This paper is devoted to the study of the existence and uniqueness of global admissible conservative weak solutions for the periodic single-cycle pulse equation. We first transform the equation into an equivalent semilinear system by introducing a new set of variables. Using the standard ordinary differential equation theory, we then obtain the global solution to the semilinear system. Next, returning to the original coordinates, we get the global admissible conservative weak solution for the periodic single-cycle pulse equation. Finally, given an admissible conservative weak solution, we find a equation to single out a unique characteristic curve through each initial point and prove the uniqueness of global admissible conservative weak solution without any additional assumptions.
We study the Riemann problem for the multidimensional compressible isentropic Euler equations. Using the framework developed by Chiodaroli, De Lellis, Kreml and based on the techniques of De Lellis and Székelyhidi, we extend our previous results and prove that whenever the initial Riemann data give rise to a self-similar solution consisting of one admissible shock and one rarefaction wave and are not too far from lying on a simple shock wave, the problem admits also infinitely many admissible weak solutions.
The integrable Novikov equation can be regarded as one of the Camassa-Holm-type equations with cubic nonlinearity. In this paper, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of the Hölder continuous energy conservative solutions for the Cauchy problem of the Novikov equation.
We consider admissible weak solutions to the compressible Euler system with source terms, which include rotating shallow water system and the Euler system with damping as special examples. In the case of anti-symmetric sources such as rotations, for general piecewise Lipschitz initial densities and some suitably constructed initial momentum, we obtain infinitely many global admissible weak solutions. Furthermore, we construct a class of finite-states admissible weak solutions to the Euler system with anti-symmetric sources. Under the additional smallness assumption on the initial densities, we…
In this paper, we prove that the existence and uniqueness of globally weak solutions to the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative Camassa-Holm equation in time weighted $H^1$ space. First, we derive an equivalent semi-linear system by introducing some new variables, and present the globally conservative solutions of this equation in time weighted $H^1$ space. Second, we show that the peakon solutions are conservative weak solutions in $H^1.$ Finally, given a conservative solution, we introduce a set of auxiliary variables tailored to this particular solution, and prove that these variables…
We show that the Hunter-Saxton equation $u_t+uu_x=\frac14\big(\int_{-\infty}^x dμ(t,z)- \int^{\infty}_x dμ(t,z)\big)$ and $μ_t+(uμ)_x=0$ has a unique, global, weak, and conservative solution $(u,μ)$ of the Cauchy problem on the line.
The paper provides a direct proof the uniqueness of solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation, based on characteristics. Given a conservative solution $u=u(t,x)$, an equation is introduced which singles out a unique characteristic curve through each initial point. By studying the evolution of the quantities $u$ and $v= 2\arctan u_x$ along each characteristic, it is proved that the Cauchy problem with general initial data $u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R})$ has a unique solution, globally in time.
We consider the isentropic Euler equations of gas dynamics in the whole two-dimensional space and we prove the existence of a $C^\infty$ initial datum which admits infinitely many bounded admissible weak solutions. Taking advantage of the relation between smooth solutions to the Euler system and to the Burgers equation we construct a smooth compression wave which collapses into a perturbed Riemann state at some time instant $T > 0$. In order to continue the solution after the formation of the discontinuity, we adjust and apply the theory developed by De Lellis and Székelyhidi and we construct …
The question of well- and ill-posedness of entropy admissible solutions to the multi-dimensional systems of conservation laws has been studied recently in the case of isentropic Euler equations. In this context special initial data were considered, namely the 1D Riemann problem which is extended trivially to a second space dimension. It was shown that there exist infinitely many bounded entropy admissible weak solutions to such a 2D Riemann problem for isentropic Euler equations, if the initial data give rise to a 1D self-similar solution containing a shock. In this work we study such a 2D Rie…
We use a sticky particle method to show global existence of (energy) conservative sticky $N$-peakon solutions to the modified Camassa-Holm equation. A dispersion regularization is provided as a selection principle for the uniqueness of conservative $N$-peakon solutions. The dispersion limit avoids the collision between peakons, and numerical results show that the dispersion limit is exactly the sticky peakons. At last, when the splitting of peakons is allowed, we give an example to show the non-uniqueness of conservative solutions.
Relying on the analysis of characteristics, we prove the uniqueness of conservative solutions to the variational wave equation $u_{tt}-c(u) (c(u)u_x)_x=0$. Given a solution $u(t,x)$, even if the wave speed $c(u)$ is only Hölder continuous in the $t$-$x$ plane, one can still define forward and backward characteristics in a unique way. Using a new set of independent variables $X,Y$, constant along characteristics, we prove that $t,x,u$, together with other variables, satisfy a semilinear system with smooth coefficients. From the uniqueness of the solution to this semilinear system, one obtains t…
The article presents the existence and mass conservation of solution for the discrete Safronov-Dubovski coagulation equation for the product coalescence coefficients $ϕ$ such that $ϕ_{i,j} \leq ij$ $\forall$ $i,j \in \mathbb{N}$. Both conservative and non-conservative truncated systems are used to analyse the infinite system of ODEs. In the conservative case, Helly's selection theorem is used to prove the global existence while for the non-conservative part, we make use of the refined version of De la Vallée-Poussin theorem to establish the existence. Further, it is shown that these solutions …
This paper is concerned with the existence of compactly supported admissible solutions to the Cauchy problem for the isentropic compressible Euler equations. In more than one space dimension, convex integration techniques developed by De Lellis-Székelyhidi and Chiodaroli enable us to prove failure of uniqueness on a finite time-interval for admissible solutions starting from any continuously differentiable initial density and suitably constructed bounded initial momenta. In particular, this extends Chiodaroli's work from periodic boundary conditions to bounded domains or the whole space.
We establish a weak-strong uniqueness result for the isentropic compressible Euler equations, that is: As long as a sufficiently regular solution exists, all energy-admissible weak solutions with the same initial data coincide with it. The main novelty in this contribution, compared to previous literature, is that we allow for possible vacuum in the strong solution.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of measure solutions to the conservative renewal equation and analyze their long time behavior. The solutions are built by using a duality approach. This construction is well suited to apply the Doeblin's argument which ensures the exponential relaxation of the solutions to the equilibrium.
An initial-boundary value problem for the n-dimensional ($n$ is a natural number from the interval [2,7]) Kuramoto-Sivashinsky-Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation posed on smooth bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ was considered. The existence and uniqueness of global regular solutions as well as their exponential decay have been established. A connection between an order of the stationary part of the equation and admissible dimensions of a domain has been revealed. Keywords: Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation, Global solutions
We consider rotational initial data for the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations on an annulus. Using the convex integration framework, we show that there exist infinitely many admissible weak solutions (i.e. such with non-increasing energy) for such initial data. As a consequence, on bounded domains there exist admissible weak solutions which are not dissipative in the sense of P.-L. Lions, as opposed to the case without physical boundaries. Moreover we show that admissible solutions are dissipative provided they are Hölder continuous near the boundary of the domain.
We prove that the electromagnetic material parameters are uniquely determined by boundary measurements for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations in certain anisotropic settings. We give a uniqueness result in the inverse problem for Maxwell equations on an admissible Riemannian manifold, and a uniqueness result for Maxwell equations in Euclidean space with admissible matrix coefficients. The proofs are based on a new Fourier analytic construction of complex geometrical optics solutions on admissible manifolds, and involve a proper notion of uniqueness for such solutions.
In this paper we deal with the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Euler equations in the three-dimensional periodic setting. We prove non-uniqueness for an $L^2$-dense set of Hölder continuous initial data in the class of Hölder continuous admissible weak solutions for all exponents below the Onsager-critical $1/3$. This improves previous results on non-uniqueness obtained by Daneri in arXiv:1302.0988 and by Daneri and Szekelyhidi Jr. in arXiv:1603.09714 and generalizes the result obtained by Buckmaster, De Lellis, Szekelyhidi Jr. and Vicol in arXiv:1701.08678.
We show global well-posedness and exponential stability of equilibria for a general class of nonlinear dissipative bulk-interface systems. They correspond to thermodynamically consistent gradient structure models of bulk-interface interaction. The setting includes nonlinear slow and fast diffusion in the bulk and nonlinear coupled diffusion on the interface. Additional driving mechanisms can be included and non-smooth geometries and coefficients are admissible, to some extent. An important application are volume-surface reaction-diffusion systems with nonlinear coupled diffusion.
In this article, we study the vanishing order of solutions to second order elliptic equations with singular lower order terms in the plane. In particular, we derive lower bounds for solutions on arbitrarily small balls in terms of the Lebesgue norms of the lower order terms for all admissible exponents. Then we show that a scaling argument allows us to pass from these vanishing order estimates to estimates for the rate of decay of solutions at infinity. Our proofs rely on a new $L^p - L^q$ Carleman estimate for the Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
Let $h$ be a quadratic form with domain $W_0^{1,2}(\Ri^d)$ given by \[ h(φ)=\sum^d_{i,j=1}(\partial_iφ,c_{ij}\,\partial_jφ) \] where $c_{ij}=c_{ji}$ are real-valued, locally bounded, measurable functions and $C=(c_{ij})\geq 0 $. If $C$ is strongly elliptic, i.e.\ if there exist $λ, μ>0$ such that $λ\,I\geq C\geq μ\,I>0$, then $h$ is closable, the closure determines a positive self-adjoint operator $H$ on $L_2(\Ri^d)$ which generates a submarkovian semigroup $S$ with a positive distributional kernel~$K$ and the kernel satisfies Gaussian upper and lower bounds. Moreover, $S$ is conservative, i.e…
In this paper we address the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Euler equations in the periodic setting. Based on estimates developed in [Buckmaster-De Lellis-Isett-Székelyhidi], we prove that the set of Hölder $1\slash 5-\eps$ wild initial data is dense in $L^2$, where we call an initial datum wild if it admits infinitely many admissible Hölder $1\slash 5-\eps$ weak solutions. We also introduce a new set of stationary flows which we use as a perturbation profile instead of Beltrami flows to recover arbitrary Reynolds stresses.
The Cauchy problem for a multidimensional linear transport equation with discontinuous coefficient is investigated. Provided the coefficient satisfies a one-sided Lipschitz condition, existence, uniqueness and weak stability of solutions are obtained for either the conservative backward problem or the advective forward problem by duality. Specific uniqueness criteria are introduced for the backward conservation equation since weak solutions are not unique. A main point is the introduction of a generalized flow in the sense of partial differential equations, which is proved to have unique jacob…
We prove weak-strong uniqueness in the class of admissible measure-valued solutions for the isentropic Euler equations in any space dimension and for the Savage-Hutter model of granular flows in one and two space dimensions. For the latter system, we also show the complete dissipation of momentum in finite time, thus rigorously justifying an assumption that has been made in the engineering and numerical literature.
We propose a new approach for proving uniqueness of semi-wavefronts in generally non-monotone monostable reaction-diffusion equations with distributed delay. This allows to solve an open problem concerning the uniqueness of non-monotone (hence, slowly oscillating) semi-wavefronts to the KPP-Fisher equation with delay. Similarly, a broad family of the Mackey-Glass type diffusive equations is shown to possess a unique (up to translation) semi-wavefront for each admissible speed.
We show the existence of infinitely many admissible weak solutions for the incompressible porous media equations for all Muskat-type initial data with $C^{3,α}$-regularity of the interface in the unstable regime and for all non-horizontal data with $C^{3,α}$-regularity in the stable regime. Our approach involves constructing admissible subsolutions with piecewise constant densities. This allows us to give a rather short proof where it suffices to calculate the velocity and acceleration at time zero - thus emphasizing the instantaneous nature of non-uniqueness due to discontinuities in the init…
In this paper, the existence and multiplicity of nontrivial radial convex solutions to general coupled system of $k_i$-Hessian equations in a unit ball are studied via a fixed-point theorem. In particular, we obtain the uniqueness of nontrivial radial convex solution and nonexistence of nontrivial radial $\boldsymbol{k}$-admissible solution to a power-type system coupled by $k_i$-Hessian equations in a unit ball. Moreover, using a generalized Krein-Rutman theorem, the existence of $\boldsymbol{k}$-admissible solutions to an eigenvalue problem in a general strictly $(k-1)$-convex domain is also…
This paper mainly considers three iterations based on charge-conservative finite element approximation in Lipschitz domain for the stationary thermally coupled inductionless MHD equations. Based on the hybrid finite element method, the unknowns of hydrodynamic are discretized by the stable velocity-pressure finite element pair, and the current density along with electric potential are similarly discretized by the comforming finite element pair in $\boldsymbol{H}(\boldsymbol{div}, Ω)\times L^2(Ω)$. And on account of the strong nonlinearity of the equations, we present three coupled iterative me…
In this paper we characterize the regularity structure, as well as show the global-in-time existence and uniqueness, of (energy) conservative solutions to the Hunter-Saxton equation by using the method of characteristics. The major difference between the current work and previous results is that we are able to characterize the singularities of energy measure and their nature in a very precise manner. In particular, we show that singularities, whose temporal and spatial locations are also explicitly given in this work, may only appear at at most countably many times, and are completely determin…
We prove pathwise uniqueness for solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with conservative multiplicative noise on compact 3D manifolds. In particular, we generalize the result by Burq, Gérard and Tzvetkov (N. Burq, P. Gérard, and N. Tzvetkov. Strichartz inequalities and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on compact manifolds. American Journal of Mathematics, 126 (3):569--605, 2004) to the stochastic setting. The proof is based on deterministic and stochastic Strichartz estimates and the Littlewood-Paley decomposition.
The present article is devoted to well-posedness by noise for the continuity equation. Namely, we consider the continuity equation with non-linear and partially degenerate stochastic perturbations in divergence form. We prove the existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions under hypotheses on the velocity field which are weaker than those required in the deterministic setting. This extends related results of [Flandoli, Gubinelli, Priola; Invent. Math., 2010] applicable for linear multiplicative noise to a non-linear setting. The existence proof relies on a duality argument which makes use of…
In this paper we derive the linear elastic Cosserat shell model incorporating effects up to order $O(h^5)$ in the shell thickness $h$ as a particular case of the recently introduced geometrically nonlinear elastic Cosserat shell model. The existence and uniqueness of the solution is proven in suitable admissible sets. To this end, inequalities of Korn-type for shells are established which allow to show coercivity in the Lax-Milgram theorem. We are also showing an existence and uniqueness result for a truncated $O(h^3)$ model. Main issue is the suitable treatment of the curved reference configu…
The Brio system is a two-by-two system of conservation laws arising as a simplified model in ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The system has the form \begin{align*} \partial_t u+\partial_x \Big({\textstyle \frac{u^2+v^2}{2}}\Big)=0,\\ \partial_t v+\partial_x \big(v(u-1)\big)=0. \end{align*} It was found in previous works that the standard theory of hyperbolic conservation laws does not apply to this system since the characteristic fields are not genuinely nonlinear on the set $v=0$. As a consequence, certain Riemann problems have no weak solutions in the traditional class of functions of boun…
We introduce and discuss spatially homogeneous Maxwell-type models of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation undergoing binary collisions with a random component. The random contribution to collisions is such that the usual collisional invariants of mass, momentum and energy do not hold pointwise, even if they all hold in the mean. Under this assumption it is shown that, while the Boltzmann equation has the usual conserved quantities, it possesses a steady state with power-like tails for certain random variables. A similar situation occurs in kinetic models of economy recently considered by two of t…
The main goal of this paper is to present orbital stability results of periodic standing waves for the one-dimensional logarithmic Klein-Gordon equation. To do so, we first use compactness arguments and a non-standard analysis to obtain the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for the associated Cauchy problem in the energy space. Second, we prove the orbital stability of standing waves using a stablity analysis of conservative systems.
We consider the problem of developing a method to reconstruct a potential $q$ from the partial data Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the Schrödinger equation $(-Δ_g+q)u=0$ on a fixed admissible manifold $(M,g)$. If the part of the boundary that is inaccessible for measurements satisfies a flatness condition in one direction, then we reconstruct the local attenuated geodesic ray transform of the one-dimensional Fourier transform of the potential $q$. This allows us to reconstruct $q$ locally, if the local (unattenuated) geodesic ray transform is constructively invertible. We also reconstruct $q$ gl…
