We study two-dimensional Liouville gravity and minimal string theory on spaces with fixed length boundaries. We find explicit formulas describing the gravitational dressing of bulk and boundary correlators in the disk. Their structure has a striking resemblance with observables in 2d BF (plus a boundary term), associated to a quantum deformation of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$, a connection we develop in some detail. For the case of the $(2,p)$ minimal string theory, we compare and match the results from the continuum approach with a matrix model calculation, and verify that in the large $p$ limit the correlators match with Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We consider multi-boundary amplitudes that we write in terms of gluing bulk one-point functions using a quantum deformation of the Weil-Petersson volumes and gluing measures. Generating functions for genus zero Weil-Petersson volumes are derived, taking the large $p$ limit. Finally, we present preliminary evidence that the bulk theory can be interpreted as a 2d dilaton gravity model with a $\sinh Φ$ dilaton potential.
Recently, string theory on $\text{AdS}_3 \times \text{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ with one unit of NS-NS flux ($k=1$) was argued to be exactly dual to the symmetric orbifold of $ \mathbb{T}^4$, and in particular, the full (unprotected) spectrum was matched between the two descriptions. This duality was later extended to the case with higher NS-NS background flux for which the long string sector was argued to be described by the symmetric product orbifold of $(\mathcal{N}=4$ $\text{Liouville}) \times \mathbb{T}^4$. In this paper we study correlation functions for the bosonic analogue of this dual…
We analyse a simple example of a holographically dual pair in which we topologically twist both theories. The holography is based on the two-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric Liouville conformal field theory that defines a unitary bulk quantum supergravity theory in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The supersymmetric version of three-dimensional Liouville quantum gravity allows for a topological twist on the boundary and in the bulk. We define the topological bulk supergravity theory in terms of twisted boundary conditions. We corroborate the duality by calculating the chiral configuration…
We model the back-reaction of a static observer in four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime by means of a singular $\mathbb Z_q$ quotient. The set of fixed points of the $\mathbb Z_q$ action consists of a pair of codimension two minimal surfaces given by 2-spheres in the Euclidean geometry. The introduction of an orbifold parameter $q>1$ permits the construction of an effective action for the bulk gravity theory with support on each of these minimal surfaces. The effective action corresponds to that of Liouville field theory on a 2-sphere with a finite vacuum expectation value of the Liouville fie…
In light of recent developments in nearly AdS$_2$ holography, we revisit the semi-classical version of two-dimensional dilaton gravity proposed by Callan, Giddings, Harvey, and Strominger (CGHS) in the early 90's. In distinction to the classical model, the quantum corrected CGHS model has an AdS$_2$ vacuum with a constant dilaton. By turning on a non-normalizable mode of the Liouville field, i.e. the conformal mode of the $2d$ gravity, the explicit breaking of the scale invariance renders the AdS$_2$ vacuum nearly AdS$_2$. As a consequence, there emerges an effective one-dimensional Schwarzian…
We analyze cubic spin 3 interaction in AdS space using the higher spin extension of string-theoretic sigma-model constructed in our previous work, which low energy limit is described by AdS vacuum. We find that, in the leading order of the cosmological constant, the spin 3 correlator on the AdS4 string theory side reproduces the structure of 3 point function of composite operators, quadratic in free fields, in the dual vector model. The cancellation of terms violating higher spin holography is related to the value of the Liouville background charge in four dimensions.
We investigate a dilaton gravity model in AdS$_2$ proposed by Almheiri and Polchinski and develop a 1d effective description in terms of a dynamical boundary time with a Schwarzian derivative action. We show that the effective model is equivalent to a 1d version of Liouville theory, and investigate its dynamics and symmetries via a standard canonical framework. We include the coupling to arbitrary conformal matter and analyze the effective action in the presence of possible sources. We compute commutators of local operators at large time separation, and match the result with the time shift due…
We analyse the connections between the Wheeler DeWitt approach for two dimensional quantum gravity and holography, focusing mainly in the case of Liouville theory coupled to $c=1$ matter. Our motivation is to understand whether some form of averaging is essential for the boundary theory, if we wish to describe the bulk quantum gravity path integral of this two dimensional example. The analysis hence, is in a spirit similar to the recent studies of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT)-gravity. Macroscopic loop operators define the asymptotic region on which the holographic boundary dual resides. Matrix quant…
In this paper, we develop a novel way to perturbatively calculate Rényi relative divergences $D_γ(ρ|| σ) ={\rm tr} ρ^γ σ^{1-γ}$ and related quantities without using replica trick as well as analytic continuation. We explicitly determine the form of the perturbative term at any order by an integral along the modular flow of the unperturbed state. By applying the prescription to a class of reduced density matrices in conformal field theory, we find that the second order term of certain linear combination of the divergences has a holographic expression in terms of bulk symplectic form, which is a…
We construct correlators in the $W_4$ Toda 2d conformal field theory for a particular class of representations and demonstrate a relation to a $W_2$ (Virasoro) theory with different central charge. The relevance of the classical limits of the constructed 3-point functions and braiding matrices to problems in 4d conformal theories is discussed.
We discuss various issues related to the understanding of the conformal anomaly matching in CFT from the dual holographic viewpoint. First, we act with a PBH diffeomorphism on a generic 5D RG flow geometry and show that the corresponding on-shell bulk action reproduces the Wess-Zumino term for the dilaton of broken conformal symmetry, with the expected coefficient aUV-aIR. Then we consider a specific 3D example of RG flow whose UV asymptotics is normalizable and admits a 6D lifting. We promote a modulus ρappearing in the geometry to a function of boundary coordinates. In a 6D description ρ is …
We study the one-loop partition function of 3D gravity without cosmological constant on the solid torus with arbitrary metric fluctuations on the boundary. To this end we employ the discrete approach of (quantum) Regge calculus. In contrast with similar calculations performed directly in the continuum, we work with a boundary at finite distance from the torus axis. We show that after taking the continuum limit on the boundary - but still keeping finite distance from the torus axis - the one-loop correction is the same as the one recently found in the continuum in Barnich et al. for an asymptot…
In a theory of quantum gravity, states can be represented as wavefunctionals that assign an amplitude to a given configuration of matter fields and the metric on a spatial slice. These wavefunctionals must obey a set of constraints as a consequence of the diffeomorphism invariance of the theory, the most important of which is known as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We study these constraints perturbatively by expanding them to leading nontrivial order in Newton's constant about a background AdS spacetime. We show that, even within perturbation theory, any wavefunctional that solves these constra…
We perform a detailed study of a class of irregular correlators in Liouville Conformal Field Theory, of the related Virasoro conformal blocks with irregular singularities and of their connection formulae. Upon considering their semi-classical limit, we provide explicit expressions of the connection matrices for the Heun function and a class of its confluences. Their calculation is reduced to concrete combinatorial formulae from conformal block expansions.
Absolutely Maximally Entangled (AME) states are those multipartite quantum states that carry absolute maximum entanglement in all possible partitions. AME states are known to play a relevant role in multipartite teleportation, in quantum secret sharing and they provide the basis novel tensor networks related to holography. We present alternative constructions of AME states and show their link with combinatorial designs. We also analyze a key property of AME, namely their relation to tensors that can be understood as unitary transformations in every of its bi-partitions. We call this property m…
We define a new construct in quantum field theory - the causal density matrix - obtained from the singularity structure of correlators of local operators. This object provides a necessary and sufficient condition for a quantum field theory state to have a holographic semiclassical dual causal geometry. By exploiting the causal density matrix, we find that these dual causal geometries quite generally (even away from AdS/CFT) exhibit features of quantum error correction. Within AdS/CFT, we argue that the "reduced" causal density matrix is the natural dual to the causal wedge. Our formalism is ve…
The reflection operators are the simplest examples of the non-local integrals of motion, which appear in many interesting problems in integrable CFT. For the so-called Fateev, quantum AKNS, paperclip and KdV integrable structures, they are built from the (chiral) reflection S-matrices for the Liouville and cigar CFTs. Here we give the full spectrum of the reflection operators associated with these integrable structures. We also obtained a relation between the reflection S-matrices of the cigar and Liouville CFTs. The results of this work are applicable for the description of the scaling behavi…

Twisted classical solutions to the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model play a key role in the analysis of such models on the spatially compactified cylinder $\mathbb{S}_L^1 \times {\mathbb{R}^1}$ and have recently been shown to be important for the resurgent structure of this quantum field theory. Instantons and non-self-dual solutions both fractionalize, and domain walls formed by such topological solutions can be associated with $N$-vacua having maximally repulsive energy eigenvalues. The purpose of this paper is to reinforce this view through the investigation of a number of parallels between the $\m…
This thesis is devoted to the application of random matrix theory to the study of random surfaces, both discrete and continuous; special emphasis is placed on surface boundaries and the associated boundary conditions in this formalism. In particular, using a multi-matrix integral with permutation symmetry, we are able to calculate the partition function of the Potts model on a random planar lattice with various boundary conditions imposed. We proceed to investigate the correspondence between the critical points in the phase diagram of this model and two-dimensional Liouville theory coupled to …
We propose a new method to define theories of random geometries, using an explicit and simple map between metrics and large hermitian matrices. We outline some of the many possible applications of the formalism. For example, a background-independent measure on the space of metrics can be easily constructed from first principles. Our framework suggests the relevance of a new gravitational effective action and we show that it occurs when coupling the massive scalar field to two-dimensional gravity. This yields new types of quantum gravity models generalizing the standard Liouville case.
