We study the exact controllability of the evolution equation \begin{equation*} u'(t)+Au(t)+p(t)Bu(t)=0 \end{equation*} where $A$ is a nonnegative self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $X$ and $B$ is an unbounded linear operator on $X$, which is dominated by the square root of $A$. The control action is bilinear and only of scalar-input form, meaning that the control is the scalar function $p$, which is assumed to depend only on time. Furthermore, we only consider square-integrable controls. Our main result is the local exact controllability of the above equation to the ground state solution, that is, the evolution through time, of the first eigenfunction of $A$, as initial data.
The analogous problem (in a more general form) was addressed in our previous paper [Exact controllablity to eigensolutions for evolution equations of parabolic type via bilinear control, Alabau-Boussouira F., Cannarsa P. and Urbani C., Nonlinear Diff. Eq. Appl. (2022)] for a bounded operator $B$. The current extension to unbounded operators allows for many more applications, including the Fokker-Planck equation in one space dimension, and a larger class of control actions.
In this work, we study the bilinear optimal stabilization of a non-homogeneous Fokker-Planck equation. We first study the problem of optimal control in a finite-time interval and then focus on the case of the infinite time horizon. We further show that the obtained optimal control guarantees the strong stability of the system at hand. An illustrating numerical example is given.
We study input-to-state stability of bilinear control systems with possibly unbounded control operators. Natural sufficient conditions for integral input-to-state stability are given. The obtained results are applied to a bilinearly controlled Fokker-Planck equation.
This work is devoted to the control of the Fokker-Planck equation, posed on a smooth bounded domain of R^d, with a localized drift force. We prove that this equation is locally controllable to regular nonzero trajectories. Moreover, under some conditions, we explain how to reduce the number of controls around the reference control. The results are obtained thanks to a standard linearization method and the fictitious control method. The main novelties are twofold. First, the algebraic solvability is performed and used directly on the adjoint problem. We then prove a new Carleman inequality for …
Using a projection-based decoupling of the Fokker-Planck equation, control strategies that allow to speed up the convergence to the stationary distribution are investigated. By means of an operator theoretic framework for a bilinear control system, two different feedback control laws are proposed. Projected Riccati and Lyapunov equations are derived and properties of the associated solutions are given. The well-posedness of the closed loop systems is shown and local and global stabilization results, respectively, are obtained. An essential tool in the construction of the controls is the choice…
In the present note, we give two examples of bilinear quantum systems showing good agreement between the total variation of the control and the variation of the energy of solutions, with bounded or unbounded coupling term. The corresponding estimates in terms of the total variation of the control appear to be optimal.
A general bilinear optimal control problem subject to an infinite-dimensional state equation is considered. Polynomial approximations of the associated value function are derived around the steady state by repeated formal differentiation of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. The terms of the approximations are described by multilinear forms, which can be obtained as solutions to generalized Lyapunov equations with recursively defined right-hand sides. They form the basis for defining a suboptimal feedback law. The approximation properties of this feedback law are investigated. An applicatio…
This paper presents an energy estimate in terms of the total variation of the control for bilinear infinite dimensional quantum systems with unbounded potentials. These estimates allow a rigorous construction of propagators associated with controls of bounded variation. Moreover, upper bounds of the error made when replacing the infinite dimensional system by its finite dimensional Galerkin approximations is presented.
We consider linear control systems of the form $\dot{y}(t)=Ay(t)-μB C y(t)$ where $μ$ is a positive real parameter, $A$ is the state operator and generates a linear $C_0-$semigroup of contractions $S(t) $ on a Banach space $X$, $B$ and $C$ are respectively the operators of control and observability, which are defined in appropriate spaces in which they are unbounded in some sense. We aim to show the exponential stability of the above system under sufficient conditions which are expressed in term of admissibility and observability properties. The uniform exponential stabilization using bilinear…
For homogeneous bilinear control systems, the control sets are characterized using a Lie algebra rank condition for the induced systems on projective space. This is based on a classical Diophantine approximation result. For affine control systems, the control sets around the equilibria for constant controls are characterized with particular attention to the question when the control sets are unbounded.
An infinite-dimensional bilinear optimal control problem with infinite-time horizon is considered. The associated value function can be expanded in a Taylor series around the equilibrium, the Taylor series involving multilinear forms which are uniquely characterized by generalized Lyapunov equations. A numerical method for solving these equations is proposed. It is based on a generalization of the balanced truncation model reduction method and some techniques of tensor calculus, in order to attenuate the curse of dimensionality. Polynomial feedback laws are derived from the Taylor expansion an…
In this paper the feasibility of funnel control techniques for the Fokker-Planck equation corresponding to a multi-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process on an unbounded spatial domain is explored. First, using weighted Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces, an auxiliary operator is defined via a suitable sesquilinear form. This operator is then transformed to the desired Fokker-Planck operator. We show that any mild solution of the controlled Fokker-Planck equation (which is a probability density) has a covariance matrix that exponentially converges to a constant matrix. After a simple feedforward cont…

In 1982, Ball, Marsden, and Slemrod proved an obstruction to the controllability of linear dynamics with a bounded bilinear control term. This note presents an example of nonlinear dynamics with respect to the state for which this obstruction still holds while the control potential is not bounded.
The present analysis deals with the regularity of solutions of bilinear control systems of the type $x'=(A+u(t)B)x$where the state $x$ belongs to some complex infinite dimensional Hilbert space, the (possibly unbounded) linear operators $A$ and $B$ are skew-adjoint and the control $u$ is a real valued function. Such systems arise, for instance, in quantum control with the bilinear Schrödinger equation. For the sake of the regularity analysis, we consider a more general framework where $A$ and $B$ are generators of contraction semi-groups.Under some hypotheses on the commutator of the operators…
In this paper we investigate the uniform exponential stability of the system $\frac{dx(t)}{dt}=Ax(t)-ρBx(t), \; (ρ>0), $ where the unbounded operator $A$ is the infinitesimal generator of a linear $C_0-$semigroup of contractions $S(t)$ in a Hilbert space $X$ and $B$ is a Desch-Schappacher operator. Then we give sufficient conditions for exponential stability of the above system. The obtained stability result is then applied to show the uniform exponential stabilization of bilinear partial differential equations.
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on a torus of arbitrary dimension. The equation is studied in presence of an external potential field whose time-dependent amplitude is taken as control. Assuming that the potential satisfies a saturation property, we show that the NLS equation is approximately controllable between any pair of eigenstates in arbitrarily small time. The proof is obtained by developing a multiplicative version of a geometric control approach introduced by Agrachev and Sarychev. We give an application of this result to the study of the large time behavior of th…
We prove approximate controllability of the bilinear Schrödinger equation in the case in which the uncontrolled Hamiltonian has discrete non-resonant spectrum. The results that are obtained apply both to bounded or unbounded domains and to the case in which the control potential is bounded or unbounded. The method relies on finite-dimensional techniques applied to the Galerkin approximations and permits, in addition, to get some controllability properties for the density matrix. Two examples are presented: the harmonic oscillator and the 3D well of potential, both controlled by suitable potent…
We consider a non-resonant system of finitely many bilinear Schroedinger equations with discrete spectrum driven by the same scalar control. We prove that this system can approximately track any given system of trajectories of density matrices, up to the phase of the coordinates. The result is valid both for bounded and unbounded Schroedinger operators. The method used relies on finite-dimensional control techniques applied to Lie groups. We provide also an example showing that no approximate tracking of both modulus and phase is possible
We study the controllability of the Bloch equation, for an ensemble of non interacting half-spins, in a static magnetic field, with dispersion in the Larmor frequency. This system may be seen as a prototype for infinite dimensional bilinear systems with continuous spectrum, whose controllability is not well understood. We provide several mathematical answers, with discrimination between approximate and exact controllability, and between finite time or infinite time controllability: this system is not exactly controllable in finite time $T$ with bounded controls in $L^2(0,T)$, but it is approxi…
