We use two cosmological simulations of structure formation in the LambdaCDM scenario to study the evolutionary histories of dark-matter haloes and to characterize the Lagrangian regions from which they form. We focus on haloes identified at redshift z_id=0 and show that the classic ellipsoidal collapse model systematically overestimates their collapse times. If one imposes that halo collapse takes place at z_id, this model requires starting from a significantly lower linear density contrast than what is measured in the simulations at the locations of halo formation. We attempt to explain this discrepancy by testing two key assumptions of the model. First, we show that the tides felt by collapsing haloes due to the surrounding large-scale structure evolve non-linearly. Although this effect becomes increasingly important for low-mass haloes, accounting for it in the ellipsoidal collapse model only marginally improves the agreement with N-body simulations. Second, we track the time evolution of the physical volume occupied by forming haloes and show that, after turnaround, it generally stabilizes at a well-defined redshift, z_c>z_id, contrary to the basic assumption of extended Press-Schechter theory based on excursion sets. We discuss the implications of this result for understanding the origin of the mass-dependence and scatter in the linear threshold for halo formation. Finally, we show that, when tuned for collapse at z_c, a modified version of the ellipsoidal collapse model that also accounts for the triaxial nature of protohaloes predicts their linear density contrast in an unbiased way.
We present distributions of orbital parameters of infalling satellites of $Λ$CDM haloes in the mass range $10^{12}-10^{14}$M$_\odot$, which represent the initial conditions for the subsequent evolution of substructures within the host halo. We use merger trees constructed in a high resolution cosmological N-body simulation to trace satellite haloes, and identify the time of infall. We find signficant trends in the distribution of orbital parameters with both the host halo mass and the ratio of satellite-to-host halo masses. For all host halo masses, satellites whose infall mass is a larger fra…
We investigate the properties of dark matter haloes and subhaloes in an $f(R)$ gravity model with $|f_{R0}|=10^{-6}$, using a very high-resolution N-body simulation. The model is a borderline between being cosmologically interesting and yet still consistent with current data. We find that the halo mass function in this model has a maximum 20% enhancement compared with the $Λ$CDM predictions between $z=1$ and $z=0$. Because of the chameleon mechanism which screens the deviation from standard gravity in dense environments, haloes more massive than $10^{13}h^{-1}M_\odot$ in this $f(R)$ model have…
We investigate the transverse modes of the gravitational and velocity fields in $Λ$CDM, based on a high-resolution simulation performed using the adaptive-mesh refinement general-relativistic $N$-body code GRAMSES. We study the generation of vorticity in the dark matter velocity field at low redshift, providing fits to the shape and evolution of its power spectrum over a range of scales. By analysing the gravitomagnetic vector potential, which is absent in Newtonian simulations, in dark matter haloes with masses ranging from $\sim10^{12.5}~h^{-1}{M}_{\odot}$ to $\sim10^{15}~h^{-1}{M}_{\odot}$,…
The smallest dark matter haloes are the first objects to form in the hierarchical structure formation of cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology and are expected to be the densest and most fundamental building blocks of CDM structures in our universe. Nevertheless, the physical characteristics of these haloes have stayed illusive, as they remain well beyond the current resolution of N-body simulations (at redshift zero). However, they dominate the predictions (and uncertainty) in expected dark matter annihilation signal, amongst other astrophysical observables. Using the conservation of total energy …
In the excursion set approach to structure formation initially spherical regions of the linear density field collapse to form haloes of mass $M$ at redshift $z_{\rm id}$ if their linearly extrapolated density contrast, averaged on that scale, exceeds some critical threshold, $δ_{\rm c}(z_{\rm id})$. The value of $δ_{\rm c}(z_{\rm id})$ is often calculated from the spherical or ellipsoidal collapse model, which provide well-defined predictions given auxiliary properties of the tidal field at a given location. We use two cosmological simulations of structure growth in a $Λ$ cold dark matter scen…
We study cluster mass dark matter haloes, their progenitors and surroundings in an coupled Dark Matter-Dark Energy model and compare it to quintessence and $Λ$CDM models with adiabatic zoom simulations. When comparing cosmologies with different expansions histories, growth functions & power spectra, care must be taken to identify unambiguous signatures of alternative cosmologies. Shared cosmological parameters, such as $σ_8$, need not be the same for optimal fits to observational data. We choose to set our parameters to $Λ$CDM $z=0$ values. We find that in coupled models, where DM decays into …
Warm Dark Matter (WDM) models offer an attractive alternative to the current Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmological model. We present a novel method to differentiate between WDM and CDM cosmologies, namely using weak lensing; this provides a unique probe as it is sensitive to all the "matter in the beam", not just dark matter haloes and the galaxies that reside in them, but also the diffuse material between haloes. We compare the weak lensing maps of CDM clusters to those in a WDM model corresponding to a thermally produced $0.5$~keV dark matter particle. Our analysis clearly shows that the weak …
We present the evolution of the structure of relaxed cold dark matter haloes in the cosmology from the Planck satellite. Our simulations cover 5 decades in halo mass, from dwarf galaxies to galaxy clusters. Due to the increased matter density and power spectrum normalization the concentration mass relation in the Planck cosmology has a 20 percent higher normalization at redshift z=0 compared to WMAP cosmology. We confirm that CDM haloes are better described by the Einasto profile; for example, at scales near galaxy half-light radii CDM haloes have significantly steeper density profiles than im…
We investigate how long-range scalar interactions affect the properties of dark matter haloes. For doing so we employ the ReBEL model which implements an additional interaction between dark matter particles. On the phenomenological level this is equivalent to a modification of gravity. We analyse the differences between five ReBEL models and $Λ$CDM using a series of high resolution cosmological simulations. Emphasis is placed on investigating how halo properties change in the presence of a fifth force. We report that the density profile of ReBEL haloes is well described by the NFW profile but …
We present a theoretical analysis of some unexplored aspects of relaxed Bose-Einstein condensate dark matter (BECDM) haloes. This type of ultralight bosonic scalar field dark matter is a viable alternative to the standard cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm, as it makes the same large-scale predictions as CDM and potentially overcomes CDM's small-scale problems via a galaxy-scale de Broglie wavelength. We simulate BECDM halo formation through mergers, evolved under the Schrödinger-Poisson equations. The formed haloes consist of a soliton core supported against gravitational collapse by the quantum…
The concordance $Λ$CDM cosmology predicts tens of satellite galaxies distributed in the inner region ($<40\ \lkpc$) of the Milky Way (MW), yet at most $12$ were discovered at present day, including 3 discovered very recently by Dark Energy Survey (DES) and 5 from other surveys (e.g. PanSTARRS, MagLiteS). We use $5$ ultra-high resolution simulations of MW sized dark matter haloes from the $\aqua$ project, combined with $\galf$ semi-analytical galaxy formation model, to investigate properties of the model satellite galaxy population inside $40\ \lkpc$ of MW sized haloes. On average, in each halo…
We study the halo mass function and inner halo structure at high redshifts ($z\geq5$) for a suite of simulations within the structure formation ETHOS framework. Scenarios such as cold dark matter (CDM), thermal warm dark matter (WDM), and dark acoustic oscillations (DAO) of various strengths are contained in ETHOS with just two parameters $h_{\rm peak}$ and $k_{\rm peak}$, the amplitude and scale of the first DAO peak. The Extended Press-Schechter (EPS) formalism with a smooth-$k$ filter is able to predict the cut-off in the halo mass function created by the suppression of small scale power in…
We perform dark-matter-only simulations of 28 relaxed massive cluster-sized haloes for Cold Dark Matter (CDM) and Self-Interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) models, to study structural differences between the models at large radii, where the impact of baryonic physics is expected to be very limited. We find that the distributions for the radial profiles of the density, ellipsoidal axis ratios, and velocity anisotropies ($β$) of the haloes differ considerably between the models (at the $\sim1σ$ level), even at $\gtrsim10\%$ of the virial radius, if the self-scattering cross section is $σ/m_χ=1$ cm$^2$…
The defining characteristic of the cold dark matter (CDM) hypothesis is the presence of a very large number of low-mass haloes, too small to have made a visible galaxy. Other hypotheses for the nature of the dark matter, such as warm dark matter (WDM), predict a much smaller number of such low-mass haloes. Strong lensing systems offer the possibility of detecting small-mass haloes through the distortions they induce in the lensed image. Here we show that the main contribution to the image distortions comes from haloes along the line of sight rather than subhaloes in the lens as has normally be…
We study clusters in Warm Dark Matter (WDM) models of a thermally produced dark matter particle $0.5$ keV in mass. We show that, despite clusters in WDM cosmologies having similar density profiles as their Cold Dark Matter (CDM) counterparts, the internal properties, such as the amount of substructure, shows marked differences. This result is surprising as clusters are at mass scales that are {\em a thousand times greater} than that at which structure formation is suppressed. WDM clusters gain significantly more mass via smooth accretion and contain fewer substructures than their CDM brethren.…
The massive substructures found in Abell 2744 by Jauzac et al. (2016) present a challenge to the cold dark matter paradigm due to their number and proximity to the cluster centre. We use one of the biggest N-body simulations, the Millennium XXL, to investigate the substructure in a large sample of massive dark matter haloes. A range of effects which influence the comparison with the observations is considered, extending the preliminary evaluation carried out by Jauzac et al. (2016). There are many tens of haloes in the simulation with a total mass comparable with or larger than that of Abell 2…
We present six simulations of galactic stellar haloes formed by the tidal disruption of accreted dwarf galaxies in a fully cosmological setting. Our model is based on the Aquarius project, a suite of high resolution N-body simulations of individual dark matter haloes. We tag subsets of particles in these simulations with stellar populations predicted by the Galform semi-analytic model. Our method self-consistently tracks the dynamical evolution and disruption of satellites from high redshift. The luminosity function and structural properties of surviving satellites, which agree well with obser…
A defining prediction of the cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological model is the existence of a very large population of low mass haloes, down to planet-size masses. However, their fate as they are accreted onto haloes many orders of magnitude more massive remains fundamentally uncertain. A number of numerical explorations have found subhaloes to be very resilient to tides, but resolution limits make it difficult to explore tidal evolution at arbitrarily low masses. What are the structural properties of heavily stripped subhaloes? Do tidal effects destroy low-mass CDM subhaloes? Here we focus on …
Self-Interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) is a collisional form of cold dark matter (CDM), originally proposed to solve problems that arose when the collisionless CDM theory of structure formation was compared with observations of galaxies on small scales. The quantitative impact of the proposed elastic collisions on structure formation has been estimated previously by Monte Carlo N-body simulations and by a conducting fluid model, with apparently diverging results. To improve this situation, we make direct comparisons between new Monte Carlo N-body simulations and solutions of the conducting fluid …
Scalar Field Dark Matter (SFDM) comprised of ultralight bosons has attracted great interest as an alternative to standard, collisionless Cold Dark Matter (CDM) because of its novel structure-formation dynamics, described by the coupled Schrödinger-Poisson equations. In the free-field ("fuzzy") limit of SFDM (FDM), structure is inhibited below the de Broglie wavelength, but resembles CDM on larger scales. Virialized haloes have "solitonic" cores of radius $\simλ_\text{deB}$, surrounded by CDM-like envelopes. When a strong enough repulsive self-interaction (SI) is also present, structure can be …
We study the evolving environment dependence of mass accretion by dark haloes in simulations of cold and warm dark matter (CDM and WDM) cosmologies. The latter allows us to probe the nature of halo growth at scales below the WDM half-mode mass, which form an extreme regime of nonlinear collisionless dynamics and offer an excellent test-bed for ideas relating to hierarchical growth. As environmental proxies, we use the local halo-centric matter density $δ$ and tidal anisotropy $α$, as well as large-scale halo bias $b_1$. Our analysis, while reproducing known trends for environment-dependent acc…
The characteristic prediction of the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model of cosmological structure formation is that the Universe should contain a wealth of small-scale structure -- low-mass dark matter haloes and subhaloes. However, galaxy formation is inefficient in their shallow potential wells and so we expect these low-mass haloes and subhaloes to be dark. Can we tell the difference between a Universe in which low-mass haloes are present but dark and one in which they never formed, thereby providing a robust test of the CDM model? We address this question using cosmological simulations to examin…
A cutoff in the linear matter power spectrum at dwarf galaxy scales has been shown to affect the abundance, formation mechanism and age of dwarf haloes and their galaxies at high and low redshift. We use hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation within the ETHOS framework in a benchmark model that has such a cutoff, and that has been shown to be an alternative to the cold dark matter (CDM) model that alleviates its dwarf-scale challenges. We show how galaxies in this model form differently to CDM on a halo-by-halo basis, at redshifts $z\ge6$. We show that ETHOS haloes at the half-mode mas…
In the last time the cold dark matter (CDM) model has suggested more and more that it is not able to describe all the properties of nearby galaxies that can be observed in great detail as well as that it has some problems in the mechanism by which matter is more rapidly gathered into large-scale structure such as galaxies and clusters of galaxies. In this work we revisit an alternative model, the scalar field dark matter (SFDM) model, which proposes that the galactic haloes form by condensation of a scalar field (SF) very early in the Universe, i.e., in this model the haloes of galaxies are as…
We study the effect of baryons on the abundance of structures and substructures in a Lambda-CDM cosmology, using a pair of high resolution cosmological simulations from the GIMIC project. Both simulations use identical initial conditions, but while one contains only dark matter, the other also includes baryons. We find that gas pressure, reionisation, supernova feedback, stripping, and truncated accretion systematically reduce the total mass and the abundance of structures below ~10^12 solar masses compared to the pure dark matter simulation. Taking this into account and adopting an appropriat…
Building upon results of cosmological simulations of ultra-light scalar field dark matter (SFDM), we present a comprehensive model for the density profiles of SFDM haloes as a function of halo virial mass $M_{\rm h}$ and scalar field mass $m$. The central regions of SFDM haloes are dominated by solitons with characteristic densities that increase with increasing halo mass and asymptote to CDM-like profiles at large radii. For scalar field masses $m \sim 10^{-22}$ eV, consistent with large-scale structure observations, $M_{\rm h} \sim 10^{10} \,M_\odot$ haloes have lower core densities than the…
The dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky Way Crater II and Antlia II have uncommonly low dynamical mass densities, due to their large size and low velocity dispersion. Previous work have failed to identify formation scenarios within the $Λ$CDM framework and have invoked cored dark matter haloes, processed by tides. I show that the tidal evolution of $Λ$CDM NFW haloes is richer than previously recognised: tidal heating causes the innermost regions of haloes that fall short of the mass-concentration relation to expand significantly, resulting in the formation of giant, kinematically cold satell…
We investigate the non-linear evolution of the relic cosmic neutrino background by running large box-size, high resolution N-body simulations. Our set of simulations explore the properties of neutrinos in a reference $Λ$CDM model with total neutrino masses between 0.05-0.60 eV in cold dark matter haloes of mass $10^{11}-10^{15}$ $h^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$, over a redshift range $z=0-2$. We compute the halo mass function and show that it is reasonably well fitted by the Sheth-Tormen formula. More importantly, we focus on the CDM and neutrino properties of the density and peculiar velocity fields in th…
We perform cosmological zoom-in simulations of $19$ relaxed cluster-mass haloes with the inclusion of adiabatic gas in the cold dark matter (CDM) and self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) models. These clusters are selected as dynamically relaxed clusters from a parent simulation with $M_{\rm 200} \simeq 1\operatorname{-}3\times 10^{15}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$. Both the dark matter and the intracluster gas distributions in SIDM appear more spherical than their CDM counterparts. Mock X-ray images are generated based on the simulations and are compared to the real X-ray images of $84$ relaxed clusters s…
(Abridged) Extensions of the standard model of particle physics predict very light bosons, ranging from about 10^{-5} eV for the QCD axion to 10^{-33} eV for ultra-light particles, which could be the cold dark matter (CDM) in the Universe. If so, their phase-space density must be high enough to form a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The fluid-like nature of BEC-CDM dynamics differs from that of standard collisionless CDM (sCDM), so observations of galactic haloes may distinguish them. sCDM has problems with galaxy observations on small scales, which BEC-CDM may overcome for a large range of pa…
We use cosmological hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations from the NIHAO project to investigate the response of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes to baryonic processes. Previous work has shown that the halo response is primarily a function of the ratio between galaxy stellar mass and total virial mass, and the density threshold above which gas is eligible to form stars, $n [{\rm cm}^{-3}]$. At low $n$ all simulations in the literature agree that dwarf galaxy haloes are cuspy, but at high $n\ge 100$ there is no consensus. We trace halo contraction in dwarf galaxies with $n\ge 100$ reported in…
We used high resolution dark matter only cosmological simulations to investigate the structural properties of Lambda Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) haloes over cosmic time. The haloes in our study range in mass from $\sim 10^{10}$ to $\sim 10^{12} \mathrm{M}_\odot$, and are resolved with $10^5$ to $10^7$ particles. We fit the spherically averaged density profiles of DM haloes with the three parameter Einasto function. For our sample of haloes, the Einasto shape parameter, $α$, is uncorrelated with the concentration, $c$, at fixed halo mass, and at all redshifts. Previous reports of an anti-correlat…
We use a sample of 17 strong gravitational lens systems from the BELLS GALLERY survey to quantify the amount of low-mass dark matter haloes within the lensing galaxies and along their lines of sight, and to constrain the properties of dark matter. Based on a detection criterion of 10$σ$, we report no significant detection in any of the lenses. Using the sensitivity function at the 10-$σ$ level, we have calculated the predicted number of detectable cold dark matter (CDM) line-of-sight haloes to be $μ_{l} = 1.17\pm1.08$, in agreement with our null detection. Assuming a detection sensitivity that…
We study the effect of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) and baryons on the shape of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and their dark matter haloes, comparing them to the predictions of the cold dark matter (CDM) scenario. We use five hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations of haloes hosting ETGs ($M_{\rm vir}\sim 10^{13}M_{\odot}$ and $M_{*}\sim10^{11}M_{\odot}$), simulated in CDM and a SIDM model with constant cross-section of $σ_T/m_χ= 1\ \mathrm{cm}^2 \mathrm{g}^{-1}$. We measure the three-dimensional and projected shapes of the dark matter haloes and their baryonic content using the inertia tensor …
[abridged] We introduce the Phoenix Project, a set of $Λ$CDM simulations of the dark matter component of nine rich galaxy clusters. Each cluster is simulated at least at two different numerical resolutions. For eight of them, the highest resolution corresponds to $\sim 130$ million particles within the virial radius, while for one this number is over one billion. We study the structure and substructure of these systems and contrast them with six galaxy-sized dark matter haloes from the Aquarius Project, simulated at comparable resolution. This comparison highlights the approximate mass invaria…
Dark matter (DM) haloes forming near the thermal cut-off scale of the density perturbations are unique, since they are the smallest objects and form through monolithic gravitational collapse, while larger haloes contrastingly have experienced mergers. While standard cold dark matter (CDM) simulations readily produce haloes that follow the universal Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) density profile with an inner slope, $ρ\propto r^{-α}$, with $α=1$, recent simulations have found that when the free-streaming cut-off expected for the CDM model is resolved, the resulting haloes follow nearly power-law den…
Shock waves developed during the formation and evolution of cosmic structures encode crucial information on the hierarchical formation of the Universe. We analyze an Eulerian AMR hydro + N-body simulation in a $Λ$CDM cosmology focused on the study of cosmological shock waves. The combination of a shock-capturing algorithm together with the use of a halo finder allows us to study the morphological structures of the shock patterns, the statistical properties of shocked cells, and the correlations between the cosmological shock waves appearing at different scales and the properties of the haloes …
The detection of planar structures within the satellite systems of both the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) has been reported as being in stark contradiction to the predictions of the standard cosmological model ($Λ$CDM). Given the ambiguity in defining a planar configuration, it is unclear how to interpret the low incidence of the MW and M31 planes in $Λ$CDM. We investigate the prevalence of satellite planes around galactic mass haloes identified in high resolution cosmological simulations. We find that planar structures are very common, and that ~10% of $Λ$CDM haloes have even more promin…
We study the physical properties, formation histories, and environment of galaxies without a significant "classical" spheroidal component, as predicted by semi-analytical models of galaxy formation and evolution. This work is complementary to the analysis presented in De Lucia et al., (2011), where we focus on the relative contribution of various physical mechanisms responsible for bulge assembly in a Lambda-CDM cosmology. We find that the fraction of bulgeless galaxies is a strong decreasing function of stellar mass: they represent a negligible fraction of the galaxy population with M* > 10^1…
We study the spherical collapse model in the presence of external gravitational tidal shear fields for different dark energy scenarios and investigate the impact on the mass function and cluster number counts. While previous studies of the influence of shear and rotation on $δ_\mathrm{c}$ have been performed with heuristically motivated models, we try to avoid this model dependence and sample the external tidal shear values directly from the statistics of the underlying linearly evolved density field based on first order Lagrangian perturbation theory. Within this self-consistent approach, in …
Comparing the excursion set and CUSP formalisms for the derivation of the halo mass function, we investigate the role of the mass definition in the properties of the multiplicity function of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes. We show that the density profile for haloes formed from triaxial peaks that undergo ellipsoidal collapse and virialisation is such that the ratio between the mean inner density and the outer local density is essentially independent of mass. This causes that, for suited values of the spherical overdensity $Δ$ and the linking length $b$, SO and FoF masses are essentially equiva…
We analyze the properties of dark matter halos in the cold-plus-warm dark matter cosmologies (CWDM). We study their dependence on the fraction and velocity dispersion of the warm particle, keeping the free-streaming scale fixed. To this end we consider three models with the same free-streaming: (1) a mixture of 90% of CDM and 10% of WDM with the mass 1 keV; (2) a mixture of 50% of CDM and 50% of WDM with the mass 5 keV; and (3) pure WDM with the mass 10 keV. "Warm" particles have rescaled Fermi-Dirac spectrum of primordial velocities (as non-resonantly produced sterile neutrinos would have). W…
In this paper we study the density profiles of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) haloes spanning the full observable mass range, from dwarf galaxies to galaxy clusters. Using realistic simulations that model the baryonic physics relevant for galaxy formation, we compare the density profiles of haloes simulated with either SIDM or cold and collisionless dark matter (CDM) to those inferred from observations of stellar velocity dispersion, gas rotation curves, weak and strong gravitational lensing, and/or X-ray maps. We make our comparison in terms of the maximal surface density of haloes, circ…
We use high-resolution hydrodynamical simulation to test the difference of halo properties in cold dark matter (CDM) and a self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) scenario with a constant cross-section of $σ^\text{T}/m_χ=1\;\text{cm}^{2}\text{g}^{-1}$. We find that the interplay between dark matter self-interaction and baryonic physics induces a complex evolution of the halo properties, which depends on the halo mass and morphological type, as well as on the halo mass accretion history. While high mass haloes, selected as analogues of early-type galaxies, show cored profiles in the SIDM run, syste…
A Promise for the JWST era: Massive black holes directly collapsed from wave dark matter haloes, and Star formation in and around their accretion flows
A possibility of DM being multicomponent has a strong implication on resolving decades-long known cosmological problems on small scale. In addition to elastic scattering, the model allows for inelastic interactions, which can be characterized by a 'velocity kick' parameter. The simplest 2cDM model with cross section $0.01\lesssimσ/m<1\textrm{ cm}^{2}{ \rm g}^{-1}$ and the kick velocity $V_{k}\simeq 100\textrm{ km s}^{-1}$ has been shown to robustly resolve the missing satellites, core-cusp, and too-big-to-fail problems in $N$-body cosmological simulations tested on MW-like haloes of a virial m…
Dark matter haloes in Lambda CDM simulations grow by mergers with other haloes as well as accretion of "diffuse" non-halo material. We quantify the mass growth rates via these two processes, dM_mer/dt and dM_dif/dt, and their dependence on halo environment using the ~500,000 haloes in the Millennium simulation. Adopting a local mass density parameter as a measure of halo environment, we find the two rates show strong but opposite environmental dependence, with mergers playing an increasingly important role for halo growths in overdense regions and diffuse accretion dominating growth in voids. …
We study the scaling relations between dark matter (DM) haloes and galaxy discs using 175 galaxies from the SPARC database. We explore two cosmologically motivated DM halo profiles: the Einasto profile from DM-only simulations and the DC14 profile from hydrodynamic simulations. We fit the observed rotation curves using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method and break the disc-halo degeneracy using near-infrared photometry and $Λ$CDM-motivated priors. We find that the characteristic volume density $ρ_{\rm s}$ of DM haloes is nearly constant over $\sim$5 decades in galaxy luminosity. The scale radius…
Self-gravitating astronomical objects often show a central plateau in the density profile (core) whose physical origin is hotly debated. Cores are theoretically expected in N-body systems of maximum entropy, however, they are not present in the canonical N-body numerical simulations of cold dark matter (CDM). Our work shows that despite this apparent contradiction between theory and numerical simulations, they are fully consistent. Simply put, cores are characteristic of systems in thermodynamic equilibrium, but thermalizing collisions are purposely suppressed in CDM simulations. When collisio…
We study the empirical relation between an astronomical object's angular momentum $J$ and mass $M$, $J=βM^α$, the $J-M$ relation, using N-body simulations. In particular, we investigate the time evolution of the $J-M$ relation to study how the initial power spectrum and cosmological model affect this relation, and to test two popular models of its origin - mechanical equilibrium and tidal torque theory. We find that in the $Λ$CDM model, $α$ starts with a value of $\sim 1.5$ at high redshift $z$, increases monotonically, and finally reaches $5/3$ near $z=0$, whereas $β$ evolves linearly with ti…
We derive the halo mass function (HMF) for fuzzy dark matter (FDM) by solving the excursion set problem explicitly with a mass-dependent barrier function, which has not been done before. We find that compared to the naive approach of the Sheth--Tormen HMF for FDM, our approach has a higher cut off mass and the cut off mass changes less strongly with redshifts. Using merger trees constructed with a modified version of the Lacey & Cole formalism that accounts for suppressed small scale power and the scale-dependent growth of FDM haloes and the semi-analytic GALACTICUS code, we study the statisti…
Ibata et al. (2013) recently reported the existence of a vast thin plane of dwarf galaxies (VTPD) orbiting around Andromeda. We investigate whether such a configuration can be reproduced within the standard cosmological framework and search for similar planes of co-rotating satellite galaxies around Andromeda-like host haloes in data from the Millennium II simulation combined with a semi-analytic galaxy formation model. We apply a baryonic mass cut of $2.8\times 10^4 \text{M}_{\text{sun}}$ for the satellite haloes and restrict the data to a PAndAS like field. If we include the so-called orphan…
Using a statistical sample of dark matter haloes drawn from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations of the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model, we quantify the impact of a simulated halo's mass accretion and merging history on two commonly used measures of its dynamical state, the virial ratio eta and the centre of mass offset Delta r. Quantifying this relationship is important because the degree to which a halo is dynamically equilibrated will influence the reliability with which we can measure characteristic equilibrium properties of the structure and kinematics of a population of haloes. We beg…
We calculate the orbital angular momentum of dark matter subhaloes in the Aquarius simulations of cold dark matter galactic haloes. We calculate the orientation of their angular momentum relative to that of the spin vector of their host halo and find a variety of different configurations. All six Aquarius haloes contain statistically significant populations of subhalo orbits that are aligned with the main halo spin. All haloes posses a population of subhaloes that rotates in the same direction as the main halo and three of them possess, in addition, a population that rotates in the opposite di…
We combine the isothermal Jeans model and the model of adiabatic halo contraction into a simple semi-analytic procedure for computing the density profile of self-interacting dark-matter (SIDM) haloes with the gravitational influence from the inhabitant galaxies. We show that the model agrees well with cosmological SIDM simulations over the entire core-forming stage and up to the onset of gravothermal core-collapse. Using this model, we show that the halo response to baryons is more diverse in SIDM than in CDM and depends sensitively on galaxy size, a desirable link in the context of the struct…
