Controllability and observability are important properties of a distributed paramater systems. The equivalence between the notion of exact observability and exact controllability holds in general. In this work, we define a new notion of controllability say weak which is related to some weak observability inequality and we give the equivalence between.
We prove controllability results for abstract systems of weakly coupled $N$ evolution equations in cascade by a reduced number of boundary or locally distributed controls ranging from a single up to $N-1$ controls. We give applications to cascade coupled systems of $N$ multi-dimensional-hyperbolic, parabolic and diffusive equations.
We consider the observability problem for non-autonomous evolution systems (i.e., the operators governing the system depend on time). We introduce an averaged Hautus condition and prove that for skew-adjoint operators it characterizes exact observability. Next, we extend this to more general class of operators under a growth condition on the associated evolution family. We give an application to the Schrödinger equation with time dependent potential and the damped wave equation with a time dependent damping coefficient.
Existence and uniqueness of mild solutions and evolution operators for a class of non-autonomous conformable fractional semi-linear systems and Their Exact Null Controllability
In a separable Hilbert space $X$, we study the linear evolution equation \begin{equation*} u'(t)+Au(t)+p(t)Bu(t)=0, \end{equation*} where $A$ is an accretive self-adjoint linear operator, $B$ is a bounded linear operator on $X$, and $p\in L^2_{loc}(0,+\infty)$ is a bilinear control. We give sufficient conditions in order for the above control system to be locally controllable to the ground state solution, that is, the solution of the free equation ($p\equiv0$) starting from the ground state of $A$. We also derive global controllability results in large time and discuss applications to paraboli…
The exact controllability to the origin for linear evolution control equation is considered. The problem is investigated by its transformation to infinite linear moment problem. Conditions for the existence of solution for infinite linear moment problem has been obtained. The obtained results are applied to the zero controllability for control evolution equations.
The paper deals with exact null-controllability problem for a linear control system consisting of two serially connected abstract control systems. Controllability conditions are obtained. Applications to the exact null-controllability for interconnected control system of heat and wave equations are considered.
In a separable Hilbert space $X$, we study the controlled evolution equation \begin{equation*} u'(t)+Au(t)+p(t)Bu(t)=0, \end{equation*} where $A\geq-σI$ ($σ\geq0$) is a self-adjoint linear operator, $B$ is a bounded linear operator on $X$, and $p\in L^2_{loc}(0,+\infty)$ is a bilinear control. We give sufficient conditions in order for the above nonlinear control system to be locally controllable to the $j$th eigensolution for any $j\geq1$. We also derive semi-global controllability results in large time and discuss applications to parabolic equations in low space dimension. Our method is cons…
In this article, we are discussing a more vital concept of controllability, termed total controllability. We have considered a nonlocal semilinear functional evolution equations with non-instantaneous impulses and finite delay in Hilbert spaces. A set of sufficient conditions of total controllability is obtained for the evolution system under consideration, by imposing the theory of C_0-semigroup and Banach fixed point theorem. We also established the total controllability results for a functional integro-differential equation. Finally, an example is given to demonstrate the feasibility of der…
Motivated by infinite-dimensional optimal control problems with endpoint state constraints, in this Note, we introduce the notion of finite codimensional exact controllability for evolution equations. It is shown that this new controllability is equivalent to the finite codimensionality condition in the literatures to guarantee Pontryagin's maximum principle. As examples, LQ problems with fixed endpoint state constraints for a wave and a heat equation are analyzed, respectively.
In this paper we study exact boundary controllability for a linear wave equation with strong and weak interior degeneration of the coefficient in the principle part of the elliptic operator. The objective is to provide a well-posedness analysis of the corresponding system and derive conditions for its controllability through boundary actions. Passing to a relaxed version of the original problem, we discuss existence and uniqueness of solutions, and using the HUM method we derive conditions on the rate of degeneracy for both exact boundary controllability and the lack thereof.
This article investigates the approximate controllability of second order non-autonomous functional evolution equations involving non-instantaneous impulses and nonlocal conditions. First, we discuss the approximate controllability of second order linear system in detail, which lacks in the existing literature. Then, we derive sufficient conditions for approximate controllability of our system in separable reflexive Banach spaces via linear evolution operator, resolvent operator conditions, and Schauder's fixed point theorem. Moreover, in this paper, we define proper identification of resolven…
This article is devoted to studying the null controllability of evolution equations with memory terms. The problem is challenging not only because the state equation contains memory terms but also because the classical controllability requirement at the final time has to be reinforced, involving the contribution of the memory term, to ensure that the solution reaches the equilibrium. Using duality arguments, the problem is reduced to the obtention of suitable observability estimates for the adjoint system. We first consider finite-dimensional dynamical systems involving memory terms and derive…
In this paper, we consider a non-autonomous nonlinear evolution equation in separable, reflexive Banach spaces. First, we consider a linear problem and establish the approximate controllability results by finding a feedback control with the help of an optimal control problem. We then establish the approximate controllability results for a semilinear differential equation in Banach spaces using the theory of linear evolution systems, properties of resolvent operator and Schauder's fixed point theorem. Finally, we provide an example of a non-autonomous, nonlinear diffusion equation in Banach spa…
We analyze the averaged controllability properties of random evolution Partial Differential Equations. We mainly consider heat and Schrödinger equations with random parameters, although the problem is also formulated in an abstract frame. We show that the averages of parabolic equations lead to parabolic-like dynamics that enjoy the null-controllability properties of solutions of heat equations in an arbitrarily short time and from arbitrary measurable sets of positive measure. In the case of Schrödinger equations we show that, depending on the probability density governing the random paramete…
The current article examines the approximate controllability problem for non-instantaneous impulsive fractional evolution equations of order $1<α<2$ with state-dependent delay in separable reflexive Banach spaces. In order to establish sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of our problem, we first formulate the linear-regulator problem and obtain the optimal control in feedback form. By using this optimal control, we deduce the approximate controllability of the linear fractional control system of order $1<α<2$. Further, we derive sufficient conditions for the approximate c…
The present paper deals with the control problems governed by fractional non-instantaneous impulsive functional evolution equations with state-dependent delay involving Caputo fractional derivatives in Banach spaces. The main objective of this work is to formulate sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of the considered system in separable reflexive Banach spaces. We have exploited the resolvent operator technique and Schauder's fixed point theorem in the proofs to achieve this goal. The approximate controllability of linear system is discussed in detail, which lacks in the …
Inspired in our work on the controllability for the semilinear with memory \cite{Carrasco-Guevara-Leiva:2017aa, Guevara-Leiva:2016aa, Guevara-Leiva:2017aa}, we present the general cases for the approximate controllability of impulsive semilinear evolution equations in a Hilbert space with memory and delay terms which arise from reaction-diffusion models. We prove that, for each initial and an arbitrary neighborhood of a final state, one can steer the system from the initial condition to this neighborhood of the final condition with an appropriated collection of admissible controls thanks to th…
We consider a controlled evolution problem for a set $Ω(t)\in\mathbb{R}^d$, originally motivated by a model where a dog controls a flock of sheep. Necessary conditions and sufficient conditions are given, in order that the evolution be completely controllable. Similar techniques are then applied to the approximation of a sweeping process. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that there exists a control function such that the corresponding evolution of the set $Ω(t)$ is arbitrarily close to the one determined by the sweeping process.
The goal of this article is to present a local exact controllability result for the 2 and 3-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations on a constant target trajectory when the controls act on the whole boundary. Our study is then based on the observability of the adjoint system of some linearized version of the system, which is analyzed thanks to a subsystem for which the coupling terms are somewhat weaker. In this step, we strongly use Carleman estimates in negative Sobolev spaces.

We consider a quantum particle in a 1D interval submitted to a potential. The evolution of this particle is controlled using an external electric field. Taking into account the so-called polarizability term in the model (quadratic with respect to the control), we prove global exact controllability in a suitable space for arbitrary potential and arbitrary dipole moment. This term is relevant both from the mathematical and physical points of view. The proof uses tools from the bilinear setting and a perturbation argument.
In this paper, we are concerned with the approximate controllability results for a class of impulsive functional differential control systems involving time dependent operators in Banach spaces. First, we show the existence of a mild solution for non-autonomous functional impulsive evolution inclusions in separable reflexive Banach spaces with the help of the evolution family and a generalization of the Leray-Schauder fixed point theorem for multi-valued maps. In order to establish sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of our problem, we first consider a linear-quadratic re…
In this work, we investigate the small-time global exact controllability of the Navier-Stokes equation, both towards the null equilibrium state and towards weak trajectories. We consider a viscous incompressible fluid evolving within a smooth bounded domain, either in 2D or in 3D. The controls are only located on a small part of the boundary, intersecting all its connected components. On the remaining parts of the boundary, the fluid obeys a Navier slip-with-friction boundary condition. Even though viscous boundary layers appear near these uncontrolled boundaries, we prove that small-time glob…
This article studies Volterra evolution equations from the point of view of control theory, in the case that the generator of the underlying semigroup has a Riesz basis of eigenvectors. Conditions for admissibility of the system's control operator are given in terms of the Carleson embedding properties of certain discrete measures. Moreover, exact and null controllability are expressed in terms of a new interpolation question for analytic functions, providing a generalization of results known to hold for the standard Cauchy problem. The results are illustrated by examples involving heat conduc…
We consider a network of n spin 1/2 systems which are pairwise interacting via Ising interaction and are controlled by the same electro-magnetic control field. Such a system presents symmetries since the Hamiltonian is unchanged if we permute two spins. This prevents full (operator) controllability in that not every unitary evolution can be obtained. We prove however that controllability is verified if we restrict ourselves to unitary evolutions which preserve the above permutation invariance. For low dimensional cases, n=2 and n=3, we provide an analysis of the Lie group of available evolutio…
Partial differential equation on networks have been widely investigated in the last decades in view of their application to quantum mechanics (Schrödinger type equations) or to the analysis of flexible structures (wave type equations). Nevertheless, very few results are available for diffusive models despite an increasing demand arising from life sciences such as neurobiology. This paper analyzes the controllability properties of the heat equation on a compact network under the action of a single input bilinear control. By adapting a recent method due to [F.~Alabau-Boussouira, P.~Cannarsa and …
In this paper we study the internal exact controllability for a second order linear evolution equation defined in a two-component domain. On the interface we prescribe a jump of the solution proportional to the conormal derivatives, meanwhile a homogeneous Dirichlet condition is imposed on the exterior boundary. Due to the geometry of the domain, we apply controls through two regions which are neighborhoods of a part of the external boundary and of the whole interface, respectively. Our approach to internal exact controllability consists in proving an observability inequality by using the Lagr…
We derive new results regarding the controllability and the reachability of multitime controlled linear PDE systems of first order. These systems describe some important multitime evolution in engineering, economics and biology. Some of them come from evolution PDEs of superior order. The original results include a refinement and a supplement of multitime optimal control theory, developed in some recent papers by the second author. They refer to the complete integrability conditions, conditions for the existence of solutions, path independent curvilinear integrals, the multitime fundamental ma…
We analyse the problem of controllability for parameter-dependent linear finite-dimensional systems. The goal is to identify the most distinguished realisations of those parameters so to better describe or approximate the whole range of controls. We adapt recent results on greedy and weak greedy algorithms for parameter depending PDEs or, more generally, abstract equations in Banach spaces. Our results lead to optimal approximation procedures that, in particular, perform better than simply sampling the parameter-space to compute the controls for each of the parameter values. We apply these res…
In this paper, motivated by the study of optimal control problems for infinite dimensional systems with endpoint state constraints, we introduce the notion of finite codimensional (exact/approximate) controllability. Some equivalent criteria on the finite codimensional controllability are presented. In particular, the finite codimensional exact controllability is reduced to deriving a Gårding type inequality for the adjoint system, which is new for many evolution equations. This inequality can be verified for some concrete problems (and hence applied to the corresponding optimal control proble…
We study the regional controllability problem for delayed fractional control systems through the use of the standard Caputo derivative. First, we recall several fundamental results and introduce the family of fractional-order systems under consideration. Afterwards, we formulate the notion of regional controllability for fractional systems with control delays and give some of their important properties. Our main method consists in defining an attainable set, which allow us to prove exact and weak controllability. Moreover, main results include not only those of controllability but also a power…
The main objective of this paper is to establish the null controllability for the fourth order semilinear parabolic equations with the nonlinearities involving the state and its gradient up to second order. First of all, based on optimal control theory of partial differential equations and global Carleman estimates obtained in \cite{gs} for fourth order parabolic equation with $L^2(Q)$-external force, we establish the global Carleman estimates for the $L^2(Q)$ weak solutions of the same system with a low regularity external term and some linear terms including the derivatives of the state up t…
This paper provides the extension of the observability rank condition and the extension of the controllability rank condition to time-varying nonlinear systems. Previous conditions to check the state observability and controllability, only account for nonlinear systems that do not explicitly depend on time, or, for time-varying systems, they only account for the linear case. In this paper, the general analytic conditions are provided. The paper shows that both these two new conditions (the extended observability rank condition and the extended controllability rank condition) reduce to the well…
We survey some representative results on fuzzy fractional differential equations, controllability, approximate controllability, optimal control, and optimal feedback control for several different kinds of fractional evolution equations. Optimality and relaxation of multiple control problems, described by nonlinear fractional differential equations with nonlocal control conditions in Banach spaces, are considered.
In this paper we study the global approximate multiplicative controllability for nonlinear degenerate parabolic Cauchy problems. In particular, we consider a one-dimensional semilinear degenerate reaction-diffusion equation in divergence form governed via the coefficient of the \-reaction term (bilinear or multiplicative control). The above one-dimensional equation is degenerate since the diffusion coefficient is positive on the interior of the spatial domain and vanishes at the boundary points. Furthermore, two different kinds of degenerate diffusion coefficient are distinguished and studied …
The paper is concerned with the boundary controllability of entropy weak solutions to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. We prove a general result on the asymptotic stabilization of a system near a constant state. On the other hand, we give an example showing that exact controllability in finite time cannot be achieved, in general.
For a symmetric system, we want to study the problem of crossing an hypersurface in the neighborhood of a given point, when we suppose that all of the available vector fields are tangent to the hypersurface at the point. Classically one requires transversality of at least one Lie bracket generated by two available vector fields. However such condition does not take into account neither the geometry of the hypersurface nor the practical fact that in order to realize the direction of a Lie bracket one needs three switches among the vector fields in a short time. We find a new sufficient conditio…
We study the exact controllability of the evolution equation \begin{equation*} u'(t)+Au(t)+p(t)Bu(t)=0 \end{equation*} where $A$ is a nonnegative self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $X$ and $B$ is an unbounded linear operator on $X$, which is dominated by the square root of $A$. The control action is bilinear and only of scalar-input form, meaning that the control is the scalar function $p$, which is assumed to depend only on time. Furthermore, we only consider square-integrable controls. Our main result is the local exact controllability of the above equation to the ground state solution…
