For a group $G$ and a subgroup $H$ of $G$ this article discusses the normalizer of $H$ in the units of a group ring $RG$. We prove that $H$ is only normalized by the `obvious' units, namely products of elements of $G$ normalizing $H$ and units of $RG$ centralizing $H$, provided $H$ is cyclic. Moreover we show that the normalizers of all subgroups of certain nilpotent and metacyclic groups in the corresponding group rings are as small as possible. These classes contain all dihedral groups, all finite nilpotent groups and all finite groups with all Sylow subgroups being cyclic.
Given any group $G$, the normalizer $\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ of the subgroup of left translations in the group of all permutations on $G$ is called the holomorph, and the normalizer $\mathrm{NHol}(G)$ of $\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ in turn is called the multiple holomorph. The quotient $T(G) = \mathrm{NHol}(G)/\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ has been computed for various families of groups $G$ in the literature. In this paper, we shall supplement the existing results by considering finite split metacyclic $p$-groups $G $ with $p$ an odd prime. We are able to give a closed formula for the order of $T(G)$ when $G$ satisfies so…
There has been a great importance in understanding the nilpotent multipliers of finite groups in recent past. Let a group $G$ be presented as the quotient of a free group $F$ by a normal subgroup $R$. Given a positive integer $c$, the $c$-nilpotent multiplier of the group $G$ is the abelian group $\mathcal M^{(c)}(G)=(R\cap γ_{c+1}(F))/γ_{c+1}(R,F)$, where $γ_1(R,F)=R$, $γ_{c+1}(R,F)=[γ_c(R,F),F]$, and $γ_{c+1}(F)=γ_{c+1}(F,F)$. In particular, $\mathcal{M}^{(1)}(G)$ is the Schur multiplier of $G$. The crucial aspect of the research in to the $c$-nilpotent multipliers of groups includes either …
Suppose that a finite group $G$ admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms FH of coprime order with cyclic kernel F and complement H such that the fixed point subgroup $C_G(H)$ of the complement is nilpotent of class $c$. It is proved that $G$ has a nilpotent characteristic subgroup of index bounded in terms of $c$, $|C_G(F)|$, and $|FH|$ whose nilpotency class is bounded in terms of $c$ and $|H|$ only. This generalizes the previous theorem of the authors and P. Shumyatsky, where for the case of $C_G(F)=1$ the whole group was proved to be nilpotent of $(c,|H|)$-bounded class. Examples show that…
Let P be a finite metacyclic 2-group and F a fusion system on P. We prove that F is nilpotent unless P has maximal class or P is homocyclic, i.e. P is a direct product of two isomorphic cyclic groups. As a consequence we obtain the numerical invariants for 2-blocks with metacyclic defect groups. This paper is a part of the author's PhD thesis.
Suppose that a metacyclic Frobenius group $FH$, with kernel $F$ and complement $H$, acts by automorphisms on a finite group $G$, in such a way that $C_G(F)$ is trivial and $C_G(H)$ is nilpotent. It is known that $G$ is nilpotent and its nilpotency class can be bounded in terms of $|H|$ and the nilpotency class of $C_G(H)$. Until now, it was not clear whether the bound could be made independent of the order of $H$. In this article, we construct a family $\mathfrak{G}$ of finite nilpotent groups, of unbounded nilpotency class. Each group in $\mathfrak{G}$ admits a metacyclic Frobenius group of a…
We study the class of groups having the property that every non-nilpotent subgroup is equal to its normalizer. These groups are either soluble or perfect. We completely describe the structure of soluble groups and finite perfect groups with the above property. Furthermore, we give some structural information in the infinite perfect case.
We solve the following algorithmic problems using TC0 circuits, or in logspace and quasilinear time, uniformly in the class of nilpotent groups with bounded nilpotency class and rank: subgroup conjugacy, computing the normalizer and isolator of a subgroup, coset intersection, and computing the torsion subgroup. Additionally, if any input words are provided in compressed form as straight-line programs or in Mal'cev coordinates the algorithms run in quartic time.
A finite group $P$ is said to be \emph{primary} if $|P|=p^{a}$ for some prime $p$. We say a primary subgroup $P$ of a finite group $G$ satisfies the \emph{Frobenius normalizer condition} in $G$ if $N_{G}(P)/C_{G}(P)$ is a $p$-group provided $P$ is $p$-group. In this paper, we determine the structure of a finite group $G$ in which every non-subnormal primary subgroup satisfies the Frobenius normalized condition. In particular, we prove that if every non-normal primary subgroup of $G$ satisfies the Frobenius condition, then $G/F(G)$ is cyclic and every maximal non-normal nilpotent subgroup $U$ o…
We establish a surprising correspondence between groups definable in o-minimal structures and linear algebraic groups, in the nilpotent case. It turns out that in the o-minimal context, like for finite groups, nilpotency is equivalent to the normalizer property or to uniqueness of Sylow subgroups. As a consequence, we show algebraic decompositions of o-minimal nilpotent groups, and we prove that a nilpotent Lie group is definable in an o-minimal expansion of the reals if and only if it is a linear algebraic group.
Let $σ=\{σ_{i} | i\in I\}$ be a partition of the set $\Bbb{P}$ of all primes and $G$ a finite group. A chief factor $H/K$ of $G$ is said to be $σ$-central if the semidirect product $(H/K)\rtimes (G/C_{G}(H/K))$ is a $σ_{i}$-group for some $i=i(H/K)$. $G$ is called $σ$-nilpotent if every chief factor of $G$ is $σ$-central. We say that $G$ is semi-$σ$-nilpotent (respectively weakly semi-$σ$-nilpotent) if the normalizer $N_{G}(A)$ of every non-normal (respectively every non-subnormal) $σ$-nilpotent subgroup $A$ of $G$ is $σ$-nilpotent. In this paper we determine the structure of finite semi-$σ$-n…
Zassenhaus Conjecture for torsion units states that every augmentation one torsion unit of the integral group ring of a finite group G is conjugate to an element of G in the units of rational group algebra QG. This conjecture has been proved for nilpotent groups, metacyclic groups and some other families of groups. We prove the conjecture for cyclic-by-abelian groups.
We consider the following two finiteness conditions on normalizers and centralizers in a group G: (i) |N_G(H):H| is finite for every non-normal subgroup H of G, and (ii) |C_G(x):<x>| is finite for every non-normal cyclic subgroup <x> of G. We show that (i) and (ii) are equivalent in the classes of locally finite groups and locally nilpotent groups. In both cases, the groups satisfying these conditions are a special kind of cyclic extensions of Dedekind groups. We also study a variation of (i) and (ii), where the requirement of finiteness is replaced with a bound. In this setting, we extend our…
In this paper, we show that all Coleman automorphisms of a finite group with self-central minimal non-trivial characteristic subgroup are inner; therefore the normalizer property holds for these groups. Using our methods we show that the holomorph and wreath product of finite simple groups, among others, have no non-inner Coleman automorphisms. As a further application of our theorems, we provide partial answers to questions raised by M. Hertweck and W. Kimmerle. Furthermore, we characterize the Coleman automorphisms of extensions of a finite nilpotent group by a cyclic $p$-group. Lastly, we n…
Let $G$ be a finite permutation group on $Ω.$ An ordered sequence $(ω_1,\dots, ω_t)$ of elements of $Ω$ is an irredundant base for $G$ if the pointwise stabilizer is trivial and no point is fixed by the stabilizer of its predecessors. If all irredundant bases of $G$ have the same cardinality, $G$ is said to be an IBIS group. In this paper we give a classification of quasi-primitive soluble irreducible IBIS linear groups, and we also describe nilpotent and metacyclic IBIS linear groups and IBIS linear groups of odd order.
Let G be a semisimple algebraic group over a field K whose characteristic is very good for G, and let sigma be any G-equivariant isomorphism from the nilpotent variety to the unipotent variety; the map sigma is known as a Springer isomorphism. Let y in G(K), let Y in Lie(G)(K), and write C_y = C_G(y) and C_Y= C_G(Y) for the centralizers. We show that the center of C_y and the center of C_Y are smooth group schemes over K. The existence of a Springer isomorphism is used to treat the crucial cases where y is unipotent and where Y is nilpotent. Now suppose G to be quasisplit, and write C for the …
We study a class of two-generator two-relator groups, denoted $J_n(m,k)$, that arise in the study of relative asphericity as groups satisfying a transitional curvature condition. Particular instances of these groups occur in the literature as finite groups of intriguing orders. Here we find infinite families of non-elementary virtually free groups and of finite metabelian non-nilpotent groups, for which we determine the orders. All Mersenne primes arise as factors of the orders of the non-metacyclic groups in the class, as do all primes from other conjecturally infinite families of primes. We …

Suppose that a finite $p$-group $P$ admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms $FH$ with kernel $F$ that is a cyclic $p$-group and with complement $H$. It is proved that if the fixed-point subgroup $C_P(H)$ of the complement is nilpotent of class $c$, then $P$ has a characteristic subgroup of index bounded in terms of $c$, $|C_P(F)|$, and $|F|$ whose nilpotency class is bounded in terms of $c$ and $|H|$ only. Examples show that the condition of $F$ being cyclic is essential. The proof is based on a Lie ring method and a theorem of the authors and P. Shumyatsky about Lie rings with a metacyclic …
