A possibility of DM being multicomponent has a strong implication on resolving decades-long known cosmological problems on small scale. In addition to elastic scattering, the model allows for inelastic interactions, which can be characterized by a 'velocity kick' parameter. The simplest 2cDM model with cross section $0.01\lesssimσ/m<1\textrm{ cm}^{2}{ \rm g}^{-1}$ and the kick velocity $V_{k}\simeq 100\textrm{ km s}^{-1}$ has been shown to robustly resolve the missing satellites, core-cusp, and too-big-to-fail problems in $N$-body cosmological simulations tested on MW-like haloes of a virial mass $\sim5 \times 10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$ (Paper I $\&$ II). With the aim of further constraining the parameter space available for the 2cDM model, we extend our analysis to dwarf and galaxy cluster haloes with their virial mass of $\sim 10^7 - 10^8$ and $\sim 10^{13} - 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, respectively. We find $σ_{0} / m \gtrsim 0.1 \textrm{ cm}^{2}{\rm g}^{-1}$ is preferentially disfavored for both dwarfs and galaxy cluster haloes in comparison with observations, while $σ_{0} / m = 0.001 \textrm{ cm}^{2}{\rm g}^{-1}$ causes little perceptible difference from that of the CDM counterpart for most of the cross section's velocity dependence studied in this work. Our main result is that within the reasonable set of parameters the 2cDM model can successfully explain the observational trends seen in dwarf galaxy and galaxy cluster haloes and the model leaves us an open window for other possible alternative DM models.
In reionized regions of the Universe, gas can only collapse to form stars in dark matter (DM) haloes which grow to be sufficiently massive. If star formation is prevented in the minihalo progenitors of such DM haloes at redshifts z >~ 20, then these haloes will not be self-enriched with metals and so may host Population (Pop) III star formation. We estimate an upper limit for the abundance of Pop III star clusters which thus form in the reionized Universe, as a function of redshift. Depending on the minimum DM halo mass for star formation, between of the order of one and of the order of a thou…
This work investigates a set of cosmological collisionless N-body simulations with featured power spectra of initial perturbations in the context of the core-cusp and satellites problems. On the studied power spectra some scales of fluctuations were suppressed. Such spectral features can be caused by multicomponent dark matter. The density profiles innermost resolved slopes $α\equiv d \log(ρ) /d \log(r) $ of the five largest haloes were measured and its dependence on the parameters of the suppression was traced. In a certain range of the parameters the slopes flatten from initial value of abou…
With this Paper we complete a comprehensive study of substructure in dark matter haloes. In Paper I we derived the radial distribution and mass function (MF) of accreted subhaloes (scaled to the radius and mass of the host halo) and showed they are essentially universal. This is not the case, however, for those of stripped subhaloes, which depend on halo mass and assembly history. In Paper II we derived these latter properties in the simplest case of purely accreting haloes. Here we extend the study to ordinary haloes having suffered major mergers. After showing that all the properties of subs…
Motivated by recent theoretical work suggesting that a substantial fraction of Population (Pop) III stars may have had masses low enough for them to survive to the present day, we consider the role that the accretion of metal-enriched gas may have had in altering their surface composition, thereby disguising them as Pop II stars. We demonstrate that if weak, Solar-like winds are launched from low-mass Pop III stars formed in the progenitors of the dark matter halo of the Galaxy, then such stars are likely to avoid significant enrichment via accretion of material from the interstellar medium. W…
We investigate the influence of the initial proto-galaxies over-densities and masses on their evolution, to understand whether the internal properties of the proto-galactic haloes are sufficient to account for the varied properties of the galactic populations. By means of fully hydrodynamical N-body simulations performed with the code EvoL we produce twelve self-similar models of early-type galaxies of different initial masses and over-densities, following their evolution from z \geq 20 down to z \leq 1. The simulations include radiative cooling, star formation, stellar energy feedback, a reio…
In recent years, the usefulness of astrophysical objects as Dark Matter (DM) probes has become more and more evident, especially in view of null results from direct detection and particle production experiments. The potentially observable signatures of DM gravitationally trapped inside a star, or another compact astrophysical object, have been used to forecast stringent constraints on the nucleon-Dark Matter interaction cross section. Currently, the probes of interest are: at high red-shifts, Population III stars that form in isolation, or in small numbers, in very dense DM minihalos at $z\sim…
We explore the evolution of halo spins in the cosmic web using a very large sample of dark matter haloes in the $Λ$CDM Planck-Millennium N-body simulation. We use the NEXUS+ multiscale formalism to identify the hierarchy of filaments and sheets of the cosmic web at several redshifts. We find that at all times the magnitude of halo spins correlates with the web environment, being largest in filaments, and, for the first time, we show that it also correlates with filament thickness as well as the angle between spin-orientation and the spine of the host filament. For example, massive haloes in th…
We develop a new ``Multicomponent and Variable Velocity'' (MVV) galactic outflow model for cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations. The MVV wind model reflects the fact that the wind material can arise from different phases in the interstellar medium (ISM), and the mass-loading factor in the MVV model is a function of galaxy stellar mass. We find that the simulation with the MVV outflow has the following characteristics: (i) the intergalactic medium (IGM) is hardly heated up, and the mean IGM temperature is almost the same as in the no-wind run; (ii) it has lower cosmic s…
In previous works we proposed the Reverse Zeldovich Approximation (RZA) method, which can be used to estimate the cosmological initial conditions underlying the galaxy distribution in the Local Universe using peculiar velocity data. In this paper, we apply the technique to run constrained cosmological simulations from the RZA-reconstructed initial conditions, designed to reproduce the large-scale structure of the Local Universe. We test the method with mock peculiar velocity catalogues extracted from a reference simulation. We first reconstruct the initial conditions of this reference simulati…
Starlight from galaxies plays a pivotal role throughout the process of cosmic reionisation. We present the statistics of dwarf galaxy properties at z > 7 in haloes with masses up to 10^9 solar masses, using a cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulation that follows their buildup starting with their Population III progenitors. We find that metal-enriched star formation is not restricted to atomic cooling ($T_{\rm vir} \ge 10^4$ K) haloes, but can occur in haloes down to masses ~10^6 solar masses, especially in neutral regions. Even though these smallest galaxies only host up to 10^4 solar m…
We present a study of unprecedented statistical power regarding the halo-to-halo variance of dark matter substructure. Using a combination of N-body simulations and a semi-analytical model, we investigate the variance in subhalo mass fractions and subhalo occupation numbers, with an emphasis on how these statistics scale with halo formation time. We demonstrate that the subhalo mass fraction, f_sub, is mainly a function of halo formation time, with earlier forming haloes having less substructure. At fixed formation redshift, the average f_sub is virtually independent of halo mass, and the mass…
We test two methods, including one that is newly proposed in this work, for correcting for the effects of chameleon $f(R)$ gravity on the scaling relations between the galaxy cluster mass and four observable proxies. Using the first suite of cosmological simulations that simultaneously incorporate both full physics of galaxy formation and Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity, we find that these rescaling methods work with a very high accuracy for the gas temperature, the Compton $Y$-parameter of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect and the X-ray analogue of the $Y$-parameter. This allows the scaling relati…
Our work is based on the stacked weak-lensing analysis of a sample of 80 strong-lensing galaxy groups. Our main results are the following: (i) the lensing signal does not allow us to firmly reject a simple singular isothermal sphere mass distribution compared to the expected NFW mass profile; (ii) we obtain an average concentration $c_{200}=8.6_{-1.3}^{+2.1}$ that is much higher than the expected value from numerical simulations for the corresponding average mass $M_{200}=0.73_{-0.10}^{+0.11}\times10^{14}\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$; (iii) the combination of our results with those at larger mass scales…
Dark matter (DM) with sizeable self-interactions mediated by a light species offers a compelling explanation of the observed galactic substructure; furthermore, the direct coupling between DM and a light particle contributes to the DM annihilation in the early universe. If the DM abundance is due to a dark particle-antiparticle asymmetry, the DM annihilation cross-section can be arbitrarily large, and the coupling of DM to the light species can be significant. We consider the case of asymmetric DM interacting via a light (but not necessarily massless) Abelian gauge vector boson, a dark photon.…
We study the relationship between dark-matter haloes and matter in the MIP $N$-body simulation ensemble, which allows precision measurements of this relationship, even deeply into voids. What enables this is a lack of discreteness, stochasticity, and exclusion, achieved by averaging over hundreds of possible sets of initial small-scale modes, while holding fixed large-scale modes that give the cosmic web. We find (i) that dark-matter-halo formation is greatly suppressed in voids; there is an exponential downturn at low densities in the otherwise power-law matter-to-halo density bias function. …
In this third paper of the series, we investigate the effects of warm dark matter with a particle mass of $m_\mathrm{WDM}=3\,\mathrm{keV}$ on the smallest galaxies in our Universe. We present a sample of 21 hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of dwarf galaxies and 20 simulations of satellite-host galaxy interaction that we performed both in a Cold Dark Matter (CDM) and Warm Dark Matter (WDM) scenario. In the WDM simulations, we observe a higher critical mass for the onset of star formation. Structure growth is delayed in WDM, as a result WDM haloes have a stellar population on average two …
(Abridged) A large fraction of the gas in galactic haloes has temperatures between 10^4.5 and 10^7 K. At these temperatures, cooling is dominated by metal-line emission if the metallicity Z>~0.1 Zsun. We explore the detectability of several lines using large cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations. We stack surface brightness maps centred on galaxies to calculate the expected mean surface brightness profiles for different halo masses. Assuming a detection limit of 10^-1 photon s^-1 cm^-2 sr^-1, proposed X-ray telescopes can detect O VIII emission from z=0.125 out to 80% of the virial radius (…
We derive the density profile for collisionless dissipationless dark matter haloes in hierarchical cosmologies making use of the Secondary Infall (SI) model. The novelties are: i) we deal with triaxial virialised objects; ii) their seeds in the linear regime are peaks endowed with {\it unconvolved} spherically averaged density profiles according to the peak formalism; iii) the initial peculiar velocities are taken into account; and iv) accreting haloes are assumed to develop from the inside out, keeping the instantaneous inner system unaltered. The validity of this latter assumption is accurat…
We present the measurements and modelling of the projected and redshift-space clustering of CMASS galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 11. For a volume-limited luminous red galaxy sample in the redshift range of $0.48<z<0.55$, we perform halo occupation distribution modelling of the small- and intermediate-scale ($0.1$--$60h^{-1}{\rm {Mpc}}$) projected and redshift-space two-point correlation functions, with an accurate model built on high resolution $N$-body simulations. To interpret the measured redshift-space distortions, the dist…
We use a suite of N-body simulations that incorporate massive neutrinos as an extra-set of particles to investigate their effect on the halo mass function. We show that for cosmologies with massive neutrinos the mass function of dark matter haloes selected using the spherical overdensity (SO) criterion is well reproduced by the fitting formula of Tinker et al. (2008) once the cold dark matter power spectrum is considered instead of the total matter power, as it is usually done. The differences between the two implementations, i.e. using $P_{\rm cdm}(k)$ instead of $P_{\rm m}(k)$, are more pron…
We simultaneously constrain cosmology and galaxy bias using measurements of galaxy abundances, galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We use the conditional luminosity function (which describes the halo occupation statistics as function of galaxy luminosity) combined with the halo model (which describes the non-linear matter field in terms of its halo building blocks) to describe the galaxy-dark matter connection. We explicitly account for residual redshift space distortions in the projected galaxy-galaxy correlation functions, and marginalize over…
We use the kinematics of satellite galaxies that orbit around the central galaxy in a dark matter halo to infer the scaling relations between halo mass and central galaxy properties. Using galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we investigate the halo mass-luminosity relation (MLR) and the halo mass-stellar mass relation (MSR) of central galaxies. In particular, we focus on the dependence of these scaling relations on the colour of the central galaxy. We find that red central galaxies on average occupy more massive haloes than blue central galaxies of the same luminosity. However, at fixe…
We study the dark and luminous mass distributions, circular velocity curves (CVC), line-of-sight kinematics, and angular momenta for a sample of 42 cosmological zoom simulations of massive galaxies. Using a temporal smoothing technique, we are able to reach large radii. We find that: (i)The dark matter halo density profiles outside a few kpc follow simple power-law models, with flat dark matter CVCs for lower-mass systems, and rising CVCs for high-mass haloes. The projected stellar density distributions at large radii can be fitted by Sersic functions with n>10, larger than for typical ETGs. (…
We examine the origin of the mass discrepancy--radial acceleration relation (MDAR) of disk galaxies. This is a tight empirical correlation between the disk centripetal acceleration and that expected from the baryonic component. The MDAR holds for most radii probed by disk kinematic tracers, regardless of galaxy mass or surface brightness. The relation has two characteristic accelerations; $a_0$, above which all galaxies are baryon-dominated; and $a_{\rm min}$, an effective minimum aceleration probed by kinematic tracers in isolated galaxies. We use a simple model to show that these trends aris…
Using a Bayesian framework, we quantify what current observations imply about the history of the epoch of reionisation (EoR). We use a popular, three-parameter EoR model, flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of physically-plausible reionisation histories. We study the impact of various EoR observations: (i) the optical depth to the CMB measured by Planck 2016; (ii) the dark fraction in the Lyman $α$ and $β$ forests; (iii) the redshift evolution of galactic Ly$α$ emission (so-called "Ly$α$ fraction"); (iv) the clustering of Ly$α$ emitters; (v) the IGM damping wing imprint in the spectrum…
We derive new constraints on the non-gravitational baryon-dark-matter scattering (BDMS) by evaluating the mass thresholds of dark matter (DM) haloes in which primordial gas can cool efficiently to form Population III (Pop III) stars, based on the timing of the observed 21-cm absorption signal. We focus on the BDMS model with interaction cross-section $σ=σ_{1}[v/(1\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}})]^{-4}$, where $v$ is the relative velocity of the encounter. Our results rule out the region in parameter space with $σ_{1}\gtrsim 10^{-19}\ \mathrm{cm^{2}}$ and DM particle mass $m_χc^{2}\lesssim 3\times 10^{-2…

We explore using our continuity approach the underlying connections between the evolution of the faint-end slope of the stellar mass function of star-forming galaxies, the logarithmic slope of the sSFR-mass relation and the merging of galaxies. We derive analytically the consequences of the observed constancy of the faint-end slope since redshifts of at least z ~ 2. If the logarithmic slope of the sSFR-mass relation is negative, then the faint-end slope should quickly diverge due to the differential mass increase of galaxies on the star-forming main sequence, and this will also quickly destroy…
We present results of cosmological N-body hydrodynamic chemistry simulations of primordial structure growth and evolution in a scenario with warm dark matter (WDM) having a mass of 3 keV (thermal relic) and compare with a model consisting of standard cold dark matter (CDM). We focus on the high-redshift universe ($z>6$), where the structure formation process should better reflect the primordial (linear) differences in terms of matter power spectrum. We find that early epochs can be exceptional probes of the dark-matter nature. Non-linear WDM power spectra and mass functions are up to 2 dex low…
We examine the circular velocity profiles of galaxies in ΛCDM cosmological hydrodynamical simulations from the EAGLE and LOCAL GROUPS projects and compare them with a compilation of observed rotation curves of galaxies spanning a wide range in mass. The shape of the circular velocity profiles of simulated galaxies varies systematically as a function of galaxy mass, but shows remarkably little variation at fixed maximum circular velocity. This is especially true for low-mass dark matter-dominated systems, reflecting the expected similarity of the underlying cold dark matter haloes. This is at o…
We present integral field spectroscopy observations, covering the [O III]4959,5007 emission-line doublet of eight high-redshift (z=1.4-3.4) ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) that host Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) activity, including known sub-millimetre luminous galaxies (SMGs). The targets have moderate radio luminosities that are typical of high-redshift ULIRGs (L(1.4GHz)=10^(24)-10^(25)W/Hz) and therefore are not radio-loud AGN. We de-couple kinematic components due to the galaxy dynamics and mergers from those due to outflows. We find evidence in the four most luminous systems (L([…
