We prove approximate controllability of the bilinear Schrödinger equation in the case in which the uncontrolled Hamiltonian has discrete non-resonant spectrum. The results that are obtained apply both to bounded or unbounded domains and to the case in which the control potential is bounded or unbounded. The method relies on finite-dimensional techniques applied to the Galerkin approximations and permits, in addition, to get some controllability properties for the density matrix. Two examples are presented: the harmonic oscillator and the 3D well of potential, both controlled by suitable potentials.
We prove global internal controllability in large time for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on a bounded interval with periodic, Dirichlet or Neumann conditions. Our strategy combines stabilization and local controllability near 0. We use Bourgain spaces to prove this result on L2. We also get a regularity result about the control if the data are assumed smoother.
In this paper, we study the controllability of a Schrödinger equation with mixed boundary conditions on disjoint subsets of the boundary: dynamic boundary condition of Wentzell type, and Dirichlet boundary condition. The main result of this article is given by new Carleman estimates for the associated adjoint system, where the weight function is constructed specially adapted to the geometry of the domain. Using these estimates, we prove the exact controllability of the system with a boundary control acting only in the part of the boundary where the Dirichlet condition is imposed. Also, we obta…
In this paper, we study the exact boundary controllability of the linear fourth-order Schrödinger equation, with variable physical parameters and clamped boundary conditions on a bounded interval. The control acts on the first spatial derivative at the left endpoint. We prove that this control system is exactly controllable at any time $T>0$. The proofs are based on a detailed spectral analysis and on the use of nonharmonic Fourier series.
We consider a system of an arbitrary number of \textsc{1d} linear Schrödinger equations on a bounded interval with bilinear control. We prove global exact controllability in large time of these $N$ equations with a single control. This result is valid for an arbitrary potential with generic assumptions on the dipole moment of the considered particle. Thus, even in the case of a single particle, this result extends the available literature. The proof combines local exact controllability around finite sums of eigenstates, proved with Coron's return method, a global approximate controllability pr…
This analysis is concerned with the controllability of quantum systems in the case where the standard dipolar approximation, involving the permanent dipole moment of the system, is corrected with a polarizability term, involving the field induced dipole moment. Sufficient conditions for approximate controllability are given. For transfers between eigenstates of the free Hamiltonian, the control laws are explicitly given. The results apply also for unbounded or non-regular potentials.
In this paper, we study, in the semiclassical sense, the global approximate controllability in small time of the quantum density and quantum momentum of the 1-D semiclassical cubic Schrödinger equation with two controls between two states with positive quantum densities. We first control the asymptotic expansions of the zeroth and first order of the physical observables via Agrachev-Sarychev's method. Then we conclude the proof through techniques of semiclassical approximation of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
This note presents a sufficient condition for partial approximate ensemble controllability of a set of bilinear conservative quantum systems in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The proof relies on classical geometric and averaging control techniques applied on finite dimensional approximation of the infinite dimensional system. The results are illustrated with the planar rotation of a linear molecule.
The goal of this work is to prove global controllability and stabilization properties for the fractional Schrödinger equation on $d$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary $(M,g)$. To prove our main results we use techniques of pseudo-differential calculus on manifolds. More precisely, by using microlocal analysis, we are able to prove propagation of regularity which together with the so-called Geometric Control Condition and Unique Continuation Property help us to prove global control results for the system under consideration. As a main novelty this manuscript presents the…
In [15] we proposed a set of sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of a discrete-spectrum bilinear Schrödinger equation. These conditions are expressed in terms of the controlled potential and of the eigenpairs of the uncontrolled Schrödinger operator. The aim of this paper is to show that these conditions are generic with respect to the uncontrolled and the controlled potential, denoted respectively by $V$ and $W$. More precisely, we prove that the Schrödinger equation is approximately controllable generically with respect to $W$ when $V$ is fixed and also generically with…
In this paper, we study the exact boundary controllability of the linear Biharmonic Schrödinger equation $i\partial_ty=-\partial_x^4y+ γ\partial_x^2y$ on a bounded domain with hinged boundary conditions and boundary control acts on the second spatial derivative at the {left} endpoint, where the parameter $γ<0$. We prove that this system is exactly controllable in time $T>0$, if and only if, the parameter $γ$ does not belong to a critical countable set of negative real numbers. The analysis in this work is based on spectral analysis together with the nonharmonic Fourier series method.
We prove global internal controllability in large time for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on some compact manifolds of dimension 3. The result is proved under some geometrical assumptions : geometric control and unique continuation. We give some examples where they are fulfilled on $\Tot$, $S^3$ and $S^2\times S^1$. We prove this by two different methods both inherently interesting. The first one combines stabilization and local controllability near 0. The second one uses successive controls near some trajectories. We also get a regularity result about the control if the data are assumed s…
We consider a quantum particle in a 1D interval submitted to a potential. The evolution of this particle is controlled using an external electric field. Taking into account the so-called polarizability term in the model (quadratic with respect to the control), we prove global exact controllability in a suitable space for arbitrary potential and arbitrary dipole moment. This term is relevant both from the mathematical and physical points of view. The proof uses tools from the bilinear setting and a perturbation argument.
We derive in a direct way the exact controllability of the 1D free Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary control. We use the so-called flatness approach, which consists in parametrizing the solution and the control by the derivatives of a "flat output". This provides an explicit and very regular control achieving the exact controllability in the energy space.
We show the approximate rotational controllability of a polar linear molecule by means of three nonresonant linear polarized laser fields. The result is based on a general approximate controllability result for the bilinear Schrödinger equation, with wavefunction varying in the unit sphere of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and with several control potentials, under the assumption that the internal Hamiltonian has discrete spectrum.
We consider a controlled Schrödinger equation with a dipolar and a polarizability term, used when the dipolar approximation is not valid. The control is the amplitude of the external electric field, it acts non linearly on the state. We extend in this infinite dimensional framework previous techniques used by Coron, Grigoriu, Lefter and Turinici for stabilization in finite dimension. We consider a highly oscillating control and prove the semi-global weak $H^2$ stabilization of the averaged system using a Lyapunov function introduced by Nersesyan. Then it is proved that the solutions of the Sch…
This paper is addressed to studying the exact controllability for stochastic Schrödinger equations by two controls. One is a boundary control in the drift term and the other is an internal control in the diffusion term. By means of the standard duality argument, the control problem is converted into an observability problem for backward stochastic Schrödinger equations, and the desired observability estimate is obtained by a global Carleman estimate. At last, we give a result about the lack of exact controllability, which shows that the action of two controls is necessary.
We derive in a straightforward way the exact controllability of the 1-D Schrodinger equation with a Dirichlet boundary control. We use the so-called flatness approach, which consists in parameterizing the solution and the control by the derivatives of a "flat output". This provides an explicit control input achieving the exact controllability in the energy space. As an application, we derive an explicit pair of control inputs achieving the exact steering to zero for a simply-supported beam.
We consider a linear Schrödinger equation, on a bounded interval, with bilinear control, that represents a quantum particle in an electric field (the control). We prove the controllability of this system, in any positive time, locally around the ground state. Similar results were proved for particular models (by the first author and with J.M. Coron), in non optimal spaces, in long time and the proof relied on the Nash-Moser implicit function theorem in order to deal with an a priori loss of regularity. In this article, the model is more general, the spaces are optimal, there is no restriction …
We consider a linear Schrödinger equation, on a bounded interval, with bilinear control. Beauchard and Laurent proved that, under an appropriate non degeneracy assumption, this system is controllable, locally around the ground state, in arbitrary time. Coron proved that a positive minimal time is required for this controllability, on a particular degenerate example. In this article, we propose a general context for the local controllability to hold in large time, but not in small time. The existence of a positive minimal time is closely related to the behaviour of the second order term, in the…
We present a sufficient condition for approximate controllability of the bilinear discrete-spectrum Schrödinger equation exploiting the use of several controls. The controllability result extends to simultaneous controllability, approximate controllability in $H^s$, and tracking in modulus. The result is more general than those present in the literature even in the case of one control and permits to treat situations in which the spectrum of the uncontrolled operator is very degenerate (e.g. it has multiple eigenvalues or equal gaps among different pairs of eigenvalues). We apply the general re…

The aim of this work is to study the controllability of infinite bilinear Schrödinger equations on a segment. We consider the equations (BSE) $i\partial_tψ^{j}=-Δψ^j+u(t)Bψ^j$ in the Hilbert space $L^2((0,1),\mathbb{C})$ for every $j\in\mathbb{N}^*$. The Laplacian $-Δ$ is equipped with Dirichlet homogeneous boundary conditions, $B$ is a bounded symmetric operator and $u\in L^2((0,T),\mathbb{R})$ with $T>0$. We prove the simultaneous local and global exact controllability of infinite (BSE) in projection. The local controllability is guaranteed for any positive time and we provide explicit examp…
We consider N independent quantum particles, in an infinite square potential well coupled to an external laser field. These particles are modelled by a system of linear Schrödinger equations on a bounded interval. This is a bilinear control system in which the state is the N-tuple of wave functions. The control is the real amplitude of the laser field. For N=1, Beauchard and Laurent proved local exact controllability around the ground state in arbitrary time. We prove, under an extra generic assumption, that their result does not hold in small time if N is greater or equal than 2. Still, for N…
In [14] Duca and Nersesyan proved a small-time controllability property of nonlinear Schrödinger equations on a d-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. In this paper we study a similar property, in the linear setting, starting from a closed Riemannian manifold. We then focus on the 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$, which models the bilinear control of a rotating linear top: as a corollary, we obtain the approximate controllability in arbitrarily small times among particular eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of $S^2$.
The main purpose of this paper is to show the global stabilization and exact controllability properties for a fourth order nonlinear fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger system: $$i\partial_tu +\partial_x^2u-\partial_x^4u=λ|u|^2u,$$ on a periodic domain $\mathbb{T}$ with internal control supported on an arbitrary sub-domain of $\mathbb{T}$. More precisely, by certain properties of propagation of compactness and regularity in Bourgain spaces, for the solutions of the associated linear system, we show that the system is globally exponentially stabilizable. This property together with the local exa…
We prove the approximate controllability of a bilinear Schrödinger equation modelling a two trapped ions system. A new spectral decoupling technique is introduced, which allows to analyze the controllability of the infinite-dimensional system through finite-dimensional considerations.
We analyze the averaged controllability properties of random evolution Partial Differential Equations. We mainly consider heat and Schrödinger equations with random parameters, although the problem is also formulated in an abstract frame. We show that the averages of parabolic equations lead to parabolic-like dynamics that enjoy the null-controllability properties of solutions of heat equations in an arbitrarily short time and from arbitrary measurable sets of positive measure. In the case of Schrödinger equations we show that, depending on the probability density governing the random paramete…
The aim of this work is to study the controllability of the Schrödinger equation \begin{equation}\label{eq_abstract} i\partial_t u(t)=-Δu(t)~~~~~\text{ on }Ω(t) \tag{$\ast$} \end{equation} with Dirichlet boundary conditions, where $Ω(t)\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a time-varying domain. We prove the global approximate controllability of \eqref{eq_abstract} in $L^2(Ω)$, via an adiabatic deformation $Ω(t)\subset\mathbb{R}$ ($t\in[0,T]$) such that $Ω(0)=Ω(T)=Ω$. This control is strongly based on the Hamiltonian structure of \eqref{eq_abstract} provided by [18], which enables the use of adiabatic motio…
We consider the observability problem for non-autonomous evolution systems (i.e., the operators governing the system depend on time). We introduce an averaged Hautus condition and prove that for skew-adjoint operators it characterizes exact observability. Next, we extend this to more general class of operators under a growth condition on the associated evolution family. We give an application to the Schrödinger equation with time dependent potential and the damped wave equation with a time dependent damping coefficient.
We investigate the controllability of quantum electrons trapped in a two-dimensional device, typically a MOS field-effect transistor. The problem is modeled by the Schrödinger equation in a bounded domain coupled to the Poisson equation for the electrical potential. The controller acts on the system through the boundary condition on the potential, on a part of the boundary modeling the gate. We prove that, generically with respect to the shape of the domain and boundary conditions on the gate, the device is controllable. We also consider control properties of a more realistic nonlinear version…
We consider the null-controllability problem for the generalized Baouendi-Grushin equation $(\partial_t - \partial_x^2 - q(x)^2\partial_y^2)f = 1_ωu$ on a rectangular domain. Sharp controllability results already exist when the control domain $ω$ is a vertical strip, or when $q(x) = x$. In this article, we provide upper and lower bounds for the minimal time of null-controllability for general $q$ and non-rectangular control region $ω$. In some geometries for $ω$, the upper bound and the lower bound are equal, in which case, we know the exact value of the minimal time of null-controllability. O…
Treatises on vibrations devote large space to study the dynamical behavior of an elastic system subject to known external tractions. In fact, usually a "system" is not an isolated body but it is part of a chain of mechanisms which disturb the "system" for example due to the periodic rotation of shafts. This kind of problem has been rarely studied in control theory. In the specific case we shall study, the case of a viscoelastic string, the effect of such external action is on the horizontal component of the traction, and so it affects the coefficients of the corresponding wave type equation, w…
We consider the control problem of the heat equation on bounded and unbounded domains, and more generally the corresponding inhomogeneous equation for the Schrödinger semigroup. We show that if the sequence of null-controls associated to an exhaustion of an unbounded domain converges, then the solutions do in the same way, and that the control cost estimate carries over to the limiting problem on the unbounded domain. This allows to infer the controllability on unbounded domains by studying the control problem on a sequence of bounded domains.
Partial differential equation on networks have been widely investigated in the last decades in view of their application to quantum mechanics (Schrödinger type equations) or to the analysis of flexible structures (wave type equations). Nevertheless, very few results are available for diffusive models despite an increasing demand arising from life sciences such as neurobiology. This paper analyzes the controllability properties of the heat equation on a compact network under the action of a single input bilinear control. By adapting a recent method due to [F.~Alabau-Boussouira, P.~Cannarsa and …
We survey recent results on the control problem for the heat equation on unbounded and large bounded domains. First we formulate new uncertainty relations, respectively spectral inequalities. Then we present an abstract control cost estimate which improves upon earlier results. It is particularly interesting when combined with the earlier mentioned spectral inequalities since it yields sharp control cost bounds in several asymptotic regimes. We also show that control problems on unbounded domains can be approximated by corresponding problems on a sequence of bounded domains forming an exhausti…
This paper is addressed to a study of the null controllability for the semilinear parabolic equation with a complex principal part. For this purpose, we establish a key weighted identity for partial differential operators $(\a+i\b)\pa_t+\sum\limits_{j,k=1}^n\pa_k(a^{jk}\pa_j)$ (with real functions $\a$ and $\b$), by which we develop a universal approach, based on global Carleman estimate, to deduce not only the desired explicit observability estimate for the linearized complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, but also all the known controllability/observability results for the parabolic, hyperbolic, …
In this paper we treat controllability properties for the linear Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation on a network with two types of boundary conditions. More precisely, the equation is considered on a star-shaped tree with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. By using the moment theory we can derive null-controllability properties with boundary controls acting on the external vertices of the tree. In particular, the controllability holds if the anti-diffusion parameter of the involved equation does not belong to a critical countable set of real numbers. We point out that the critical set for w…
The aim of this paper is to perform a Stackelberg strategy to control parabolic equations. We have one control, \textit{the leader}, that is responsible for a null controllability property; additionally, we have a control \textit{the follower} that solves a robust control objective. That means, that we seek for a saddle point of a cost functional. In this way, the follower control is not sensitive to a broad class of external disturbances. As far as we know, the idea of combining robustness with a Stackelberg strategy is new in literature
The paper is devoted to studying controllability properties for 3D Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain. We establish a sufficient condition under which the problem in question is exactly controllable in any finite-dimensional projection. Our sufficient condition is verified for any torus in $R^3$. The proofs are based on a development of a general approach introduced by Agrachev and Sarychev in the 2D case. As a simple consequence of the result on controllability, we show that the Cauchy problem for the 3D Navier-Stokes system has a unique strong solution for any initial function and a…
The main objective of this paper is to establish the null controllability for the fourth order semilinear parabolic equations with the nonlinearities involving the state and its gradient up to second order. First of all, based on optimal control theory of partial differential equations and global Carleman estimates obtained in \cite{gs} for fourth order parabolic equation with $L^2(Q)$-external force, we establish the global Carleman estimates for the $L^2(Q)$ weak solutions of the same system with a low regularity external term and some linear terms including the derivatives of the state up t…
- In this paper, we focus on a variant of a 3-link magnetic microswimmer which consists of three rigid magnetized segments connected by two torsional springs. In particular, we assume that one of the springs is twisted so that the swimmer is not aligned at rest. By acting on it with an external magnetic field, the swimmer twists and moves through the surrounding fluid. By considering the external magnetic field as a control function, we state a local partial controllability result around the equilibrium states. Then, we propose a constructive method to find the magnetic field that allows the s…
