For each finite dimensional, simple, complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ and each root of unity $ξ$ (with some mild restriction on the order) one can define the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev (WRT) quantum invariant $τ_M^{\mathfrak g}(ξ)\in \mathbb C$ of oriented 3-manifolds $M$. In the present paper we construct an invariant $J_M$ of integral homology spheres $M$ with values in the cyclotomic completion $\widehat {\mathbb Z [q]}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb Z [q]$, such that the evaluation of $J_M$ at each root of unity gives the WRT quantum invariant of $M$ at that root of unity. This result generalizes the case ${\mathfrak g}=sl_2$ proved by the first author. It follows that $J_M$ unifies all the quantum invariants of $M$ associated with $\mathfrak g$, and represents the quantum invariants as a kind of "analytic function" defined on the set of roots of unity. For example, $τ_M(ξ)$ for all roots of unity are determined by a "Taylor expansion" at any root of unity, and also by the values at infinitely many roots of unity of prime power orders. It follows that WRT quantum invariants $τ_M(ξ)$ for all roots of unity are determined by the Ohtsuki series, which can be regarded as the Taylor expansion at $q=1$, and hence by the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki invariant. Another consequence is that the WRT quantum invariants $τ_M^{ \mathfrak g}(ξ)$ are algebraic integers. The construction of the invariant $J_M$ is done on the level of quantum group, and does not involve any finite dimensional representation, unlike the definition of the WRT quantum invariant. Thus, our construction gives a unified, "representation-free" definition of the quantum invariants of integral homology spheres.
We show how the periodicity of a homology sphere is reflected in the Reshetikhin-Turaev-Witten invariants of the manifold. These yield a criterion for the periodicity of a homology sphere.
In this thesis, we give a unification of the quantum WRT invariants. Given a rational homology 3-sphere M and a link L inside, we define the unified invariants, such that the evaluation of these invariants at a root of unity equals the corresponding quantum WRT invariant. In the SU(2) case, we assume the order of the first homology group of the manifold to be odd. Therefore, for rational homology 3-spheres, our invariants dominate the whole set of SO(3) quantum WRT invariants and, for manifolds with the order of the first homology group odd, the whole set of SU(2) quantum WRT invariants. We fu…
We will announce some results on the values of quantum sl_2 invariants of knots and integral homology spheres. Lawrence's universal sl_2 invariant of knots takes values in a fairly small subalgebra of the center of the h-adic version of the quantized enveloping algebra of sl_2. This implies an integrality result on the colored Jones polynomials of a knot. We define an invariant of integral homology spheres with values in a completion of the Laurent polynomial ring of one variable over the integers which specializes at roots of unity to the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants. The definition o…
Given a rational homology 3-sphere M with the first integral homology of rank b and a link L inside M, colored by odd numbers, we construct a unified invariant I_{M,L} belonging to a modification of the Habiro ring where b is inverted. Our unified invariant dominates the whole set of the SO(3) Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of the pair (M,L). If b=1 and L is empty, I_M coincides with Habiro's invariant of integral homology 3-spheres. For b>1, the unified invariant defined by the third author is determined by I_M. One of the applications are the new Ohtsuki series (perturbative expansions…
A theorem of Kirby states that two framed links in the 3-sphere produce orientation-preserving homeomorphic results of surgery if they are related by a sequence of stabilization and handle-slide moves. The purpose of the present paper is twofold: First, we give a sufficient condition for a sequence of handle-slides on framed links to be able to be replaced with a sequences of algebraically canceling pairs of handle-slides. Then, using the first result, we obtain a refinement of Kirby's calculus for integral homology spheres which involves only +/-1-framed links with zero linking numbers.
In this paper we present our results on the homology cobordism group $\Th$ of the oriented integral homology 3-spheres. We specially emphasize the role played in the subject by the gauge theory including Floer homology and invariants by Donaldson and Seiberg -- Witten.
We construct power series invariants of rational homology 3-spheres from quantum PSU(n)-invariants. The power series can be regarded as perturbative invariants corresponding to the contribution of the trivial connection in the hypothetical Witten's integral. This generalizes a result of Ohtsuki (the $n=2$ case) which led him to the definition of finite type invariants of 3-manifolds. The proof utilizes some symmetry properties of quantum invariants (of links) derived from the theory of affine Lie algebras and the theory of the Kontsevich integral.
In a recent paper we defined a new filtration of the mapping class group--the "Lagrangian" filtration. We here determine the successive quotients of this filtration, up to finite index. As an application we show that, for any additive invariant of finite-type (e.g. the Casson invariant), and any level of the Lagrangian filtration, there is a homology 3-sphere which has a Heegaard decomposition whose gluing diffeomorphism lies at that level, on which this invariant is non-zero. In a final section we examine the relationship between the Johnson and Lagrangian filtrations.
We prove a basic inequality for the d-invariants of a splice of knots in homology spheres. As a result, we are able to prove a new relation on the rank of reduced Floer homology under maps between Seifert fibered homology spheres, improving results of the first and second authors. As a corollary, a degree one map between two aspherical Seifert homology spheres is homotopic to a homeomorphism if and only if the Heegaard Floer homologies are isomorphic.
We show that among Seifert fibered integer homology spheres, Poincare sphere (with either orientation) is the only non-trivial example which has trivial Heegaard Floer homology. Together with an earlier result, this shows that if an integer homology sphere has trivial Heegaard Floer homology, then it is a connected sum of a number of Poincare spheres and hyperbolic homology spheres.
In this paper we answer the question posed by M.~Atiyah and give an explicit formula for Floer homology of Brieskorn homology spheres in terms of their branching sets over the 3--sphere. We further show how Floer homology is related to other invariants of knots and 3--manifolds, among which are the $\barμ$--invariant of W.~Neumann and L.~Siebenmann and the Jones polynomial. Essential progress is made in proving the homology cobordism invariance of our own $ν$--invariant.
We prove Mayberry-Murasugi's formula for links in homology 3-spheres, which was proved before only for links in the 3-sphere. Our proof uses Franz-Reidemeister torsions.
We show that a graph manifold which is a Z-homology 3-sphere not homeomorphic to either the 3-sphere or the Poincaré homology 3-sphere admits a horizontal foliation. This combines with known results to show that the conditions of not being an L-space, of having a left-orderable fundamental group, and of admitting a co-oriented taut foliation, are equivalent for graph manifold Z-homology 3-spheres.
The cosmetic surgery conjecture is a longstanding conjecture in 3-manifold theory. We present a theorem about exceptional cosmetic surgery for homology spheres. Along the way we prove that if the surgery is not a small seifert $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-homology sphere or a toroidal irreducible non-Seifert surgery then there is at most one pair of exceptional truly cosmetic slope. We also prove that toroidal truly cosmetic surgeries on integer homology spheres must be integer homology spheres.
In this short note, we prove that if a knot in the Poincare homology sphere is homotopically essential, then it does not admit any purely cosmetic surgeries.
For each rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ which bounds simply connected definite 4-manifolds of both signs, we construct an infinite family of irreducible rational homology 3-spheres which are homology cobordant to $Y$ but cannot bound any simply connected definite 4-manifold. As a corollary, for any coprime integers $p,q$, we obtain an infinite family of irreducible rational homology 3-spheres which are homology cobordant to the lens space $L(p,q)$ but cannot obtained by a knot surgery.
Hedden defined two knots in each lens space that, through analogies with their knot Floer homology and doubly pointed Heegaard diagrams of genus one, may be viewed as generalizations of the two trefoils in S^3. Rasmussen shows that when the `left-handed' one is in the homology class of the dual to a Berge knot of type VII, it admits an L-space homology sphere surgery. In this note we give a simple proof that these L-space homology spheres are always the Poincaré homology sphere.
We establish three rank inequalities for the reduced flavor of Heegaard Floer homology of Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. Combining these inequalities with the known classifications of non-zero degree maps between Seifert fibered spaces, we prove that a map f from Y' to Y between Seifert homology spheres yields the inequality that |deg f| rank HFred(Y) is at most rank HFred(Y'). These inequalities are also applied in conjunction with an algorithm of Nemethi to give a method to solve the botany problem for the Heegaard Floer homology of these manifolds.
Using the Heegaard Floer homology of Ozsvath and Szabo we investigate obstructions to definite intersection pairings bounded by rational homology spheres. As an application we obtain new lower bounds for the four-ball genus of Montesinos links.
For an integral homology 3-sphere embedded asymptotically flatly in an Euclidean space, we find a natural framing extending the standard trivialization on the asymptotically flat part.
A regular fiber of the Seifert fibering of the Poincaré homology sphere admits a Dehn surgery to $L(2,1)\#L(3,2)\#L(5,4)$. We prove that this is the only knot in the Poincaré homology sphere with a surgery to a connected sum of more than two lens spaces.
It is known by the author that there exist 20 families of Dehn surgeries in the Poincaré homology sphere yielding lens spaces. In this paper, we give the concrete knot diagrams of the families and extend them to families of lens space surgeries in Brieskorn homology spheres. We illustrate families of lens space surgeries in $Σ(2,3,6n\pm1)$ and $Σ(2,2s+1,2(2s+1)n\pm1)$ and so on. As other examples, we give lens space surgeries in graph homology spheres, which are obtained by splicing two Brieskorn homology spheres.
A theory of signatures for odd-dimensional links in rational homology spheres is studied via their generalized Seifert surfaces. The jump functions of signatures are shown invariant under appropriately generalized concordance and a special care is given to accommodate 1-dimensional links with mutual linking. Furthermore our concordance theory of links in rational homology spheres remains highly nontrivial after factoring out the contribution from links in integral homology spheres.
We present infinitely many homology spheres which contain two distinct knots whose 0-surgeries are $S^1 \times S^2$. This resolves a question posed by Kirby and Melvin in 1978.
We examine surgery on a knot in $S^3$ to determine surgery obstructions to Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. We find such surgery obstructions using Heegaard Floer, Knot Floer homology and the mapping cone formula for computing Heegaard Floer homology of surgery on a knot. Here however, we take a different approach and use the number of singular fibers of a Seifert fibered integral homology sphere, which is the toroidal structure, to find obstructions. This approach allows us to show that genus one knots cannot yield Seifert fibered integral homology spheres with six or more singular …
This paper gives infinitely many examples of non L-space irreducible integer homology 3-spheres whose fundamental groups do not have nontrivial $\widetilde{PSL_2(\mathbb{R})}$ representations.
It was shown in my earlier article that the splice diagram of a rational homology sphere graph manifold determines the manifolds universal abelian cover. In this article we use the proof of this to give a condition on the splice diagram to determine when the universal abelian cover itself is a rational homology sphere.
We consider the problem when lens spaces are given from homology spheres, and demonstrate that many lens spaces are obtained from L-space homology sphere which the Ozsváth Szabó's correction term $d(Y)$ is equal to 2. We show an inequality of slope and genus when $Y$ is L-space and $Y_p(K)$ is lens space.
We show that the perturbative ${\frak g}$ invariant of rational homology 3-spheres can be recovered from the LMO invariant for any simple Lie algebra ${\frak g}$, i.e, the LMO invariant is universal among the perturbative invariants. This universality was conjectured in [25]. Since the perturbative invariants dominate the quantum invariants of integral homology 3-spheres [13,14,15], this implies that the LMO invariant dominates the quantum invariants of integral homology 3-spheres.
We derive a formula for the $\barμ$-invariant of a Seifert fibered homology sphere in terms of the eta-invariant of its Dirac operator. As a consequence, we obtain a vanishing result for the index of certain Dirac operators on plumbed 4-manifolds bounding such spheres.
Auckly gave two examples of irreducible integer homology spheres (one toroidal and one hyperbolic) which are not surgery on a knot in the three-sphere. Using Heegaard Floer homology, the authors and Karakurt provided infinitely many small Seifert fibered examples. In this note, we extend those results to give infinitely many hyperbolic examples, as well as infinitely many examples with arbitrary JSJ decomposition.
We describe necessary and sufficient conditions for a knot in an L-space to have an L-space homology sphere surgery. We use these conditions to reformulate a conjecture of Berge about which knots in S^3 admit lens space surgeries.
We prove that the mod Z reduction of the torsion of a rational homology 3-sphere is completely determined by three data: a certain canonical spin^c structure, the linking form and a Q/Z-valued constant c. This constant is a new topological invariant of the rational homology sphere. Experimentations with lens spaces suggest this constant may be as powerful an invariant as the torsion itself.
Any knot in $S^3$ may be reduced to a slice knot by crossing changes. Indeed, this slice knot can be taken to be the unknot. In this paper we study the question of when the same holds for knots in homology spheres. We show that a knot in a homology sphere is nullhomotopic in a smooth homology ball if and only if that knot is smoothly concordant to a knot which is homotopic to a smoothly slice knot. As a consequence, we prove that the equivalence relation on knots in homology spheres given by cobounding immersed annuli in a homology cobordism is generated by concordance in homology cobordisms t…
In this paper we construct families of homology spheres which bound 4-manifolds with intersection forms isomorphic to $-E_8$. We show that these families have arbitrary large correction terms. This result says that among homology spheres, the difference of the maximal rank of minimal sub-lattice of definite filling and the maximal rank of even definite filling is arbitrarily large.
In this paper, we study various homology cobordism invariants for Seifert fibered integral homology 3-spheres derived from Heegaard Floer homology. Our main tool is lattice homology, a combinatorial invariant defined by Ozsváth-Szabó and Némethi. We reprove the fact that the $d$-invariants of Seifert homology spheres $Σ(a_1,a_2,\dots,a_n)$ and $Σ(a_1,a_2,\dots,a_n+a_1a_2\cdots a_{n-1})$ are the same using an explicit understanding of the behavior of the numerical semigroup minimally generated by $a_1a_2\cdots a_n/a_i$ for $i\in[1,n]$. We also study the maximal monotone subroots of the lattice …
We define invariants $\frak{ds}$ and $\overline{\frak{ds}}$, which are the maximal and minimal second Betti number divided by $8$ among definite spin boundings of a homology sphere. The similar invariants $g_8$ and $\overline{g_8}$ are defined by the maximal (or minimal) product sum of $E_8$-form of bounding 4-manifolds. We compute these invariants for some homology spheres. We construct $E_8$-boundings for some of Brieskorn 3-spheres $Σ(2,3,12n+5)$ by handle decomposition. As a by-product of the construction, some negative classes which consist of addition of several fiber classes plus one se…
The only finite nonabelian simple group acting on a homology 3-sphere - necessarily non-freely - is the dodecahedral group $\Bbb A_5 \cong {\rm PSL}(2,5)$ (in analogy, the only finite perfect group acting freely on a homology 3-sphere is the binary dodecahedral group $\Bbb A_5^* \cong {\rm SL}(2,5)$). In the present paper we show that the only finite simple groups acting on a homology 4-sphere, and in particular on the 4-sphere, are the alternating or linear fractional groups groups $\Bbb A_5 \cong {\rm PSL}(2,5)$ and $\Bbb A_6 \cong {\rm PSL}(2,9)$. From this we deduce a short list of groups …
We prove that if an integer homology three-sphere contains an embedded incompressible torus, then its fundamental group admits irreducible SU(2)-representations. Our methods use instanton Floer homology, and in particular the surgery exact triangle, holonomy perturbations, and a non-vanishing result due to Kronheimer-Mrowka, as well as results about surgeries on cables due to Gordon.
We show that if K is a non-trivial knot inside a homology sphere X, the rank of the knot Floer homology group associated with K is strictly bigger than the rank of the Heegaard Floer homology group associated with X.
A finite nonabelian simple group does not admit a free action on a homology sphere, and the only finite simple group which acts on a homology sphere with at most 0-dimensional fixed point sets ("pseudofree action") is the alternating group A_5 acting on the 2-sphere. Our first main theorem is the finiteness result that there are only finitely many finite simple groups which admit a smooth action on a homology sphere with at most d-dimensional fixed points sets, for a fixed d. We then go on proving that the finite simple groups acting on a homology sphere with at most 1-dimensional fixed point …
We prove that an integral homology 3-sphere is S^3 if and only if it admits four periodic diffeomorphisms of odd prime orders whose space of orbits is S^3. As an application we show that an irreducible integral homology sphere which is not S^3 is the cyclic branched cover of odd prime order of at most four knots in S^3. A result on the structure of finite groups of odd order acting on integral homology spheres is also obtained.
In this note, we collect various properties of Seifert homology spheres from the viewpoint of Dehn surgery along a Seifert fiber. We expect that many of these are known to various experts, but include them in one place which we hope to be useful in the study of concordance and homology cobordism.
We give some constraints on intersection forms of spin 4-manifolds bounded by Seifert rational homology 3-spheres in terms of the $\barμ$ invariant and compare them with those in terms of the $κ$ invariant. We also show that the difference between $κ$ and $-\barμ$ for a Seifert rational homology 3-sphere is at most 2, and under certain extra conditions the difference is 0.
We show some computations on representations of the fundamental group in SL(2;C) and Reidemeister torsion for a homology 3-sphere obtained by Dehn surgery along the figure-eight knot. This is the second version. We recorrected several errors in the first version.
For smooth embeddings of an integral homology 3-sphere in the 6-sphere, we define an integer invariant in terms of their Seifert surfaces. Our invariant gives a bijection between the set of smooth isotopy classes of such embeddings and the integers. It also gives rise to a complete invariant for homology bordism classes of all embeddings of homology 3-spheres in the 6-sphere. As a consequence, we show that two embeddings of an oriented integral homology 3-sphere in the 6-sphere are isotopic if and only if they are homology bordant. We also relate our invariant to the Rohlin invariant and accor…
Let $K$ denote a knot inside the homology sphere $Y$. The zero-framed longitude of $K$ gives the complement of $K$ in $Y$ the structure of a bordered three-manifold, which may be denoted by $Y(K)$. We compute the quasi-isomorphism type of the bordered Floer complex of $Y(K)$ in terms of the knot Floer complex associated with $K$. As a corollary, we show that if a homology sphere has the same Heegaard Floer homology as $S^3$ it does not contain any incompressible tori. Consequently, if $Y$ is an irreducible homology sphere $L$-space then $Y$ is either $S^3$, or the Poicaré sphere $Σ(2,3,5)$, or…
We define an invariant of rational homology 3-spheres via vector fields. The construction of our invariant is a generalization of both that of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant and that of Watanabe's Morse homotopy invariant, which implies the equivalence of these two invariants.
In this paper, we develop a method for constructing left-orders on the fundamental groups of rational homology 3-spheres. We begin by constructing the holonomy extension locus of a rational homology solid torus $M$, which encodes the information about peripherally hyperbolic $\widetilde{\text{PSL}_2\mathbb{R}}$ representations of $π_1(M)$. Plots of the holonomy extension loci of many rational homology solid tori are shown, and the relation to left-orderability is hinted. Using holonomy extension loci, we study rational homology 3-spheres coming from Dehn filling on rational homology solid tori…
M. Kontsevich proposed a topological construction for an invariant Z of rational homology 3-spheres using configuration space integrals. G. Kuperberg and D. Thurston proved that Z is a universal real finite type invariant for integral homology spheres in the sense of Ohtsuki, Habiro and Goussarov. We discuss the behaviour of Z under rational homology handlebodies replacements. The explicit formulae that we present generalize a sum formula obtained by the author for the Casson-Walker invariant in 1994. They allow us to identify the degree one term of Z with the Walker invariant for rational hom…
We show that if each of $K_1$ and $K_2$ is a trefoil knot or figure eight knot, the homology 3-sphere defined by the Kirby diagram which is a simple link of $K_1$ and $K_2$ with framing (0, n) is represented by an n-twisted Whitehead double of $K_2$ .
If a 3--manifold $Y$ contains a non-separating sphere, then some twisted Heegaard Floer homology of $Y$ is zero. This simple fact allows us to prove several results about Dehn surgery on knots in such manifolds. Similar results have been proved for knots in $L$--spaces.
