We generalize the concept of coarse hypercyclicity, introduced by Feldman in \cite{Fe1}, to that of coarse topological transitivity on open cones. We show that a bounded linear operator acting on an infinite dimensional Banach space with a coarsely dense orbit on an open cone is hypercyclic and a coarsely topologically transitive (mixing) operator on an open cone is topologically transitive (mixing resp.). We also "localize" these concepts by introducing two new classes of operators called coarsely $J$-class and coarsely $D$-class operators and we establish some results that may make these classes of operators potentially interesting for further studying. Namely, we show that if a backward unilateral weighted shift on $l^2(\mathbb{N})$ is coarsely $J$-class (or $D$-class) on an open cone then it is hypercyclic. Then we give an example of a bilateral weighted shift on $l^{\infty}(\mathbb{Z})$ which is coarsely $J$-class, hence it is coarsely $D$-class, and not $J$-class. Note that, concerning the previous result, it is well known that the space $l^{\infty}(\mathbb{Z})$ does not support $J$-class bilateral weighted shifts, see \cite{CosMa2}. Finally, we show that there exists a non-separable Banach space which supports no coarsely $D$-class operators on open cones. Some open problems are added.
A coarse embedding of a metric space X into a metric space Y is a map f: X-->Y satisfying for every x, y in X: ϕ_1(d(x,y)) \leq d(f(x),f(y)) \leq ϕ_2(d(x,y)) where ϕ_1 and ϕ_2 are nondecreasing functions on [0,\infty) with values in [0,\infty), with the condition that ϕ_1(t) tends to \infty as t tends to \infty. We show that \ell_p does not coarsely embed in a Hilbert space for 2<p<\infty.
In these notes, we study the relation between uniform and coarse embeddings between Banach spaces. In order to understand this relation better, we also look at the problem of when a coarse embedding can be assumed to be topological. Among other results, we show that if a Banach space $X$ uniformly embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and uniformly embeds into $Y$, and if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and homeomorphically embeds into $Y$ by a map with uniformly continuous inverse.
We study how well a quasi-Banach space can be coarsely embedded into a Hilbert space. Given any quasi-Banach space X which coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space, we compute its Hilbert space compression exponent. We also show that the Hilbert space compression exponent of X is equal to the supremum of the amounts of snowflakings of X which admit a bi-Lipschitz embedding into a Hilbert space.
A map f between two metric spaces (X,d_1) and (Y,d_2) is called a coarse embedding of X into Y if there exist two nondecreasing functions phi_1, phi_2:[0,\infty) --> [0,\infty) such that: phi_1(d_1(x,y)) \leq d_2(f(x),f(y)) \leq phi_2(d_1(x,y)) for all x, y in X, and phi_1(t) tends to \infty as t tends to \infty. We characterize those quasi-Banach spaces that have a coarse embedding into a Hilbert space.
We prove that the class of reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ Banach spaces is coarsely rigid, meaning that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space $Y$, then $X$ is also reflexive and asymptotic-$c_0$. In order to achieve this result we provide a purely metric characterization of this class of Banach spaces. This metric characterization takes the form of a concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the Hamming graphs, which is rigid under coarse embeddings. Using an example of a quasi-reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space, we show that this concentration inequality…
Krivine and Maurey proved in 1981 that every stable Banach space contains almost isometric copies of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In 1983, Raynaud showed that if a Banach space uniformly embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ must contain an isomorphic copy of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In these notes, we show that if a Banach space coarsely embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ has a spreading model isomorphic to $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In particular, we obtain that there exist reflexive Banach spaces which do not coarsely embed into any sup…
We construct the first example of a coarsely non-amenable (= without Guoliang Yu's property A) metric space with bounded geometry which coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space.
We construct a finitely generated group which is an extension of two finitely generated groups coarsely embeddable into Hilbert space but which itself does not coarsely embed into Hilbert space. Our construction also provides a new infinite monster group: the first example of a finitely generated group that does not coarsely embed into Hilbert space and yet does not contain a weakly embedded expander.
It is known that the expanders arising as increasing sequences of level sets of warped cones, as introduced by the second-named author, do not coarsely embed into a Banach space as soon as the corresponding warped cone does not coarsely embed into this Banach space. Combining this with non-embeddability results for warped cones by Nowak and Sawicki, which relate the non-embeddability of a warped cone to a spectral gap property of the underlying action, we provide new examples of expanders that do not coarsely embed into any Banach space with nontrivial type. Moreover, we prove that these expan…
The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into eve…
We prove that not every metric space embeds coarsely into an Alexandrov space of nonpositive curvature. This answers a question of Gromov (1993) and is in contrast to the fact that any metric space embeds coarsely into an Alexandrov space of nonnegative curvature, as shown by Andoni, Naor and Neiman (2015). We establish this statement by proving that a metric space which is $q$-barycentric for some $q\in [1,\infty)$ has metric cotype $q$ with sharp scaling parameter. Our proof utilizes nonlinear (metric space-valued) martingale inequalities and yields sharp bounds even for some classical Banac…
The main purpose of the paper is to find some expansion properties of locally finite metric spaces which do not embed coarsely into a Hilbert space. The obtained result is used to show that infinite locally finite graphs excluding a minor embed coarsely into a Hilbert space. In an appendix a direct proof of the latter result is given.
In this paper we provide several \emph{metric universality} results. We exhibit for certain classes $\cC$ of metric spaces, families of metric spaces $(M_i, d_i)_{i\in I}$ which have the property that a metric space $(X,d_X)$ in $\cC$ is coarsely, resp. Lipschitzly, universal for all spaces in $\cC$ if the collection of spaces $(M_i,d_i)_{i\in I}$ equi-coarsely, respectively equi-Lipschitzly, embeds into $(X,d_X)$. Such families are built as certain Schreier-type metric subsets of $\co$. We deduce a metric analog to Bourgain's theorem, which generalized Szlenk's theorem, and prove that a space…

In these notes, we study nonlinear embeddings between Banach spaces which are also weakly sequentially continuous. In particular, our main result implies that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely (resp. uniformly) embeds into a Banach space $Y$ by a weakly sequentially continuous map, then every spreading model $(e_n)_n$ of a normalized weakly null sequence in $X$ satisfies \[\|e_1+\ldots+e_k\|_{\overlineδ_Y}\lesssim\|e_1+\ldots+e_k\|_S,\] where $\overlineδ_Y$ is the modulus of asymptotic uniform convexity of $Y$. Among other results, we obtain Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ so that $X$ coarsely (resp. u…
We investigate how coarse embeddability of box spaces into Hilbert space behaves under group extensions. In particular, we prove a result which implies that a semidirect product of a finitely generated free group by a finitely generated residually finite amenable group has a box space which coarsely embeds into Hilbert space. This provides a new class of examples of metric spaces with bounded geometry which coarsely embed into Hilbert space but do not have property A, generalising the example of Arzhantseva, Guentner and Spakula.
In this paper, we connect the rigidity problem and the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for Roe algebras. In particular, we show that if $X$ and $Y$ are two uniformly locally finite metric spaces such that their Roe algebras are $*$-isomorphic, then $X$ and $Y$ are coarsely equivalent provided either $X$ or $Y$ satisfies the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients. It is well-known that coarse embeddability into a Hilbert space implies the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients. On the other hand, we provide a new example of a finitely generated group satisfying the coarse Baum-C…
We give a direct proof of the fact that a quasi-Banach space coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space if and only if it uniformly embeds into a Hilbert space.
We generalize the construction of Arzhantseva, Guentner and Spakula of a box space of the free group which admits a coarse embedding into Hilbert space. We show that for a finitely generated free group, the box space corresponding to the derived $m$-series (for any integer $m\geq 2$) coarsely embeds into Hilbert space. This gives new examples of metric spaces with bounded geometry which coarsely embed into Hilbert space but do not have Yu's property A.
We show that warped cones over actions with spectral gaps do not embed coarsely into large classes of Banach spaces. In particular, there exist warped cones over actions of the free group that do not embed coarsely into $L_p$-spaces and there are warped cones over discrete group actions that do not embed into any Banach space with non-trivial type.
In this paper, we study the coarse Lipschitz geometry of Banach spaces with several asymptotic properties. Specifically, we look at asymptotically uniformly smoothness and convexity, and several distinct Banach-Saks-like properties. Among other results, we characterize the Banach spaces which are either coarsely or uniformly homeomorphic to $T^{p_1}\oplus \ldots \oplus T^{p_n}$, where each $T^{p_j}$ denotes the $p_j$-convexification of the Tsirelson space, for $p_1,\ldots,p_n\in (1,\ldots, \infty)$, and $2\not\in\{p_1,\ldots ,p_n\}$. We obtain applications to the coarse Lipschitz geometry of t…
The equivariant coarse Baum-Connes conjecture was firstly introduced by Roe [29] as a unified way to approach both the Baum-Connes conjecture and its coarse counterpart. In this paper, we prove that if an a-T-menable group $Γ$ acts properly and isometrically on a bounded geometry metric space $X$ with controlled distortion such that the quotient space $X/Γ$ is coarsely embeddable, then the equivariant coarse Baum-Connes conjecture holds for this action. This answers a question posed in [8] affirmatively.
Given a coarse space $(X,\mathcal{E})$, one can define a $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ called the uniform Roe algebra of $(X,\mathcal{E})$. It has been proved by J. Špakula and R. Willett that if the uniform Roe algebras of two uniformly locally finite metric spaces with property A are isomorphic, then the metric spaces are coarsely equivalent to each other. In this paper, we look at the problem of generalizing this result for general coarse spaces and on weakening the hypothesis of the spaces having property A.
We exhibit a finitely generated group $G$ and a sequence of finite index normal subgroups $N_n\trianglelefteq G$ such that for every finite generating subset $S\subseteq G$, the sequence of finite Cayley graphs $(G/N_n, S)$ does not coarsely embed into any $L^p$-space for $1\leqslant p<\infty$ (moreover, into any uniformly curved Banach space), and yet admits no weakly embedded expander. The reason why our examples do not coarsely embed is a new phenomenon called relative expansion, which we define in terms of Poincaré inequalities.
In this note we prove that the Kalton interlaced graphs do not equi-coarsely embed into the James space $\mathcal J$ nor into its dual $\mathcal J^*$. It is a particular case of a more general result on the non equi-coarse embeddability of the Kalton graphs into quasi-reflexive spaces with a special asymptotic stucture. This allows us to exhibit a coarse invariant for Banach spaces, namely the non equi-coarse embeddability of this family of graphs, which is very close to but different from the celebrated property $\mathcal Q$ of Kalton. We conclude with a remark on the coarse geometry of the J…

We generalize the notions of asymptotic dimension and coarse embeddings from metric spaces to quantum metric spaces in the sense of Kuperberg and Weaver. We show that quantum asymptotic dimension behaves well with respect to metric quotients and direct sums, and is preserved under quantum coarse embeddings. Moreover, we prove that a quantum metric space that equi-coarsely contains a sequence of reflexive quantum expanders must have infinite asymptotic dimension. This is done by proving a quantum version of a vertex-isoperimetric inequality for expanders, based upon a previously known edge-isop…
