A theorem of Kirby states that two framed links in the 3-sphere produce orientation-preserving homeomorphic results of surgery if they are related by a sequence of stabilization and handle-slide moves.
The purpose of the present paper is twofold: First, we give a sufficient condition for a sequence of handle-slides on framed links to be able to be replaced with a sequences of algebraically canceling pairs of handle-slides. Then, using the first result, we obtain a refinement of Kirby's calculus for integral homology spheres which involves only +/-1-framed links with zero linking numbers.
We construct a Kirby color in the setting of Khovanov homology: an ind-object of the annular Bar-Natan category that is equipped with a natural handle slide isomorphism. Using functoriality and cabling properties of Khovanov homology, we define a Kirby-colored Khovanov homology that is invariant under the handle slide Kirby move, up to isomorphism. Via the Manolescu--Neithalath 2-handle formula, Kirby-colored Khovanov homology agrees with the $\mathfrak{gl}_{2}$ skein lasagna module, hence is an invariant of $4$-dimensional $2$-handlebodies.
We give a construction of Kirby weight systems associated to sl(2) and valued into the finite field Z/pZ. We show that it is possible to apply this sequence of weight systems on the universal invariant of framed link. We also show that the corresponding sequence admits a Fermat limit, which defines an asymptotic rational homology 3-sphere quantum invariant. Moreover, this asymptotic invariant coincides with the Ohtsuki invariant.
We present infinitely many homology spheres which contain two distinct knots whose 0-surgeries are $S^1 \times S^2$. This resolves a question posed by Kirby and Melvin in 1978.
A theorem of Kirby gives a necessary and sufficient condition for two framed links in S^3 to yield orientation-preserving diffeomorphic results of surgery. Kirby's theorem is an important method for constructing invariants of 3-manifolds. In this paper, we prove a variant of Kirby's theorem for null-homologous framed links in a 3-manifold. This result involves a new kind of moves, called IHX-moves, which are closely related to the IHX relation in the theory of finite type invariants. When the first homology group of M is free abelian, we give a refinement of this result to \pm1-framed, algebra…
We show that if each of $K_1$ and $K_2$ is a trefoil knot or figure eight knot, the homology 3-sphere defined by the Kirby diagram which is a simple link of $K_1$ and $K_2$ with framing (0, n) is represented by an n-twisted Whitehead double of $K_2$ .
We call an integral homology sphere $\textit{non-trivially}$ bounds a rational homology ball if it is obstructed from bounding an integral homology ball. After Fintushel and Stern's well-known example $Σ(2,3,7)$, Akbulut and Larson recently provided the first infinite families of Brieskorn spheres non-trivially bounding rational homology balls: $Σ(2,4n+1,12n+5)$ and $Σ(3,3n+1,12n+5)$ for odd~$n$. Using their technique, we present new such families: $Σ(2,4n+3,12n+7)$ and $Σ(3,3n+2,12n+7)$ for even $n$. Also manipulating their main argument, we simply recover some classical results of Akbulut an…
A celebrated theorem of Kirby identifies the set of closed oriented connected 3-manifolds with the set of framed links in $S^3$ modulo two moves. We give a similar description for the set of knots (and more generally, boundary links) in homology 3-spheres. As an application, we define a noncommutative version of the Alexander polynomial of a boundary link. Our surgery view of boundary links is a key ingredient in a construction of a rational version of the Kontsevich integral, which is described in subsequent work. The current version fixes minor typographical errors.
We construct a Kirby diagram of the rational homology ball used in "generalized rational blow-down" developed by Jongil Park. The diagram consists of a dotted circle and a torus knot. The link is simpler, but the parameters are a little complicate. Euclidean Algorithm is used three times in the construction and the proof.
We develop a generalization to non-Witt spaces of the intersection homology theory of Goresky-MacPherson. The second author has described the self-dual sheaves compatible with intersection homology, and the other authors have described a generalization of Cheeger's L2 de Rham cohomology. In this paper we extend both of these cohomologies by describing all sheaf complexes in the derived category of constructible sheaves that are compatible with middle perversity intersection cohomology, though not necessarily self-dual. On Thom-Mather stratified spaces this refined intersection cohomology theor…
We formulate a refinement of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory on a three-manifold via the refined topological string and the (2,0) theory on N M5 branes. The refined Chern-Simons theory is defined on any three-manifold with a semi-free circle action. We give an explicit solution of the theory, in terms of a one-parameter refinement of the S and T matrices of Chern-Simons theory, related to the theory of Macdonald polynomials. The ordinary and refined Chern-Simons theory are similar in many ways; for example, the Verlinde formula holds in both. We obtain new topological invariants of Seifert three-man…
For every rational homology 3-sphere with 2-torsion only we construct a unified invariant (which takes values in a certain cyclotomic completion of a polynomial ring), such that the evaluation of this invariant at any odd root of unity provides the SO(3) Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant at this root and at any even root of unity the SU(2) quantum invariant. Moreover, this unified invariant splits into a sum of the refined unified invariants dominating spin and cohomological refinements of quantum SU(2) invariants. New results on the Ohtsuki series and the integrality of quantum invariants a…
Functorial semi-norms on singular homology give refined "size" information on singular homology classes. A fundamental example is the l^1-semi-norm. We show that there exist finite functorial semi-norms on singular homology that are exotic in the sense that they are not carried by the l^1-semi-norm.
We present a combinatorial proof for the existence of the sign refined grid homology in lens spaces, and a self contained proof that $\partial_{\mathbb{Z}}^2 = 0$. We also present a Sage program that computes $\widehat{\mathrm{GH}} (L(p,q),K;\mathbb{Z})$, and provide empirical evidence supporting the absence of torsion in these groups.

Fast and efficient homology algorithms are in demand in the applied sciences for analyzing solid materials and proteins, processing digital imaging data, or pattern classification among others. Recent advances employ discrete Morse theory as a preprocessor. Research in this area has lead to the need to find complicated test examples. We present an infinite series of examples that have been constructed to test some of the latest algorithms under development. This family of 4-spheres (known as the Akbulut-Kirby spheres) is based on a handlebody construction via finitely presented groups.
In this paper we introduce a chain complex $C_{1 \pm 1}(D)$ where D is a plat braid diagram for a knot K. This complex is inspired by knot Floer homology, but it the construction is purely algebraic. It is constructed as an oriented cube of resolutions with differential d=d_0+d_1. We show that the E_2 page of the associated spectral sequence is isomorphic to the Khovanov homology of K, and that the total homology is a link invariant which we conjecture is isomorphic to δ-graded knot Floer homology. The complex can be refined to a tangle invariant for braids on 2n strands, where the associated …
We establish a direct map between refined topological vertex and sl(N) homological invariants of the of Hopf link, which include Khovanov-Rozansky homology as a special case. This relation provides an exact answer for homological invariants of the of Hopf link, whose components are colored by arbitrary representations of sl(N). At present, the mathematical formulation of such homological invariants is available only for the fundamental representation (the Khovanov-Rozansky theory) and the relation with the refined topological vertex should be useful for categorifying quantum group invariants a…
Homological stability for sequences of groups is often proved by studying the spectral sequence associated to the action of a typical group in the sequence on a highly-connected simplicial complex whose stabilizers are related to previous groups in the sequence. In the case of mapping class groups of manifolds, suitable simplicial complexes can be made using isotopy classes of various geometric objects in the manifold. In this paper we focus on the case of surfaces and show that by using more refined geometric objects consisting of certain configurations of curves with arcs that tether these c…
We formulate a very general conjecture relating the analytical invariants of a normal surface singularity to the Seiberg-Witten invariants of its link provided that the link is a rational homology sphere. As supporting evidence, we establish its validity for a large class of singularities: some rational and minimally elliptic (including the cyclic quotient and `polygonal') singularities, and Brieskorn-Hamm complete intersections. Some of the verifications are based on a result which describes (in terms of the plumbing graph) the Reidemeister-Turaev sign refined torsion (or, equivalently, the S…
This paper provides both a detailed study of color-dependence of link homologies, as realized in physics as certain spaces of BPS states, and a broad study of the behavior of BPS states in general. We consider how the spectrum of BPS states varies as continuous parameters of a theory are perturbed. This question can be posed in a wide variety of physical contexts, and we answer it by proposing that the relationship between unperturbed and perturbed BPS spectra is described by a spectral sequence. These general considerations unify previous applications of spectral sequence techniques to physic…
