For a group $G$, a {\it normalizer covering} of $G$ is a finite set of proper normalizers of some subgroups of $G$ whose union is $G$. We study $p$-groups ($p$ a prime) without a normalizer covering. As an application, we determine some non-nilpotent groups having a nilpotent normalizer covering.
Let $π$ be a set of primes and $\mathfrak{F}$ be a formation. In this article a properties of the class ${\rm w}^{*}_π\mathfrak{F}$ of all groups $G$, such that $π(G)\subseteq π(\mathfrak{F})$ and the normalizers of all Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ are $\mathfrak{F}$-subnormal in $G$ for every $p\inπ\capπ(G)$ are investigated. It is established that ${\rm w}^{*}_π\mathfrak{F}$ is a formation. Some hereditary saturated formations $\mathfrak{F}$ for which ${\rm w}^{*}_π\mathfrak{F}=\mathfrak{F}$ are founded.
This paper examines order three elements of finite groups which normalize no nontrivial 2-subgroup. The motivation for finding such elements arises out of a problem in modular representation theory. The question of when these elements appear in the almost simple groups was posed by Geoff Robinson in the context of studying 2-blocks of defect zero. For the almost simple groups, a complete classification of order three elements with this property is determined. On the basis of this result, necessary conditions are then given for the existence of such elements in a large class of finite groups.
The balanced superelliptic handlebody group is the normalizer of the transformation group of the balanced superelliptic covering space in the handlebody group of the total space. We give a finite presentation for the balanced superelliptic handlebody group. To give this presentation, we construct a finite presentation for the liftable Hilden group.
The balanced superelliptic mapping class group is the normalizer of the transformation group of the balanced superelliptic covering space in the mapping class group of the total surface. We give finite presentations for the balanced superelliptic mapping class groups of closed surfaces, surfaces with one marked point, and surfaces with one boundary component. To give these presentations, we construct finite presentations for corresponding liftable mapping class groups in a different generating set from Ghaswala-Winarski's presentation in \cite{Ghaswala-Winarski1}.
We advance superselection theory of pure states on a $C^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ outside of the conventional (DHR) setting. First, we canonically define conjugate and second conjugate classes of such states with respect to a given reference state $ω_{\mathrm{vac}}$ and background $a \in \mathrm{Aut}(\mathfrak{A})$. Next, for some subgroups $R \varsubsetneq S \varsubsetneq G\subset \mathrm{Aut}(\mathfrak{A})$ we study the family $\{\, ω_{\mathrm{vac}}\circ s\,|\, s\in S \}$ of infrared singular states whose superselection sectors may be disjoint for different $s$. We show that their conjugate …
In this paper we present some algebraic properties of subgroupoids and normal subgroupoids. We define the normalizer of a wide subgroupoid $\mathcal{H}$ and show that, as in the case of groups, the normalizer is the greatest wide subgroupoid of the groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ in which $\mathcal{H}$ is normal. Furthermore, we give the definition of center and commutator and prove that both are normal subgroupoids, the first one of the union of all the isotropy groups of $\mathcal{G}$ and the second one of $\mathcal{G}$. Finally, we introduce the concept of inner isomorphism of $\mathcal{G}$ and show…
We study the class of groups having the property that every non-nilpotent subgroup is equal to its normalizer. These groups are either soluble or perfect. We completely describe the structure of soluble groups and finite perfect groups with the above property. Furthermore, we give some structural information in the infinite perfect case.
The balanced superelliptic handlebody group is the normalizer of the transformation group of the balanced superelliptic covering space in the handlebody group of the total space. We prove that the balanced superelliptic mapping class group is generated by four elements. To prove this, we also proved that the liftable Hilden group is generated by three elements. This generating set for the liftable Hilden group is minimal except for some hyperelliptic cases and the generating set for the balanced superelliptic mapping class group above is also minimal for several cases.
In this paper, we show that all Coleman automorphisms of a finite group with self-central minimal non-trivial characteristic subgroup are inner; therefore the normalizer property holds for these groups. Using our methods we show that the holomorph and wreath product of finite simple groups, among others, have no non-inner Coleman automorphisms. As a further application of our theorems, we provide partial answers to questions raised by M. Hertweck and W. Kimmerle. Furthermore, we characterize the Coleman automorphisms of extensions of a finite nilpotent group by a cyclic $p$-group. Lastly, we n…
In this note we determine the finite groups that can be written as the union of any three irredundant/distinct proper subgroups. The finite groups that can uniquely be written as the union of three proper subgroups are also characterized.
The covering number of a group $G$, denoted by $σ(G)$, is the size of a minimal collection of proper subgroups of $G$ whose union is $G$. We investigate which integers are covering numbers of groups. We determine which integers $129$ or smaller are covering numbers, and we determine precisely or bound the covering number of every primitive monolithic group with a degree of primitivity at most $129$ by introducing effective new computational techniques. Furthermore, we prove that, if $\mathscr{F}_1$ is the family of finite groups $G$ such that all proper quotients of $G$ are solvable, then $\ma…
We establish a surprising correspondence between groups definable in o-minimal structures and linear algebraic groups, in the nilpotent case. It turns out that in the o-minimal context, like for finite groups, nilpotency is equivalent to the normalizer property or to uniqueness of Sylow subgroups. As a consequence, we show algebraic decompositions of o-minimal nilpotent groups, and we prove that a nilpotent Lie group is definable in an o-minimal expansion of the reals if and only if it is a linear algebraic group.
A covering of a group is a finite set of proper subgroups whose union is the whole group. A covering is minimal if there is no covering of smaller cardinality, and it is nilpotent if all its members are nilpotent subgroups. We complete a proof that every group that has a nilpotent minimal covering is solvable, starting from the previously known result that a minimal counterexample is an almost simple finite group.
Let $Γ$ be a non-elementary Kleinian group and $H<Γ$ a finitely generated, proper subgroup. We prove that if $Γ$ has finite co-volume, then the profinite completions of $H$ and $Γ$ are not isomorphic. If $H$ has finite index in $Γ$, then there is a finite group onto which $H$ maps but $Γ$ does not. These results streamline the existing proofs that there exist full-sized groups that are profinitely rigid in the absolute sense. They build on a circleof ideas that can be used to distinguish among the profinite completions of subgroups of finite index in other contexts, e.g. limit groups. We const…
A classical problem in the literature seeks the minimal number of proper subgroups whose union is a given finite group. A different question, with applications to error-correcting codes and graph colorings, involves covering vector spaces over finite fields by (minimally many) proper subspaces. In this note we cover $R$-modules by proper submodules for commutative rings $R$, thereby subsuming and recovering both cases above. Specifically, we study the smallest cardinal number $\aleph$, possibly infinite, such that a given $R$-module is a union of $\aleph$-many proper submodules. (1) We complet…
