The Hubbard model is a simplified description for the evolution of interacting spin-1/2 fermions on a d-dimensional lattice. In a kinetic scaling limit, the Hubbard model can be associated with a matrix-valued Boltzmann equation, the Hubbard-Boltzmann equation. Its collision operator is a sum of two qualitatively different terms: The first term is similar to the collision operator of the fermionic Boltzmann-Nordheim equation. The second term leads to a momentum-dependent rotation of the spin basis. The rotation is determined by a principal value integral which depends quadratically on the state of the system and might become singular for non-smooth states. In this paper, we prove that the spatially homogeneous equation nevertheless has global solutions in L^\infty(T^d,C^{2x2}) for any initial data W_0 which satisfies the "Fermi constraint" in the sense that 0 <= W_0 <= 1 almost everywhere. We also prove that there is a unique "physical" solution for which the Fermi constraint holds at all times. For the proof, we need to make a number of assumptions about the lattice dispersion relation which, however, are satisfied by the nearest neighbor Hubbard model, provided that d >= 3. These assumptions suffice to guarantee that, although possibly singular, the local rotation term is generated by a function in L^2(T^d,C^{2x2}).
We study, both analytically and numerically, the Boltzmann transport equation for the Hubbard chain with nearest neighbor hopping and spatially homogeneous initial condition. The time-dependent Wigner function is matrix-valued because of spin. The H-theorem holds. The nearest neighbor chain is integrable which, on the kinetic level, is reflected by infinitely many additional conservation laws and linked to the fact that there are also non-thermal stationary states. We characterize all stationary solutions. Numerically, we observe an exponentially fast convergence to stationarity and investigat…
The standard Fermi-Hubbard chain becomes non-integrable by adding to the nearest neighbor hopping additional longer range hopping amplitudes. We assume that the quartic interaction is weak and investigate numerically the dynamics of the chain on the level of the Boltzmann type kinetic equation. Only the spatially homogeneous case is considered. We observe that the huge degeneracy of stationary states in case of nearest neighbor hopping is lost and the convergence to the thermal Fermi-Dirac distribution is restored. The convergence to equilibrium is exponentially fast. However for small n.n.n. …
The paper is devoted to group analysis of the spatially homogeneous and isotropic Boltzmann equation with a source term. In fact, the Fourier transform of the Boltzmann equation with respect to the molecular velocity variable is considered. Using a particular class of solutions, the determining equation for the admitted Lie group is reduced to a partial differential equation for the source function. The latter equation is analyzed by an algebraic method. A complete group classification of the Fourier transform of the Boltzmann equation is given. All invariant solutions of this equation are als…
For the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with cutoff hard potentials it is shown that solutions remain bounded from above, uniformly in time, by a Maxwellian distribution, provided the initial data have a Maxwellian upper bound. The main technique is based on a comparison principle that uses a certain dissipative property of the linear Boltzmann equation. Implications of the technique to propagation of upper Maxwellian bounds in the spatially-inhomogeneous case are discussed.
We prove that the Cauchy problem associated to the radially symmetric spatially homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with Maxwellian molecules enjoys the same Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional harmonic oscillator.
We consider the rate of convergence of solutions of spatially inhomogenous Boltzmann equations, with hard sphere potentials, to some equilibriums, called Maxwellians. Maxwellians are spatially homogenous static Maxwell velocity distributions with different temperatures and mean velocities. We study solutions in weighted space $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{3}\times \mathbb{T}^3)$. We prove a conjecture of C. Villani: assume the solution is sufficiently localized and sufficiently smooth, then the solution, in $L^{1}$-space, converges to a Maxwellian, exponentially fast in time.
We give an explicit bound for the Wasserstein distance with quadratic cost between the solutions of Boltzmann's and Landau's equations in the case of soft and Coulomb potentials. This gives an explicit rate of convergence for the grazing collisions limit. Our result is local in time for very soft and Coulomb potentials and global in time for moderately soft potentials.
For the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with hard po- tentials and Grad's cutoff (e.g. hard spheres), we give quantitative estimates of exponential convergence to equilibrium, and we show that the rate of exponential decay is governed by the spectral gap for the linearized equation, on which we provide a lower bound. Our approach is based on establishing spectral gap-like estimates valid near the equilibrium, and then connecting the latter to the quantitative nonlinear theory. This leads us to an explicit study of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator in functional spaces larger…
We study the Boltzmann transport equation for the Bose-Hubbard chain in the kinetic regime. The time-dependent Wigner function is matrix-valued with odd dimension due to integer spin. For nearest neighbor hopping only, there are infinitely many additional conservation laws and nonthermal stationary states. Adding longer range hopping amplitudes entails exclusively thermal equilibrium states. We provide a derivation of the Boltzmann equation based on the Hubbard hamiltonian, including general interactions beyond on-site, and illustrate the results by numerical simulations. In particular, conver…
In this paper, we prove some a priori stability estimates (in weighted Sobolev spaces) for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff (covering every physical collision kernels). These estimates are conditioned to some regularity estimates on the solutions, and therefore reduce the stability and uniqueness issue to the one of proving suitable regularity bounds on the solutions. We then prove such regularity bounds for a class of interactions including the so-called (non cutoff and non mollified) hard potentials and moderately soft potentials. In particular, we obtain t…
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for regularized soft potentials and Grad's angular cutoff. We prove that uniform (in time) bounds in $L^1 ((1 + |v|^s)dv)$ and $H^k$ norms, $s, k \ge 0$ hold for its solution. The proof is based on the mixture of estimates of polynomial growth in time of those norms together with the quantitative results of relaxation to equilibrium in $L^1$ obtained by the so-called "entropy-entropy production" method in the context of dissipative systems with slowly growing a priori bounds (see reference [14]).
In this paper, we prove the propagation of uniform upper bounds for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation. These $L^\infty$ bounds have been known to be a challenging open problem in relativistic kinetic theory. To accomplish this, we establish two types of estimates for the gain part of the collision operator: first, we prove a potential type estimate and a relativistic hyper-surface integral estimate. We then combine those estimates using the relativistic counter-part of the Carleman representation to derive uniform control of the gain term for the relativistic collision …
The paper is concerned with the spatially homogeneous isotropic Boltzmann equation for Bose-Einstein particles with quantum collision kernel where the interaction potential $ϕ({\bf x})$ can be approximately written as the delta function plus a certain attractive potential such that the Fourier transform $\widehatϕ$ of $ϕ$ behaves like $0 \le \widehatϕ(ξ) \le {\rm const.} |ξ|^η$ for $|ξ|<<1$ for some constant $η\ge 1$. We prove that in this case, there is no condensation in finite time for all temperatures and all solutions, and thus it is completely different from the case $\widehatϕ(ξ) \ge {\…
We prove an inequality on the Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance --which can be seen as a particular case of a Wasserstein metric-- between two solutions of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff, but with a moderate angular singularity. Our method is in the spirit of [7]. We deduce some well-posedness and stability results in the physically relevant cases of hard and moderately soft potentials. In the case of hard potentials, we relax the regularity assumption of [6], but we need stronger assumptions on the tail of the distribution (namely some exponential decay). We…
Numerical approximation of the Boltzmann equation is a challenging problem due to its high-dimensional, nonlocal, and nonlinear collision integral. Over the past decade, the Fourier-Galerkin spectral method has become a popular deterministic method for solving the Boltzmann equation, manifested by its high accuracy and potential of being further accelerated by the fast Fourier transform. Albeit its practical success, the stability of the method is only recently proved by Filbet, F. & Mouhot, C. in [$ Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.$ 363, no. 4 (2011): 1947-1980.] by utilizing the "spreading" property …
In this paper, we establish optimal hypoelliptic estimates for a class of kinetic equations, which are simplified linear models for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff.
We consider a class of distribution functions having the form $ f(v,t)=t^{-dat} F(v e^{-at} )$, $ a=\mathrm{const.} $, where $ v $ and $ t $ denote the particle velocity and the time. This class of self-similar solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation (BE) for Maxwell molecules was studied by Bobylev and Cercignani in early 2000s. The solutions are positive, but have an infinite second moment (energy). However, the same class of distribution functions with finite energy appears to be closely connected with quite different class of group-invariant solutions of the spatially inh…
This note deals with the long-time behavior of the solution to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwellian molecules, when the initial datum belongs to a suitable neighborhood of the Maxwellian equilibrium. In particulary, it contains a quantification of the rate of exponential convergence, obtained by simple arguments.
This paper proves the existence of weak solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwellian molecules, when the initial data are chosen from the space of all Borel probability measures on R^3 with finite second moments and the (angular) collision kernel satisfies a very weak cutoff condition. Conservation of momentum and energy is also proved for these weak solutions, without resorting to any boundedness of the entropy.
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for hard potentials without cutoff. We prove that an exponential moment of order $ρ=\min\{2γ/(2-ν),2\}$, with the usual notation, is immediately created. This is stronger than what happens in the case with cutoff. We also show that exponential moments of order $ρ\in (0,2]$ are propagated.
The uniform shear flow for the rarefied gas is governed by the time-dependent spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with a linear shear force. The main feature of such flow is that the temperature may increase in time due to the shearing motion that induces viscous heat and the system becomes far from equilibrium. For Maxwell molecules, we establish the unique existence, regularity, shear-rate-dependent structure and non-negativity of self-similar profiles for any small shear rate. The non-negativity is justified through the large time asymptotic stability even in spatially inhomogeneous pe…
The notion of distance between a global Maxwellian function and an arbitrary solution $f$ (with the same total density $ρ$ at the fixed moment $t$) of Boltzmann equation is introduced. In this way we essentially generalize the important Kullback-Leibler distance, which was used before. Namely, we generalize it for the spatially inhomogeneous case. An extremal problem to find a solution of the Boltzmann equation, such that $\dist\{M,f\}$ is minimal in the class of solutions with the fixed values of energy and of $n$ moments, is solved. The cases of the classical and quantum (for Fermi and Bose …
The Boltzmann-Nordheim equation is a modification of the Boltzmann equation, based on physical considerations, that describes the dynamics of the distribution of particles in a quantum gas composed of bosons or fermions. In this work we investigate the Cauchy theory of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann-Nordheim equation for bosons, in dimension $d\geq 3$. We show existence and uniqueness locally in time for any initial data in $L^\infty\left(1+|v|^s\right)$ with finite mass and energy, for a suitable $s$, as well as the instantaneous creation of moments of all order.
In this paper, we study the relativistic Boltzmann equation in the spatially flat Robertson-Walker spacetime. For a certain class of scattering kernels, global existence of classical solutions is proved. We use the standard method of Illner and Shinbrot for the global existence and apply the splitting technique of Guo and Strain for the regularity of solutions. The main interest of this paper is to study the evolution of matter distribution, rather than the evolution of spacetime. We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of solutions and will understand how the expansion of the universe affects the …
We consider the 2-dimensional spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for hard potentials. We assume that the initial condition is a probability measure that has some exponential moments and is not a Dirac mass. We prove some regularization properties: for a class of very hard potentials, the solution instantaneously belongs to $H^r$, for some $r\in (-1,2)$ depending on the parameters of the equation. Our proof relies on the use of a well-suited Malliavin calculus for jump processes.
There are not many kinetic models where it is possible to prove bifurcation phenomena for any value of the Knudsen number. Here we consider a binary mixture over a line with collisions and long range repulsive interaction between different species. It undergoes a segregation phase transition at sufficiently low temperature. The spatially homogeneous Maxwellian equilibrium corresponding to the mixed phase, minimizing the free energy at high temperature, changes into a maximizer when the temperature goes below a critical value, while non homogeneous minimizers, corresponding to coexisting segreg…
We consider a class of nonlinear Boltzmann equations describing return to thermal equilibrium in a gas of colliding particles suspended in a thermal medium. We study solutions in the space $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{3}\times \mathbb{T}^3).$ Special solutions of these equations, called "Maxwellians," are spatially homogenous static Maxwell velocity distributions at the temperature of the medium. We prove that, for dilute gases, the solutions corresponding to smooth initial conditions in a weighted $L^{1}$-space converge to a Maxwellian in $L^{1},$ exponentially fast in time.
The spatially homogeneous BGK equation is obtained as the limit if a model of a many particle system, similar to Mark Kac's charicature of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation.
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard-spheres, with constant restitution coefficient $α\in(0,1)$, under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution and any fixed $e\in(0,1]$. When the restitution coefficient $α$ is close to 1 we prove existence and uniqueness of global solutions considering the close-to-equilibrium regime. We also study the long-time behaviour of these solutions and prove a convergence to equilibrium with an exponential rate.
In this paper it is shown that unique solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation exist for all time and decay with any polynomial rate towards their steady state relativistic Maxwellian provided that the initial data starts out sufficiently close in $L^\infty_\ell$. If the initial data are continuous then so is the corresponding solution. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. Conditions on the collision kernel are generic in the sense of (Dudy{ń}ski and Ekiel-Je{ż}ewska, Comm. Math. Phys., 1988); this resolves the open question of global existence for the soft potentials.
This paper studies convergence to equilibrium for the spatially inhomogeneous linear relaxation Boltzmann equation in Boltzmann entropy and related entropy functionals the $p$-entropies. Villani proved in \cite{V09} entropic hypocoercivity for a class of PDEs in a Hörmander sum of squares form. It was an open question to prove such a result for an operator which does not share this form. We show exponentially fast convergence to equilibrium with explicit rate in entropy for a linear relaxation Boltzmann equation. The key new idea appearing in our proof is the use of a total derivative of the e…
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres, in the framework of so-called constant normal restitution coefficients. We prove the existence of self-similar solutions, and we give pointwise estimates on their tail. We also give general estimates on the tail and the regularity of generic solutions. In particular we prove Haff 's law on the rate of decay of temperature, as well as the algebraic decay of singularities. The proofs are based on the regularity study of a rescaled problem, with the help of the regularity properties of the gain part of the Boltzm…
We derive the 3D spatially homogeneous Boltzmann's equation with moderately soft potentials and singular angular interaction, from an interacting particles system. The collision kernel is of the form $B(z,σ)=|z|^γb\left( \frac{z}{|z|}\cdot σ\right)$ and for $K>0$, $\sin(θ)b\left(\cos(θ)\right)\sim Kθ^{-1-ν}$, with $γ\in (-2,-1)$ and $ν\in(1,2)$ satisfying $γ+ν>0$. We use at the particle level the regularizing effects of the grazing collisions, in order to control the singularity of the soft potential. This enables to use a classical compactness argument, and provide a qualitative convergence r…
We develop the Cauchy theory of the spatially homogeneous inelastic Boltzmann equation for hard spheres, for a general form of collision rate which includes in particular variable restitution coefficients depending on the kinetic energy and the relative velocity as well as the sticky particles model. We prove (local in time) non-concentration estimates in Orlicz spaces, from which we deduce weak stability and existence theorem. Strong stability together with uniqueness and instantaneous appearance of exponential moments are proved under additional smoothness assumption on the initial datum, fo…
