We consider the isometric deformation problem for oriented non simply connected immersed minimal surfaces $f:M \to S^{4}$. We prove that the space of all isometric minimal immersions of $M$ into $S^{4}$ with the same normal curvature function is, within congruences, either finite or a circle.
Furthermore, we show that for any compact immersed minimal surface in $S^{4}$ with nontrivial normal bundle there are at most finitely many noncongruent immersed minimal surfaces in $S^{4}$ isometric to it with the same normal curvature function.
In trying to generalize Bianchi's Bäcklund transformation of quadrics to Bäcklund transformations of isometric deformations of other (classes of) surfaces, we investigate basic features of the isometric deformation of surfaces via the Bäcklund transformation with isometric correspondence of leaves of a general nature (independent of the shape of the seed).
It was shown by Ramanathan \cite{R} that any compact oriented non-simply-connected minimal surface in the three-dimensional round sphere admits at most a finite set of pairwise noncongruent minimal isometric immersions. Here we show that this result extends to isotropic surfaces in spheres of arbitrary dimension. The case of non-compact isotropic surfaces in space forms is also addressed.
A connected regular surface in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space is called a mixed type surface if the spacelike, timelike and lightlike point sets are all non-empty. Lightlike points on mixed type surfaces may be regarded as singular points of the induced metrics. In this paper, we introduce the L-Gauss map around non-degenerate lightlike points, and show the fundamental theorem of surface theory for mixed type surfaces at non-degenerate lightlike points. As an application, we prove that a real analytic mixed type surface admits non-trivial isometric deformations around generic lightlike points.
We classify hypersurfaces of rank two of Euclidean space $\R^{n+1}$ that admit genuine isometric deformations in $\R^{n+2}$. That an isometric immersion $\hat f\colon\,M^n\to\R^{n+2}$ is a genuine isometric deformation of a hypersurface $f\colon\, M^n\to\R^{n+1}$ means that $\hat f$ is nowhere a composition $\hat f=\hat F\circ f$, where $\hat F\colon\,V\subset \R^{n+1}\to\R^{n+2}$ is an isometric immersion of an open subset $V$ containing $f(M)$.
The aim of the paper is to investigate the rigidity and the deformability of pseudoholomorphic curves in the nearly K{ä}hler sphere $\mathbb{S}^6,$ among minimal surfaces in spheres. Under various assumptions we describe the moduli space of all noncongruent minimal surfaces $f\colon M\to\mathbb{S}^n$ that are isometric to a pseudoholomorphic curve in $\mathbb{S}^6.$ Moreover, we prove a Schur type theorem (see \cite[p. 36]{Chnew}) for minimal surfaces in spheres.
Along cuspidal edge singularities on a given surface in Euclidean 3-space, which can be parametrized by a regular space curve, a unit normal vector field $ν$ is well-defined as a smooth vector field of the surface. A cuspidal edge singular point is called generic if the osculating plane of the cuspidal edge (as a regular space curve) is not orthogonal to $ν$. This genericity is equivalent to the condition that its limiting normal curvature $κ_ν$ takes a non-zero value. In this paper, we show that a given generic (real analytic) cuspidal edge can be isometrically deformed preserving $κ_ν$ into …
For a given simply connected Riemannian surface Sigma, we relate the problem of finding minimal isometric immersions of Sigma into S^2 x R or H^2 x R to a system of two partial differential equations on Sigma. We prove that a constant intrinsic curvature minimal surface in S^2 x R or H^2 x R is either totally geodesic or part of an associate surface of a certain limit of catenoids in H^2 x R. We also prove that if a non constant curvature Riemannian surface admits a continuous one-parameter family of minimal isometric immersions into S^2 x R or H^2 x R, then all these immersions are associate.
Quad-surfaces are polyhedral surfaces with quadrilateral faces and the combinatorics of the square grid. A generic quad-surface is rigid. T-hedra is a class of flexible quad-surfaces introduced by Graf and Sauer in 1931. Particular examples of T-hedra are the celebrated Miura fold, discrete surfaces of revolution, and discrete molding surfaces. We provide an explicit parametrization of the isometric deformation of a T-hedron. T-hedra have a smooth analog, T-surfaces. For these we provide a synthetic and an analytic description, both similar to the corresponding descriptions of T-hedra. We also…
On any compact Riemann surface there always exists a singular non-CSC (constant scalar curvature) extremal K$\ddot{a}$hler metric which is called a non-CSC HCMU (the Hessian of the Curvature of the Metric is Umbilical) metric. In this paper, by moving frames, we show that any non-CSC HCMU metric can not be isometrically minimal immersed into 3-dimensional real space forms even locally. In general, any non-CSC HCMU metric can not be isometrically immersed into 3-dimensional real space forms with constant mean curvature (CMC).
The height functions of K^(1/4)-flow translators in Euclidean space R^3 solve the unimodular Hessian equation. We explicitly and geometrically determine the moduli space of all helicoidal K^(1/4)-flow translators, which are generated from planar curves by the action of helicoidal groups.
In this article, we study minimal isometric immersions of Kähler manifolds into product of two real space forms. We analyse the obstruction conditions to the existence of pluriharmonic isometric immersions of a Kähler manifold into those spaces and we prove that the only ones into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{m-1}\times \mathbb{R}$ are the minimal isometric immersions of Riemannian surfaces. Futhermore, we show that the existence of a minimal isometric immersion of a Kähler manifold $M^{2n}$ into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{S}^{m-k}\times \mathbb{H}^k…
Cuspidal edges and swallowtails are typical non-degenerate singular points on wave fronts in the Euclidean $3$-space. Their first fundamental forms belong to a class of positive semi-definite metrics called "Kossowski metrics". A point where a Kossowski metric is not positive definite is called a singular point or a semi-definite point of the metric. Kossowski proved that real analytic Kossowski metric germs at their non-parabolic singular points(the definition of "non-parabolic singular point" is stated in the introduction here) can be realized as wave front germs (Kossowski's realization the…
This paper is devoted to a deep analysis of the process known as Cheeger deformation, applied to manifolds with isometric group actions. Here, we provide new curvature estimates near singular orbits and present several applications. As the main result, we answer a question raised by a seminal result of Searle--Wilhelm about lifting positive Ricci curvature from the quotient of an isometric action. To answer this question, we develop techniques that can be used to provide a substantially streamlined version of a classical result of Lawson and Yau, generalize a curvature condition of Chavéz, Der…
We show that generic rank conditions on the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+p}$ of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n\geq 2$ into Euclidean space with low codimension $p$ implies that the submanifold has to be minimal. If $M^{2n}$ if simply connected, this amounts to the existence of a one-parameter associated family of isometric minimal immersions unless $f$ is holomorphic.
Concerning the problem of classifying complete submanifolds of Euclidean space with codimension two admitting genuine isometric deformations, until now the only known examples with the maximal possible rank four are the real Kaehler minimal submanifolds classified by Dajczer-Gromoll \cite{dg3} in parametric form. These submanifolds behave like minimal surfaces, namely, if simple connected either they admit a nontrivial one-parameter associated family of isometric deformations or are holomorphic. In this paper, we characterize a new class of complete minimal genuinely deformable Euclidean subma…
The number of constant mean curvature isometric immersions of a surface
A triharmonic map is a critical point of the 3-energy in the space of smooth maps between two Riemannian manifolds. We study a triharmonic isometric immersion into a space form of non-positively constant curvature. We show that if the domain is complete and both the 4-enegy and the L^4-norm of the tension field are finite, then such an immersion is minimal.
We deal with minimal surfaces in spheres that are locally isometric to a pseudoholomorphic curve in a totally geodesic $\mathbb{S}^{5}$ in the nearly K{ä}hler sphere $\mathbb{S}^6$. Being locally isometric to a pseudoholomorphic curve in $\mathbb{S}^5$ turns out to be equivalent to the Ricci-like condition $Δ\log(1-K)=6K,$ where $K$ is the Gaussian curvature of the induced metric. Besides flat minimal surfaces in spheres, direct sums of surfaces in the associated family of pseudoholomorphic curves in $\mathbb{S}^5$ do satisfy this Ricci-like condition. Surfaces in both classes are exceptional …
It is classically known that generic smooth maps of R^2 into R^3 admit only cross cap singularities. This suggests that the class of cross caps might be an important object in differential geometry. We show that the standard cross cap (u,uv,v^2) has non-trivial isometric deformations with infinite dimensional freedom. Since there are several geometric invariants for cross caps, the existence of isometric deformations suggests that one can ask which invariants of cross caps are intrinsic. In this paper, we show that there are three fundamental intrinsic invariants for cross caps. The existence …
Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be Lie groups furnished with bi-invariant metrics and $f:G_1\rightarrow G_2$ be a Lie group homomorphism which is also a minimal isometric immersion. If $G_1$ is compact and connected, we prove that either $G_1$ is isometric to a flat torus or $f$ is unstable as a harmonic map. We also apply this result to the case in which $f$ is the inclusion of a compact, connected Lie subgroup of a Lie group, as well as to construct several examples of unstable harmonic maps into the orthogonal group.
We study a class of exceptional minimal surfaces in spheres for which all Hopf differentials are holomorphic. Extending results of Eschenburg and Tribuzy \cite{ET0}, we obtain a description of exceptional surfaces in terms of a set of absolute value type functions, the $a$-invariants, that determine the geometry of the higher order curvature ellipses and satisfy certain Ricci-type conditions. We show that the $a$-invariants determine these surfaces up to a multiparameter family of isometric minimal deformations, where the number of the parameters is precisely the number of non-vanishing Hopf d…
In this paper, we study the weighted Fermat-Frechet problem for a $\frac{N (N+1)}{2}-$tuple of positive real numbers determining $N$-simplexes in the $N$ dimensional $K$-Space ($N$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ if $K=0,$ the $N$-dimensional open hemisphere of radius $\frac{1}{\sqrt{K}}$ ($\mathbb{S}_{\frac{1}{\sqrt{K}}}^{N}$) if $K >0$ and the Lobachevsky space $\mathbb{H}_{K}^{N}$ of constant curvature $K$ if $K<0$). The (weighted) Fermat-Frechet problem is a new generalization of the (weighted) Fermat problem for $N$-simplexes. We control the number of solutions (weighted Ferm…
A Ricci surface is a Riemannian 2-manifold $(M,g)$ whose Gaussian curvature $K$ satisfies $KΔK+g(dK,dK)+4K^3=0$. Every minimal surface isometrically embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is a Ricci surface of non-positive curvature. At the end of the 19th century Ricci-Curbastro has proved that conversely, every point $x$ of a Ricci surface has a neighborhood which embeds isometrically in $\mathbb{R}^3$ as a minimal surface, provided $K(x)<0$. We prove this result in full generality by showing that Ricci surfaces can be locally isometrically embedded either minimally in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or maximally in $\m…
We study the moduli space of congruence classes of isometric surfaces with the same mean curvature in 4-dimensional space forms. Having the same mean curvature means that there exists a parallel vector bundle isometry between the normal bundles that preserves the mean curvature vector fields. We prove that if both Gauss lifts of a compact surface to the twistor bundle are not vertically harmonic, then there exist at most three nontrivial congruence classes. We show that surfaces with a vertically harmonic Gauss lift possess a holomorphic quadratic differential, yielding thus a Hopf-type theore…
Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold with sectional curvatures between $0$ and $1$. A minimal $2$-sphere immersed in $M$ has area at least $4π$. If an embedded minimal sphere has area $4π$, then $M$ is isometric to the unit $3$-sphere or to a quotient of the product of the unit $2$-sphere with $\mathbb{R}$, with the product metric. We also obtain a rigidity theorem for the existence of hyperbolic cusps. Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold with sectional curvatures bounded above by $-1$. Suppose there is a $2$-torus $T$ embedded in $M$ with mean curvature one. Then the mean c…
In this paper, we first prove a compactness theorem for the space of closed embedded $f$-minimal surfaces of fixed topology in a closed three-manifold with positive Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature. Then we give a Lichnerowicz type lower bound of the first eigenvalue of the $f$-Laplacian on compact manifold with positive $m$-Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature, and prove that the lower bound is achieved only if the manifold is isometric to the $n$-shpere, or the $n$-dimensional hemisphere. Finally, for compact manifold with positive $m$-Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature and $f$-mean convex boundary, we prove an …
In this article we consider solvable hypersurfaces of the form $N \exp(\R H)$ with induced metrics in the symmetric space $M = SL(3,\C)/SU(3)$, where $H$ a suitable unit length vector in the subgroup $A$ of the Iwasawa decomposition $SL(3,\C) = NAK$. Since $M$ is rank $2$, $A$ is $2$-dimensional and we can parametrize these hypersurfaces via an angle $α\in [0,π/2]$ determining the direction of $H$. We show that one of the hypersurfaces (corresponding to $α= 0$) is minimally embedded and isometric to the non-symmetric $7$-dimensional Damek-Ricci space. We also provide an explicit formula for th…
We explore the relation among volume, curvature and properness of a $m$-dimensional isometric immersion in a Riemannian manifold. We show that, when the $L^p$-norm of the mean curvature vector is bounded for some $m \leq p\leq \infty$, and the ambient manifold is a Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry, properness is equivalent to the finiteness of the volume of extrinsic balls. We also relate the total absolute curvature of a surface isometrically immersed in a Riemannian manifold with its properness. Finally, we relate the curvature and the topology of a complete and non-compact $2$-Riem…
Consider a compact Riemannian manifold M of dimension n whose boundary \partial M is totally geodesic and is isometric to the standard sphere S^{n-1}. A natural conjecture of Min-Oo asserts that if the scalar curvature of M is at least n(n-1), then M is isometric to the hemisphere S_+^n equipped with its standard metric. This conjecture is inspired by the positive mass theorem in general relativity, and has been verified in many special cases. In this paper, we construct counterexamples to Min-Oo's conjecture in dimension n \geq 3.
In this paper we prove existence of complete minimal surfaces in some metric semidirect products. These surfaces are similar to the doubly and singly periodic Scherk minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$. In particular, we obtain these surfaces in the Heisenberg space with its canonical metric, and in Sol3 with a one-parameter family of non-isometric metrics.
In this paper we show that locally there exists a Willmore deformation between minimal surfaces in $S^{n+2}$ and minimal surfaces in $H^{n+2}$, i.e., there exists a smooth family of Willmore surfaces $\{y_t,t\in[0,1]\}$ such that $(y_t)|_{t=0}$ is conformally equivalent to a minimal surface in $S^{n+2}$ and $(y_t)|_{t=1}$ is conformally equivalent to a minimal surface in $H^{n+2}$. For some cases the deformations are global. Consider the Willmore deformations of the Veronese two-sphere and its generalizations in $S^4$, for any positive number $W_0\in\mathbb R^+$, we construct complete minimal …
A Laguerre geometric local characterization is given of L-minimal surfaces and Laguerre deformations (T-transforms) of L-minimal isothermic surfaces in terms of the holomorphicity of a quartic and a quadratic differential. This is used to prove that, via their Laguerre Gauss maps, the T-transforms of L-minimal isothermic surfaces have constant mean curvature in some translate of hyperbolic 3-space or de Sitter 3-space in Minkowski 4-space, or have mean curvature zero in some translate of a time-oriented lightcone in Minkowski 4-space. As an application, we show that various instances of the La…
Minimal surfaces with planar curvature lines are classical geometric objects, having been studied since the late 19th century. In this paper, we revisit the subject from a different point of view. After calculating their metric functions using an analytical method, we recover the Weierstrass data, and give clean parametrizations for these surfaces. Then, using these parametrizations, we show that there exists a single continuous deformation between all minimal surfaces with planar curvature lines. In the process, we establish the existence of axial directions for these surfaces.
The aim of this paper is to give a new link between integrable systems and minimal surface theory. The dressing operation uses the associated family of flat connections of a harmonic map to construct new harmonic maps. Since a minimal surface in 3-space is a Willmore surface, its conformal Gauss map is harmonic and a dressing on the conformal Gauss map can be defined. We study the induced transformation on minimal surfaces in the simplest case, the simple factor dressing, and show that the well-known Lopez-Ros deformation of minimal surfaces is a special case of this transformation. We express…
There are many known examples of scalar-flat Kähler ALE surfaces, all of which have group at infinity either cyclic or contained in ${\rm{SU}}(2)$. The main result in this paper shows that for any non-cyclic finite subgroup $Γ\subset {\rm{U}}(2)$ containing no complex reflections, there exist scalar-flat Kähler ALE metrics on the minimal resolution of $\mathbb{C}^2 / Γ$, for which $Γ$ occurs as the group at infinity. Furthermore, we show that these metrics admit a holomorphic isometric circle action. It is also shown that there exist scalar-flat Kähler ALE metrics with respect to some small de…
