We construct a functor from the category of $(\mathbb{Z},X)$-modules of Ranicki (cf. \cite{Ra92}) to the category of homotopy cosheaves of chain complexes of Ranicki-Weiss (cf. \cite{RaWei10}) inducing an equivalence on $L$-theory. The $L$-theory of $(\mathbb{Z},X)$-modules is central in the algebraic formulation of the surgery exact sequence and in the construction of the total surgery obstruction by Ranicki, as described in \cite{Ra79}. The symmetric $L$-theory of homotopy cosheaf complexes is used by Ranicki-Weiss in \cite{RaWei10}, to reprove the topological invariance of rational Pontryagin classes. The work presented here may be considered as an addendum to the latter article and suggests some translation of ideas of Ranicki into the language of homotopy chain complexes of cosheaves.
In this paper we prove an equivalence theorem originally observed by Robert MacPherson. On one side of the equivalence is the category of cosheaves that are constructible with respect to a locally cone-like stratification. Our constructibility condition is new and only requires that certain inclusions of open sets are sent to isomorphisms. On the other side of the equivalence is the category of functors from the entrance path category, which has points for objects and certain homotopy classes of paths for morphisms. When our constructible cosheaves are valued in $\mathsf{Set}$ we prove an addi…
Using methods developed by Franke, we obtain algebraic classification results for modules over certain symmetric ring spectra ($S$-algebras). In particular, for any symmetric ring spectrum $R$ whose graded homotopy ring $π_*R$ has graded global homological dimension 2 and is concentrated in degrees divisible by some natural number $N \geq 4$, we prove that the homotopy category of $R$-modules is equivalent to the derived category of the homotopy ring $π_*R$. This improves the Bousfield-Wolbert algebraic classification of isomorphism classes of objects of the homotopy category of $R$-modules. T…
The tensor functor from the category of $A_\infty$-algebras into the category of differential modules with $\infty$-simplicial faces is constructed. Further, it is showed that this functor sends homotopy equivalent $A_\infty$-algebras into homotopy equivalent differential modules with $\infty$-simplicial faces.
The dihedral homology functor $HD:A_\infty^{\rm inv}(K)\to GrM(K)$ from the category $A_\infty^{\rm inv}(K)$ of involutive $A_\infty$-algebras over any commutative unital ring $K$ to the category $GrM(K)$ of graded $K$-modules is constructed. Further, it is showed that this functor sends homotopy equivalences of involutive $A_\infty$-algebras into isomorphisms of graded modules.
In the present paper the cyclic homology functor from the category of $A_\infty$-algebras over any commutative unital ring $K$ to the category of graded $K$-modules is constructed. Further, it is showed that this functor sends homotopy equivalences of $A_\infty$-algebras into isomorphisms of graded modules. As a corollary, it is obtained that the cyclic homology of an $A_\infty$-algebra over any field is isomorphic to the cyclic homology of the $A_\infty$-algebra of homologies for the source $A_\infty$-algebra.
We establish model category structures on algebras and modules over operads in symmetric spectra, and study when a morphism of operads induces a Quillen equivalence between corresponding categories of algebras (resp. modules) over operads.
We address the (pointed) homotopy of crossed module morphisms in modified categories of interest; which generalizes the groups and various algebraic structures. We prove that, the homotopy relation gives rise to an equivalence relation; furthermore a groupoid structure, without any restriction on neither domain nor co-domain of the crossed module morphism. Additionally, we consider the particular cases such as associative algebras, Leibniz algebras, Lie algebras and dialgebras of crossed modules of this generalized homotopy definition. Then as the main part of the paper, we prove that the func…
We conduct a study of real-valued multi-parameter persistence modules as sheaves and cosheaves. Using the recent work on the homological algebra for persistence modules, we define two different convolution operations between derived complexes of persistence modules. We show that one of these operations is canonically isomorphic to the derived tensor product of graded modules. We give formulas for computing convolutions between single-parameter interval decomposable modules. Our convolution operations are analogous to the convolution of derived complexes of constructible sheaves on $\mathbb{R}^…
It is well-known how to compute the structure of the second homotopy group of a space, $X$, as a module over the fundamental group, $π_1X$, using the homology of the universal cover and the Hurewicz isomorphism. We describe a new method to compute the third homotopy group, $π_3 X$, as a module over $π_1 X$. Moreover, we determine $π_3 X$ as an extension of $π_1 X$-modules derived from Whitehead's Certain Exact Sequence. Our method is based on the theory of quadratic modules. Explicit computations are carried out for pseudo-projective 3-spaces $X = S^1 \cup e^2 \cup e^3$ consisting of exactly o…
Crossed modules are known to be a model of pointed connected homotopy 2-types; formally, the homotopy category of crossed modules is equivalent to the category of pointed connected homotopy 2-types. In forming the homotopy category of crossed modules, one must resort to computing derived morphisms using non-constructive topological methods, but Behrang Noohi was able to find an algebraic model of these derived morphisms called butterflies. The result is a completely algebraic model of pointed connected homotopy 2-types. Reduced crossed complexes are a generalization of crossed modules and mode…
Modern categories of spectra such as that of Elmendorf et al equipped with strictly symmetric monoidal smash products allows the introduction of symmetric monoids providing a new way to study highly coherent commutative ring spectra. These have categories of modules which are generalisations of the classical categories of spectra that correspond to modules over the sphere spectrum; passing to their derived or homotopy categories leads to new contexts in which homotopy theory can be explored. In this paper we describe some of the tools available for studying these `brave new homotopy theories' …
We describe a general method for algorithmic construction of G-equivariant chain homotopy equivalences from non-equivariant ones. As a consequence, we obtain an algorithm for computing equivariant (co)homology of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces K(pi,n), where pi is a finitely generated ZG-module. This result will be used in a forthcoming paper to construct equivariant Postnikov towers of simply connected spaces with free actions of a finite group G and further to compute stable equivariant homotopy classes of maps between such spaces. The methods of this paper work for modules over any non-negatively…
The question was asked by Niranjan Ramachandran: how to describe the fundamental groupoid of LX, the free loop space of a space X? We give an answer by assuming X to be the classifying space of a crossed module over a group, and then describe completely a crossed module over a groupoid determining the homotopy 2-type of LX. The method requires detailed information on the monoidal closed structure on the category of crossed complexes.
We address the (pointed) homotopy theory of 2-crossed modules (of groups), which are known to faithfully represent Gray 3-groupoids, with a single object, and also connected homotopy 3-types. The homotopy relation between 2-crossed module maps will be defined in a similar way to Crans' 1-transfors between strict Gray functors, however being pointed, thus this corresponds to Baues' homotopy relation between quadratic module maps. Despite the fact that this homotopy relation between 2-crossed module morphisms is not, in general, an equivalence relation, we prove that if $A$ and $A'$ are 2-crosse…
Let k be a field and denote by SH(k) the motivic stable homotopy category. Recall its full subcategory HI_0(k) of effective homotopy modules. Write NAlg(HI_0(k)) for the category of normed motivic spectra with underlying spectrum an effective homotopy module. In this article we provide an explicit description of NAlg(HI_0(k)) as the category of sheaves with generalized transfers and étale norms, and explain how this is closely related to the classical notion of Tambara functors.
We address the homotopy theory of 2-crossed modules of commutative algebras. In particular, we define the concept of a 2-fold homotopy between a pair of 1-fold homotopies connecting 2-crossed module maps $\A \to \A'$. We also prove that if the domain 2-crossed module $\A$ is free up to order one (i.e. if the bottom algebra is a polynomial algebra) then we have a 2-groupoid of 2-crossed module maps $\A \to \A'$ and their homotopies and 2-fold homotopies.
We develop a mechanism of "isotropy separation for compact objects" that explicitly describes an invertible $G$-spectrum through its collection of geometric fixed points and gluing data located in certain variants of the stable module category. As an application, we carry out a complete analysis of invertible G-spectra in the case $G=A_5$. A further application is given by showing that the Picard groups of $\mathrm{Sp}^G$ and a category of derived Mackey functors agree.
We address the homotopy theory of 2-crossed modules of commutative algebras, which are equivalent to simplicial commutative algebras with Moore complex of length two. In particular, we construct for maps of 2-crossed modules a homotopy relation, and prove that it yields an equivalence relation in very unrestricted cases (freeness up to order one of the domain 2-crossed module). This latter condition strictly includes the case when the domain is cofibrant. Furthermore, we prove that this notion of homotopy yields a groupoid with objects being the 2-crossed module maps between two fixed 2-crosse…
Let $R$ be a ring spectrum and $ E\to X$ an $R$-module bundle of rank $n$. Our main result is to identify the homotopy type of the group-like monoid of homotopy automorphisms of this bundle, $hAut^R(E)$. This will generalize the result regarding $R$-line bundles previously proven by the authors. The main application is the calculation of the homotopy type of $BGL_n(End ((L))$ where $L \to X$ is any $R$-line bundle, and $End (L)$ is the ring spectrum of endomorphisms. In the case when such a bundle is the fiberwise suspension spectrum of a principal bundle over a manifold, $G \to P \to M$, this…
For a space X, we define Frobenius and Verschiebung operations on the nil-terms NA^{fd} (X) in the algebraic K-theory of spaces, in three different ways. Two applications are included. Firstly, we obtain that the homotopy groups of NA^{fd} (X) are either trivial or not finitely generated as abelian groups. Secondly, the Verschiebung defines a Z[N_x]-module structure on the homotopy groups of NA^{fd} (X), with N_x the multiplicative monoid. We also we give a calculation of the homotopy groups of the nil-terms NA^{fd} (*) after p-completion for an odd prime p as Z_p[N_x]-modules up to dimension …
We study the interplay of the homotopy coniveau tower, the Rost-Schmid complex of a strictly homotopy invariant sheaf, and homotopy modules. For a strictly homotopy invariant sheaf $M$, smooth $k$-scheme $X$ and $q \geqslant 0$ we construct a novel cycle complex $C^*(X, M, q)$ and we prove that in favorable cases, $C^*(X, M, q)$ is equivalent to the homotopy coniveau tower $M^{(q)}(X)$. To do so we establish moving lemmas for the Rost-Schmid complex. As an application we deduce a cycle complex model for Milnor-Witt motivic cohomology. Furthermore we prove that if $M$ is a strictly homotopy inv…
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we prove higher homotopy excision and higher Blakers-Massey theorems, and their duals, for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra).
Given a diagram of rings, one may consider the category of modules over them. We are interested in the homotopy theory of categories of this type: given a suitable diagram of model categories M(s) (as s runs through the diagram), we consider the category of diagrams where the object X(s) at s comes from M(s). We develop model structures on such categories of diagrams, and Quillen adjunctions that relate categories based on different diagram shapes. Under certain conditions, cellularizations (or right Bousfield localizations) of these adjunctions induce Quillen equivalences. As an application w…
Let $R$ be any ring with identity. We show that the homotopy category of all acyclic chain complexes of pure-projective $R$-modules is a compactly generated triangulated category. We do this by constructing abelian model structures that put this homotopy category into a recollement with two other compactly generated triangulated categories: The usual derived category of $R$ and the pure derived category of $R$. This also gives a new model for the derived category.
Using stably free non-free relation modules we construct an infinite collection of 2-dimensional homotopy types, each of Euler-characteristic one and with trefoil fundamental group. This provides an affirmative answer to a question asked by Berridge and Dunwoody [J. London Math. Soc. 19 (1979) 433-436]. We also give new examples of exotic relation modules. We show that the relation module associated with the generating set x, y^4 for the Baumslag-Solitar group <x, y | xy^2x^{-1}=y^3> is stably free non-free of rank one.
We show that mapping spaces in the p-local motivic stable category over an Fp-scheme are strictly commutative monoids (whence HZ-modules) in a canonical way.
In this paper we describe and continue the study begun by the author, Jones, and Segal, of the homotopy theory that underlies Floer theory. In that paper the authors addressed the question of realizing a Floer complex as the celluar chain complex of a CW -spectrum or pro-spectrum, where the attaching maps are determined by the compactified moduli spaces of connecting orbits. The basic obstructions to the existence of this realization are the smoothness of these moduli spaces, and the existence of compatible collections of framings of their stable tangent bundles. In this note we describe a gen…
We show that the monoidal product on the stable homotopy category of spectra is essentially unique. This strengthens work of this author with Schwede on the uniqueness of models of the stable homotopy theory of spectra. As an application we show that with an added assumption about underlying model structures Margolis' axioms uniquely determine the stable homotopy category of spectra up to monoidal equivalence. Also, the equivalences constructed here give a unified construction of the known equivalences of the various symmetric monoidal categories of spectra (S-modules, \W-spaces, orthogonal sp…
We introduce the notion of homotopy inner products for any cyclic quadratic Koszul operad $\mathcal O$, generalizing the construction already known for the associative operad. This is done by defining a colored operad $\hat{\mathcal O}$, which describes modules over $\mathcal O$ with invariant inner products. We show that $\hat{\mathcal O}$ satisfies Koszulness and identify algebras over a resolution of $\hat{\mathcal O}$ in terms of derivations and module maps. An application to Poincaré duality on the chain level of a suitable topological space is given.
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we describe and study a homotopy completion tower for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra). We prove a strong convergence theorem that for 0-connected algebras and modules over a (-1)-connected operad, the homotopy completion tower interpolates (in a strong sense) between topological Quillen homology and the identity functor. By systematically exploiting strong convergence, we prove several theorems concerning the topological Quillen homology of algebras an…
The bootstrap category in E-theory for C*-algebras over a finite space X is embedded into the homotopy category of certain diagrams of K-module spectra. Therefore it has infinite n-order for every n. The same holds for the bootstrap category in G-equivariant E-theory for a compact group G and for the Spanier--Whitehead category in connective E-theory.
We explain how the computation of induced crossed modules allows the computation of certain homotopy 2-types and, in particular, second homotopy groups. We discuss various issues involved in computing induced crossed modules and give some examples and applications.
Let $R$ be a ring and Ch($R$) the category of chain complexes of $R$-modules. We put an abelian model structure on Ch($R$) whose homotopy category is equivalent to $K(Proj)$, the homotopy category of all complexes of projectives. However, the cofibrant objects are not complexes of projectives, but rather all complexes of flat modules. The trivial objects are what Positselski calls contraacyclic complexes and so the homotopy category coincides with his contraderived category. We in fact construct this model on the category of chain complexes of quasi-coherent sheaves on any scheme $X$ admitting…
Let n \geq 1 and let p be any prime. Also, let E_n be the Lubin-Tate spectrum, G_n the extended Morava stabilizer group, and K(n) the nth Morava K-theory spectrum. Then work of Devinatz and Hopkins and some results due to Behrens and the first author of this note, show that if X is a finite spectrum, then the localization L_{K(n)}(X) is equivalent to the homotopy fixed point spectrum (L_{K(n)}(E_n \wedge X))^{hG_n}, which is formed with respect to the continuous action of G_n on L_{K(n)}(E_n \wedge X). In this note, we show that this equivalence holds for any (S-cofibrant) spectrum X. Also, we…
We prove that any category of props in a symmetric monoidal model category inherits a model structure. We devote an appendix, about half the size of the paper, to the proof of the model category axioms in a general setting. We need the general argument to address the case of props in topological spaces and dg-modules over an arbitrary ring, but we give a less technical proof which applies to the category of props in simplicial sets, simplicial modules, and dg-modules over a ring of characteristic 0. We apply the model structure of props to the homotopical study of algebras over a prop. Our goa…
The paper constructs an `exotic' algebraic 2-complex over the generalized quaternion group of order 28, with the boundary maps given by explicit matrices over the group ring. This result depends on showing that a certain ideal of the group ring is stably free but not free. As it is not known whether the complex constructed here is geometrically realizable, this example is proposed as a suitable test object in the investigation of an open problem of C.T.C. Wall, now referred to as the D(2)-problem.
We show that topological Quillen homology of algebras and modules over operads in symmetric spectra can be calculated by realizations of simplicial bar constructions. Working with several model category structures, we give a homotopical proof after showing that certain homotopy colimits in algebras and modules over operads can be easily understood. A key result here, which lies at the heart of this paper, is showing that the forgetful functor commutes with certain homotopy colimits. We also prove analogous results for algebras and modules over operads in unbounded chain complexes.
A monoidal model category is a model category with a compatible closed monoidal structure. Such things abound in nature; simplicial sets and chain complexes of abelian groups are examples. Given a monoidal model category, one can consider monoids and modules over a given monoid. We would like to be able to study the homotopy theory of these monoids and modules. This question was first addressed by Stefan Schwede and Brooke Shipley in "Algebras and modules in monoidal model categories", who showed that under certain conditions, there are model categories of monoids and of modules over a given m…
This dissertation comprises three collections of results, all united by a common theme. The theme is the study of categories via algebraic techniques, considering categories themselves as algebraic objects. This algebraic approach to category theory is central to noncommutative algebraic geometry, as realized by recent advances in the study of noncommutative motives. We have success proving algebraic results in the general setting of symmetric monoidal and semiring $\infty$-categories, which categorify abelian groups and rings, respectively. For example, we prove that modules over the semiring…
We extend Schwede's work on the unstable global homotopy theory of orthogonal spaces and $\mathcal{L}$-spaces to the category of $*$-modules (i.e., unstable $S$-modules). We prove a theorem which transports model structures and their properties from $\mathcal{L}$-spaces to $*$-modules and show that the resulting global model structure for $*$-modules is monoidally Quillen equivalent to that of orthogonal spaces. As a consequence, there are induced Quillen equivalences between the associated model categories of monoids, which identify equivalent models for the global homotopy theory of $A_\inft…
We describe the formal properties of cellularization functors in triangulated categories and study the preservation of ring and module structures under these functors in stable homotopy categories in the sense of Hovey, Palmieri and Strickland, such as the homotopy category of spectra or the derived category of a commutative ring. We prove that cellularization functors preserve modules over connective rings but they do not preserve rings in general (even if the ring is connective or the cellularization functor is triangulated). As an application of these results, we describe the cellularizatio…
