiabatic theorem and find a lossless evolution path between two remote mechanical modes. By adiabatic variation of the effective coupling strengths between the two nodes and the intermediate optical channel modes, we engineer a transmission path for the quantum state transfer that is decoupled from the decaying fiber modes. Using our proposed method we show that one obtains a quantum state trans…
Owing to the enormous interest the rapidly growing field of topological states of matter (TSM) has attracted in recent years, the main focus of this review is on the theoretical foundations of TSM. Starting from the adiabatic theorem of quantum mechanics which we present from a geometrical perspective, the concept of TSM is introduced to distinguish gapped many body ground states that have representatives within the class of non-interacting systems and mean field superconductors, respectively, regarding their global geometrical features. These classifying features are topological invariants de…
Intrinsic defects in optomechanical devices are generally viewed to be detrimental for achieving coherent amplification of phonons, and great care has thus been exercised in fabricating devices and materials with no (or a minimal number of) defects. Contrary to this view, here we show that, by surpassing an exceptional point (EP), both the mechanical gain and the phonon number can be enhanced despite increasing defect losses. This counterintuitive effect, well described by an effective non-Hermitian phonon-defect model, provides a mechanical analog of the loss-induced purely optical lasing. Th…
In recent years, one of the most interesting developments in quantum mechanics has been the construction of new exactly solvable potentials connected with the appearance of families of exceptional orthogonal polynomials (EOP) in mathematical physics. In contrast with families of (Jacobi, Laguerre and Hermite) classical orthogonal polynomials, which start with a constant, the EOP families begin with some polynomial of degree greater than or equal to one, but still form complete, orthogonal sets with respect to some positive-definite measure. We show how they may appear in the bound-state wavefu…
We show a parameter-dependent $3\times 3$ non-Hermitian matrix that exhibits both degeneracy and coalescence of eigenvalues at an exceptional point (Hermitian and non-Hermitian degeneracies). This simple non-Hermitian model is suitable for the discussion of those concepts in an undergraduate or graduate course on quantum-mechanics. We also study the symmetry group responsible for the degeneracy.
We consider the geometric phase and quantum tunneling in vicinity of diabolic and exceptional points. We show that the geometric phase associated with the degeneracy points is defined by the flux of complex magnetic monopole. In weak-coupling limit the leading contribution to the real part of geometric phase is given by the flux of the Dirac monopole plus quadrupole term, and the expansion for its imaginary part starts with the dipolelike field. For a two-level system governed by the generic non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, we derive a formula to compute the non-adiabatic complex geometric phase by …
A cyclic thermodynamic heat engine runs most efficiently if it is reversible. Carnot constructed such a reversible heat engine by combining adiabatic and isothermal processes for a system containing an ideal gas. Here, we present an example of a cyclic engine based on a single quantum-mechanical particle confined to a potential well. The efficiency of this engine is shown to equal the Carnot efficiency because quantum dynamics is reversible. The quantum heat engine has a cycle consisting of adiabatic and isothermal quantum processes that are close analogues of the corresponding classical proce…
We present a simple and pedagogical derivation of the quantum adiabatic theorem for two level systems (a single qubit) based on geometrical structures of quantum mechanics developed by Anandan and Aharonov, among others. We have chosen to use only the minimum geometric structure needed for an understanding of the adiabatic theorem for this case.
New exactly solvable rationally-extended radial oscillator and Scarf I potentials are generated by using a constructive supersymmetric quantum mechanical method based on a reparametrization of the corresponding conventional superpotential and on the addition of an extra rational contribution expressed in terms of some polynomial $g$. The cases where $g$ is linear or quadratic are considered. In the former, the extended potentials are strictly isospectral to the conventional ones with reparametrized couplings and are shape invariant. In the latter, there appears a variety of extended potentials…
Appearance of adiabatic geometric phase shift in the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics is studied using an exactly solvable model of 2D simple harmonic oscilator in Moyal plane, where momentum non-commutativity are also considered along with spatial noncommutativity. After finding a suitable Bopp shift, that bridges the noncommutative phase space operators with their effective commutative counterparts, having their dependence on the non-commutative parameters, we study the adiabatic evolution in the Heisenberg picture. An explicit expression for the geometric phase shift under adiaba…
We report on the experimental study of an exceptional point (EP) in a dissipative microwave billiard with induced time-reversal invariance (T) violation. The associated two-state Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian and non-symmetric. It is determined experimentally on a narrow grid in a parameter plane around the EP. At the EP the size of T violation is given by the relative phase of the eigenvector components. The eigenvectors are adiabatically transported around the EP, whereupon they gather geometric phases and in addition geometric amplitudes different from unity.

Quantum systems with adiabatic classical parameters are widely studied, e.g., in the modern holonomic quantum computation. We here provide complete geometric quantization of a Hamiltonian system with time-dependent parameters, without the adiabatic assumption. A Hamiltonian of such a system is affine in the temporal derivative of parameter functions. This leads to the geometric Berry factor phenomena.
The time evolution of periodically driven non-Hermitian systems is in general non-unitary but can be stable. It is hence of considerable interest to examine the adiabatic following dynamics in periodically driven non-Hermitian systems. We show in this work the possibility of piecewise adiabatic following interrupted by hopping between instantaneous system eigenstates. This phenomenon is first observed in a computational model and then theoretically explained, using an exactly solvable model, in terms of the Stokes phenomenon. In the latter case, the piecewise adiabatic following is shown to be…
An alternative interpretation of the quantum adiabatic approximation is presented. This interpretation is based on the ideas originally advocated by David Bohm in his quest for establishing a hidden variable alternative to quantum mechanics. It indicates that the validity of the quantum adiabatic approximation is a sufficient condition for the separability of the quantum action function in the time variable. The implications of this interpretation for Berry's adiabatic phase and its semi-classical limit are also discussed.
The asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM), which describes the interaction between a quantum harmonic oscillator and a biased qubit, arises naturally in circuit quantum electrodynamic circuits and devices. The existence of hidden symmetry in the AQRM leads to a rich energy landscape of conical intersections (CIs) and thus to interesting topological properties. However, current approximations to the AQRM fail to reproduce these CIs correctly. To overcome these limitations we propose a generalized adiabatic approximation (GAA) to describe the energy spectrum of the AQRM. This is achieved by combi…
