Relying on the analysis of characteristics, we prove the uniqueness of conservative solutions to the variational wave equation $u_{tt}-c(u) (c(u)u_x)_x=0$. Given a solution $u(t,x)$, even if the wave speed $c(u)$ is only Hölder continuous in the $t$-$x$ plane, one can still define forward and backward characteristics in a unique way. Using a new set of independent variables $X,Y$, constant along characteristics, we prove that $t,x,u$, together with other variables, satisfy a semilinear system with smooth coefficients. From the uniqueness of the solution to this semilinear system, one obtains the uniqueness of conservative solutions to the Cauchy problem for the wave equation with general initial data $u(0,\cdot)\in H^1(\mathbb{R})$, $u_t(0,\cdot)\in L^2(\mathbb{R})$.
We establish the existence of a conservative weak solution to the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear variational wave equation $u_{tt} - c(u)(c(u)u_x)_x=0$, for initial data of finite energy. Here $c(\cdot)$ is any smooth function with uniformly positive bounded values.
We prove the existence of a global semigroup for conservative solutions of the nonlinear variational wave equation $u_{tt}-c(u)(c(u)u_x)_x=0$. We allow for initial data $u|_{t=0}$ and $u_t|_{t=0}$ that contain measures. We assume that $0<κ^{-1}\le c(u) \le κ$. Solutions of this equation may experience concentration of the energy density $(u_t^2+c(u)^2u_x^2)dx$ into sets of measure zero. The solution is constructed by introducing new variables related to the characteristics, whereby singularities in the energy density become manageable. Furthermore, we prove that the energy may only focus on a …
The integrable Novikov equation can be regarded as one of the Camassa-Holm-type equations with cubic nonlinearity. In this paper, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of the Hölder continuous energy conservative solutions for the Cauchy problem of the Novikov equation.
This paper is devoted to the study of the existence and uniqueness of global admissible conservative weak solutions for the periodic single-cycle pulse equation. We first transform the equation into an equivalent semilinear system by introducing a new set of variables. Using the standard ordinary differential equation theory, we then obtain the global solution to the semilinear system. Next, returning to the original coordinates, we get the global admissible conservative weak solution for the periodic single-cycle pulse equation. Finally, given an admissible conservative weak solution, we find…
We show that the Hunter-Saxton equation $u_t+uu_x=\frac14\big(\int_{-\infty}^x dμ(t,z)- \int^{\infty}_x dμ(t,z)\big)$ and $μ_t+(uμ)_x=0$ has a unique, global, weak, and conservative solution $(u,μ)$ of the Cauchy problem on the line.
In this paper, we prove that the existence and uniqueness of globally weak solutions to the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative Camassa-Holm equation in time weighted $H^1$ space. First, we derive an equivalent semi-linear system by introducing some new variables, and present the globally conservative solutions of this equation in time weighted $H^1$ space. Second, we show that the peakon solutions are conservative weak solutions in $H^1.$ Finally, given a conservative solution, we introduce a set of auxiliary variables tailored to this particular solution, and prove that these variables…
The paper provides a direct proof the uniqueness of solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation, based on characteristics. Given a conservative solution $u=u(t,x)$, an equation is introduced which singles out a unique characteristic curve through each initial point. By studying the evolution of the quantities $u$ and $v= 2\arctan u_x$ along each characteristic, it is proved that the Cauchy problem with general initial data $u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R})$ has a unique solution, globally in time.
We define a kinetic and a potential energy such that the principle of stationary action from Lagrangian mechanics yields a Camassa--Holm system (2CH) as the governing equations. After discretizing these energies, we use the same variational principle to derive a semi-discrete system of equations as an approximation of the 2CH system. The discretizaton is only available in Lagrangian coordinates and requires the inversion of a discrete Sturm--Liouville operator with time-varying coefficients. We show the existence of fundamental solutions for this operator at initial time with appropriate decay…
We use a sticky particle method to show global existence of (energy) conservative sticky $N$-peakon solutions to the modified Camassa-Holm equation. A dispersion regularization is provided as a selection principle for the uniqueness of conservative $N$-peakon solutions. The dispersion limit avoids the collision between peakons, and numerical results show that the dispersion limit is exactly the sticky peakons. At last, when the splitting of peakons is allowed, we give an example to show the non-uniqueness of conservative solutions.
We investigate the equation $(u_t + (f(u))_x)_x = f''(u) (u_x)^2/2$ where $f(u)$ is a given smooth function. Typically $f(u)= u^2/2$ or $u^3/3$. This equation models unidirectional and weakly nonlinear waves for the variational wave equation $u_{tt} - c(u) (c(u)u_x)_x =0$ which models some liquid crystals with a natural sinusoidal $c$. The equation itself is also the Euler-Lagrange equation of a variational problem. Two natural classes of solutions can be associated with this equation. A conservative solution will preserve its energy in time, while a dissipative weak solution loses energy at t…
The article presents the existence and mass conservation of solution for the discrete Safronov-Dubovski coagulation equation for the product coalescence coefficients $ϕ$ such that $ϕ_{i,j} \leq ij$ $\forall$ $i,j \in \mathbb{N}$. Both conservative and non-conservative truncated systems are used to analyse the infinite system of ODEs. In the conservative case, Helly's selection theorem is used to prove the global existence while for the non-conservative part, we make use of the refined version of De la Vallée-Poussin theorem to establish the existence. Further, it is shown that these solutions …
In this paper we prove the uniqueness and radial symmetry of minimizers for variational problems that model several phenomena. The uniqueness is a consequence of the convexity of the functional. The main technique is Fourier transform of tempered distributions.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of measure solutions to the conservative renewal equation and analyze their long time behavior. The solutions are built by using a duality approach. This construction is well suited to apply the Doeblin's argument which ensures the exponential relaxation of the solutions to the equilibrium.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of variational solution to the nonlinear Neumann boundary problem for the $p^{th}$-Sub-Laplacian associated to a system of Hörmander vector fields
The paper introduces a new way to construct dissipative solutions to a second order variational wave equation. By a variable transformation, from the nonlinear PDE one obtains a semilinear hyperbolic system with sources. In contrast with the conservative case, here the source terms are discontinuous and the discontinuities are not always crossed transversally. Solutions to the semilinear system are obtained by an approximation argument, relying on Kolmogorov's compactness theorem. Reverting to the original variables, one recovers a solution to the nonlinear wave equation where the total energy…
Starting from the classic contraction mapping principle, we establish a general, flexible, variational setting that turns out to be applicable to many situations of existence in Differential Equations. We show its potentiality with some selected examples including initial-value, Cauchy problems for ODEs; non-linear, monotone PDEs; linear and non-linear hyperbolic problems; and steady Navier-Stokes systems.
In this paper, we develop a natural operator-splitting variational scheme for a general class of non-local, degenerate conservative-dissipative evolutionary equations. The splitting-scheme consists of two phases: a conservative (transport) phase and a dissipative (diffusion) phase. The first phase is solved exactly using the method of characteristic and DiPerna-Lions theory while the second phase is solved approximately using a JKO-type variational scheme that minimizes an energy functional with respect to a certain Kantorovich optimal transport cost functional. In addition, we also introduce …
We prove global existence in time of solutions to relaxed conservative cross diffusion systems governed by nonlinear operators of the form $u_i\to \partial_tu_i-Δ(a_i(\tilde{u})u_i)$ where the $u_i, i=1,...,I$ represent $I$ density-functions, $\tilde{u}$ is a spatially regularized form of $(u_1,...,u_I)$ and the nonlinearities $a_i$ are merely assumed to be continuous and bounded from below. Existence of global weak solutions is obtained in any space dimension. Solutions are proved to be regular and unique when the $a_i$ are locally Lipschitz continuous.
We consider the minimization problem for an integral functional $J$, possibly non-convex and non-coercive in $W^{1,1}_0(Ω)$, where $Ω\subset\R^n$ is a bounded smooth set. We prove sufficient conditions in order to guarantee that a suitable Minkowski distance is a minimizer of $J$. The main result is a necessary and sufficient condition in order to have the uniqueness of the minimizer. We show some application to the uniqueness of solution of a system of PDEs of Monge-Kantorovich type arising in problems of mass transfer theory.
We propose three new discrete variational schemes that capture the conservative-dissipative structure of a generalized Kramers equation. The first two schemes are single-step minimization schemes while the third one combines a streaming and a minimization step. The cost functionals in the schemes are inspired by the rate functional in the Freidlin-Wentzell theory of large deviations for the underlying stochastic system. We prove that all three schemes converge to the solution of the generalized Kramers equation.

In this paper, we explore Bertrand and Cournot Mean Field Games models for market competition with reflection boundary conditions. We prove existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions to the system of equations, and show that this system can be written as an optimality condition of a convex minimization problem. We also provide a short proof of uniqueness to the system addressed in [Graber, P. and Ben- soussan, A., Existence and uniqueness of solutions for Bertrand and Cournot mean field games, Applied Mathematics & Optimization (2016)], where uniqueness was only proved for small paramet…
Let $u_{g}$ the unique solution of a parabolic variational inequality of second kind, with a given $g$. Using a regularization method, we prove, for all $g_{1}$ and $g_{2}$, a monotony property between $μu_{g_{1}} + (1-μ)u_{g_{2}}$ and $u_{μg_{1} + (1-μ)g_{2}}$ for $μ\in [0, 1]$. This allowed us to prove the existence and uniqueness results to a family of optimal control problems over $g$ for each heat transfer coefficient $h>0$, associated to the Newton law, and of another optimal control problem associated to a Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove also, when $h\to +\infty$, the strong conv…
We prove existence and uniqueness of minimizers for a family of energy functionals that arises in Elasticity and involves polyconvex integrands over a certain subset of displacement maps. This work extends previous results by Awi and Gangbo to a larger class of integrands. First, we study these variational problems over displacements for which the determinant is positive. Second, we consider a limit case in which the functionals are degenerate. In that case, the set of admissible displacements reduces to that of incompressible displacements which are measure preserving maps. Finally, we establ…
The Euler-$α$ equations model the averaged motion of an ideal incompressible fluid when filtering over spatial scales smaller than $α$. We show that there exists $β>1$ such that weak solutions to the two and three dimensional Euler-$α$ equations in the class $C^0_t H^β_x$ are not unique and may not conserve the Hamiltonian of the system, thus demonstrating flexibility in this regularity class. The construction utilizes a Nash-style intermittent convex integration scheme. We also formulate an appropriate version of the Onsager conjecture for Euler-$α$, postulating that the threshold between rig…
This paper mainly considers three iterations based on charge-conservative finite element approximation in Lipschitz domain for the stationary thermally coupled inductionless MHD equations. Based on the hybrid finite element method, the unknowns of hydrodynamic are discretized by the stable velocity-pressure finite element pair, and the current density along with electric potential are similarly discretized by the comforming finite element pair in $\boldsymbol{H}(\boldsymbol{div}, Ω)\times L^2(Ω)$. And on account of the strong nonlinearity of the equations, we present three coupled iterative me…
Let $h$ be a quadratic form with domain $W_0^{1,2}(\Ri^d)$ given by \[ h(φ)=\sum^d_{i,j=1}(\partial_iφ,c_{ij}\,\partial_jφ) \] where $c_{ij}=c_{ji}$ are real-valued, locally bounded, measurable functions and $C=(c_{ij})\geq 0 $. If $C$ is strongly elliptic, i.e.\ if there exist $λ, μ>0$ such that $λ\,I\geq C\geq μ\,I>0$, then $h$ is closable, the closure determines a positive self-adjoint operator $H$ on $L_2(\Ri^d)$ which generates a submarkovian semigroup $S$ with a positive distributional kernel~$K$ and the kernel satisfies Gaussian upper and lower bounds. Moreover, $S$ is conservative, i.e…
Consider time-harmonic electromagnetic wave scattering from a biperiodic dielectric structure mounted on a perfectly conducting plate in three dimensions. Given that uniqueness of solution holds, existence of solution follows from a well-known Fredholm framework for the variational formulation of the problem in a suitable Sobolev space. In this paper, we derive a Rellich identity for a solution to this variational problem under suitable smoothness conditions on the material parameter. Under additional non-trapping assumptions on the material parameter, this identity allows us to establish uniq…
In this paper we characterize the regularity structure, as well as show the global-in-time existence and uniqueness, of (energy) conservative solutions to the Hunter-Saxton equation by using the method of characteristics. The major difference between the current work and previous results is that we are able to characterize the singularities of energy measure and their nature in a very precise manner. In particular, we show that singularities, whose temporal and spatial locations are also explicitly given in this work, may only appear at at most countably many times, and are completely determin…
We consider partial differential equations (PDE) of drift-diffusion type in the unit interval, supplemented by either two conservation laws or by a conservation law and a further boundary condition. We treat two different cases: (i) uniform parabolic problems; (ii) degenerated problems at the boundaries. The former can be treated in a very general and complete way, much as the traditional boundary value problems. The latter, however, bring new issues, and we restrict our study to a class of forward Kolmogorov equations that arise naturally when the corresponding stochastic process has either o…
We consider the stochastic 2-dimensional Cahn-Hilliard equation which is driven by the derivative in space of a space-time white noise. We use two different approaches to study this equation. First we prove that there exists a unique solution $Y$ to the shifted equation (see (1.4) below), then $X:=Y+{Z}$ is the unique solution to stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equaiton, where ${Z}$ is the corresponding O-U process. Moreover, we use Dirichlet form approach in \cite{Albeverio:1991hk} to construct the probabilistically weak solution the the original equation (1.1) below. By clarifying the precise relat…
We present two semidiscretizations of the Camassa-Holm equation in periodic domains based on variational formulations and energy conservation. The first is a periodic version of an existing conservative multipeakon method on the real line, for which we propose efficient computation algorithms inspired by works of Camassa and collaborators. The second method, and of primary interest, is the periodic counterpart of a novel discretization of a two-component Camassa-Holm system based on variational principles in Lagrangian variables. Applying explicit ODE solvers to integrate in time, we compare t…
In this paper we consider feedback stabilization for parabolic variational inequalities of obstacle type with time and space depending reaction and convection coefficients and show exponential stabilization to nonstationary trajectories. Based on a Moreau-Yosida approximation, a feedback operator is established using a finite (and uniform in the approximation index) number of actuators leading to exponential decay of given rate of the state variable. Several numerical examples are presented addressing smooth and nonsmooth obstacle functions.
This thesis is devoted to the study of well-posedness properties of some geometric variational problems: existence, regularity and uniqueness of solutions. We study two specific problems arising in the context of geometric calculus of variations and sharing strong analogies: the Plateau's problem and the optimal branched transport problem. The first part of the thesis discusses the existence theory. Both problems are formulated in the language of Federer and Fleming's theory of currents. After an exposition of the main results, we will present the core ideas of the (interior) regularity theory…
In this paper we study a system of variational inequalities where the operator is non-local, possibly degenerate and of second order. A special case of this type of problem occurs in the context of optimal switching problems when the dynamics of the underlying state variables is described by an N-dimensional Levy process. We establish a general comparison principle for viscosity sub- and supersolutions to the system under mild regularity, growth and structural assumptions on the data. Using the comparison principle we then prove the existence of a unique viscosity solution to the system by Per…
The present article is devoted to well-posedness by noise for the continuity equation. Namely, we consider the continuity equation with non-linear and partially degenerate stochastic perturbations in divergence form. We prove the existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions under hypotheses on the velocity field which are weaker than those required in the deterministic setting. This extends related results of [Flandoli, Gubinelli, Priola; Invent. Math., 2010] applicable for linear multiplicative noise to a non-linear setting. The existence proof relies on a duality argument which makes use of…
We prove pathwise uniqueness for solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with conservative multiplicative noise on compact 3D manifolds. In particular, we generalize the result by Burq, Gérard and Tzvetkov (N. Burq, P. Gérard, and N. Tzvetkov. Strichartz inequalities and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on compact manifolds. American Journal of Mathematics, 126 (3):569--605, 2004) to the stochastic setting. The proof is based on deterministic and stochastic Strichartz estimates and the Littlewood-Paley decomposition.
The modified Camassa-Holm equation (also called FORQ) is one of numerous $cousins$ of the Camassa-Holm equation possessing non-smoth solitons ($peakons$) as special solutions. The peakon sector of solutions is not uniquely defined: in one peakon sector (dissapative) the Sobolev $H^1$ norm is not preserved, in the other sector (conservative), introduced in [2], the time evolution of peakons leaves the $H^1$ norm invariant. In this Letter, it is shown that the conservative peakon equations of the modified Camassa-Holm can be given an appropriate Poisson structure relative to which the equations …
We study an interacting particle system in $\mathbf{R}^d$ motivated by Stein variational gradient descent [Q. Liu and D. Wang, NIPS 2016], a deterministic algorithm for sampling from a given probability density with unknown normalization. We prove that in the large particle limit the empirical measure of the particle system converges to a solution of a non-local and nonlinear PDE. We also prove global existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solution to the limiting PDE. Finally, we prove that the solution to the PDE converges to the unique invariant solution in long time limit.
