The notion of distance between a global Maxwellian function and an arbitrary solution $f$ (with the same total density $ρ$ at the fixed moment $t$) of Boltzmann equation is introduced. In this way we essentially generalize the important Kullback-Leibler distance, which was used before. Namely, we generalize it for the spatially inhomogeneous case. An extremal problem to find a solution of the Boltzmann equation, such that $\dist\{M,f\}$ is minimal in the class of solutions with the fixed values of energy and of $n$ moments, is solved. The cases of the classical and quantum (for Fermi and Bose particles) Boltzmann equations are studied and compared. The asymptotics and stability of solutions of the Boltzmann equations are also considered.
This paper is devoted to the study of the dynamics of charged particles in a weakly inhomogeneous dilute gas. More precisely, we consider the existence of unique global in time classical solutions for the Vlasov-MaxwellBoltzmann system and its asymptotic behavior when the particle distribution function is a small perturbation around an arbitrarily large homogenous solution of the Boltzmann equation.
We revisit the problem on the inner structure of shock waves in simple gases modelized by the Boltzmann kinetic equation. In \cite{pomeau1987shock}, a self-similarity approach was proposed for infinite total cross section resulting from a power law interaction, but this self-similar form does not have finite energy. Motivated by the work of Pomeau, Bobylev and Cercignani started the rigorous study of the solutions of the spatial homogeneous Boltzmann equation, focusing on those which do not have finite energy \cite{bobylev2002self,bobylev2003eternal}. In the present work, we provide a correcti…
In this paper, we establish optimal hypoelliptic estimates for a class of kinetic equations, which are simplified linear models for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff.
For the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with cutoff hard potentials it is shown that solutions remain bounded from above, uniformly in time, by a Maxwellian distribution, provided the initial data have a Maxwellian upper bound. The main technique is based on a comparison principle that uses a certain dissipative property of the linear Boltzmann equation. Implications of the technique to propagation of upper Maxwellian bounds in the spatially-inhomogeneous case are discussed.
Difference Boltzmann Equation is derived in a plane wavelets representation with account of two-particle correlations. It is shown that the set of plane wavelet orthonormal functions is complete. The set of ket vectors is used as the second quantization basis allowing introducing the positively definite distribution function. It is obtained that inhomogeneous system is described by numbers of particles at quantized positions with quantized momenta. Difference Boltzmann Equation transforms into the classical Boltzmann Equation in the limit, where distribution function varies little in and
This paper studies a space-inhomogeneous Boltzmann-Nordheim equation with pseudo-Maxwellian forces. Strong solutions are obtained for the Cauchy problem in a setting with large bounded L1 initial data. The main results are existence, uniqueness, stability and qualitative boundedness features for solutions conserving mass, momentum and energy.
As a Newtonian cosmological model the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system is considered, and a slightly modified Boltzmann equation, which describes the stability of an expanding universe, is derived. Asymptotic behaviour of solutions turns out to depend on the expansion of the universe, and in this paper we consider the soft potential case and will obtain asymptotic behaviour.
We show, using the spectral Galerkin method together with compactness arguments, existence and uniqueness of the periodic strong solutions for the magnetohydrodynamics's type equations with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. Also, we study the asymptotic stability for time periodic solution for this system. In particular, when the magnetic field h(x,t) is zero, we obtain existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of the strong solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with inhomogeneous boundary conditions.
In a general $C^1$ domain, we study the perturbative Cauchy theory for the Boltzmann equation with Maxwell boundary conditions with an accommodation coefficient $α$ in $(\sqrt{2/3},1]$, and discuss this threshold. We consider polynomial or stretched exponential weights $m(v)$ and prove existence, uniqueness and exponential trend to equilibrium around a global Maxwellian in $L^\infty_{x,v}(m)$. Of important note is the fact that the methods do not involve contradiction arguments.
We investigate the diffusion asymptotics of the Boltzmann equation for gaseous mixtures, in the perturbative regime around a local Maxwellian vector whose fluid quantities solve a flux-incompressible Maxwell-Stefan system. Our framework is the torus and we consider hard-potential collision kernels with angular cutoff. As opposed to existing results about hydrodynamic limits in the mono-species case, the local Maxwellian we study here is not a local equilibrium of the mixture due to cross-interactions. By means of a hypocoercive formalism and introducing a suitable modified Sobolev norm, we bui…
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard-spheres, with constant restitution coefficient $α\in(0,1)$, under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution and any fixed $e\in(0,1]$. When the restitution coefficient $α$ is close to 1 we prove existence and uniqueness of global solutions considering the close-to-equilibrium regime. We also study the long-time behaviour of these solutions and prove a convergence to equilibrium with an exponential rate.
In this paper we study a generalized class of Maxwell-Boltzmann equations which in addition to the usual collision term contains a linear deformation term described by a matrix A. This class of equations arises, for instance, from the analysis of homoenergetic solutions for the Boltzmann equation considered by many authors since 1950s. Our main goal is to study a large time asymptotics of solutions under assumption of smallness of the matrix A. The main result of the paper is formulated in Theorem 2.1. Informally stated, this Theorem says that, for sufficiently small norm of A, any non-negativ…
The article discusses some of the latest advances in the mathematical understanding of the nature of kinetic equations that describe the collective behavior of many-particle systems with collisional dynamics.
This paper studies convergence to equilibrium for the spatially inhomogeneous linear relaxation Boltzmann equation in Boltzmann entropy and related entropy functionals the $p$-entropies. Villani proved in \cite{V09} entropic hypocoercivity for a class of PDEs in a Hörmander sum of squares form. It was an open question to prove such a result for an operator which does not share this form. We show exponentially fast convergence to equilibrium with explicit rate in entropy for a linear relaxation Boltzmann equation. The key new idea appearing in our proof is the use of a total derivative of the e…
In this paper it is shown that unique solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation exist for all time and decay with any polynomial rate towards their steady state relativistic Maxwellian provided that the initial data starts out sufficiently close in $L^\infty_\ell$. If the initial data are continuous then so is the corresponding solution. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. Conditions on the collision kernel are generic in the sense of (Dudy{ń}ski and Ekiel-Je{ż}ewska, Comm. Math. Phys., 1988); this resolves the open question of global existence for the soft potentials.
A rigorous derivation of point vortex systems from kinetic equations has been a challenging open problem, due to singular layers in the inviscid limit, giving a large velocity gradient in the Boltzmann equations. In this paper, we derive the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff point-vortex system from the hydrodynamic limits of the Boltzmann equations. We construct Boltzmann solutions by the Hilbert-type expansion associated to the point vortices solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations. We give a precise pointwise estimate for the solution of the Boltzmann equations with small Strouhal number and Knudsen …
In this paper, we study the relativistic Boltzmann equation in the spatially flat Robertson-Walker spacetime. For a certain class of scattering kernels, global existence of classical solutions is proved. We use the standard method of Illner and Shinbrot for the global existence and apply the splitting technique of Guo and Strain for the regularity of solutions. The main interest of this paper is to study the evolution of matter distribution, rather than the evolution of spacetime. We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of solutions and will understand how the expansion of the universe affects the …
In this paper we present a formal analysis of the long-time asymptotics of a particular class of solutions of the Boltzmann equation, known as homoenergetic solutions, which have the form $f\left( x,v,t\right)=g\left( v-L\left( t\right) x,t\right)$ where $L\left( t\right) =A\left(I+tA\right) ^{-1}$ with the matrix $A$ describing a shear flow or a dilatation or a combination of both. We began this study in \cite{JNV1}. Homoenergetic solutions satisfy an integro-differential equation which contains, in addition to the classical Boltzmann collision operator, a linear hyperbolic term. In \cite{JNV…
We give an explicit bound for the Wasserstein distance with quadratic cost between the solutions of Boltzmann's and Landau's equations in the case of soft and Coulomb potentials. This gives an explicit rate of convergence for the grazing collisions limit. Our result is local in time for very soft and Coulomb potentials and global in time for moderately soft potentials.
The generalization of the BGK relaxation model to the special relativity setting is revisited here. We deal with several issues related to this relativistic kinetic model which seem to have been overlooked in the previous physical literature, including the unique determination of associated physical parameters, classical, ultra-relativistic and hydrodynamical limits, maximum entropy principles and the analysis of the linearized operator.
The uniform shear flow for the rarefied gas is governed by the time-dependent spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with a linear shear force. The main feature of such flow is that the temperature may increase in time due to the shearing motion that induces viscous heat and the system becomes far from equilibrium. For Maxwell molecules, we establish the unique existence, regularity, shear-rate-dependent structure and non-negativity of self-similar profiles for any small shear rate. The non-negativity is justified through the large time asymptotic stability even in spatially inhomogeneous pe…
In this paper we continue the formal analysis of the long-time asymptotics of the homoenergetic solutions for the Boltzmann equation that we began in [18]. They have the form $f\left( x,v,t\right) =g\left(v-L\left( t\right) x,t\right) $ where $L\left( t\right) =A\left(I+tA\right) ^{-1}$ where $A$ is a constant matrix. Homoenergetic solutions satisfy an integro-differential equation which contains, in addition to the classical Boltzmann collision operator, a linear hyperbolic term. Depending on the properties of the collision kernel the collision and the hyperbolic terms might be of the same or…
The dynamics of a point particle in a periodic array of spherical scatterers converges, in the limit of small scatterer size, to a random flight process, whose paths are piecewise linear curves generated by a Markov process with memory two. The corresponding transport equation is distinctly different from the linear Boltzmann equation observed in the case of a random configuration of scatterers. In the present paper we provide asymptotic estimates for the transition probabilities of this Markov process. Our results in particular sharpen previous upper and lower bounds on the distribution of fr…
In classical kinetic or kinetic-like models a particle free path distribution is exponensial, but this is more likely to be an exception than a rule. In this paper we derive a linear Boltzmann-like equation for a general free path distribution in the framework of Alt's model J. Math. Biol. 9:147 (1980). In the special case that the free path distribution has at least first and second finite moments we construct an asymptotic solution of the equation for small mean free paths. The asymptotic solution becomes a diffusion approximation to the one-speed Boltzmann-like equation.
This paper presents an asymptotic analysis of the Boltzmann equations (Riccati differential equations) that describe the physics of thermal dark-matter-relic abundances. Two different asymptotic techniques are used, boundary-layer theory, which makes use of asymptotic matching, and the delta expansion, which is a powerful technique for solving nonlinear differential equations. Two different Boltzmann equations are considered. The first is derived from general relativistic considerations and the second arises in dilatonic string cosmology. The global asymptotic analysis presented here is used t…
Weak solutions to the homogeneous Boltzmann equation with increasing energy have been constructed by Lu and Wennberg. We consider an underlying microscopic stochastic model with binary collision (Kac's model) and show that these solutions are atypical. More precisely, we prove that the probability of observing these paths is exponentially small in the number of particles and compute the exponential rate. This result is obtained by improving the established large deviation estimates in the canonical setting. Key ingredients are the extension of Sanov's theorem to the microcanonical ensemble and…
The goal of this work is to present an approach to the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwellian molecules with a physical collision kernel which allows us to construct unique solutions to the initial value problem in a space of probability measures defined via the Fourier transform. In that space, the second moment of a measure is not assumed to be finite, so infinite energy solutions are not {\it a priori} excluded from our considerations. Moreover, we study the large time asymptotics of solutions and, in a particular case, we give an elementary proof of the asymptotic stability of self-…
We consider the Poisson-Boltzmann equation in a periodic cell, representative of a porous medium. It is a model for the electrostatic distribution of $N$ chemical species diluted in a liquid at rest, occupying the pore space with charged solid boundaries. We study the asymptotic behavior of its solution depending on a parameter $β$ which is the square of the ratio between a characteristic pore length and the Debye length. For small $β$ we identify the limit problem which is still a nonlinear Poisson equation involving only one species with maximal valence, opposite to the average of the given …
The kinetic theory of Maxwell and Boltzmann has been the subject of major scientific controversies. The alleged incompatibility between the reversible nature of the equations of classical mechanics and the increase of entropy, which, in the kinetic theory of gases, is a mathematical property of the Boltzmann equation known as the H Theorem, was one of the most basic arguments against the validity of kinetic theory. About a century later, in 1974, O. Lanford proposed a strategy to prove that the Boltzmann equation describes a particular asymptotic limit of Newton's equations of classical mechan…
We consider a class of distribution functions having the form $ f(v,t)=t^{-dat} F(v e^{-at} )$, $ a=\mathrm{const.} $, where $ v $ and $ t $ denote the particle velocity and the time. This class of self-similar solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation (BE) for Maxwell molecules was studied by Bobylev and Cercignani in early 2000s. The solutions are positive, but have an infinite second moment (energy). However, the same class of distribution functions with finite energy appears to be closely connected with quite different class of group-invariant solutions of the spatially inh…

In this paper we investigate asymptotic isotropization. We derive the asymptotic dynamics of spatially inhomogeneous cosmological models with a perfect fluid matter source and a positive cosmological constant near the de Sitter equilibrium state at late times, and near the flat FL equilibrium state at early times. Our results show that there exists an open set of solutions approaching the de Sitter state at late times, consistent with the cosmic no-hair conjecture. On the other hand, solutions that approach the flat FL state at early times are special and admit a so-called isotropic initial si…
For a finite random graph, we defined a simple model of statistical mechanics. We obtain an annealed asymptotic result for the random partition function for this model on finite random graphs as n; the size of the graph is very large. To obtain this result, we define the empirical bond distribution, which enumerates the number of bonds between a given couple of spins, and empirical spin distribution, which enumerates the number of sites having a given spin on the spinned random graphs. For these empirical distributions we extend the large deviation principle(LDP) to cover random graphs with co…
We present the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) for an inhomogeneous medium with a position-dependent mass particle by making use of the Langevin equation, in the context of a generalized deformed derivative for an arbitrary deformation space where the linear (nonlinear) character of the FPE is associated with the employed deformed linear (nonlinear) derivative. The FPE for an inhomogeneous medium with a position-dependent diffusion coefficient is equivalent to a deformed FPE within a deformed space, described by generalized derivatives, and constant diffusion coefficient. The deformed FPE is cons…
We derive new diffusion solutions to the monoenergetic generalized linear Boltzmann transport equation (GLBE) for the stationary collision density and scalar flux about an isotropic point source in an infinite $d$-dimensional absorbing medium with isotropic scattering. We consider both classical transport theory with exponentially-distributed free paths in arbitrary dimensions as well as a number of non-classical transport theories (non-exponential random flights) that describe a broader class of transport processes within partially-correlated random media. New rigorous asymptotic diffusion ap…
