We show how to construct semi-invariants and integrals of the full symmetric sl(n) Toda lattice for all n. Using the Toda equations for the Lax eigenvector matrix we prove the existence of semi-invariants which are homogeneous coordinates in the corresponding projective spaces. Then we use these semi-invariants to construct the integrals. The existence of additional integrals which constitute a full set of independent non-involutive integrals was known but the chopping and Kostant procedures have crucial computational complexities already for low-rank Lax matrices and are practically not applicable for higher ranks. Our new approach solves this problem and results in simple explicit formulae for the full set of independent semi-invariants and integrals expressed in terms of the Lax matrix and its eigenvectors, and of eigenvalue matrices for the full symmetric sl(n) Toda lattice.
The expression of the large $N$ Harish Chandra--Itzykson--Zuber (HCIZ) integral in terms of the moments of the two matrices is investigated using an auxiliary unitary two-matrix model, the associated biorthogonal polynomials and integrable hierarchy. We find that the large $N$ HCIZ integral is governed by the dispersionless Toda lattice hierarchy and derive its string equation. We use this to obtain various exact results on its expansion in powers of the moments.
Characteristic integrals of Toda field theories associated to simple Lie algebras are presented in the most explicit forms, both in terms of the formulas and in terms of the proofs.
We construct a certain reduction of the 2D Toda hierarchy and obtain a tau-symmetric Hamiltonian integrable hierarchy. This reduced integrable hierarchy controls the linear Hodge integrals in the way that one part of its flows yields the intermediate long wave hierarchy, and the remaining flows coincide with a certain limit of the flows of the fractional Volterra hierarchy which controls the special cubic Hodge integrals.
We consider the full symmetric version of the Lax operator of the Toda lattice which is known as the full symmetric Toda lattice. The phase space of this system is the generic orbit of the coadjoint action of the Borel subgroup B^+(n) of SL(n,R). This system is integrable. We propose a new method of constructing semi-invariants and integrals of the full symmetric Toda lattice. Using only the Toda equations for the Lax eigenvector matrix we prove the existence of the semi-invariants which are Plucker coordinates in the corresponding projective spaces. Then we use these semi-invariants to constr…
Integral representation for the eigenfunctions of quantum periodic Toda chain is constructed for N-particle case. The multiple integral is calculated using the Cauchy residue formula. This gives the representation which reproduces the particular results obtained by Gutzwiller for N=2,3 and 4-particle chain. Our method to solve the problem combines the ideas of Gutzwiller and R-matrix approach of Sklyanin with the classical results in the theory of the Whittaker functions. In particular, we calculate Sklyanin's invariant scalar product from the Plancherel formula for the Whittaker functions der…
Integrable cut-off constraints for semidiscrete Toda lattice are studied in this paper. Lax presentation for semidiscrete analog of the $C$-series Toda lattice is obtained. Nonlocal variables that allow to express symmetries of the infinite semidiscrete lattice are introduced and cut-off constraints or a certain type compatible with symmetries of the infinite lattice are classified.
In previous work the author found solutions to the Toda equations that were expressed in terms of determinants of integral operators. Here it is observed that a simple variant yields solutions to the matrix Toda equations. As an application another derivation is given of a differential equation of Sato, Miwa and Jimbo for a particular Fredholm determinant.
Matrix Fourier-like integrals over the classical groups O_+(n), O_-(n), Sp(n) and U(n) are connected with the distribution of the length of the longest increasing sequence in random permutations and random involutions and the spectrum of random matrices. One of the purposes of this paper is to show that all those integrals satisfy the Painlevé V equation with specific initial conditions. In this work, we present both, new results and known ones, in a unified way. Our method consists of inserting one set of time variables t=(t_1,t_2,...) in the integrals for the real compact groups and two sets…
In this paper we continue our study of the geometric properties of full symmetric Toda systems from \cite{CSS14,CSS17,CSS19}. Namely we describe here a simple geometric construction of a commutative family of vector fields on compact groups, that include the Toda vector field, i.e. the field, which generates the full symmetric Toda system associated with the Cartan decomposition of a semisimple Lie algebra. Our construction makes use of the representations of the semisimple algebra and does not depend on the splitness of the Cartan pair. It is very close to the family of invariants and semiinv…
We present an explicit formula for integrals of the open 2D Toda lattice of type $A_n$. This formula is applicable for various reductions of this lattice. To illustrate the concept we find integrals of the Toda $G_2$ lattice. We also reveal a connection between the open Toda $A_n$ and Shabat-Yamilov lattices.
The direct linearisation framework is presented for the two-dimensional Toda equations associated with the infinite-dimensional Lie algebras $A_\infty$, $B_\infty$ and $C_\infty$, as well as the Kac--Moody algebras $A_{r}^{(1)}$, $A_{2r}^{(2)}$, $C_{r}^{(1)}$ and $D_{r+1}^{(2)}$ for arbitrary integers $r\in\mathbb{Z}^+$, from the aspect of a set of linear integral equations in a certain form. Such a scheme not only provides a unified perspective to understand the underlying integrability structure, but also induces the direct linearising type solution potentially leading to the universal solut…
In this contribution, we give an integral representation of the wave functions of the quantum N-particle Toda chain with boundary interaction. In the case of the Toda chain with one-boundary interaction, we obtain the wave function by an integral transformation from the wave functions of the open Toda chain. The kernel of this transformation is given explicitly in terms of Γ-functions. The wave function of the Toda chain with two-boundary interaction is obtained from the previous wave functions by an integral transformation. In this case, the difference equation for the kernel of the integral …
This paper establishes three relations between the Toda field theory associated to a simple Lie algebra and the integral curves of the standard differential system on the corresponding complete flag variety. The motivation comes from the viewpoint on the Toda field theories as Darboux integrable differential systems as developed in \cite{AFV}. First, we establish an isomorphism concerning regular functions on the jet space and on the unipotent subgroup in the setting of a simple Lie group. Using this result, we then show that in the sense of differential systems, after restricting one independ…
We construct the classical W-algebras for some non-abelian Toda systems associated with the Lie groups GL(2n,R) and Sp(n,R). We start with the set of characteristic integrals and find the Poisson brackets for the corresponding Hamiltonian counterparts. The convenient block matrix representation for the Toda equations is used. The infinitesimal symmetry transformations generated by the elements of the W-algebras are presented.
We construct a basis of solutions of the scalar $\boldsymbol{ \texttt{t} }- \boldsymbol{ \texttt{Q} }$ equation describing the spectrum of the $q$-Toda and Toda$_2$ chains by using auxiliary non-linear integral equations. Our construction allows us to provide quantisation conditions for the spectra of these models in the form of thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz-like equations.
We study the Pfaff lattice, introduced by us in the context of a Lie algebra splitting of gl(infinity) into sp(infinity) and lower-triangular matrices. We establish a set of bilinear identities, which we show to be equivalent to the Pfaff Lattice. In the semi-infinite case, the tau-functions are Pfaffians; interesting examples are the matrix integrals over symmetric matrices (symmetric matrix integrals) and matrix integrals over self-dual quaternionic Hermitean matrices (symplectic matrix integrals). There is a striking parallel of the Pfaff lattice with the Toda lattice, and more so, there is…
We construct integrable discrete nonautonomous quad-equations as Bäcklund auto-transformations for known Volterra and Toda type semidiscrete equations, some of which are also nonautonomous. Additional examples of this kind are found by using transformations of discrete equations which are invertible on their solutions. In this way we obtain integrable examples of different types: discrete analogs of the sine-Gordon equation, the Liouville equation and the dressing chain of Shabat. For Liouville type equations we construct general solutions, using a specific linearization. For sine-Gordon type …
There are well-known constructions of integrable systems which are chains of infinitely many copies of the equations of the KP hierarchy ``glued'' together with some additional variables, e.g., the modified KP hierarchy. Another interpretation of the latter, in terms of infinite matrices, is called the 1-Toda lattice hierarchy. One way infinite reduction of this hierarchy has all solutions in the form of sequences of expanding Wronskians. We define another chain of the KP equations, also with solutions of the Wronsksian type, which is characterized by the property to stabilize with respect to …
A set of coupled non-linear integral equations is derived for a class of models connected with the quantum group $U_q(\hat g)$ ($g$ simply laced Lie algebra), which are solvable using the Bethe Ansatz; these equations describe arbitrary excited states of a system with finite spatial length $L$. They generalize the Destri-De Vega equation for the Sine-Gordon/massive Thirring model to affine Toda field theory with imaginary coupling constant. As an application, the central charge and all the conformal weights of the UV conformal field theory are extracted in a straightforward manner. The quantum…
We study the affine $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ Toda fields with boundary reflection. Our approach is based on the free field approach. We construct free field realizations of the boundary state and its dual. For an application of these realizations, we present integral representations for the form factors of the local operators. In a limiting case $ρ\to \infty$, our integral representations reproduce those of form factors for the SU(n) invariant massive Thirring model with boundary reflection [nlin.SI/0010020,Int.J.Mod.Phys.A16,no.15 (2001)2665-2689].
This paper mainly talks about the Cauchy two-matrix model and its corresponding integrable hi- erarchy with the help of orthogonal polynomials theory and Toda-type equations. Starting from the symmetric reduction of Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials, we derive the Toda equation of CKP type (or the C-Toda lattice) as well as its Lax pair by introducing time flows. Then, matrix integral solutions to the C-Toda lattice are extended to give solutions to the CKP hierarchy which reveals the time-dependent partition function of the Cauchy two-matrix model is nothing but the τ-function of the CKP hiearc…
A tau function of the 2D Toda hierarchy can be obtained from a generating function of the two-partition cubic Hodge integrals. The associated Lax operators turn out to satisfy an algebraic relation. This algebraic relation can be used to identify a reduced system of the 2D Toda hierarchy that emerges when the parameter $τ$ of the cubic Hodge integrals takes a special value. Integrable hierarchies of the Volterra type are shown to be such reduced systems. They can be derived for positive rational values of $τ$. In particular, the discrete series $τ= 1,2,\ldots$ correspond to the Volterra lattic…
We present a variational theory of integrable differential-difference equations (semi-discrete integrable systems). This is a natural extension of the ideas known by the names "Lagrangian multiforms" and "Pluri-Lagrangian systems", which have previously been established in both the fully discrete and fully continuous cases. The main feature of these ideas is to capture a hierarchy of commuting equations in a single variational principle. Our main example to illustrate the new semi-discrete theory of Lagrangian multiforms is the Toda lattice. This ODE describes the evolution in continuous time …
In 1967, Japanese physicist Morikazu Toda published a pair of seminal papers in the Journal of the Physical Society of Japan that exhibited soliton solutions to a chain of particles with nonlinear interactions between nearest neighbors. In the fifty years that followed, Toda's system of particles has been generalized in different directions, each with its own analytic, geometric, and topological characteristics. These are known collectively as the Toda lattice. This survey recounts and compares the various versions of the finite nonperiodic Toda lattice from the perspective of their geometry a…
A noncommutative version of the semi-discrete Toda equation is considered. A Lax pair and its Darboux transformations and binary Darboux transformations are found and they are used to construct two families of quasideterminant solutions.

The Cholesky factorization of the moment matrix is applied to discrete orthogonal polynomials on the homogeneous lattice. In particular, semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials, which are built in terms of a discrete Pearson equation, are studied. The Laguerre-Freud structure semi-infinite matrix that models the shifts by $\pm 1$ in the independent variable of the set of orthogonal polynomials is introduced. In the semiclassical case it is proven that this Laguerre-Freud matrix is banded. From the well known fact that moments of the semiclassical weights are logarithmic derivatives of ge…
The superintegrability of the non-periodic Toda lattice is explained in the framework of systems written in action-angles coordinates. Moreover, a simpler form of the first integrals is given.
In this paper we propose a new algorithm for obtaining the rational integrals of the full Kostant-Toda lattice. This new approach is based on a reduction of a bi-Hamiltonian system on gl(n,R). This system was obtained by reducing the space of maps from Z_n to GL(n,R) endowed with a structure of a pair of Lie-algebroids.
It is shown that the factorization relation on simple Lie groups with standard Poisson Lie structure restricted to Coxeter symplectic leaves gives an integrable dynamical system. This system can be regarded as a discretization of the Toda flow. In case of $SL_n$ the integrals of the factorization dynamics are integrals of the relativistic Toda system. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to the study of symplectic leaves in simple complex Lie groups, its Borel subgroups and their doubles.

We study limiting cases of the two known integrable chiral-type models with tree-dimensional configuration space. One of the initial models is the non-Abelian Toda $A_2^{(1)}$ model and the other was found by means of the symmetry approach by A.G. Meshkov and one of the authors. The C-integrability of the reduced models is established by constructing their complete sets of integrals and general solutions. A description of the generalized symmetry algebras of these models is given in terms of operators mapping integrals into symmetries. The integrals of the Liouville-type systems are known to d…
A multi-linear variable separation approach is developed to solve a differential-difference Toda equation. The semi-discrete form of the continuous universal formula is found for a suitable potential of the differential-difference Toda system. Abundant semi-discrete localized coherent structures of the potential can be found by appropriately selecting the arbitrary functions of the semi-discrete form of the universal formula.
In this short note we show that the Bruhat cells in real normal forms of semisimple Lie algebras enjoy the same property as their complex analogs: for any two elements $w$, $w'$ in the Weyl group $W(\mathfrak g)$, the corresponding real Bruhat cell $X_w$ intersects with the dual Bruhat cell $Y_{w'}$ iff $w\prec w'$ in the Bruhat order on $W(\mathfrak g)$. Here $\mathfrak g$ is a normal real form of a semisimple complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak g_\mathbb C$. Our reasoning is based on the properties of the Toda flows rather than on the analysis of the Weyl group action and geometric considerations…
We use momentum mappings on generalized flag manifolds and their momentum polytopes to study the geometry of the level sets of the 1-chop integrals of the full Kostant-Toda lattice in certain isospectral submanifolds of the phase space. We derive expressions for these integrals in terms of Plücker coordinates on the flag manifold in the case that all eigenvalues are zero and compare the geometry of the base locus of their level set varieties with the corresponding geometry for distinct eigenvalues. Finally, we illustrate and extend our results in the context of the full sl(3,C) and sl(4,C) Kos…
An infinite class of fermionic flows of the N=(1|1) superconformal Toda lattice hierarchy is constructed and their algebraic structure is studied. We completely solve the semi-infinite N=(1|1) Toda lattice and chain hierarchies and derive their tau functions, which may be relevant for building supersymmetric matrix models. Their bosonic limit is also discussed.
This paper concerns the topology of isospectral real manifolds of certain Jacobi elements associated with real split semisimple Lie algebras. The manifolds are related to the compactified level sets of the generalized (nonperiodic) Toda lattice equations defined on the semisimple Lie algebras. We then give a cellular decomposition and the associated chain complex of the manifold by introducing colored Dynkin diagrams which parametrize the cells in the decomposition. We also discuss the Morse chain complex of the manifold.
We apply an analogue of the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method to obtain infinite matrix solutions to the Toda lattice hierarchy. Using an operator transformation we convert some of these into solutions in terms of integral operators and Fredholm determinants. Others are converted into a class of operator solutions to the $l$-periodic Toda hierarchy.
A connection between matrix orthogonal polynomials and non-abelian integrable lattices is investigated in this paper. The normalization factors of matrix orthogonal polynomials expressed by quasi-determinant are shown to be solutions of non-abelian Toda lattice in semi-discrete and full-discrete cases. Moreover, with a moment modification method, we demonstrate that the Bäcklund transformation of non-abelian Toda given by Popowicz is equivalent to the non-abelian Volterra lattice, whose solutions could be expressed by quasi-determinants as well.
A new Poisson structure on a subspace of the Kupershmidt algebra is defined. This Poisson structure, together with other two already known, allows to construct a trihamiltonian recurrence for an extension of the periodic Toda lattice with $n$ particles. Some explicit examples of the construction and of the first integrals found in this way are given.
In 1967, Japanese physicist Morikazu Toda published the seminal papers exhibiting soliton solutions to a chain of particles with nonlinear interactions between nearest neighbors. In the decades that followed, Toda's system of particles has been generalized in different directions, each with its own analytic, geometric, and topological characteristics that sets it apart from the others. These are known collectively as the Toda lattice. This survey describes and compares several versions of the finite non-periodic Toda lattice from the perspective of their geometry and topology.
Generalizing the graded commutator in superalgebras, we propose a new bracket operation on the space of graded operators with an involution. We study properties of this operation and show that the Lax representation of the two-dimensional N=(1|1) supersymmetric Toda lattice hierarchy can be realized via the generalized bracket operation; this is important in constructing the semiclassical (continuum) limit of this hierarchy. We construct the continuum limit of the N=(1|1) Toda lattice hierarchy, the dispersionless N=(1|1) Toda hierarchy. In this limit, we obtain the Lax representation, with th…
We obtain the collection of symmetric and symplectic matrix integrals and the collection of Pfaffian tau-functions, recently described by Peng and Adler and van Moerbeke, as specific elements in the Spin-group orbit of the vacuum vector of a fermionic Fock space. This fermionic Fock space is the same space as one constructs to obtain the KP and 1-Toda lattice hierarchy.
We construct a replica field theory for a random matrix model with logarithmic confinement [K.A.Muttalib et.al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 471 (1993)]. The corresponding replica partition function is calculated exactly for any size of matrix $N$. We make a color-flavor transformation of the original model and find corresponding Toda lattice equations for the replica partition function in both formulations. The replica partition function in the flavor space is defined by generalized Itzikson-Zuber (IZ) integral over homogeneous factor space of pseudo-unitary supergroups $SU(n\mid M,M)/SU(n\mid M-N,M…
The sets of the integrable lattice equations, which generalize the Toda lattice, are considered. The hierarchies of the first integrals and infinitesimal symmetries are found. The properties of the multi-soliton solutions are discussed.
The paper concerns the topology of an isospectral real smooth manifold for certain Jacobi element associated with real split semisimple Lie algebra. The manifold is identified as a compact, connected completion of the disconnected Cartan subgroup of the corresponding Lie group $\tilde G$ which is a disjoint union of the split Cartan subgroups associated to semisimple portions of Levi factors of all standard parabolic subgroups of $\tilde G$. The manifold is also related to the compactified level sets of a generalized Toda lattice equation defined on the semisimple Lie algebra, which is diffeom…
We consider the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) chain composed by $N \gg 1$ particles and periodic boundary conditions, and endow the phase space with the Gibbs measure at small temperature $β^{-1}$. Given a fixed ${1\leq m \ll N}$, we prove that the first $m$ integrals of motion of the periodic Toda chain are adiabatic invariants of FPUT (namely they are approximately constant along the Hamiltonian flow of the FPUT) for times of order $β$, for initial data in a set of large measure. We also prove that special linear combinations of the harmonic energies are adiabatic invariants of the FPUT on…
We present the first detailed numerical study of the Toda equations in $2+1$ dimensions in the limit of long wavelengths, both for the hyperbolic and elliptic case. We first study the formal dispersionless limit of the Toda equations and solve initial value problems for the resulting system up to the point of gradient catastrophe. It is shown that the break-up of the solution in the hyperbolic case is similar to the shock formation in the Hopf equation, a $1+1$ dimensional singularity. In the elliptic case, it is found that the break-up is given by a cusp as for the semiclassical system of the…
We give an analytic, sufficient condition for the existence of the Backlund transformation between the semiinfinite Toda and Volterra lattices, in the complex case, extending previous results given for the real case.
We use the combinatorics of toric networks and the double affine geometric $R$-matrix to define a three-parameter family of generalizations of the discrete Toda lattice. We construct the integrals of motion and a spectral map for this system. The family of commuting time evolutions arising from the action of the $R$-matrix is explicitly linearized on the Jacobian of the spectral curve. The solution to the initial value problem is constructed using Riemann theta functions.
Differential-difference integrable exponential type systems are studied corresponding to the Cartan matrices of semi-simple or affine Lie algebras. For the systems corresponding to the algebras $A_2$, $B_2$, $C_2$, $G_2$ the complete sets of integrals in both directions are found. For the simple Lie algebras of the classical series $A_N$, $B_N$, $C_N$ and affine algebras of series $D^{(2)}_N$ the corresponding systems are supplied with the Lax representation.
We consider compositions of the transformations of the time variable and canonical transformations of the other coordinates, which map completely integrable system into other completely integrable system. Change of the time gives rise to transformations of the integrals of motion and the Lax pairs, transformations of the corresponding spectral curves and R-matrices. As an example, we consider canonical transformations of the extended phase space for the Toda lattices and the Stackel systems.
