Equations of motion for the D0-brane on AdS_4 x CP^3 superbackground are shown to be classically integrable by extending the argument previously elaborated for the massless superparticle model.
To construct actions for describing superbranes propagating in AdS x S superbackgrounds we propose a coset space realization of these superbackgrounds which results in a short polynomial fermionic dependence (up to the sixth power in Grassmann coordinates) of target superspace supervielbeins and superconnections. Gauge fixing kappa-symmetry in a way compatible with a static brane solution further reduces the fermionic dependence down to the fourth power. Subtleties of consistent gauge fixing worldvolume diffeomorphisms and kappa-symmetry of the superbrane actions are discussed.
By making an appropriate choice for gauge fixing kappa-symmetry we obtain a relatively simple form of the actions for a D=11 superparticle in AdS(4) x S(7)/Z_k, and for a D0-brane, fundamental string and D2-branes in the AdS(4) x CP(3) superbackground. They can be used to study various problems of string theory and the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence, especially in regions of the theory which are not reachable by the OSp(6|4)/U(3) x SO(1,3) supercoset sigma-model. In particular, we present a simple form of the gauge-fixed superstring action in AdS(4) x CP(3) and briefly discuss issues of its T-dualiz…
Massless superparticle model is considered on the OSp(4|6)/(SO(1,3) x U(3)) supercoset manifold and in the AdS_4 x CP^3 superspace. In the former case integrability of the equations of motion is rather obvious, while for the AdS_4 x CP^3 superparticle we prove integrability in the partial kappa-symmetry gauge for which 4 anticommuting coordinates related to the broken conformal supersymmetry are set to zero. This allows us to propose expression for the Lax pair that may encode complete equations of motion for the AdS_4 x CP^3 superparticle.
Supertwistors relevant to $AdS_5\times S^5$ superbackground of IIB supergravity are studied in the framework of the $D=10$ massless superparticle model in the first-order formulation. Product structure of the background suggests using $D=1+4$ Lorentz-harmonic variables to express momentum components tangent to $AdS_5$ and $D=5$ harmonics to express momentum components tangent to $S^5$ that yields eight-supertwistor formulation of the superparticle's Lagrangian. We find incidence relations of the supertwistors with the $AdS_5\times S^5$ superspace coordinates and the set of the quadratic constr…
In this paper we continue the study, initiated in arXiv:1009.3498 and arXiv:1104.1793, of the classical integrability of Green-Schwarz superstrings in AdS(4) x CP(3) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) superbackgrounds whose spectrum contains non-supercoset worldsheet degrees of freedom corresponding to broken supersymmetries in the bulk. We derive an explicit expression, to all orders in the coset fermions and to second order in the non-coset fermions, which extends the supercoset Lax connection in these backgrounds with terms depending on the non-coset fermions. An important property of the obtained fo…
Lax representation is elaborated for the equations of motion of massless superparticle on the AdS_4 x CP^3 superbackground that proves their classical integrability.
We demonstrate how actions for interacting superconformal field theories in (p+1)-dimensions arise as a result of gauge fixing worldvolume diffeomorphisms and fermionic kappa-symmetry in actions for super-p-branes propagating in superbackgrounds of AdS(p+2)xS(D-p-2) geometry. The method of nonlinear realizations and coset spaces is used for getting an explicit form of supervielbeins and superconnections of the AdSxS superbackgrounds, which are required for the construction of the superconformal theories. Subtleties of consistent gauge fixing worldvolume symmetries of the branes are discussed.
It is proved that when 8 fermions associated with the supersymmetries broken by the AdS_4 x CP^3 superbackground are gauged away by using the kappa-symmetry corresponding equations obtained by variation of the AdS_4 x CP^3 superstring action are contained in the set of fermionic equations of the OSp(4|6)/(SO(1,3) x U(3)) sigma-model.
We lift the bosonic AdS_4 x CP^3 solution of type IIA supergravity preserving 24 supersymmetries to a D=10 superspace which has 32 Grassmann-odd directions. The type IIA superspace is obtained from D=11 via dimensional reduction of the coset superspace OSp(8|4)/SO(7) x SO(1,3) by realizing the latter as a Hopf fibration over the former. This construction generalizes to superspace the Hopf fibration of S^7 as a U(1) bundle over CP^3, and is suitable for writing the explicit form of Green-Schwarz-type actions encoding the dynamics of the type IIA string and branes in the AdS_4 x CP^3 superbackgr…
Basing upon experience from performing double-dimensional reduction of the D=11 supermembrane on AdS_4 x S^7 background to Type IIA superstring on AdS_4 x CP^3 we introduce Kaluza-Klein (partial) kappa-symmetry gauge as a vanishing condition of the contribution to the D=11 supervielbein components tangent to D=10 space-time proportional to the differential of the coordinate parametrizing compact 11-th space-time dimension, that is identified with the supermembrane world-volume compact dimension. For AdS_4 x S^7 supermembrane Kaluza-Klein gauge removes half Grassmann coordinates associated with…
We review recent applications of the integrable discrete Hirota dynamics (Y-system) in the context of calculation of the planar AdS/CFT spectrum. We start from the description of solution of Hirota equations by the Backlund method where the requirement of analyticity results in the nested Bethe ansatz equations. Then we discuss applications of the Hirota dynamics for the analysis of the asymptotic limit of long operators in the AdS/CFT Y-system.
This short note is devoted to the study of the integrability of the bosonic string on AdS(5)xS(5) in the uniform light-cone gauge. We construct Lax connection for gauge fixed theory and we argue that it is flat.
We review basic examples of classical string solutions in AdS5xS5. We concentrate on simplest rigid closed string solutions of circular or folded type described by integrable 1-d Neumann system but mention also various generalizations and related open-string solutions.
We review the study of Hopf algebras, classical and quantum R-matrices, infinite-dimensional Yangian symmetries and their representations in the context of integrability for the N=4 vs AdS5xS5 correspondence.
In this article we review the recently discovered asymptotic integrability in the planar N = 4 SYM theory and discuss its breakdown beyond the asymptotic region due to the wrapping interactions. We also discuss novel dynamical tests of the AdS/CFT correspondence one can perform in the special cases when the wrapping interactions may be neglected.
We review the semiclassical analysis of strings in AdS5xS5 with a focus on the relationship to the underlying integrable structures. We discuss the perturbative calculation of energies for strings with large charges, using the folded string spinning in an AdS3 subset of AdS5 as our main example. Furthermore, we review the perturbative light-cone quantization of the string theory and the calculation of the worldsheet S-matrix.
We review the role of integrability in certain aspects of N=4 SYM which go beyond the planar spectrum. In particular, we discuss integrability in relation to non-planar anomalous dimensions, multi-point functions and Maldacena-Wilson loops.
We explore integrability properties of superstring equations of motion in AdS_5 x S^5. We impose light-cone kappa-symmetry and reparametrization gauges and construct a Lax representation for the corresponding Hamiltonian dynamics on subspace of physical superstring degrees of freedom. We present some explicit results for the corresponding conserved charges by consistently reducing the dynamics to AdS_3 x S^3 and AdS_3 x S^1 subsectors containing both bosonic and fermionic fields.
We construct topological Wess-Zumino term for supercoset sigma-models on various AdS(3) backgrounds. For appropriately chosen set of parameters, the sigma-model remains integrable when the Wess-Zumino term is added to the action. Moreover, the conditions for integrability, kappa-symmetry and conformal invariance are equivalent to each other.
We review the computation of scattering amplitudes of planar maximally super-symmetric Yang-Mills at strong coupling. By using the AdS/CFT duality the problem boils down to the computation of the area of certain minimal surfaces on AdS. The integrability of the model can then be efficiently used in order to give an answer for the problem in terms of a set of integral equations.
This review is devoted to the classical integrability of the AdS5xS5 superstring theory. It starts with a reminder of the corresponding action as a coset model. The symmetries of this action are then reviewed. The classical integrability is then considered from the lagrangian and hamiltonian points of view. The second part of this review deals with the gauge fixing of this theory. Finally, some aspects of the pure spinor formulation are also briefly reviewed.
Aspects of the D=4, N=4 superconformal symmetry relevant to the AdS/CFT duality and integrability are reviewed. These include the Lie superalgebra psu(2,2|4), its representations, conformal transformations and correlation functions in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory as well as an illustration of the AdS5xS5 superspace on which the dual string theory is formulated.
One of the main topics in the modern String Theory are the AdS/CFT dualities. Proving such conjectures is extremely difficult since the gauge and string theory perturbative regimes do not overlap. In this perspective, the discovery of infinitely many conserved charges, i.e. the integrability, in the planar AdS/CFT has allowed us to reach immense progresses in understanding and confirming the duality. We review the fundamental concepts and properties of integrability in two-dimensional sigma-models and in the AdS/CFT context. The first part is focused on the AdS_5/CFT_4 duality, especially the …
The aim of the chapter is to introduce in a pedagogical manner the concept of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz designed to calculate the energy levels of finite volume integrable systems and to review how it is applied in the planar AdS/CFT setting.
We ask the question of classical integrability for certain (classes of) supergravity vacua that contain an AdS$_3$ factor arising in massive IIA and IIB theories and realizing various and different amounts of supersymmetry. Our approach is based on a well-established method of analytic non-integrability for Hamiltonian systems. To detect a non-integrable sector we consider a non-trivially wrapped string soliton and study its fluctuations. We answer in the negative for each and every one of the supergravity solutions. That is, of course, modulo very specific limits where the metrics reduce to t…
We review the duality and integrability of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions and IIA superstring theory on the background AdS4xCP3. We introduce both of these models and describe how their degrees of freedom are mapped to excitations of a long-range integrable spin-chain. Finally, we discuss the properties of the Bethe equations, the S-matrix and the algebraic curve that are special to this correspondence and differ from the case of N=4 SYM theory and strings on AdS5xS5.
We review current efficient techniques for the construction of multi-leg and multi-loop on-shell scattering amplitudes in supersymmetric gauge theories. Examples in the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions are included.
We review the role of integrability in the planar spectral problem of four-dimensional superconformal gauge theories besides N=4 SYM. The cases considered include the Leigh-Strassler marginal deformations of N=4 SYM, quiver theories which arise as orbifolds of AdS5xS5 on the dual gravity side, as well as various theories involving open spin chains.
There is a growing amount of evidence that QCD (and four-dimensional gauge theories in general) possess a hidden symmetry which does not exhibit itself as a symmetry of classical Lagrangians but is only revealed on the quantum level. In this review we consider the scale dependence of local gauge invariant operators and high-energy (Regge) behavior of scattering amplitudes to explain that the effective QCD dynamics in both cases is described by completely integrable systems that prove to be related to the celebrated Heisenberg spin chain and its generalizations.
In this contribution we briefly review recent developments in the theory of long-range integrable spin chains. These spin chains constitute a natural generalisation of the well-studied integrable nearest-neighbour chains and are of particular relevance to the integrability in the AdS/CFT correspondence since the dilatation operator in the asymptotic region is conjectured to be a Hamiltonian of an integrable long-range psu spin chain.
We propose a number of modifications to the classical term in the dressing phase for integrable strings in AdS3 x S3 x S3 x S1, and check these against existing perturbative calculations, crossing symmetry, and the semiclassical limit of the Bethe equations. The principal change is that the phase for different masses should start with a term Q_1 Q_2, like the one-loop AdS3 dressing phase, rather than Q_2 Q_3 as for the original AdS5 AFS phase.
Recently, a gauged linear sigma model was proposed by Berkovits and Vafa which can be used to describe the AdS_5xS^5 superstring at finite and zero radius. In this paper we show that the model is classically integrable by constructing its first non-local conserved charge and a superspace Lax "quartet". Quantum conservation of the non-local charge follows easily from superspace rules.
In this paper we continue the investigation of aspects of integrability of the type IIA AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) and AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) superstrings. By constructing a one parameter family of flat connections we prove that the Green-Schwarz string is classically integrable, at least to quadratic order in fermions, without fixing the kappa-symmetry. We then compare the quantum dispersion relation, fixed by integrability up to an unknown interpolating function h(lambda), to explicit one-loop calculations on the string worldsheet. For AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) the spectrum contains heavy, …
We discuss a classical integrability in the type IIB string theory on the AdS_5 x S^5 background. By using the Roiban-Siegel formulation of the superstring on the AdS_5 x S^5, we carefully treat the Wess-Zumino term and the constraint conditions intrinsic to the supersymmetric case, and construct explicitly non-local charges for a hidden infinite-dimensional symmetry. The existence of the symmetry is shown by Bena-Polchinski-Roiban. Then the super Yangian algebra is calculated. We also show the Serre relation ensuring the structure of the Hopf algebra. In addition, the classical integrability …
In this dissertation, we discuss how our understanding of the large-N spectrum of AdS/CFT has been deepened by integrability-based approaches. We begin with a comprehensive review of the integrability of the gauge theory spin-chain and that of the string sigma model. In the light of the AdS/CFT duality, they should be just two ways of describing the same underlying integrability, and it is believed that the unified integrability can be characterised by a set of Bethe ansatz equations which is valid for all values of the 't Hooft coupling. By studying the asymptotic spectrum of the AdS/CFT in t…
We establish a framework for calculating the Hagedorn temperature of AdS5/CFT4 via integrability. Concretely, we derive the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations that yield the Hagedorn temperature of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at any value of the 't Hooft coupling. We solve these equations perturbatively at weak coupling via the associated Y-system, confirming the known results at tree-level and one-loop order as well as deriving the previously unknown two-loop Hagedorn temperature. Finally, we comment on solving the equations at finite coupling.
We present a non-perturbative resummation of the asymptotic strong-coupling expansion for the dressing phase factor of the AdS_5xS^5 string S-matrix. The non-perturbative resummation provides a general form for the coefficients in the weak-coupling expansion, in agreement with crossing symmetry and transcendentality. The ambiguities of the non-perturbative prescription are discussed together with the similarities with the non-perturbative definition of the c=1 matrix model.
We present a set of functional equations defining the anomalous dimensions of arbitrary local single trace operators in planar N=4 SYM theory. It takes the form of a Y-system based on the integrability of the dual superstring sigma-model on the AdS_5xS^5 background. This Y-system passes some very important tests: it incorporates the full asymptotic Bethe ansatz at large length of operator L, including the dressing factor, and it confirms all recently found wrapping corrections. The recently proposed AdS_4/CFT_3 duality is also treated in a similar fashion.
We review the spectral curve for the classical string in AdS5xS5. Classical integrability of the AdS5xS5 string implies the existence of a flat connection, whose monodromies generate an infinite set of conserved charges. The spectral curve is constructed out of the quasi-momenta, which are eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix, and each finite-gap classical solution can be characterized in terms of such a curve. This provides a concise and powerful description of the classical solution space. In addition, semi-classical quantization of the string can be performed in terms of the quasi-momenta. W…
We demonstrate the existence of an infinite number of local commuting charges for classical solutions of the string sigma model on AdS_5 x S^5 associated with a certain circular three-spin solution spinning with large angular momenta in three orthogonal directions on the five-sphere. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we find agreement to one-loop with the tower of conserved higher charges in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory associated with the dual composite single-trace operator in the highest weight representation (J_1,J_2,J_2) of SO(6). The agreement can be explained by the presence of int…
We investigate classical integrability on two recently discovered classes of backgrounds in massive IIA supergravity. These vacua are of the form AdS$_3\times\,$S$^2\times\mathbb{R}\times\,$CY$_2$, they preserve small $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry and are associated with D8$-$D6$-$D4$-$D2 Hanany-Witten brane set-ups. We choose an appropriate string embedding and use differential Galois theory on its associated Hamiltonian system, intending to produce the conditions under which Liouvillian solutions may occur. By constraining the parameters of the system according to the consistency of the …
The one-dimensional Heisenberg XXX spin chain appears in a special limit of the AdS/CFT integrable system. We review various ways of proving its integrability, and discuss the associated methods of solution. In particular, we outline the coordinate and the algebraic Bethe ansatz, giving reference to literature suitable for learning these techniques. Finally we speculate which of the methods might lift to the exact solution of the AdS/CFT system, and sketch a promising method for constructing the Baxter Q-operator of the XXX chain. It allows to find the spectrum of the model using certain algeb…
We review the recent progress towards applying worldsheet integrability techniques to the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence to find its all-loop S matrix and Bethe-Yang equations. We study in full detail the massive sector of $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ superstrings supported by pure Ramond-Ramond (RR) fluxes. The extension of this machinery to accommodate massless modes, to the $AdS_3\times S^3\times S^3\times S^1$ pure-RR background and to backgrounds supported by mixed background fluxes is also reviewed. While the results discussed here were found elsewhere, our presentation sometimes deviates f…
Wilson loops are calculated within the AdS/CFT correspondence by finding a classical solution to the string equations of motion in AdS_5 x S^5 and evaluating its action. An important fact is that this sigma-model used to evaluate the Wilson loops is integrable, a feature that has gained relevance through the study of spinning strings carrying large quantum numbers and spin-chains. We apply the same techniques used to solve the equations for spinning strings to find the minimal surfaces describing a wide class of Wilson loops. We focus on different cases with periodic boundary conditions on the…
In recent years two intriguing observations have been made for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and for superstrings on AdS5xS5: In the planar limit the computation of the spectrum is vastly simplified by the apparent integrability of the models. Furthermore, planar scattering amplitudes of the gauge theory display remarkable features which have been attributed to the appearance of a dual superconformal symmetry. Here we review the connection of these two developments from the point of view of the classical symmetry by means of a super-T-self-duality. In particular, we show explicitly how the charg…
Building on arXiv:0912.1723, in this paper we investigate the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence using integrability techniques. We present an all-loop Bethe Ansatz (BA) for strings on AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1, with symmetry D(2,1;alpha)^2, valid for all values of alpha. This construction relies on a novel, alpha-dependent generalisation of the Zhukovsky map. We investigate the weakly-coupled limit of this BA and of the all-loop BA for strings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. We construct integrable short-range spin-chains and Hamiltonians that correspond to these weakly-coupled BAs. The spin-chains are alternating…
We investigate the type IIA string on AdS(2)xS(2)xT(6) supported by RR-flux which describes the gravitational side of the AdS(2)/CFT(1) correspondence. While the four-dimensional part AdS(2)xS(2) can be realized as a supercoset, the full superstring has both coset and non-coset excitations, the latter giving rise to massless worldsheet modes, a somewhat novel feature in AdS/CFT. The string is nevertheless known to be integrable at the classical level. In this paper we perform several computations checking aspects of both classical and quantum string integrability. At the classical level we com…
Type II supergravity admits an AdS(3) x S(2) x S(2) x T(3) solution with fluxes depending on several free parameters. We determine the constraints on these parameters imposed by the requirement of (classical) integrability of the superstring sigma model. To do this we analyze the low-energy effective action for the spinning GKP string. The absence of particle production in the tree-level S-matrix of bosonic excitations is shown to imply the vanishing of two of the four parameters in the NSNS three-form flux. This reduces the supergravity background to either the one-parameter AdS(3) x S(2) x S…
In integrable quantum field theories the large volume spectrum is given by the Bethe Ansatz. The leading corrections, due to virtual particles circulating around the cylinder, are encoded in so-called Luscher corrections. In order to apply these techniques to the AdS/CFT correspondence one has to generalize these corrections to the case of generic dispersion relations and to multiparticle states. We review these various generalizations and the applications of Luscher's corrections to the study of the worldsheet QFT of the superstring in AdS5xS5 and, consequently, to anomalous dimensions of ope…
We discuss the quasiclassical geometry and integrable systems related to the gauge/string duality. The analysis of quasiclassical solutions to the Bethe anzatz equations arising in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence is performed, compare to stationary phase equations for the matrix integrals. We demonstrate how the underlying geometry is related to the integrable sigma-models of dual string theory, and investigate some details of this correspondence.

We investigate the AdS(3)/CFT(2) correspondence for theories with 16 supercharges using the integrability approach. We construct Green-Schwarz actions for Type IIB strings on AdS(3)xS(3)xM(4) where M(4)=T(4) or S(3)xS(1) using the coset approach. These actions are based on a Z(4) automorphism of the super-coset D(2,1;alpha)xD(2,1;alpha)/SO(1,2)xSO(3)xSO(3). The equations of motion admit a representation in terms of a Lax connection, showing that the system is classically integrable. We present the finite gap equations for these actions. When alpha=0,1/2,1 we propose a set of quantum Bethe equa…
Recent explorations of the AdS/CFT correspondence have unveiled integrable structures underlying both planar N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory and type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x S^5. Integrability in the gauge theory emerges from the fact that the dilatation generator can be identified with the Hamiltonian of an integrable quantum spin chain, and the classical string theory has been shown to contain infinite towers of hidden currents, a typical signature of integrability. Efforts to match the integrable structures of various classical string configurations to those of corresponding gauge theory…
Integrability occupies an increasingly important role in direct tests of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Integrable structures have appeared in both planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and type IIB superstring theory on AdS_5 x S^5. A generalized statement of the AdS/CFT conjecture has therefore emerged in which, in addition to string energies corresponding to gauge theory anomalous dimensions, an infinite tower of higher charges on each side of the duality should also be equated. Demonstrations of this larger equivalence have been successful in certain regimes. To test this correspondence in a mor…
Using the thermodynamical Bethe ansatz method we derive an infinite set of integral non-linear equations for the spectrum of states/operators in AdS/CFT. The Y-system conjectured in arXiv:0901.3753 for the spectrum of all operators in planar N=4 SYM theory follows from these equations. In particular, we present the integral equations for the spectrum of all operators within the sl(2) sector. We prove that all the kernels and free terms entering these TBA equations are real and have nice fusion properties in the relevant mirror kinematics. We find the analogue of DHM formula for the dressing ke…
In this manuscript we study Liouvillian non-integrability of strings in $AdS_{6}\times S^{2}\timesΣ$ background. We consider soliton strings and look for simple solutions in order to reduce the equations to only one linear second order differential equation called Normal Variation Equation (NVE). We study truncations in $η$ and $σ$ variables showing their applicability or not to catch (non) integrability of models. With this technique we are able to study many recent cases considered in the literature: the abelian and non-abelian T-duals, the $(p,q)$-5-brane system, the T$_{N}$, $+_{MN}$ theor…
We write down the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz for string theory on $\mbox{AdS}_3\times\mbox{S}^3\times\mbox{T}^4$ and $\mbox{AdS}_3\times\mbox{S}^3\times\mbox{K3}$ in its orbifold limits. We use it to determine the wave-functions of protected closed strings in these backgrounds and prove that their energies are protected to all orders in $α'$. We further apply the ABA to find the wave functions of protected states of $\mbox{AdS}_3\times\mbox{S}^3\times\mbox{S}^3\times \mbox{S}^1$ and its $\mathbf{Z}_2$ orbifold. Our findings match with protected spectrum calculations from supergravity, $\mbox{Sym}^…
