We analyse the connections between the Wheeler DeWitt approach for two dimensional quantum gravity and holography, focusing mainly in the case of Liouville theory coupled to $c=1$ matter. Our motivation is to understand whether some form of averaging is essential for the boundary theory, if we wish to describe the bulk quantum gravity path integral of this two dimensional example. The analysis hence, is in a spirit similar to the recent studies of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT)-gravity. Macroscopic loop operators define the asymptotic region on which the holographic boundary dual resides. Matrix quantum mechanics (MQM) and the associated double scaled fermionic field theory on the contrary, is providing an explicit "unitary in superspace" description of the complete dynamics of such two dimensional universes with matter, including the effects of topology change. If we try to associate a Hilbert space to a single boundary dual, it seems that it cannot contain all the information present in the non-perturbative bulk quantum gravity path integral and MQM.
We solve the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the planar AdS-Schwarzschild interior in a minisuperspace approximation involving the volume and spatial anisotropy of the interior. A Gaussian wavepacket is constructed that is peaked on the classical interior solution. Simple observables are computed using this wavepacket, demonstrating the freedom to a choose a relational notion of `clock' in the interior and characterizing the approach to the spacelike singularity. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation may be extended out through the horizon, where it describes the holographic renormalization group flow of th…
In this paper, the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation is derived in null-foliated 4D spacetimes. WDW equation written in null-foliated spacetime presents an enormous simplification compared to the spacelike-foliated spacetime as the null-foliations are 2D. These can be solved exactly and uniquely to give the vertex operators of non-critical strings as a solution. A correspondence is established between null surfaces in 4D to string worldsheet geometry. Attempts are made to derive the physical consequences of this correspondence.
We compare two different approaches to the treatment of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and the introduction of time in quantum cosmology. One approach is based on the gauge-fixing procedure in theories with first-class constraints, while the other uses the Born-Oppenheimer method. We apply both to a very simple cosmological model and observe that they give similar predictions. We also discuss the problem of time in non-relativistic quantum mechanics and some questions concerning the correspondence between classical and quantum theories.
We consider the Wheeler-DeWitt operator associated with the bosonic part of the Hamiltonian of D=11 supergravity in a formulation with only the spatial components of the three-form and six-form fields, and compare it with the E10 Casimir operator at low levels, to show that these two operators precisely match modulo spatial gradients up to and including gl(10) level two. The uniqueness of the E10 Casimir operator eliminates all ordering ambiguities in the quantum Hamiltonian, at least up to the level considered. Beyond level three the two operators are expected to start to differ from each oth…
We perform the canonical quantization of a general scalar-tensor theory and derive the first quantum gravitational corrections following from a semi-classical expansion of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The non-minimal coupling of the scalar field to gravity induces a derivative coupling between the scalar field and the gravitational degrees of freedom, which prevents a direct application of the expansion scheme. We address this technical difficulty by transforming the theory from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame. We find that a large non-minimal coupling can have strong effects on the qua…
The two-component formalism in quantum cosmology is revisited with a particular emphasis on the identification of time. Its relation with the appearance of imaginary eigenvalues is established. It is explicitly shown how a good choice of the global time prevents this peculiarity.
In this paper, we study the changes of quantum effects of a growing universe by using Wheeler-DeWitt equation (WDWE) together with de Broglie-Bohm quantum trajectory approach. From WDWE, we obtain the quantum modified Friedmann equations which have additional terms called quantum potential compared to standard Friedmann equations. The quantum potential governs the behavior of the early universe, providing energy for inflation, while it decreases rapidly as the universe grows. The quantum potential of the grown-up universe is much smaller than that required for accelerating expansion. This indi…

We re-examine the quantum geometrodynamical approach within the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld theory of gravity, which was first proposed in our previous work [1]. A thorough analysis of the classical Hamiltonian with constraints is carried and the correctness and self-consistency of the modified Wheeler-DeWitt equation (WDW) is studied. We find that based on the newly obtained WDW equation derived with the use of the Dirac brackets, the conclusion reached in Ref.[1] can be corroborated. The big rip singularity present in the classical theory, and induced by a phantom perfect fluid, is expect…
In a theory of quantum gravity, states can be represented as wavefunctionals that assign an amplitude to a given configuration of matter fields and the metric on a spatial slice. These wavefunctionals must obey a set of constraints as a consequence of the diffeomorphism invariance of the theory, the most important of which is known as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We study these constraints perturbatively by expanding them to leading nontrivial order in Newton's constant about a background AdS spacetime. We show that, even within perturbation theory, any wavefunctional that solves these constra…
One of the central difficulties in the quantization of the gravitational interactions is that they are described by a set of constraints. The standard strategy for dealing with the problem is the Dirac quantization procedure, which leads to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. However, solutions to the equation are known only for specific symmetry-reduced systems, including models of quantum cosmology. Novel methods, which enable solving the equation for complex gravitational configurations are, therefore, worth seeking. Here, we propose and investigate a new method of solving the Wheeler-DeWitt equat…
A system consisting of a point particle coupled to gravity is investigated. The set of constraints is derived. It was found that a suitable superposition of those constraints is the generator of the infinitesimal transformations of the time coordinate $t\equiv x^0$ and serves as the Hamiltonian which gives the correct equations of motion. Besides that, the system satisfies the mass shell constraint, $p^μp_μ- m^2 = 0$, which is the generator of the worldsheet reparametrizations, where the momenta $p_μ$, $μ=0,1,2,3$, generate infinitesimal changes of the particle's position $X^μ$ in spacetime. C…
We study the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation close to the Big-Bang. We argue that an interaction dominated fluid (speed of sound equal to the speed of light), if present, would dominate during such an early phase. Such a fluid with $p=ρ\propto1/a^{6}$ generates a term in the potential of the wave function of the WDW equation proportional to $-1/a^{2}.\ $This very peculiar quantum potential, which embodies a spontaneous breaking of dilatation invariance, has some very remarkable consequences for the wave function of the Universe: $Ψ(a)$ vanishes at the Big-Bang: $Ψ(0)=0$; the wave function $Ψ(a)$…
