In a secluded dark sector which is coupled to the Standard Model via a Higgs portal interaction we arrange for the existence of 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopoles and study their implications for cosmology. We point out that a dark sector which can accommodate stable monopoles will also contain massless dark photons gamma' as well as charged massive vector bosons W'. The dark matter in this scenario will be a combination of magnetically and electrically charged species under the unbroken U(1) subgroup of the dark sector. We estimate the cosmological production rate of monopoles and the rate of monopole-anti-monopole annihilation and conclude that monopoles with masses of few hundred TeV or greater, can produce sizeable contributions to the observed dark matter relic density. We scan over the parameter space and compute the relic density for monopoles and vector bosons. Turning to the dark photon radiation, we compute their contribution to the measured density of relativistic particles Neff and also apply observational constraints from the Bullet cluster and other large scale galaxies on long-range interactions for the self-interacting dark matter components made out of monopoles and out of dark vector bosons. At scales relevant for dwarf galaxies we identify regions on the parameter space where self-interacting monopole and vector dark mater components can aid solving the core-cusp and the too-big-to-fail problems.
The thermal freeze-out mechanism for relic dark matter heavier than $O(10-100 $ TeV$)$ requires cross-sections that violate perturbative unitarity. Yet the existence of dark matter heavier than these scales is certainly plausible from a particle physics perspective, pointing to the need for a non-thermal cosmological history for such theories. Topological dark matter is a well-motivated scenario of this kind. Here the hidden-sector dark matter can be produced in abundance through the Kibble-Zurek mechanism describing the non-equilibrium dynamics of defects produced in a second order phase tran…
If the dark sector contains 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles and a small enough dark gauge coupling, dark monopoles could be a macroscopic dark matter candidate. Its Higgs-portal coupling to the Standard Model can modify the electroweak vacuum in the monopole interior. In the most striking cases, dark monopoles could even contain electroweak-symmetric cores and generate multi-hit signals at large-volume detectors. If they are produced via parametric resonance in the early Universe, monopoles with radii up to one micron and masses up to ten kilotonnes could account for all of dark matter.
We study the possibility of monopoles serving as dark matter when they are produced during the first-order phase transition in the dark sector. Our study shows that dark monopoles can contribute only a small piece of dark matter relic density within parameter spaces where strong gravitational waves can be probed by ET and CE, and the monopoles can contribute a sizable component of the observed dark matter relic density for fast phase transitions with short duration.
Hidden monopole is a plausible dark matter candidate due to its stability, but its direct experimental search is extremely difficult due to feeble interactions with the standard model particles in the minimal form. Then, we introduce an axion, $a$, connecting the hidden monopole and the standard model particles and examine the current limits and future prospects of direct dark matter searches and beam-dump experiments. We find two parameter regions around $m_a = {\cal O}(10)$ MeV, $f_a = {\cal O}(10^{5})$ GeV and $m_a = {\cal O}(100)$ MeV, $f_a = {\cal O}(10^{4})$ GeV where monopole dark matte…

We analyze the asymptotic stability of the $SU(n)$ Dark Monopole solutions and we show that there are unstable modes associated with them. We obtain the explicit form of the unstable perturbations and the associated negative-squared eigenfrequencies.
Dark sectors with Abelian gauge symmetries can interact with ordinary matter via kinetic mixing. In such scenarios, magnetic monopoles of a broken dark $U(1)$ will appear in our sector as confined milli-magnetically charged objects under ordinary electromagnetism. Halo ellipticity constraints are shown to significantly bound the strength of dark magnetic Coulomb monopole interactions. The bound monopole ground state, which in vacuum is stable and has no magnetic charge or moment, is shown to become quantum mechanically unstable in the presence of an external, ordinary magnetic field. If these …
We propose a model of dark matter: galaxy-sized 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopoles in a new, extraordinarily weakly coupled SU(2) gauge sector with an adjoint Higgs field and two flavors of fundamental fermions. We fit the parameters by asserting that the dark matter halos of the lightest dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies consist of a single charge Q=1 monopole. Lensing and wide binary bounds are then easily satisfied and the monopoles form in time to help with CMB fluctuations. In this model dSph and low surface brightness (LSB) halos automatically have (1) A minimum mass - Dirac quantizatio…
We study quantum systems of interacting electrons, magnetic monopoles, and electromagnetic field. We formulate a convenient field theory, in which the electron-photon, monopole-photon, and electron-monopole interactions take simple forms.
We show that the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole model in the hidden sector with Higgs portal interaction makes a viable dark matter model, where monopole and massive vector dark matter (VDM) are stable due to topological conservation and the unbroken subgroup $U(1)_X$. We show that, even though observed CMB data requires the dark gauge coupling to be quite small, a right amount of VDM thermal relic can be obtained via $s$-channel resonant annihilation for the mass of VDM close to or smaller than the half of SM higgs mass, thanks to Higgs portal interaction. Monopole relic density turns out to be s…
We suggest that dark matter may be partially constituted by a dilute 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles gas. We reach this conclusion by using the Georgi-Glashow model coupled to a dual kinetic mixing term $ F{\tilde {\cal G}}$ where $F$ is the electromagnetic field and ${\cal G}$ the 't Hooft tensor. We show that these monopoles carry both (Maxwell) electric and (Georgi-Glashow) magnetic charges and the electric charge quantization condition is modified in terms of a dimensionless real parameter. This parameter could be determined from milli-charged particle experiments.

We propose a scenario where the spontaneous breakdown of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry leads to monopole production. Both the axion and the monopole contribute to dark matter, and the Witten effect on the axion mass is a built-in feature. In the KSVZ-type axion model, seemingly different vacua are actually connected by the hidden gauge symmetry, which makes the axionic string unstable and separate into two Alice strings. The Alice string is attached to a single domain wall due to the QCD instanton effect, solving the domain-wall problem. This is in the same spirit of the Lazarides-Shafi mechanism,…
We consider a Yang-Mills-Higgs theory with gauge group $G=SU(n)$ broken to $G_{v} = [SU(p)\times SU(n-p)\times U(1)]/Z$ by a Higgs field in the adjoint representation. We obtain monopole solutions whose magnetic field is not in the Cartan Subalgebra. Since their magnetic field vanishes in the direction of the generator of the electromagnetic group $U(1)_{em}$, we call them Dark Monopoles. These Dark Monopoles must exist in some Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) without the need to introduce a dark sector. We analyze the particular case of $SU(5)$ GUT, where we obtain that their mass is $M = 4πv \w…
We analyze the role played by the gauge invariance for the existence of Dirac monopole. To this end, we consider the electrodynamics with massive photon and ask if the magnetic charge can be introduced there. We show that the derivation of the Dirac quantization condition based on the angular momentum algebra cannot be generalized to the case of massive electrodynamics. Possible implications of this result are briefly discussed.
We explore kinetic mixing between two Abelian gauge theories that have both electric and magnetic charges. When one of the photons becomes massive, novel effects arise in the low-energy effective theory, including the failure of Dirac charge quantization as particles from one sector obtain parametrically small couplings to the photon of the other. We maintain a manifest SL(2,Z) duality throughout our analysis, which is the diagonal subgroup of the dualities of the two un-mixed gauge theories.
We develop a scenario whereby monopoles in a hidden sector yield a decaying dark matter candidate of interest for the PAMELA and FERMI $e^\pm$ excesses. The monopoles are not completely hidden due to a very small kinetic mixing and a hidden photon mass. The latter also causes the monopoles and anti-monopoles to be connected by strings. The resulting long-lived objects eventually decay to hidden photons which tend to escape galactic cores before decaying. The mass scales are those of the hidden photon ($\approx 500$ MeV), the monopole ($\approx 3$ TeV) and the mixing scale (close to the Planck …

In a recent study on monopole production [Eur. Phys. J. C (2018) 78: 966], Baines et al added the potential of a magnetic dipole to the Wu-Yang potentials for the Dirac monopole and claimed that this modified Wu-Yang configuration does not affect the Dirac quantisation condition. In this comment, we argue that their claim is incorrect by showing that their modified Wu-Yang configuration leads to an infinite number of quantisation conditions. In their study, they also incorrectly identified the magnetic field of the monopole with the magnetic field of the Dirac string and its attached magnetic …
We discuss how the topological defects in the dark sector affect the Standard Model sector when the dark photon has a kinetic mixing with the QED photon. In particular, we consider the dark photon appearing in the successive gauge symmetry breaking, $\mathrm{SU}(2)\to \mathrm{U}(1) \to \mathbb{Z}_2$, where the remaining $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is the center of $\mathrm{SU(2)}$. In this model, the monopole is trapped into the cosmic strings and forms the so-called bead solution. As we will discuss, the dark cosmic string induces the QED magnetic flux inside the dark string through the kinetic mixing. Th…
Charge conservation in the theory of elementary particle physics is one of the best-established principles in physics. As such, if there are magnetic monopoles in the universe, magnetic charge will most likely be a conserved quantity like electric charges. If neutrinos are magnetic monopoles, as physicists have reported the possibility, the Earth should show signs of having magnetic monopole charge on a macroscopic scale since neutrons must also have magnetic monopole charge if general charge conservation principle is valid. To test this hypothesis, experiments were performed to detect the col…
We calculate the lowest order cross--section for Dirac magnetic monopole production from photon fusion in p p-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, p p collisions at sqrt{s}=14 TeV, and we compare photon fusion with Drell--Yan (DY) production. We find the total photon fusion cross--section is comparable with DY at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV and dominates DY by a factor ~50 at sqrt{s}=14 TeV. We conclude that both the photon fusion and DY processes allow for a monopole mass limit m>370 GeV based upon the null results of the recent monopole search at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). We also conclude…
Recently, there have been proposals that the classic Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian together with duality could be employed to set limits on magnetic monopoles having masses less than 1 TeV. The D0 collaboration at Fermilab has used such a proposal to set mass limits based on the nonobservation of pairs of photons each with high transverse momentum. In this note, we critique the underlying theory, by showing that at the quoted limits the cross section violates unitarity and is unstable with respect to radiative corrections. It is proposed that the correct coupling of magnetic monopoles to photons…
The existence of magnetic monopoles, also predicted in some GUT theories, would symmetrise Maxwell equations and explain the charge quantisation. Searches for them are being performed in cosmic telescopes as well as in collider experiments, such as MoEDAL and ATLAS. In this report, we focus on the, least explored, photon-fusion mechanism, yet Drell-Yan results are discussed, too. Cross sections for monopoles of spin 0, 1/2 and 1 for an effective monopole-velocity-dependent magnetic charge are presented. For spin-1/2 and spin-1 monopoles, a magnetic-moment term is included, which is treated as …
A cosmological model in which the primordial perturbations are provided by global monopoles and in which the dark matter is cold has several interesting features. The model is normalized by choosing its single parameter within the bounds obtained from gravitational wave constraints and by demanding coherent velocity f1ows of about 600km/sec on scales of $50 h^{-1} Mpc$. Using this normalization, the model predicts the existence of dominant structures with mass $2\times 10^{16} M_\odot$ on a scale $35 h^{-1}Mpc$ i.e. larger than the horizon at $t_{eq}$. The magnitude of the predicted mass funct…
We propose to interpret the dark universe (dark matter and dark energy) of the current cosmological standard model as emerging together with ordinary matter, from the quantum vacuum, which de Broglie called the "universal substratum". It will be shown that this interpretation may lead to a reasonable agreement between the current understanding of the quantum vacuum in quantum field theory and current evidences for the existence of dark energy and dark matter, and that dark matter can be interpreted as emerging from the QCD vacuum, as a Bose-Einstein gluon condensate, with an energy density rel…
We study the lattice gauge boson propagator of 3D compact QED in Landau gauge at zero and non-zero temperature. Non-perturbative effects are reflected by the generation of a mass $m$, by an anomalous dimension $α$ and by the photon wave function renormalisation $Z$. These effects can be attributed to monopoles: they are absent in the propagator of the regular part of the gauge field. The rôle of Gribov copies is carefully investigated.
Using a toy model for the interactions between a defect-forming field and the photon field where the photon becomes massive in the defect core (motivated by recent work on defects in the 2HDM), we study the impact on photon propagation in the background of the defect. We find that, when the photon frequency (in natural units) is much lower than the symmetry breaking scale, domain walls reflect most of an incoming photon signal leading to potential interesting astrophysical signals. We also adapt the calculations for vortices and monopoles. We find that the case of strings is very similar to th…
We consider cosmic loop production by long string interactions in cosmological models with compact extra dimensions. In the case that the compact manifold is not simply connected, we focus on the possibility of loops wrapping around non-trivial cycles and becoming topologically trapped. Such loops, denoted cycloops, behave like matter in the radiation era, posing a potential monopole problem. We calculate the number distribution and the energy density of these objects as functions of cosmic time and use them to study cosmological constraints imposed on simple brane inflation models. For typica…
We investigate in detail the problem of constructing magnetic monopole solutions within the finite-range electrodynamics (i.e., electrodynamics with non-zero photon mass, which is the simplest extension of the standard theory; it is fully compatible with the experiment). We first analyze the classical electrodynamics with the additional terms describing the photon mass and the magnetic charge; then we look for a solution analogous to the Dirac monopole solution. Next, we plug the found solution into the Schrödinger equation describing the interaction between the the magnetic charge and the ele…
If a heavy Dirac monopole exists, the light to light scattering below the monopole production threshold is enhanced due to the strong coupling of monopoles to photons. This effect could be observable in the collision of virtual photons at proton colliders. At the Tevatron it will be seen as pair production of photons with energies 200--400 GeV and roughly compensated transverse momenta 100--400 GeV/c. This effect could be seen at monopole masses about 1--2.5 TeV at the upgraded Tevatron and 7.4--19 TeV at LHC depending on monopole spin.
We present a solution to the cosmological problem encountered in (supersymmetric) grand unified theories due to copious monopole production at the end of hybrid inflation. By employing thermal inflation ``driven'' by the U(1) axion symmetry, the superheavy monopole flux can be naturally suppressed to values that should be accessible to dedicated large scale experiments. The U(1) axion symmetry also helps generate the right magnitude for the mu term of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. An important by-product is the predicted existence of stable or very long-living fermions possessing …
If a heavy Dirac monopole exists, the light-to-light scattering below the monopole production threshold is enhanced due to strong coupling of monopoles to photons. At the next Linear Collider with electron beam energy 250 GeV this photon pair production could be observable at monopole masses less than 2.5-6.4 TeV in the $e^+e^-$ mode or 3.7-10 TeV in the $γγ$ mode, depending on the monopole spin. At the upgraded Tevatron such an effect is expected to be visible at monopole masses below 1-2.5 TeV. The strong dependence on the initial photon polarizations allows to find the monopole spin in expe…
We investigate the gauge boson propagator in three dimensional compact Abelian gauge model in the Landau gauge at finite temperature. The presence of the monopole plasma in the confinement phase leads to appearance of an anomalous dimension in the momentum dependence of the propagator. The anomalous dimension as well as an appropriate ratio of photon wave function renormalization constants with and without monopoles are observed to be order parameters for the deconfinement phase transition. We discuss the relation between our results and the confining properties of the gluon propagator in non-…
In this letter, we show that superluminal neutrinos announced by OPERA could be explained by the existence of a monopole, which is left behind after the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) phase transition of some scalar fields in the universe. We assume the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole couples to the neutrinos but not photon fields. The monopole introduces a different effective metric to the neutrinos from the one experienced by photons. We find that the superluminal propagation only exists in a very short distance from the monopole, about $10^3$ cm in OPERA. No matter how far they travel, neut…
We consider the radiation of photons from quarks scattering on color-magnetic monopoles in the Quark-Gluon Plasma. We consider a temperature regime $T\gsim2T_c$, where monopoles can be considered as static, rare objects embedded into matter consisting mostly of the usual "electric" quasiparticles, quarks and gluons. The calculation is performed in the classical, non-relativistic approximation and results are compared to photon emission from Coulomb scattering of quarks, known to provide a significant contribution to the photon emission rates from QGP. The present study is a first step towards …
Monopole and photon contributions to abelian Wilson loops are calculated using Monte-Carlo simulations of SU(2) QCD in the maximally abelian gauge. The string tension is well reproduced only by monopole contributions, whereas photons alone are responsible for the Coulomb coefficient of the abelian static potential.
We show that due to the large coupling constant of the monopole-photon interaction the annihilation of monopole-antimonopole and monopolium into many photons must be considered experimentally. For monopole-antimonopole annihilation and lightly bound monopolium, even in the less favorable scenario, multi-photon events (four and more photons in the final state) are dominant, while for strongly bound monopolium, although two photon events are important, four and six photon events are also sizable.
Magnetic monopoles have been a subject of interest since Dirac established the relation between the existence of monopoles and charge quantization. The intense experimental search carried thus far has not met with success. We study the observability of monopoles at the Large Hadron collider in the photon-photon channel and show that LHC is an ideal machine to discover monopoles with masses below 1 TeV at present running energies and with less than 1 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity.
In this work we consider point-like monopole production via photon-fusion and Drell-Yan processes in the framework of an effective U(1) gauge field theory obtained from conventional models describing the interaction of spin 0, 1/2, 1 magnetically-charged fields with ordinary photons, upon electric-magnetic dualisation. We present arguments based on such dualities which support the conjecture of an effective monopole-velocity-dependent magnetic charge. For the cases of spin-1/2 and spin-1 monopoles, we also include a magnetic-moment term kappa, which is treated as a new phenomenological paramet…
Magnetic monopoles have attracted the attention of physicists since the founding of the electromagnetic theory. Their search has been a constant endeavor which was intensified when Dirac established the relation between the existence of monopoles and charge quantization. However, these searches have been unsuccessful. We have recently proposed that monopolium, a monopole-antimonopole bound state, so strongly bound that it has a relatively small mass, could be easier to find and become an indirect but clear signature for the existence of magnetic monopoles. In here we extend our previous analys…
A global monopole (or other topological defect) formed during a recent phase transition with core size comparable to the present Hubble scale, could induce the observed accelerating expansion of the universe. In such a model, topological considerations trap the scalar field close to a local maximum of its potential in a cosmologically large region of space. We perform detailed numerical simulations of such an inhomogeneous dark energy system (topological quintessence) minimally coupled to gravity, in a flat background of initially homogeneous matter. We find that when the energy density of the…
We explore how to generate hierarchies in the splittings between superpartners. Some of the consequences are the existence of invisible components of dark matter, new inflaton candidates, invisible monopoles and a number of invisible particles that might dominate during various eras, in particular between BBN and recombination and decay subsequently.
The confining and topological properties of the compact Abelian Higgs model with doubly-charged Higgs field in three space-time dimensions are studied. We consider the London limit of the model. We show that the monopoles are forming chain-like structures (kept together by ANO vortices) the presence of which is essential for getting simultaneously permanent confinement of singly-charged particles and breaking of the string spanned between doubly-charged particles. In the confinement phase the chains are forming percolating clusters while in the deconfinement (Higgs) phase the chains are of fin…
Kibble mechanism drastically underestimates the production of topological defects, as confirmed recently in atomic and condensed matter systems. If non-thermally produced, they can be cosmological dark matter of mass 1-10 PeV. If thermalized, skyrmion of mass 1-10 TeV is also a viable dark matter candidate, whose decay may explain $e^\pm$ spectra in cosmic rays recently measured by PAMELA, FERMI, and HESS. Models that produce magnetic monopoles below the inflation scale, such as Pati-Salam unification, are excluded.
We (try to) pedagogically explain how monopoles arise in QCD, why maximal Abelian(MA) gauge is ``special'' for monopole study, the Abelian projection in MA gauge, its resultant degrees of freedom(photons, monopoles and charged matter fields), and the QCD-equivalent action in terms of these degrees of freedom. Then we turn to more recent developments in the subject: Abelian dominance, large $N$ behavior of Abelian projected QCD, mass of the charged matter fields, notion of an effective photon-monopole action obtained by integrating out the charged matter fields, and problems encountered in the …
Monopole and photon contributions to Wilson loops are calculated using Monte-Carlo simulations of SU(2) QCD in the maximally abelian gauge. The string tensions of SU(2) QCD are well reproduced by extended monopole contributions alone.
U(1) gauge fields are decomposed into a monopole and photon part across the phase transition from the confinement to the Coulomb phase. We analyze the leading Lyapunov exponents of such gauge field configurations on the lattice which are initialized by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We observe a strong relation between the sizes of the monopole density and the Lyapunov exponent. Evidence is found that monopole fields stay chaotic in the continuum whereas the photon fields are regular.
