Let $C$ be an integral and projective curve whose canonical model $C'$ lies on a rational normal scroll $S$ of dimension $n$. We mainly study some properties on $C$, such as gonality and the kind of singularities, in the case where $n=2$ and $C$ is non-Gorenstein, and in the case where $n=3$, the scroll $S$ is smooth, and $C'$ is a local complete intersection inside $S$. We also prove that a rational monomial curve with just one singular point lies on a surface scroll if and only if its gonality is at most $3$, and that it lies on a threefold scroll if and only if its gonality is at most $4$.
We prove the existence of canonical scrolls; that is, scrolls playing the role of canonical curves. First of all, they provide the geometrical version of Riemann Roch Teorem: any special scroll is the projection of a canonical scroll and they allow to understand the classification of special scrolls in P3. Canonical scrolls correspond to the projective model of canonical geometrically ruled surfaces over a smooth curve. We also prove that the generic canonical scroll is projectively normal except in the hyperelliptic case and for very particular cases in the nonhyperelliptic situation.
Let $C$ be an integral and projective curve; and let $C'$ be its canonical model. We study the relation between the gonality of $C$ and the dimension of a rational normal scroll $S$ where $C'$ can lie on. We are mainly interested in the case where $C$ is singular, or even non-Gorenstein, in which case $C'\not\cong C$. We first analyze some properties of an inclusion $C'\subset S$ when it is induced by a pencil on $C$. Afterwards, in an opposite direction, we assume $C'$ lies on a certain scroll, and check some properties $C$ may satisfy, such as gonality and the kind of its singularities. At t…
We study families of scrolls containing a given rational curve and families of rational curves contained in a fixed scroll via a stratification in terms of the degree of the induced map onto P^1 and we prove that there is no rational normal scroll of minimal degree and of dimension <=n/2 containing a general binary curve inP^n.
Let $C\subset \mathbb{P}^{g-1}$ be a general curve of genus $g$ and let $k$ be a positive integer such that the Brill-Noether number $ρ(g,k,1)\geq 0$ and $g > k+1$. The aim of this short note is to study the relative canonical resolution of $C$ on a rational normal scroll swept out by a $g^1_k=|L|$ with $L\in W^1_k(C)$ general. We show that the bundle of quadrics appearing in the relative canonical resolution is unbalanced if and only if $ρ>0$ and $(k-ρ-\frac{7}{2})^2-2k+\frac{23}{4}>0$.
Given a smooth curve of genus 2 embedded in P^(d-2) with a complete linear system of degree d>=6, we list all types of rational normal scrolls arising from linear systems g^1_2 and g^1_3 on C. Furthermore, we give a description of the ideal of such a curve of genus 2 embedded in P^(d-2) as a sum of the ideal of the two-dimensional scroll defined by the unique g^1_2 on C and the ideal of a three-dimensional scroll arising from a g^1_3 on C and not containing the scroll defined by the g^1_2 on C.
In dimension $n = 2m-2 \geq 4$ adjunction theoretic scrolls over a smooth $m$-fold may not be classical scrolls, due to the existence of divisorial fibers. A $4$-dimensional scroll $(X,L)$ over $\mathbb P^3$ of this type is considered, and the equation of its Hilbert curve $Γ$ is determined in two ways, one of which relies on the fact that $(X,L)$ is at the same time a classical scroll over a threefold $Y \not=\mathbb P^3$. It turns out that $Γ$ does not perceive divisorial fibers. The equation we obtain also shows that a question raised in a previous article by Beltrametti, Lanteri and Sommes…
We study the projective normality of a linearly normal special scroll R of degree d and speciality i over a smooth curve X of genus g. We relate it with the Clifford index of the base curve X. If d>=4g-2i-Cliff(X)+1, i>=3 and R is smooth, we prove that the projective normality of the scroll is equivalent to the projective normality of its directrix curve of minimum degree.
We study the projective normality of a linearly normal special scroll R of degree d and speciality i over a smooth curve of genus g. If d>=4g-2i+1, we prove that the projective normality of the scroll is equivalent to the projective normality of its directrix curve of minimum degree.
A tetragonal canonical curve is the complete intersection of two divisors on a scroll. The equations can be written in `rolling factors' format. For such homogeneous ideals we give methods to compute infinitesimal deformations. Deformations can be obstructed. For the case of quadratic equations on the scroll we derive explicit base equations. They are used to study extensions of tetragonal curves.
In this paper we study the Brill-Noether theory of sub-line bundles of a general, stable rank-two vector bundle on a curve C with general moduli. We relate this theory to the geometry of unisecant curves on smooth, non-special scrolls with hyperplane sections isomorphic to C. Most of our results are based on degeneration techniques.
In this paper, we study the minimal free resolution of non-ACM divisors $X$ of a smooth rational normal surface scroll $S=S(a_1 ,a_2 ) \subset \mathbb{P}^r$. Our main result shows that for $a_2 \geq 2a_1 -1$, there exists a nice decomposition of the Betti table of $X$ as a sum of much simpler Betti tables. As a by-product of our results, we obtain a complete description of the graded Betti numbers of $X$ for the cases where $S=S(1,r-2)$ for some $r \geq 3$ and $S=S(2,r-3)$ for some $r \geq 6$.
The aim of this paper is two--fold. We first strongly improve our previous main result Theorem 3.1 in Arxiv 1702.00918v3 12Feb2018 ("Brill-Noether loci of rank two vector bundles on a general $ν$-gonal curve"), concerning classification of irreducible components of the Brill--Noether locus parametrizing rank 2 semistable vector bundles of suitable degrees $d$, with at least $d-2g+4$ independent global sections, on a general $ν$--gonal curve $C$ of genus $g$. We then uses this classification to study several properties of the Hilbert scheme of suitable surface scrolls in projective space, which…
Using degeneration to scrolls, we give an easy proof of non-existence of curves of low genera on general surfaces in P3 of degree d >=5. We show, along the same lines, boundedness of families of curves of small enough genera on general surfaces in P3. We also show that there exist Kobayashi hyperbolic surfaces in P3 of degree d = 7 (a result so far unknown), and give a new construction of such surfaces of degree d = 6. Finally we provide some new lower bounds for geometric genera of surfaces lying on general hypersurfaces of degree 3d > 15 in P4.
Let $E$ be a vector bundle over a smooth curve $C$, and $S = \mathbb{P} E$ the associated projective bundle. We describe the inflectional loci of certain projective models $ψ\colon S \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$ in terms of Quot schemes of $E$. This gives a geometric characterisation of the Segre invariant $s_1 (E)$, which leads to new geometric criteria for semistability and cohomological stability of bundles over $C$. We also use these ideas to show that for general enough $S$ and $ψ$, the inflectional loci are all of the expected dimension. An auxiliary result, valid for a general subvarie…
We study the projective models of complex K3 surfaces polarized by a line bundle L such that all smooth curves in |L| have non-general Clifford index. Such models are in a natural way contained in rational normal scrolls. We use this study to classify and describe all projective models of K3 surfaces of genus at most 10.
We give a geometrical characterization of the ideal of quadrics containing a canonical curve with an involution. This implies to study involutions of rational normal scrolls and Veronese surfaces.
In this paper we study examples of P^r-scrolls defined over primitively polarized K3 surfaces S of genus g, which arise from Brill-Noether theory of the general curve in the primitive linear system on S and from classical Lazarsfeld's results in. We show that such scrolls form an open dense subset of a component H of their Hilbert scheme; moreover, we study some properties of H (e.g. smoothness, dimensional computation, etc.) just in terms of the moduli space of such K3's and of the moduli space of semistable torsion-free sheaves of a given Mukai-vector on S. One of the motivation of this anal…
The aim of this paper is to study Weil divisors on a singular rational normal scroll X. In particular the author describes explicitly the group of divisorial sheaves associated to Weil divisors on X, via the direct image of the Picard group of the canonical resolution of X, which is very well known. The analysis naturally splits in two cases, depending on the codimension of the vertex of X (>2 or =2). When the codimension of the vertex is >2, then the two groups are isomorphic and there is a natural intersection form in X inherited from the one in the canonical resolution. When the codimension…
(1,d)-polarized abelian surfaces in P^(d-1) with two plane cubic curve fibrations lie in two elliptic P^2-scrolls. The union of these scrolls form a reducible Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In this paper we show that this occurs when d<10 and analyse the family of such surfaces and 3-folds in detail when d=6. In particular, the reducible Calabi-Yau 3-folds deform in that case to irreducible ones with non-normal singularities.
A Cremona transformation is a birational self-map of the projective space $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $. Cremona transformations of $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $ form a group and this group has a rational action on subvarieties of $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $ and hence on its Hilbert scheme. We study this action on the family of rational curves of $ \mathbb{P}^{3} $ and we prove the rectifiability of any one dimensional family. This shows that any uniruled surface is Cremona equivalent to a scroll and it answers a question of Bogomolov-Böhning related to the study of uniformly rational varieties. We provide examples of infin…
We show that for $5$-gonal curves of odd genus $g\geq 13$ and even genus $g\geq 28$ the $\lceil \frac{g-1}{2}\rceil$-th syzygy module of the curve is not determined by the syzygies of the scroll swept out by the special pencil of degree $5$.
Let X be a P^1 scroll (a compactification of a line bundle L) over a complex surafce S and assume S has a global two form with zero loci a smooth curve C. The Donaldson Thomas invariants of X is shown to be zero if the curve class has is component on S not a multiple of [C]. For nonzero case, when the prime field insertion are above C, the invariant is shown to depend only on the analytic neighborhood of L in X.
Given a curve $C$ and a linear system $\ell$ on $C$, the secant locus $V_e^{e-f}( \ell )$ parametrises effective divisors of degree $e$ which impose at most $e-f$ conditions on $\ell$. For $E \to C$ a vector bundle of rank $r$, we define determinantal subschemes $H_e^{e-f} ( \ell ) \subseteq \mathrm{Hilb}^e ( \mathbb{P} E )$ and $Q_e^{e-f} (V) \subseteq \mathrm{Quot}^{0, e} ( E^* )$ which generalise $V_e^{e-f} ( \ell )$, giving several examples. We describe the Zariski tangent spaces of $Q_e^{e-f} (V)$, and give examples showing that smoothness of $Q_e^{e-f} (V)$ is not necessarily controlled …
We show that Generic Green's conjecture holds for generic binary curves, through a detailed analysis of the family of scrolls containing fixed rational normal curves.
In this thesis we give a complete description of the syzygies of irreducible, nonsingular, canoncial curves $C$ of genus 9. This includes a collection of all possible Betti tables for $C$. Moreover a direct correspondence between these Betti tables and the number and types of special linear series on $C$ is given. Especially for $\operatorname{Cliff}(C)=3$ the curve $C$ is contained in determinantal surface $Y$ on a 4-dimensional rational normal scroll $X\subset \mathbb{P}^8$ constructed from a base point free pencil of divisors of degree 5.
This short note provides a quick introduction to relative canonical resolutions of curves on rational normal scrolls. We present our Macaulay2-package which computes the relative canonical resolution associated to a curve and a pencil of divisors. Most of our experimental data can be found on a dedicated webpage. We end with a list of conjectural shapes of relative canonical resolutions. In particular, for curves of genus $g=n\cdot k +1$ and pencils of degree $k$ for $n\ge 1$, we conjecture that the syzygy divisors on the Hurwitz space $\mathscr{H}_{g,k}$ constructed by Deopurkar and Patel all…
One of the simplest examples of a smooth, non degenerate surface in P^4 is the quintic elliptic scroll. It can be constructed from an elliptic normal curve E by joining every point on E with the translation of this point by a non-zero 2-torsion point. The same construction can be applied when E is replaced by a (lineaerly normally embedded) abelian variety A. In this paper we ask the question when the resulting scroll Y is smooth. If A is an abelian surface embedded by a line bundle L of type (d_1,d_2) and r=d_1d_2, then we prove that for general A the scroll Y is smooth if r is at least 7 wit…
We determine conditions for the invariance of the gonality under base extension, depending on the numeric invariants of the curve. More generally, we study the Galois descent of morphisms of curves to Brauer-Severi varieties, and also of rational normal scrolls.
In this paper we study smooth complex projective polarized varieties (X,H) of dimension n \ge 2 which admit a dominating family V of rational curves of H-degree 3, such that two general points of X may be joined by a curve parametrized by V, and such that there is a covering family of rational curves of H-degree one. Our main result is that the Picard number of these manifolds is at most three, and that, if equality holds, (X,H) has an adjuction theoretic scroll structure over a smooth variety.
We develop a new general method for computing the decomposition type of the normal bundle to a projective rational curve. This method is then used to detect and explain an example of a Hilbert scheme that parametrizes all the rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^s$ with a given decomposition type of the normal bundle and that has exactly two irreducible components. This gives a negative answer to the very old question whether such Hilbert schemes are always irreducible. We also characterize smooth non-degenerate rational curves contained in rational normal scroll surfaces in terms of the splitting t…
In this paper we study Koszul cohomology and the Green and Prym-Green conjectures for canonical and Prym-canonical binary curves. We prove that if property $N_p$ holds for a canonical or a Prym-canonical binary curve of genus $g$ then it holds for a generic canonical or Prym-canonical binary curve of genus $g+1$. We also verify the Green and Prym-Green conjectures for generic canonical and Prym-canonical binary curves of low genus ($6\leq g\leq 15$, $g\neq 8$ for Prym-canonical and $3\leq g\leq 12$ for canonical).
Consider a height two ideal, $I$, which is minimally generated by $m$ homogeneous forms of degree $d$ in the polynomial ring $R=k[x,y]$. Suppose that one column in the homogeneous presenting matrix $\f$ of $I$ has entries of degree $n$ and all of the other entries of $\f$ are linear. We identify an explicit generating set for the ideal $\Cal A$ which defines the Rees algebra $\Cal R=R[It]$; so $\Cal R=S/\Cal A$ for the polynomial ring $S=R[T_1,...,T_m]$. We resolve $\Cal R$ as an $S$-module and $I^s$ as an $R$-module, for all powers $s$. The proof uses the homogeneous coordinate ring, $A=S/H$,…
We explore the concept of projections of syzygies and prove two new technical results; we firstly give a precise characterization of syzygy schemes in terms of their projections, secondly, we prove a converse to Aprodu's Projection Theorem. Applying these results, we prove that extremal syzygies of general curves of non-maximal gonality embedded by a linear system of sufficiently high degree arise from scrolls. Lastly, we prove Green's Conjecture for general covers of elliptic curves (of arbitrary degree) as well as proving a new result for curves of even genus and maximal gonality.
We construct families of quartic and cubic hypersurfaces through a canonical curve, which are parametrized by an open subset in a Grassmannian and a Flag variety respectively. Using G. Kempf's cohomological obstruction theory, we show that these families cut out the canonical curve and that the quartics are birational (via a blowing-up of a linear subspace) to quadric bundles over the projective plane, whose Steinerian curve equals the canonical curve.
We establish GIT semistability of the 2nd Hilbert point of every Gieseker-Petri general canonical curve by a simple geometric argument. As a consequence, we obtain an upper bound on slopes of general families of Gorenstein curves. We also explore the question of what replaces hyperelliptic curves in the GIT quotients of the Hilbert scheme of canonical curves.
We discuss GIT for canonically embedded genus four curves and the connection to the Hassett-Keel program. A canonical genus four curve is a complete intersection of a quadric and a cubic, and, in contrast to the genus three case, there is a family of GIT quotients that depend on a choice of linearization. We discuss the corresponding VGIT problem and show that the resulting spaces give the final steps in the Hassett-Keel program for genus four curves.
We introduce the problem of GIT stability for syzygy points of canonical curves with a view toward a GIT construction of the canonical model of the moduli space of stable curves. As the first step in this direction, we prove semi-stability of the first syzygy point for a general canonical curve of odd genus.
We give a simple proof of Voisin's Theorem for general canonical curves of even genus. This completely determines the terms of the minimal free resolution of the coordinate ring of such curves.
We compute equations for a Hurwitz curve of genus 17 and we conclude that the canonical ideal of any Hurwitz curve of genus 14 or 17 is generated by quadrics.
We prove that a generic canonically or bicanonically embedded smooth curve has semistable m-th Hilbert points for all m. We also prove that a generic bicanonically embedded smooth curve has stable m-th Hilbert points for all m \geq 3. In the canonical case, this is accomplished by proving finite Hilbert semistability of special singular curves with G_m-action, namely the canonically embedded balanced ribbon and the canonically embedded balanced double A_{2k+1}-curve. In the bicanonical case, we prove finite Hilbert stability of special hyperelliptic curves, namely Wiman curves. Finally, we giv…
It is shown that the log-canonical threshold of a curve with an isolated singularity is computed by the term ideal of the curve in a suitable system of local parameters at the singularity. The proof uses the Enriques diagram of the singularity and shows that the log-canonical threshold depends only on a non-degenerate path of that diagram.
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1109.4986, where we proved that a general smooth curve of odd genus, canonically or bicanonically embedded, has semistable finite Hilbert points. Here, we prove that a generic canonically embedded curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. More precisely, we prove that a generic canonically embedded trigonal curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. Furthermore, we show that the analogous result fails for bielliptic curves. Namely, the Hilbert points of bielliptic curves are asymptotically semistable but become non-semistable below…
We prove that there is no g for which the canonical embedding of a general curve of genus g lies on the Segre embedding of any product of three or more projective spaces.
We study the log canonical models of the moduli space MBar_{0,n} of pointed stable genus zero curves with respect to the standard log canonical divisors K+aD, where D denotes the boundary. In particular we show that, as a formal consequence of a conjecture by Fulton regarding the ample cone of MBar_{0,n}, these log canonical models are equal to certain of Hassett's weighted pointed curve spaces.
Green's Conjecture states the following : syzygies of the canonical model of a curve are simple up to the p^th stage if and only if the Clifford index of C is greater than p. We prove that the generic curve of genus g satisfies Green's conjecture.
We describe explicitly all hyperelliptic limits of quadrics through smooth canonical curves of genus $g$ in ${\mathbb P}^{g-1}$. Also, we construct an open embedding of the blow up of a ${\rm PGL}_g$-bundle over the moduli space of curves of genus $g$ along the hyperelliptic locus into the blow up of the canonical Hilbert scheme of ${\mathbb P}^{g-1}$ along the closure of the locus of canonical ribbons, which are certain double thickenings of rational normal curves introduced and studied by Bayer and Eisenbud.
In this article we study rational curves with a unique unibranch genus-$g$ singularity, which is of {\it $\ka$-hyperelliptic} type in the sense of \cite{To}; we focus on the cases $\ka=0$ and $\ka=1$, in which the semigroup associated to the singularity is of (sub)maximal weight. We obtain a partial classification of these curves according to the linear series they support, the scrolls on which they lie, and their gonality.
In this paper we show that the relative canonical sheaf of a relatively minimal fibration of curves over a curve is semi-ample ; in fact, its m-tensored product is base point free for any m > 1. We use Koszul cohomology with it to prove that the relative canonical ring of the fibration is generated in degree up to five.
We study the stability of the normal bundle of canonical genus $8$ curves and prove that on a general curve the bundle is stable. The proof rests on Mukai's description of these curves as linear sections of a Grassmannian $\mathrm{G}(2,6)$. This is the next case of a conjecture by M. Aprodu, G. Farkas, and A. Ortega: the general canonical curve of every genus $g \geq 7$ should have stable normal bundle. We also give some more evidence for this conjecture in higher genus.
Generalizing the classical theorems of Max Noether and Petri, we describe generators and relations for the canonical ring of a stacky curve, including an explicit Gröbner basis. We work in a general algebro-geometric context and treat log canonical and spin canonical rings as well. As an application, we give an explicit presentation for graded rings of modular forms arising from finite-area quotients of the upper half-plane by Fuchsian groups.
Throughout the paper, among other esults, we give partial analogues of theorem 1.1 for projectivized tangent cone quadrics of rank equal or less than 4, for Prymians.
