We study Macdonald polynomials from a basic hypergeometric series point of view. In particular, we show that the Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials and its recently discovered inverse, a recursion formula for Macdonald polynomials, both represent multivariable extensions of the terminating very-well-poised 6-phi-5 summation formula. We derive several new related identities including multivariate extensions of Jackson's very-well-poised 8-phi-7 summation. Motivated by our basic hypergeometric analysis, we propose an extension of Macdonald polynomials to Macdonald symmetric functions indexed by partitions with complex parts. These appear to possess nice properties.
The Knop-Sahi interpolation Macdonald polynomials are inhomogeneous and nonsymmetric generalisations of the well-known Macdonald polynomials. In this paper we apply the interpolation Macdonald polynomials to study a new type of basic hypergeometric series of type g_n. Our main results include a new q-binomial theorem, new q-Gauss sum, and several transformation formulae for g_n series.
We give a new theta-function identity, a special case of which is utilised to prove Kawanaka's Macdonald polynomial conjecture. The theta-function identity further yields a transformation formula for multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series which appears to be new even in the one-variable, basic case.
A one-parameter generalisation R_λ(X;b) of the symmetric Macdonald polynomials and interpolations Macdonald polynomials is studied from the point of view of branching rules. We establish a Pieri formula, evaluation symmetry, principal specialisation formula and q-difference equation for R_λ(X;b). We also prove a new multiple q-Gauss summation formula and several further results for sl_n basic hypergeometric series based on R_λ(X;b).
A new type of sl_3 basic hypergeometric series based on Macdonald polynomials is introduced. Besides a pair of Macdonald polynomials attached to two different sets of variables, a key-ingredient in the sl_3 basic hypergeometric series is a bisymmetric function related to Macdonald's commuting family of q-difference operators, to the sl_3 Selberg integrals of Tarasov and Varchenko, and to alternating sign matrices. Our main result for sl_3 series is a multivariable generalization of the celebrated q-binomial theorem. In the limit this q-binomial sum yields a new sl_3 Selberg integral for Jack p…
Using multiple q-integrals and a determinant evaluation, we establish a multivariable extension of Bailey's nonterminating 10-phi-9 transformation. From this result, we deduce new multivariable terminating 10-phi-9 transformations, 8-phi-7 summations and other identities. We also use similar methods to derive new multivariable 1-psi-1 summations. Some of our results are extended to the case of elliptic hypergeometric series.
A multivariable hypergeometric-type formula for raising operators of the Macdonald polynomials is conjectured. It is proved that this agrees with Jing and Jozefiak's expression for the two-row Macdonald polynomials, and also with Lassalle and Schlosser's formula for partitions with length three.
The very well--poised elliptic Macdonald functions W_lambda in n independent variables are defined and their properties are investigated. The W_lambda are generalized by introducing an extra parameter to the elliptic Jackson coefficients omega_lambda and their properties are studied. BC_n multivariable Jackson sums in terms of both W_lambda and omega_lambda functions are proved.
Starting from a recently found branching formula for the six-parameter family of symmetric Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials, we arrive by degeneration at corresponding branching rules for symmetric hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of Wilson, continuous Hahn, Jacobi, Laguerre, and Hermite type.
We study the perturbative power-series expansions of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a general tridiagonal (Jacobi) matrix of dimension d. The(small) expansion parameters are being the entries of the two diagonals of length d-1 sandwiching the principal diagonal, which gives the unperturbed spectrum. The solution is found explicitly in terms of multivariable (Horn-type) hypergeometric series of 3d-5 variables in the generic case, or 2d-3 variables for the eigenvalue growing from a corner matrix element. To derive the result, we first rewrite the spectral problem for a Jacobi matrix as an e…
This is the typewritten version of a handwritten manuscript which was completed by Ian G. Macdonald in 1987 or 1988. It is the sequel to the manuscript "Hypergeometric functions I." The two manuscripts are very informal working papers, never intended for formal publication. Nevertheless, copies of the manuscripts have circulated widely, giving rise to quite a few citations in the subsequent 25 years. Therefore it seems justified to make the manuscripts available for the whole mathematical community. The author kindly gave his permission that typewritten versions be posted on arXiv.
We give an overview of some of the main results from the theories of hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems. In particular, we list a number of summations, transformations and explicit evaluations for such multiple series and integrals. We concentrate on such results which do not directly extend to the elliptic level. This text is a provisional version of a chapter on hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems for volume 2 of the new Askey--Bateman project which deals with "Multivariable special f…
The n-point correlation functions introduced by Bloch and Okounkov have already found several geometric connections and algebraic generalizations. In this Note we formulate a q,t-deformation of this n-point function. The key operator used in our formulation arises from the theory of Macdonald polynomials and affords a vertex operator interpretation. We obtain closed formulas for the n-point functions when n =1,2 in terms of the basic hypergeometric functions. We further generalize the q,t-deformed n-point function to more general vertex operators.
We consider discretisations of the Macdonald--Mehta integrals from the theory of finite reflection groups. For the classical groups, $\mathrm{A}_{r-1}$, $\mathrm{B}_r$ and $\mathrm{D}_r$, we provide closed-form evaluations in those cases for which the Weyl denominators featuring in the summands have exponents $1$ and $2$. Our proofs for the exponent-$1$ cases rely on identities for classical group characters, while most of the formulas for the exponent-$2$ cases are derived from a transformation formula for elliptic hypergeometric series for the root system $\mathrm{BC}_r$. As a byproduct of o…
We prove Macdonald-type deformations of a number of well-known classical branching rules by employing identities for elliptic hypergeometric integrals and series. We also propose some conjectural branching rules and allied conjectures exhibiting a novel type of vanishing behaviour involving partitions with empty 2-cores.

We present explicit formulas for the Macdonald polynomials of types $C_n$ and $D_n$ in the one-row case. In view of the combinatorial structure, we call them "tableau formulas". For the construction of the tableau formulas, we apply some transformation formulas for the basic hypergeometric series involving very well-poised balanced ${}_{12}W_{11}$ series. We remark that the correlation functions of the deformed $\mathcal{W}$ algebra generators automatically give rise to the tableau formulas when we principally specialize the coordinate variables.

Parametric families in the centre ${\bf Z}({\bf C}[S_n])$ of the group algebra of the symmetric group are obtained by identifying the indeterminates in the generating function for Macdonald polynomials as commuting Jucys-Murphy elements. Their eigenvalues provide coefficients in the double Schur function expansion of 2D Toda $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type. Expressing these in the basis of products of power sum symmetric functions, the coefficients may be interpreted geometrically as parametric families of quantum Hurwitz numbers, enumerating weighted branched coverings of the Riemann sph…
We present a fourfold series expansion representing the Askey-Wilson polynomials. To obtain the result, a sequential use is made of several summation and transformation formulas for the basic hypergeometric series, including the Verma's q-extension of the Field and Wimp expansion, Andrews' terminating q-analogue of Watson's 3F2 sum, Singh's quadratic transformation. As an application, we present an explicit formula for the Koornwinder polynomial of type BCn (n in Z_>0) with one row diagram. When the parameters are specialized, we recover Lassalle's formula for Macdonald polynomials of type Bn,…
The discrete tori are graph analogues of the real tori, which are defined by the Cayley graphs of a finite product of finite cyclic groups. In this paper, using the theory of the heat kernel on the discrete tori established by Chinta, Jorgenson and Karlsson, we derive an explicit prime geodesic theorem for the discrete tori, which is not an asymptotic formula. To describe the formula, we need generalizations of the classical Jacobi polynomials, which are defined by the Lauricella multivariable hypergeometric function of type C.
In [Electron. J. Combin. 10 (2003), #R10], the author presented a new basic hypergeometric matrix inverse with applications to bilateral basic hypergeometric series. This matrix inversion result was directly extracted from an instance of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation theorem, and involves two infinite matrices which are not lower-triangular. The present paper features three different multivariable generalizations of the above result. These are extracted from Gustafson's A_r and C_r extensions and of the author's recent A_r extension of Bailey's 6-psi-6 summation formula. By combi…
A multidimensional generalization of Bailey's very-well-poised bilateral basic hypergeometric ${}_6ψ_6$ summation formula and its Dougall type ${}_5H_5$ hypergeometric degeneration for $q\to 1$ is studied. The multiple Bailey sum amounts to an extension corresponding to the case of a nonreduced root system of certain summation identities associated to the reduced root systems that were recently conjectured by Aomoto and Ito and proved by Macdonald. By truncation, we obtain multidimensional analogues of the very-well-poised unilateral (basic) hypergeometric Rogers ${}_6ϕ_5$ and Dougall ${}_5F_4…
A series of conjectures is obtained as further investigation of the integral transformation I(alpha) introduced in the previous paper. A Macdonald-type difference operator D is introduced. It is conjectured that D and I(alpha) are commutative with each other. Studying the series for the eigenfunctions under termination conditions, it is observed that a deformed Weyl group action appears as a hidden symmetry. An infinite product formula for the eigenfunction is found for a spacial case of parameters. A one parameter family of hypergeometric-type series F(alpha) is introduced. The series F(alpha…
We describe a method, based on the theory of Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials, for proving bounded Littlewood identities. Our approach provides an alternative to Macdonald's partial fraction technique and results in the first examples of bounded Littlewood identities for Macdonald polynomials. These identities, which take the form of decomposition formulas for Macdonald polynomials of type $(R,S)$ in terms of ordinary Macdonald polynomials, are $q,t$-analogues of known branching formulas for characters of the symplectic, orthogonal and special orthogonal groups. In the classical limit, our me…
We survey the applications of an elementary identity used by Euler in one of his proofs of the Pentagonal Number Theorem. Using a suitably reformulated version of this identity that we call Euler's Telescoping Lemma, we give alternate proofs of all the key summation theorems for terminating Hypergeometric Series and Basic Hypergeometric Series, including the terminating Binomial Theorem, the Chu--Vandermonde sum, the Pfaff--Saalch\" utz sum, and their $q$-analogues. We also give a proof of Jackson's $q$-analog of Dougall's sum, the sum of a terminating, balanced, very-well-poised $_8ϕ_7$ sum. …
In this article, we derive some identities for multilateral basic hypergeometric series associated to the root system A_n. First, we apply Ismail's argument to an A_n q-binomial theorem of Milne and derive a new A_n generalization of Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation theorem. From this new A_n 1-psi-1 summation and from an A_n 1-psi-1 summation of Gustafson we deduce two lemmas for deriving simple A_n generalizations of bilateral basic hypergeometric series identities. These lemmas are closely related to the Macdonald identities for A_n. As samples for possible applications of these lemmas, we pro…
The purpose of the paper is two-fold: to introduce a multivariable creative telescoping method, and to apply it in a problem of Quantum Topology: namely the computation of the non-commutative $A$-polynomial of twist knots. Our multivariable creative telescoping method allows us to compute linear recursions for sums of the form $J(n)=\sum_k c(n,k) \hatJ (k)$ given a recursion relation for $(\hatJ(n))$ a the hypergeometric kernel $c(n,k)$. As an application of our method, we explicitly compute the non-commutative $A$-polynomial for twist knots with -8 and 11 crossings. The non-commutative $A$-po…
