A new simple proof of the adiabatic theorem is given in the finite dimensional case for nondegenerate as well as degenerate states. The explicitly integrable two level system is considered as an example. It is demonstrated that the error estimate given by the adiabatic theorem can not be improved.
We present generalized adiabatic theorems for closed and open quantum systems that can be applied to slow modulations of rapidly varying fields, such as oscillatory fields that occur in optical experiments and light induced processes. The generalized adiabatic theorems show that a sufficiently slow modulation conserves the dynamical modes of time dependent reference Hamiltonians. In the limiting case of modulations of static fields, the standard adiabatic theorems are recovered. Applying these results to periodic fields shows that they remain in Floquet states rather than in energy eigenstates…
We generalize Kato's adiabatic theorem to nonunitary dynamics with an isospectral generator. This enables us to unify two strong-coupling limits: one driven by fast oscillations under a Hamiltonian, and the other driven by strong damping under a Lindbladian. We discuss the case where both mechanisms are present and provide nonperturbative error bounds. We also analyze the links with the quantum Zeno effect and dynamics.
The evolution of a driven quantum system is said to be adiabatic whenever the state of the system stays close to an instantaneous eigenstate of its time-dependent Hamiltonian. The celebrated quantum adiabatic theorem ensures that such pure state adiabaticity can be maintained with arbitrary accuracy, provided one chooses a small enough driving rate. Here, we extend the notion of quantum adiabaticity to closed quantum systems initially prepared at finite temperature. In this case adiabaticity implies that the (mixed) state of the system stays close to a quasi-Gibbs state diagonal in the basis o…
Adiabatensätze mit und ohne Spektrallückenbedingung
It has been recently reported that classical systems have speed limit for state evolution, although such a concept of speed limit had been considered to be unique to quantum systems. Owing to the speed limit for classical system, the lower bound for calculation time of simulated annealing with desired calculation accuracy can be derived. However, such a lower bound does not work as a criterion for completion of calculation in a practical time. In this paper, we derive an inequality for classical system analogous to the quantum adiabatic theorem that gives calculation time for an accuracy-guara…
We establish adiabatic theorems with and without spectral gap condition for general -- typically dissipative -- linear operators $A(t): D(A(t)) \subset X \to X$ with time-independent domains $D(A(t)) = D$ in some Banach space $X$. Compared to the previously known adiabatic theorems -- especially those without spectral gap condition -- we do not require the considered spectral values $λ(t)$ of $A(t)$ to be (weakly) semisimple. We also impose only fairly weak regularity conditions. Applications are given to slowly time-varying open quantum systems and to adiabatic switching processes.
We establish adiabatic theorems with and without spectral gap condition for general -- typically dissipative -- linear operators $A(t): D(A(t)) \subset X \to X$ with time-dependent domains $D(A(t))$ in some Banach space $X$. In these theorems, we do not require the considered spectral values $λ(t)$ of $A(t)$ to be (weakly) semisimple. We then apply our general theorems to the special case of skew-adjoint operators $A(t) = 1/i A_{a(t)}$ defined by symmetric sesquilinear forms $a(t)$ and thus generalize, in a very simple way, the only adiabatic theorem for operators with time-dependent domains k…
Propagators weakly associated to a family of Hamiltonians and the adiabatic theorem for the Landau Hamiltonian with a time-dependent Aharonov-Bohm flux
In these lecture notes, we review the adiabatic theorem in quantum mechanics, focusing on a recent extension to many-body systems. The role of locality is emphasized and the relation to the quasi-adiabatic flow discussed. An important application of these results to linear response theory is also reviewed.
We prove an adiabatic theorem for general densities of observables that are sums of local terms in finite systems of interacting fermions, without periodicity assumptions on the Hamiltonian and with error estimates that are uniform in the size of the system. Our result provides an adiabatic expansion to all orders, in particular, also for initial data that lie in eigenspaces of degenerate eigenvalues. Our proof is based on ideas from a recent work of Bachmann et al. who proved an adiabatic theorem for interacting spin systems. As one important application of this adiabatic theorem, we provide …
We discuss a one-dimensional version of the Landau-Pekar equations, which are a system of coupled differential equations with two different time scales. We derive an approximation on the slow time scale in the spirit of a non-linear adiabatic theorem. Dispersive estimates for solutions of the Schrödinger equation with time-dependent potential are a key technical ingredient in our proof.
In 2004 Ambainis and Regev formulated a certain form of quantum adiabatic theorem and provided an elementary proof which is especially accessible to computer scientists. Their result is achieved by discretizing the total adiabatic evolution into a sequence of unitary transformations acting on the quantum system. Here we continue this line of study by providing another elementary and shorter proof with improved bounds. Our key finding is a succinct integral representation of the difference between the target and the actual states, which yields an accurate estimation of the approximation error. …
We prove an adiabatic theorem for the Landau-Pekar equations. This allows us to derive new results on the accuracy of their use as effective equations for the time evolution generated by the Fröhlich Hamiltonian with large coupling constant $α$. In particular, we show that the time evolution of Pekar product states with coherent phonon field and the electron being trapped by the phonons is well approximated by the Landau-Pekar equations until times short compared to $α^2$.
The adiabatic piston problem is solved at the mesoscale using a Kinetic Theory approach. The problem is to determine the evolution towards equilibrium of two gases separated by a wall with only one degree of freedom (the adiabatic piston). A closed system of equations for the distribution functions of the gases conditioned to a position of the piston and the distribution function of the piston is derived from the Liouville equation, under the assumption of a generalized molecular chaos. It is shown that the resulting kinetic description has the canonical equilibrium as a steady-state solution.…
In the main part of this PhD thesis, we consider a periodically realized microscopic superconductor described by BCS theory, which is subject to external electromagnetic fields. We show that the superconductor is properly described by Ginzburg--Landau theory in the macroscopic and weak magnetic field limit. The main novelty of our results is to allow for a non-vanishing magnetic flux through the unit cell of the lattice of periodicity. These main results are supplemented by various unpublished notes in the field of BCS theory. Furthermore, we preface the presentation of these results with a co…
