Using the connection with the Frobenius manifold structure, we study the matrix model description of minimal Liouville gravity (MLG) based on the Douglas string equation. Our goal is to find an exact discrete formulation of the (q,p) MLG model that intrinsically contains information about the conformal selection rules. We discuss how to modify the Frobenius manifold structure appropriately for this purposes. We propose a modification of the construction for Lee-Yang series involving the $A_{p-1}$ algebra instead of the previously used $A_1$ algebra. With the new prescription, we calculate correlators on the sphere up to four points and find full agreement with the continuous approach without using resonance transformations.
We try to develop a coherent picture on Liouville theory as a two-dimensional conformal field theory that takes into account the perspectives of path-integral approach, bootstrap, canonical quantization and operator approach. To do this, we need to develop further some of these approaches. This includes in particular a construction of general exponential field operators from a set of covariant chiral operators. The latter are shown to satisfy braid relations that allow one to prove the locality of the former.
We revisit the annulus amplitude of FZZT branes with general matter sectors (r,s) using the recent development of matrix model and minimal Liouville gravity. Following the boundary description of the 1-matrix model and bulk resonance transformation between primary operators we find the consistency of the brane decomposition into (1,1)-branes. We also investigate the corresponding results obtained directly from the minimal Liouville gravity and demonstrate the perfect agreement with the matrix results.
The generating functional of stress tensor correlation functions in two-dimensional conformal field theory is the nonlocal Polyakov action, or equivalently, the Liouville or Alekseev-Shatashvili action. I review its holographic derivation within the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence, both in metric and Chern-Simons formulations. I also provide a detailed comparison with the well-known Hamiltonian reduction of three-dimensional gravity to a flat Liouville theory, and conclude that the two results are unrelated. In particular, the flat Liouville action is still off-shell with respect to bulk equati…
In this paper we use recent results on resonance relations between the matrix models and the minimal Liouville gravity to compute the torus correlation numbers in (3,p) minimal Liouville gravity. Namely, we calculate the torus generating partition function of the (3,p) matrix models and use it to obtain the one- and two-point correlation numbers in the minimal Liouville gravity.
The problem of the structure constants of the operator product expansions in the minimal models of conformal field theory is revisited. We rederive these previously known constants and present them in the form particularly useful in the Liouville gravity applications. Analytic relation between our expression and the structure constant in Liouville field theory is discussed. Finally we present in general form the three- and two-point correlation numbers on the sphere in the minimal Liouville gravity.
We study n+3-point correlation functions of exponential fields in Liouville field theory with n degenerate and 3 arbitrary fields. An analytical expression for these correlation functions is derived in terms of Coulomb integrals. The application of these results to the minimal Liouville gravity is considered.
In this article, we will show how to use Zamolodchikov's higher equations of motion in Liouville field theory to explicitly calculate $N$-point correlation numbers in minimal Liouville gravity for $N>4$. We find the explicit expression for the 5-point correlation numbers and compare it with calculations in the one-matrix models.
The four-point integral of the minimal super Liouville gravity on the sphere is evaluated numerically. The integration procedure is based on the effective elliptic parameterization of the moduli space. The analysis is performed for a few different gravitational four-point amplitudes. The results agree with the analytic results recently obtained using the Higher super Liouville equations of motion.
We evaluate one-point correlation numbers on the torus in the Liouville theory coupled to the conformal matter M(2,2p+1). We find agreement with the recent results obtained in the matrix model approach.
We continue the study of $(q,p)$ Minimal Liouville Gravity with the help of Douglas string equation. We generalize the results of \cite{Moore:1991ir}, \cite{Belavin:2008kv}, where Lee-Yang series $(2,2s+1)$ was studied, to $(3,3s+p_0)$ Minimal Liouville Gravity, where $p_0=1,2$. We demonstrate that there exist such coordinates $τ_{m,n}$ on the space of the perturbed Minimal Liouville Gravity theories, in which the partition function of the theory is determined by the Douglas string equation. The coordinates $τ_{m,n}$ are related in a non-linear fashion to the natural coupling constants $λ_{m,n…
Application of our algebraic approach to Liouville integrable defects is proposed for the sine-Gordon model. Integrability of the model is ensured by the underlying classical r-matrix algebra. The first local integrals of motion are identified together with the corresponding Lax pairs. Continuity conditions imposed on the time components of the entailed Lax pairs give rise to the sewing conditions on the defect point consistent with Liouville integrability.
We present a method for the first principles calculation of tachyon one-point amplitudes in $(2,2p+1)$ minimal Liouville gravity defined on a torus. The method is based on the higher equations of motion in the Liouville CFT. These equations were earlier successfully applied for analytic calculations of the amplitudes in the spherical topology. We show that this approach allows to reduce the moduli integrals entering the definition of the torus amplitudes to certain boundary contributions, which can be calculated explicitly. The results agree with the calculations performed in the matrix models…
We contruct the general formula for a set of discrete gauge states (DGS) in c<1 Liouville theory. This formula reproduces the previously found c=1 DGS in the appropriate limiting case. We also demonstrate the SO(2,C) invariant structure of these DGS in the old covariant quantization of the theory. This is in analogy to the SO(2,C) invariant ring structure of BRST cohomology of the theory.
We show that N=1 supersymmetric Liouville theory can be continued to central charge c=3/2, and that the limiting non-rational superconformal field theory can also be obtained as a limit of supersymmetric minimal models. This generalises a result known for the non-supersymmetric case. We present explicit expressions for the three-point functions of bulk fields, as well as a set of superconformal boundary states. The main technical ingredient to take the limit of minimal models consists in determining analytic expressions for the structure constants. In the appendix we show in detail how the str…
We interpret the matrix boundaries of the one matrix model (1MM) recently constructed by two of the authors as an outcome of a relation among FZZT branes. In the double scaling limit, the 1MM is described by the (2,2p+1) minimal Liouville gravity. These matrix operators are shown to create a boundary with matter boundary conditions given by the Cardy states. We also demonstrate a recursion relation among the matrix disc correlator with two different boundaries. This construction is then extended to the two matrix model and the disc correlator with two boundaries is compared with the Liouville …
We revisit the perturbative S-matrix of c=1 string theory from the worldsheet perspective. We clarify the origin of the leg pole factors, the non-analyticity of the string amplitudes, and the validity as well as limitations of earlier computations based on resonance momenta. We compute the tree level 4-point amplitude and the genus one 2-point reflection amplitude by numerically integrating Virasoro conformal blocks with DOZZ structure constants on the sphere and on the torus, with sufficiently generic complex Liouville momenta, and find agreement with known answers from the c=1 matrix model.
We study unitary minimal models coupled to Liouville gravity using Douglas string equation. Our approach is based on the assumption that there exist an appropriate solution of the Douglas string equation and some special choice of the resonance transformation such that necessary selection rules of the minimal Liouville gravity are satisfied. We use the connection with the Frobenius manifold structure. We argue that the flat coordinates on the Frobenius manifold are the most appropriate choice for calculating correlation functions. We find the appropriate solution of the Douglas string equation…
The computation of the correlation numbers in Minimal Liouville Gravity involves an integration over moduli spaces of complex curves. There are two independent approaches to the calculation: the direct one, based on the CFT methods and Liouville higher equations of motion, and the alternative one, motivated by discrete description of 2D gravity and based on the Douglas string equation. However these two approaches give rise to the results that are not always consistent among themselves. In this paper we explore this problem. We show that in order to reconcile two methods the so-called discrete…
In this note we report on some properties of correlation numbers for 2-dimensional Liouville gravity coupled with $(2,2p+1)$ minimal model at large $p$. In the limit $p \to \infty$, for some explicitly known examples in a particular region of parameter space correlation numbers are shown to reduce to Weil-Petersson volumes, analytically continued to imaginary geodesic lengths. This marks another connection of this limit with JT-gravity. We also comment on supposed geometric meaning of the obtained answers outside of this region, in particular, the meaning of the minimal model fusion rules. Ano…
We continue to study minimal Liouville gravity (MLG) using a dual approach based on the idea that the MLG partition function is related to the tau function of the A_q integrable hierarchy via the resonance transformations, which are in turn fixed by conformal selection rules. One of the main problems in this approach is to choose the solution of the Douglas string equation that is relevant for MLG. The appropriate solution was recently found using connection with the Frobenius manifolds. We use this solution to investigate three- and four-point correlators in the unitary MLG models. We find an…
In this paper, we study a class of sphere and torus correlation functions in the W_N minimal model. In particular, we show that a large class of exact sphere three-point functions of W_N primaries, derived using affine Toda theory, exhibit large N factorization. This allows us to identify some fundamental particles and their bound states in the holographic dual, including light states. We also derive the torus two-point function of basic primaries, by directly constructing the relevant conformal blocks. The result can then be analytically continued to give the Lorentzian thermal two-point func…
We construct the one matrix model (MM) correlators corresponding to the general bulk-boundary correlation numbers of the minimal Liouville gravity (LG) on the disc. To find agreement between both discrete and continuous approach, we investigate the resonance transformation mixing boundary and bulk couplings. It leads to consider two sectors, depending on whether the matter part of the LG correlator is vanishing due to the fusion rules. In the vanishing case, we determine the explicit transformation of the boundary couplings at the first order in bulk couplings. In the non-vanishing case, no bu…
The continuation of the Liouville conformal field theory to c<=1 is considered. The viability of an interpretation involving a timelike boson which is the conformal factor for two-dimensional asymptotically de Sitter geometries is examined. The conformal bootstrap leads to a three-point function with a unique analytic factor which is the same as that which appears along with the fusion coefficients in the minimal models. A corresponding non-analytic factor produces a well-defined metric on fields only when the central charge is restricted to those of the topological minimal models, and when th…
The correlation functions for models of minimal gravity are discussed. An algorithm is proposed for calculations of invariant ratios from formulas of residues that can be compared with the coefficients of expansion of the partition function in Liouville theory. For (2,2K-1) models transition coefficient from basis of quasiclassical hierarchy to basis Liouville theory is obtained evidently, and the hypothesis about exact form of spectral curve has been verified.
We present a concrete holographic realization of the eternal inflation and its census taker in (1+1) dimensional Liouville gravity by applying the FRW/CFT philosophy proposed by Freivogel, Sekino, Susskind and Yeh (FSSY). The dual boundary theory is nothing but the old matrix model describing the two-dimensional Liouville gravity coupled with minimal model matter fields. In Liouville gravity, the flat Minkowski space or even the AdS space will decay into the dS space, which is in stark contrast with higher dimensional theories, but the spirit of the FSSY conjecture applies with only minimal mo…
We use the connection between the Frobrenius manifold and the Douglas string equation to further investigate Minimal Liouville gravity. We search a solution of the Douglas string equation and simultaneously a proper transformation from the KdV to the Liouville frame which ensure the fulfilment of the conformal and fusion selection rules. We find that the desired solution of the string equation has explicit and simple form in the flat coordinates on the Frobenious manifold in the general case of (p,q) Minimal Liouville gravity.
We study the simplest examples of minimal string theory whose worldsheet description is the unitary (p,q) minimal model coupled to two-dimensional gravity (Liouville field theory). In the Liouville sector, we show that four-point correlation functions of `tachyons' exhibit logarithmic singularities, and that the theory turns out to be logarithmic. The relation with Zamolodchikov's logarithmic degenerate fields is also discussed. Our result holds for generic values of (p,q).
The duality between the Sine-Liouville conformal field theory and the two dimensional black hole is revisited by considering the two possible Sine-Liouville dressings together. We show that this choice is consistent with the structure of correlation functions, and that the OPE of the two dressings yields the black hole deformation operator. As an application of this approach, we investigate the role of higher winding perturbations in the context of c=1 strings, where we argue that they are related to higher-spin discrete states that generalize the 2d black hole operator.
We consider the M(2,3) Minimal Liouville gravity, whose states in the gravity sector are represented by irreducible modules of the Virasoro algebra. We present a recursive construction for BRST cohomology classes. This construction is based on using an explicit form of singular vectors in irreducible modules of the Virasoro algebra. We construct an algebra of operators acting on the BRST cohomology space. The operator algebra of physical states is established by use of these operators.
Using superspace projection operators we provide a classification of (3/2,2) off-shell supermultiplets which are realized in terms of a real axial vector superfield, with or without compensating superfields. Any linearized supergravity action is shown to be a superposition of those corresponding to (i) old minimal supergravity, (ii) new minimal supergravity and (iii) the novel (3/2,2) off-shell supermultiplet with 12+12 degrees of freedom obtained in hep-th/0201096.
We test recent results for the four-point correlation numbers in Minimal Liouville Gravity against calculations in the one-Matrix Models, and find full agreement. In the process, we construct the resonance transformation which relates coupling parameters of the Liouville Gravity with the couplings of the Matrix Models, up to the terms of the order 4. We also conjecture the general form of this transformation.
We study the connection between minimal Liouville string theory and generalized open KdV hierarchies. We are interested in generalizing Douglas string equation formalism to the open topology case. We show that combining the results of the closed topology, based on the Frobenius manifold structure and resonance transformations, with the appropriate open case modification, which requires the insertion of macroscopic loop operators, we reproduce the well-known result for the expectation value of a bulk operator for the FZZT brane coupled to the general (q,p) minimal model. The matching of the res…
In this paper we discuss various aspects of non-compact models of CFT of the type: $ \prod_{j=1}^{N_L} {N=2 Liouville theory}_j \otimes \prod_{i=1}^{N_M} {N=2 minimal model}_i $ and $ \prod_{j=1}^{N_L}{SL(2;R)/U(1) supercoset}_j \otimes \prod_{i=1}^{N_M} {N=2 minimal model}_i $. These models are related to each other by T-duality. Such string vacua are expected to describe non-compact Calabi-Yau compactifications, typically ALE fibrations over (weighted) projective spaces. We find that when the Liouville ($SL(2;R)/U(1)$) theory is coupled to minimal models, there exist only (c,c), (a,a) ((c,a)…
We investigate the issues of unitarity and reality of the spectrum for the imaginary coupled affine Toda field theories based on a_1(1) and a_2(2) and the perturbed minimal models that arise from their various RSOS restrictions. We show that while all theories based on a_1(1) have real spectra in finite volume, the spectra of a_2(2) models is in general complex, with some exceptions. We also correct the S matrices conjectured earlier for the phi(1,5) perturbations of minimal models and give evidence for a conjecture that the RSOS spectra can be obtained as suitable projections of the folded AT…
We study two-dimensional Liouville gravity and minimal string theory on spaces with fixed length boundaries. We find explicit formulas describing the gravitational dressing of bulk and boundary correlators in the disk. Their structure has a striking resemblance with observables in 2d BF (plus a boundary term), associated to a quantum deformation of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$, a connection we develop in some detail. For the case of the $(2,p)$ minimal string theory, we compare and match the results from the continuum approach with a matrix model calculation, and verify that in the large $p$ limit the c…
We study coupled unitary Virasoro minimal models in the large rank ($m \rightarrow \infty$) limit. In large $m$ perturbation theory, we find two non-trivial IR fixed points which exhibit irrational coefficients in several anomalous dimensions and the central charge. For $N>4$ copies, we show that the IR theory breaks all possible currents that would otherwise enhance the Virasoro algebra, up to spin 10. This provides strong evidence that the IR fixed points are examples of compact, unitary, irrational CFTs with the minimal amount of chiral symmetry. We also analyze anomalous dimension matrices…
The structure and modular properties of N=4 superconformal characters are reviewed and exploited, in an attempt to construct elliptic genera-like functions by decompactifying K3. The construction is tested against expressions obtained in the context of strings propagating in background ALE spaces of type A(n-1), using the underlying superconformal theory, i.e the tensor product of N=2 minimal with N=2 Liouville theory.
We model the back-reaction of a static observer in four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime by means of a singular $\mathbb Z_q$ quotient. The set of fixed points of the $\mathbb Z_q$ action consists of a pair of codimension two minimal surfaces given by 2-spheres in the Euclidean geometry. The introduction of an orbifold parameter $q>1$ permits the construction of an effective action for the bulk gravity theory with support on each of these minimal surfaces. The effective action corresponds to that of Liouville field theory on a 2-sphere with a finite vacuum expectation value of the Liouville fie…
The replica wormholes are a key to the existence of the islands that play a central role in a recent proposal for the resolution of the black hole information paradox. In this paper, we study the replica wormholes in the JT gravity, a model of two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to a non-dynamical dilaton, by making use of the 2$d$ conformal field theory (CFT) description, namely, the Liouville theory coupled to the $(2,p)$ minimal matter in the $p\to\infty$ limit. In the Liouville CFT description, the replica wormholes are created by the twist operators and the gravitational part of the b…
We consider the 2D super Liouville gravity coupled to the minimal superconformal theory. We analyze the physical states in the theory and give the general form of the n-point correlation numbers on the sphere in terms of integrals over the moduli space. The three-point correlation numbers are presented explicitly. For the four-point correlators, we show that the integral over the moduli space reduces to the boundary terms if one of the fields is degenerate. It turns out that special logarithmic fields are relevant for evaluating these boundary terms. We discuss the construction of these fields…
We point out that the non-critical version of the k-fractional superstring theory can be described by k-cut critical points of the matrix models. In particular, in comparison with the spectrum structure of fractional super-Liouville theory, we show that (p,q) minimal fractional superstring theories appear in the Z_k-symmetry breaking critical points of the k-cut two-matrix models and the operator contents and string susceptibility coincide on both sides. By using this correspondence, we also propose a set of primary operators of the fractional superconformal ghost system which consistently pro…

We derive explicit expressions for a specific subclass of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity bilocal correlators, corresponding to degenerate Virasoro representations. On the disk, these degenerate correlators are structurally simple, and they allow us to shed light on the 1/C Schwarzian bilocal perturbation series. In particular, we prove that the series is asymptotic for generic weight $h\notin - \mathbb{N}/2$. Inspired by its minimal string ancestor, we propose an expression for higher genus corrections to the degenerate correlators. We discuss the extension to the $\mathcal{N}=1$ super JT mode…
We analyze exactly the simplest minimal superstring theory, using its dual matrix model. Its target space is one dimensional (the Liouville direction), and the background fields include a linear dilaton, a possible tachyon condensate, and RR flux. The theory has both charged and neutral branes, and these exhibit new and surprising phenomena. The smooth moduli space of charged branes has different weakly coupled boundaries in which the branes have different RR charges. This new duality between branes of different charges shows that the semiclassical notion of localized charge is not precise in …
There are two alternative approaches to the minimal gravity - direct Liouville approach and matrix models. Recently there has been a certain progress in the matrix model approach, growing out of presence of a Frobenius manifold (FM) structure embedded in the theory. The previous studies were mainly focused on the spherical topology. Essentially, it was shown that the action principle of Douglas equation allows to define the free energy and to compute the correlation numbers if the resonance transformations are properly incorporated. The FM structure allows to find the explicit form of the reso…
2D quantum gravity is the idea that a set of discretized surfaces (called map, a graph on a surface), equipped with a graph measure, converges in the large size limit (large number of faces) to a conformal field theory (CFT), and in the simplest case to the simplest CFT known as pure gravity, also known as the gravity dressed (3,2) minimal model. Here we consider the set of planar Strebel graphs (planar trivalent metric graphs) with fixed perimeter faces, with the measure product of Lebesgue measure of all edge lengths, submitted to the perimeter constraints. We prove that expectation values o…
We show that near a point where the equilibrium density of eigenvalues of a matrix model behaves like y ~ x^{p/q}, the correlation functions of a random matrix, are, to leading order in the appropriate scaling, given by determinants of the universal (p,q)-minimal models kernels. Those (p,q) kernels are written in terms of functions solutions of a linear equation of order q, with polynomial coefficients of degree at most p. For example, near a regular edge y ~ x^{1/2}, the (1,2) kernel is the Airy kernel and we recover the Airy law. Those kernels are associated to the (p,q) minimal model, i.e. …
Classical mechanics (CM), like quantum mechanics (QM), can have an operatorial formulation. This was pioneered by Koopman and von Neumann (KvN) in the 30's. They basically formalized, via the introduction of a classical Hilbert space, earlier work of Liouville who had shown that the classical time evolution can take place via an operator, nowadays known as the Liouville operator. In this paper we study how to perform the coupling of a point particle to a gauge field in the KvN version of CM. So we basically implement at the classical operatorial level the analog of the minimal coupling of QM. …
