The complexity measures of the Crámer-Rao, Fisher-Shannon and LMC (López-Ruiz, Mancini and Calvet) types of the Rakhmanov probability density $ρ_n(x)=ω(x) p_n^2(x)$ of the polynomials $p_n(x)$ orthogonal with respect to the weight function $ω(x)$, $x\in (a,b)$, are used to quantify various two-fold facets of the spreading of the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi systems all over their corresponding orthogonality intervals in both analytical and computational ways. Their explicit (Crámer-Rao) and asymptotical (Fisher-Shannon, LMC) values are given for the three systems of orthogonal polynomials. Then, these complexity-type mathematical quantities are numerically examined in terms of the polynomial's degree $n$ and the parameters which characterize the weight function. Finally, several open problems about the generalised hypergeometric functions of Lauricella and Srivastava-Daoust types, as well as on the asymptotics of weighted $L_q$-norms of Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials are pointed out.
We complete the construction of raising and lowering operators, given in a previous work, for the orthogonal polynomials of hypergeometric type on non-homogeneous lattice, and extend these operators to the generalized orthogonal polynomials, namely, those difference of orthogonal polynomials that satisfy a similar difference equation of hypergeometric type.
A hypergeometric type equation satisfying certain conditions defines either a finite or an infinite system of orthogonal polynomials. We present in a unified and explicit way all these systems of orthogonal polynomials, the associated special functions and the corresponding raising/lowering operators. This general formalism allows us to extend some known results to a larger class of functions.
Explicit expressions for the Hahn multiple polynomials of type I, in terms of Kampé de Fériet hypergeometric series, are given. Orthogonal and biorthogonal relations are proven. Then, part of the Askey scheme for multiple orthogonal polynomials type I is completed. In particular, explicit expressions in terms of generalized hypergeometric series and Kampé de Fériet hypergeometric series, are given for the multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I for the Jacobi-Piñeiro, Meixner I, Meixner II, Kravchuk, Laguerre I, Laguerre II and Charlier families.
The Krein-like $r$-functionals of the hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials $\{p_{n}(x) \}$ with kernel of the form $x^{s}[ω(x)]^βp_{m_{1}}(x)\ldots p_{m_{r}}(x)$, being $ω(x)$ the weight function on the interval $Δ\in\mathbb{R}$, are determined by means of the Srivastava linearization method. The particular $2$-functionals, which are particularly relevant in quantum physics, are explicitly given in terms of the degrees and the characteristic parameters of the polynomials. They include the well-known power moments and the novel Krein-like moments. Moreover, various related types of exponential…
Via the solutions of systems of algebraic equations of Bethe Ansatz type, we arrive at bounds for the zeros of orthogonal (basic) hypergeometric polynomials belonging to the Askey-Wilson, Wilson and continuous Hahn families.
This paper addresses a general method of polynomial transformation of hypergeometric equations. Examples of some classical special equations of mathematical physics are generated. Heun's equation and exceptional Jacobi polynomials are also treated.
The Cholesky factorization of the moment matrix is considered for discrete orthogonal polynomials of hypergeometrical type. We derive the Laguerre-Freud equations when the first moments of the weights are given by the ${}_1F_2$, ${}_2F_2$ and ${}_3F_2$ generalized hypergeometrical functions.
A hypergeometric type equation satisfying certain conditions defines either a finite or an infinite system of orthogonal polynomials. We present in a unified and explicit way all these systems of orthogonal polynomials, the associated special functions and the corresponding raising/lowering operators. The considered equations are directly related to some Schrodinger type equations (Poschl-Teller, Scarf, Morse, etc), and the defined special functions are related to the corresponding bound-state eigenfunctions.
The three canonical families of the hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials (Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi) control the physical wavefunctions of the bound stationary states of a great deal of quantum systems. The algebraic $\mathfrak{L}_{q}$-norms of these polynomials describe many physical, chemical and information-theoretical properties of these systems, such as e.g. the kinetic and Weizsäcker energies, the position and momentum expectation values, the Rényi and Shannon entropies and the Cramér-Rao, the Fisher-Shannon and LMC measures of complexity. In this work we examine, partially review an…
We introduce hypergeometric functions related to projective Schur functions $Q_λ$ and describe their properties. Linear equations, integral representations and Pfaffian representations are obtained. These hypergeometric functions are vacuum expectations of free fermion fields, and thus these functions are tau functions of the so-called BKP hierarchy of integrable equations.
We describe a contraction theory for 2nd order superintegrable systems, showing that all such systems in 2 dimensions are limiting cases of a single system: the generic 3-parameter potential on the 2-sphere, S9 in our listing. Analogously, all of the quadratic symmetry algebras of these systems can be obtained by a sequence of contractions starting from S9. By contracting function space realizations of irreducible representations of the S9 algebra (which give the structure equations for Racah/Wilson polynomials) to the other superintegrable systems one obtains the full Askey scheme of orthogon…
The Askey-Wilson polynomials are orthogonal polynomials in $x = \cos θ$, which are given as a terminating $_4ϕ_3$ basic hypergeometric series. The non-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials are Laurent polynomials in $z=e^{iθ}$, which are given as a sum of two terminating $_4ϕ_3$'s. They satisfy a biorthogonality relation. In this paper new orthogonality relations for single $_4ϕ_3$'s which are Laurent polynomials in $z$ are given, which imply the non-symmetric Askey-Wilson biorthogonality. These results include discrete orthogonality relations. They can be considered as a classical analytic study…
We show that the integral \int e^{S(x_1,...,x_n)}dx_1...dx_n, for an arbitrary polynomial S, satisfies a generalized hypergeometric system of differential equations in the sense of I. M. Gelfand et al.
We establish a new connection between moments of $n \times n$ random matrices $X_n$ and hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. Specifically, we consider moments $\mathbb{E}\mathrm{Tr} X_n^{-s}$ as a function of the complex variable $s \in \mathbb{C}$, whose analytic structure we describe completely. We discover several remarkable features, including a reflection symmetry (or functional equation), zeros on a critical line in the complex plane, and orthogonality relations. An application of the theory resolves part of an integrality conjecture of Cunden et al. [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. J. S…
The Cholesky factorization of the moment matrix is applied to discrete orthogonal polynomials on the homogeneous lattice. In particular, semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials, which are built in terms of a discrete Pearson equation, are studied. The Laguerre-Freud structure semi-infinite matrix that models the shifts by $\pm 1$ in the independent variable of the set of orthogonal polynomials is introduced. In the semiclassical case it is proven that this Laguerre-Freud matrix is banded. From the well known fact that moments of the semiclassical weights are logarithmic derivatives of ge…
Starting from a recently found branching formula for the six-parameter family of symmetric Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials, we arrive by degeneration at corresponding branching rules for symmetric hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of Wilson, continuous Hahn, Jacobi, Laguerre, and Hermite type.
The main objective of this paper is to establish a new connection between the Hermitian rank-1 projector solutions of the Euclidean $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ sigma model in two dimensions and the particular hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials called Krawtchouk polynomials. We show that any such projector solutions of the $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ model, defined on the Riemann sphere and having a finite action, can be explicitly parametrised in terms of these polynomials. We apply these results to the analysis of surfaces associated with $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ models defined using the generalised Weierstrass f…
We study Heun's differential equation in the case that one of the singularities is apparent. In particular we conjecture a relationship with generalized hypergeometric differential equation and establish it in some cases. We apply our results to exceptional Jacobi polynomials.
We work on the SCE problems. We establish the expressions of three integrals' sequences, related to it, in terms of five families of polynomials. Relations between these integrals are demonstrated and we focus on one of the three problems : the determination of the family of polynomials noted $e_n (n \in \mathbb{N})$. We show taht these polynomials are hypergeometric. From this property, the NU method can be applied to this family. We have been able to determine the Rodrigues formula. These polynomials have properties that distinguish them from classical hypergeometric polynomials. We state an…
We show explicitly that all 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions are limiting cases of a single system: the generic 3-parameter potential on the 2-sphere, S9 in our listing. We extend the Wigner-Inönü method of Lie algebra contractions to contractions of quadratic algebras and show that all of the quadratic symmetry algebras of these systems are contractions of that of S9. Amazingly, all of the relevant contractions of these superintegrable systems on flat space and the sphere are uniquely induced by the well known Lie algebra contractions of e(2) and so(3). By contracting functio…
We consider some discrete $q$-analogues of the classical continuous orthogonal polynomial ensembles. Building on results due to Morozov, Popolitov and Shakirov, we find representations for the moments of the discrete $q$-Hermite and discrete $q$-Laguerre ensembles in terms of basic hypergeometric series. We find that when the number of particles is suitably randomised, the moments may be represented as basic hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials, with corresponding three-term recurrences in $k$, the order of the moments.
Starting from Rodrigues formula we present a general construction of raising and lowering operators for orthogonal polynomials of continuous and discrete variable on uniform lattice. In order to have these operators mutually adjoint we introduce orthonormal functions with respect to the scalar product of unit weight. Using the Infeld-Hull factorization method, we generate from the raising and lowering operators the second order self-adjoint differential/difference operator of hypergeometric type.
This is a review of ($q$-)hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials and their relation to representation theory of quantum groups, to matrix models, to integrable theory, and to knot theory. We discuss both continuous and discrete orthogonal polynomials and consider their various generalizations. The review also includes the orthogonal polynomials into a generic framework of ($q$-)hypergeometric functions and their integral representations. In particular, this gives rise to relations with conformal blocks of the Virasoro algebra.
Over the last decade it has become clear that discrete Painlevé equations appear in a wide range of important mathematical and physical problems. Thus, the question of recognizing a given non-autonomous recurrence as a discrete Painlevé equation and determining its type according to Sakai's classification scheme, understanding whether it is equivalent to some known (model) example, and especially finding an explicit change of coordinates transforming it to such an example, becomes one of the central ones. Fortunately, Sakai's geometric theory provides an almost algorithmic procedure for answer…
Consider an abstract operator $L$ which acts on monomials $x^n$ according to $L x^n= λ_n x^n + ν_n x^{n-2}$ for $λ_n$ and $ν_n$ some coefficients. Let $P_n(x)$ be eigenpolynomials of degree $n$ of $L$: $L P_n(x) = λ_n P_n(x)$. A classification of all the cases for which the polynomials $P_n(x)$ are orthogonal is provided. A general derivation of the algebras explaining the bispectrality of the polynomials is given. The resulting algebras prove to be central extensions of the Askey-Wilson algebra and its degenerate cases.
The recently found hypergeometric multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line by Lima and Loureiro are shown to be random walk polynomials. It is proven that the corresponding Jacobi matrix and its transpose, which are nonnegative matrices and describe higher recurrence relations, can be normalized to two stochastic matrices, dual to each other. Using the Christoffel-Darboux formula on the step-line and the Poincaré theory for non-homogeneous recurrence relations it is proven that both stochastic matrices are related by transposition in the large $n$ limit. These random walks are beyond b…
In this paper we introduce a basic representation for the confluent Cherednik algebras $\mathcal H_{\rm V}$, $\mathcal H_{\rm III}$, $\mathcal H_{\rm III}^{D_7}$ and $\mathcal H_{\rm III}^{D_8}$ defined in arXiv:1307.6140. To prove faithfulness of this basic representation, we introduce the non-symmetric versions of the continuous dual $q$-Hahn, Al-Salam-Chihara, continuous big $q$-Hermite and continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials.
We study Macdonald polynomials from a basic hypergeometric series point of view. In particular, we show that the Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials and its recently discovered inverse, a recursion formula for Macdonald polynomials, both represent multivariable extensions of the terminating very-well-poised 6-phi-5 summation formula. We derive several new related identities including multivariate extensions of Jackson's very-well-poised 8-phi-7 summation. Motivated by our basic hypergeometric analysis, we propose an extension of Macdonald polynomials to Macdonald symmetric functions indexe…
We define the generalized hypergeometric polynomial of degree N in terms of the generalized hypergeometric function that depends on p parameters a_1, ..., a_p and q parameters b_1, ..., b_q. The parameters are "generic", possibly complex, numbers. In this paper we obtain a set of N nonlinear algebraic equations satisfied by the N zeros z_n of this polynomial. We moreover manufacture an NxN matrix L in terms of the 1+p+q parameters N, a_j, b_k characterizing this polynomial, and of its N zeros z_n. We show that the matrix L features N eigenvalues that depend only on the q parameters b_k, implyi…
We define the generalized basic hypergeometric polynomial of degree $N \geq 1$ in terms of the generalized basic hypergeometric function, which depends on (arbitrary, generic, possibly complex) parameters $q \neq 1$, the $r \geq 0$ parameters $α_{j}$ and the $s \geq 0$ parameters $β_{k}$. In this paper we obtain a set of $N$ nonlinear algebraic equations satisfied by the $N$ zeros $ζ_{n}\equiv ζ_{n}\left( \underline{α},\underline{β};q;N\right) $ of this polynomial. We moreover identify an $\left( N\times N\right) $-matrix $\underline{M}\equiv \underline{M}\left( \underline{α},\underline{β};\un…
A hypergeometric type equation satisfying certain conditions defines either a finite or an infinite system of orthogonal polynomials. The associated special functions are eigenfunctions of some shape invariant operators. These operators can be analysed together and the mathematical formalism we use can be extended in order to define other shape invariant operators. All the considered shape invariant operators are directly related to Schrodinger type equations.
We introduce the notion of G-hypergeometric function, where G is a complex Lie group. In the case when G is a complex torus, this notion amounts to the notion of Gelfand's A-hypergeometric function. We show that the integral $\int e^{P(x_1,...,x_n)}dx_1...dx_n$, where P is a homogeneous polynomial, is a GL(n)-hypergeometric function of algebraic SL(n)-invariants of the polynomial.
The matrix valued analog of the Euler's hypergeometric differential equation was introduced by Tirao in \cite{T2}. This equation arises in the study of matrix valued spherical functions and in the theory of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials. The goal of this paper is to extend naturally the number of parameters of Tirao's equation in order to get a generalized matrix valued hypergeometric equation. We take advantage of the tools and strategies developed in \cite{T2} to identify the corresponding matrix hypergeometric functions ${}_nF_m$. We prove that, if n=m+1, this functions are analytic …
We generalize the known constructions of A-hypergeometric functions. In particular, we show that periods of middle dimension on affine or projective complex algebraic varieties are A-hypergeometric functions of coefficients of polynomial equations of these varieties.
We consider the KZ differential equations over $\mathbb C$ in the case, when the hypergeometric solutions are one-dimensional integrals. We also consider the same differential equations over a finite field $\mathbb F_p$. We study the space of polynomial solutions of these differential equations over $\mathbb F_p$, constructed in a previous work by V. Schechtman and the second author. Using Hasse-Witt matrices we identify the space of these polynomial solutions over $\mathbb F_p$ with the space dual to a certain subspace of regular differentials on an associated curve. We also relate these poly…
Contiguous hypergeometric relations for semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials are described as Christoffel and Geronimus transformations. Using the Christoffel-Geronimus-Uvarov formulas quasi-determinatal expressions for the shifted semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials are obtained.
