Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we demonstrate the existence of the novel off-shell nilpotent (anti-)dual-BRST symmetries in the context of a six (5 + 1)-dimensional (6D) free Abelian 3-form gauge theory. Under these local and continuous symmetry transformations, the total gauge-fixing term of the Lagrangian density remains invariant. This observation should be contrasted with the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, under which, the total kinetic term of the theory remains invariant. The anticommutator of the above nilpotent (anti-)BRST and (anti-)dual-BRST transformations leads to the derivation of a bosonic symmetry in the theory. There exists a discrete symmetry transformation in the theory which provides a thread of connection between the nilpotent (anti-)BRST and (anti-)dual-BRST transformations. This theory is endowed with a ghost-scale symmetry, too. We discuss the algebra of these symmetry transformations and show that the structure of the algebra is reminiscent of the algebra of de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry.
We derive the various forms of BRST symmetry using Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky approach in the case of Abelian 2-form gauge theory. We show that the so-called dual BRST symmetry is not an independent symmetry but the generalization of BRST symmetry obtained from the canonical transformation in the bosonic and ghost sector. We further obtain the new forms of both BRST and dual-BRST symmetry by making a general transformation in the Lagrange multipliers of the bosonic and ghost sector of the theory.
We generalize the BRST transformations in Abelian rank-2 tensor field theory by allowing the parameter to be finite and field dependent and show that such transformations play crucial role in studying the Abelian 2-form gauge theory in noncovariant gauges. The generating functionals in different effective theories are connected through these generalized BRST transformations with different choice of finite parameter. We further consider the generalization of the anti-BRST transformations and show that even anti-BRST transformations with the finite field dependent parameter relate the generating…
Consistent couplings between an Abelian gauge field and three types of matter fields are investigated by means of the Hamiltonian BRST deformation theory based on cohomological techniques. In this manner, scalar electrodynamics, the Stuckelberg theory for Abelian zero- and one-forms, respectively, spinor electrodynamics, are inferred.
We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory within the framework of geometrical superfield formalism. We obtain the (anti-) BRST invariant coupled Lagrangian densities that respect the above nilpotent symmetry transformations. We discuss, furthermore, this (anti-) BRST invariance in the language of the superfield formalism. One of the novel features of our investigation is the observation that, in addition to the horizontality condition, we have to invoke…
We generalize the usual gauge transformations connected with the 1-form gauge potential to the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the four (3+1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive non-Abelian gauge theory that incorporates the famous (B\wedge F) term where there is an explicit topological coupling between 1-form and 2-form gauge fields. A novel feature of our present investigation is the observation that the (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for the auxiliary 1-form field (K_μ) and 2-form gauge potential (B_{0i}) are not generated by the (anti-)B…
We discuss various symmetry properties of the Lagrangian density of a four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism. The present free Abelian gauge theory is endowed with a Curci-Ferrari type condition which happens to be a key signature of the 4D non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory. In fact, it is due to the above condition that the nilpotent BRST and anti-BRST symmetries of the theory are found to be absolutely anticommuting in nature. For our present 2-form gauge theory, we discuss the BRST, anti-BRST, ghost and…
An irreducible Hamiltonian BRST approach to topologically coupled p- and (p+1)-forms is developed. The irreducible setting is enforced by means of constructing an irreducible Hamiltonian first-class model that is equivalent from the BRST point of view to the original redundant theory. The irreducible path integral can be brought to a manifestly Lorentz covariant form.
We discuss the nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST), anti-BRST and (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations and derive their corresponding conserved charges in the case of a two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) self-interacting non-Abelian gauge theory (without any interaction with matter fields). We point out a set of novel features that emerge out in the BRST and co-BRST analysis of the above 2D gauge theory. The algebraic structures of the symmetry operators (and corresponding conserved charges) and their relationship with the cohomological operators of differential geometry are established, too…
In this Thesis we present a comprehensive study of perturbative and non-perturbative non-Abelian gauge theories in the light of gauge-fixing procedures, focusing our attention on the BRST formalism in Yang-Mills theory. We propose first a model to re-write the Faddeev-Popov quantisation method in terms of group-theoretical techniques and then we give a possible way to solve the no-go theorem of Neuberger for lattice Yang-Mills theory with double BRST symmetry. In the final part we present a study of the Batalin-Vilkovisky quantisation method for non-linear gauges in non-Abelian gauge theories.
Using superspace unitary operator formalism, we derive various (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations explicitly for the non-Abelian 2-form gauge theories. We introduce a new Lagrangian with a coupling of matter fields not only with 1-from background field but also with a 2-form field. Moreover, the two gauge fields couple mutually as well. A new covariant derivative involving the 2-form gauge field is introduced. We also put forth a conjecture to generalise this idea to any p-form gauge theory.
Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we discuss some novel features of a two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory (without any interaction with matter fields). Besides the usual off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommutating (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, we discuss the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommutating (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations. Particularly, we lay emphasis on the existence of the coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangian densities of the 2D non-Abelian theory in view of the presence of (anti-)co-BRST symmet…
The non-perturbative nilpotent exact BRST symmetry of the Gribov-Zwanziger action in the Landau gauge constructed in [ arXiv:1506.06995 [hep-th]] is generalized to the case of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. The resulting diagonal gluon propagator is evaluating in dimensions D=4,3,2. In D=4,3 a decoupling type behavior is found in the infrared region, while in D=2 a scaling type behavior emerges.
We discuss BRST and anti--BRST transformations for an Abelian antisymmetric gauge field in 4D and find that, in order for them to anticommute, we have to impose a condition on the auxiliary fields. This condition is similar to the Curci-Ferrari condition for the 4D non--Abelian 1-form gauge theories and represents a consistency requirement. We interpret it as a signal that our Abelian 2-form gauge field theory is based on gerbes. To support this interpretation we discuss, in particular, the case of the 1-gerbe for our present field theory and write the relevant equations and symmetry transform…
We apply the well-established techniques of geometrical superfield approach to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism in the context of four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory by exploiting its inherent "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetry transformations and derive the corresponding off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting BRST and anti-BRST symmetry transformations. Our approach leads to the derivation of three (anti-) BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restrictions that are found to be responsible for the absolute anticommutativity of the BRST…
We derive the absolutely anticommuting (anti-)dual-BRST symmetry transformations for the appropriate Lagrangian densities of the (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory, under which, the total gauge-fixing term remains invariant. These symmetry transformations are the analogue of the co-exterior derivative of differential geometry, in the same sense, as the absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations are the analogue of the exterior derivative. A bosonic symmetry transformation is shown to be the analogue of the Laplacian operator. The algebraic structures o…
We demonstrate the existence of the nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive Abelian U(1) gauge theory that is described by the coupled Lagrangian densities (which incorporate the celebrated (B \wedge F) term). The absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-) BRST symmetry transformations is ensured by the existence of a Curci-Ferrari type restriction that emerges from the superfield formalism as well as from the equations of motion that are derived from the above coup…
We discuss the BRST cohomology and exhibit a connection between the Hodge decomposition theorem and the topological properties of a two dimensional free non-Abelian gauge theory having no interaction with matter fields. The topological nature of this theory is encoded in the vanishing of the Laplacian operator when equations of motion are exploited. We obtain two sets of topological invariants with respect to BRST and co-BRST charges on the two dimensional manifold and show that the Lagrangian density of the theory can be expressed as the sum of terms that are BRST- and co-BRST invariants.
We apply a generalized Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formulation to establish a connection between the gauge-fixed $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills (YM) theories formulated in the Lorenz gauge and in the Maximal Abelian (MA) gauge. It is shown that the generating functional corresponding to the Faddeev-Popov (FP) effective action in the MA gauge can be obtained from that in the Lorenz gauge by carrying out an appropriate finite and field-dependent BRST (FFBRST) transformation. In this procedure, the FP effective action in the MA gauge is found from that in the Lorenz gauge by incorporating the contributi…

We extend previous work on antifield dependent local BRST cohomology for matter coupled gauge theories of Yang-Mills type to the case of gauge groups that involve free abelian factors. More precisely, we first investigate in a model independent way how the dynamics enters the computation of the cohomology for a general class of Lagrangians in general spacetime dimensions. We then discuss explicit solutions in the case of specific models. Our analysis has implications for the structure of characteristic cohomology and for consistent deformations of the classical models, as well as for divergenc…
We discuss a D-dimensional Abelian 3-form gauge theory within the framework of Bonora-Tonin's superfield formalism and derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for this theory. To pay our homage to Victor I. Ogievetsky (1928-1996), who was one of the inventors of Abelian 2-form (antisymmetric tensor) gauge field, we go a step further and discuss the above D-dimensional Abelian 3-form gauge theory within the framework of BRST formalism and establish that the existence of the (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Fe…
The celebrated Curci-Ferrari (CF) type of restrictions are invoked to obtain the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-) BRST as well as (anti-) co-BRST symmetry transformations in the context of the Lagrangian description of the physical four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory. We show that the above CF type conditions, which turn out to be the secondary constraints of the theory, remain invariant with respect to the time-evolution of the above 2-form gauge system in the Hamiltonian formulation. This time-evolution invariance (i) physically ensures the …
We derive the off-shell nilpotent (fermionic) (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations by exploiting the (anti-)chiral superfield approach (ACSA) to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism for the interacting Abelian 1-form gauge theories where there is a coupling between the U(1) Abelian 1-form gauge field and Dirac as well as complex scalar fields. We exploit the (anti-)BRST invariant restrictions on the (anti-)chiral superfields to derive the fermionic symmetries of our present D-dimensional Abelian 1-form gauge theories. The novel observation of our present investigation is the derivation o…
A dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory (with B \wedge F term) is endowed with the "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetry transformations. In our present endeavor, we exploit the latter gauge symmetry transformations and perform the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) analysis of the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory. We demonstrate the existence of some novel features that have, hitherto, not been observed in the context of BRST approach to 4D (non-)Abelian 1-form as well as Abelian 2-form and 3-form gauge theories. We comment on the difference…
We show that the previously known off-shell nilpotent (s_{(a)b}^2 = 0) and absolutely anticommuting (s_b s_{ab} + s_{ab} s_b = 0) Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) transformations (s_b) and anti-BRST transformations (s_{ab}) are the symmetry transformations of the appropriate Lagrangian densities of a four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory which do not explicitly incorporate a very specific constrained field condition through a Lagrange multiplier 4D vector field. The above condition, which is the analogue of the Curci-Ferrari restriction of the non-Abelian 1-form gauge …
The existence of several nilpotent Noether charges in the decoupled formulation of two-dimensional gauge theories does not imply that all of these are required to annihilate the physical states. We elucidate this matter in the context of simple quantum mechanical and field theoretical models, where the structure of the Hilbert space is known. We provide a systematic procedure for deciding which of the BRST conditions is to be imposed on the physical states in order to ensure the equivalence of the decoupled formulation to the original, coupled one.
We discuss the (dual-)gauge transformations for the gauge-fixed Lagrangian density and establish their intimate connection with the translation subgroup T(2) of the Wigner's little group for the free one-form Abelian gauge theory in four $(3 + 1)$-dimensions (4D) of spacetime. Though the relationship between the usual gauge transformation for the Abelian massless gauge field and T(2) subgroup of the little group is quite well-known, such a connection between the dual-gauge transformation and the little group is a new observation. The above connections are further elaborated and demonstrated in…
We consider a general non-Abelian renormalizable ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory, regularized by higher covariant derivatives without breaking the BRST invariance, and calculate one-loop divergences for a general form of higher derivative regulator and of the gauge fixing term. It is demonstrated that the momentum integrals giving the one-loop $β$-function are integrals of double total derivatives independently of a particular choice of the higher derivative term. Evaluating them we reproduce the well-known result for the one-loop $β$-function. Also we find that the three-point ghost …
We exploit the theoretical strength of augmented version of superfield approach (AVSA) to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism to express the nilpotency and absolute anticommutativity properties of the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST conserved charges for the two $(1+1)$-dimensional (2D) non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory (without any interaction with matter fields) in the language of superspace variables, their derivatives and suitable superfields. In the proof of absolute anticommutativity property, we invoke the strength of Curci-Ferrari (CF) condition for the (anti-)BRST charges. No such…
We discuss the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) cohomology and Hodge decomposition theorem for the two dimensional free U(1) gauge theory. In addition to the usual BRST charge, we derive a local, conserved and nilpotent co(dual)-BRST charge under which the gauge-fixing term remains invariant. We express the Hodge decomposition theorem in terms of these charges and the Laplacian operator. We take a single photon state in the quantum Hilbert space and demonstrate the notion of gauge invariance, no-(anti)ghost theorem, transversality of photon and establish the topological nature of this theory b…

We continue the comparison between the field theoretical and geometrical approaches to the gauge field theories of various types, by deriving their Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST trasformation properties and comparing them with the geometrical properties of the bundles and gerbes. In particular, we provide the geometrical interpretation of the so--called Curci-Ferrari conditions that are invoked for the absolute anticommutativity of the BRST and anti-BRST symmetry transformations in the context of non-Abelian 1-form gauge theories as well as Abelian gauge theory that incorporat…
We discuss some aspects of the topological features of a non-interacting two (1+1)-dimensional Abelian gauge theory in the framework of superfield formalism. This theory is described by a BRST invariant Lagrangian density in the Feynman gauge. We express the local and continuous symmetries, Lagrangian density, topological invariants and symmetric energy momentum tensor of this theory in the language of superfields by exploiting the nilpotent (anti-)BRST- and (anti-)co-BRST symmetries. In particular, the Lagrangian density and symmetric energy momentum tensor of this topological theory turn out…
We show that the BRST/anti-BRST invariant 3+1 dimensional 2-form gauge theory has further nilpotent symmetries (dual BRST /anti-dual BRST) that leave the gauge fixing term invariant. The generator for the dual BRST symmetry is analogous to the co-exterior derivative of differential geometry. There exists a bosonic symmetry which keeps the ghost terms invariant and it turns out to be the analogue of the Laplacian operator. The Hodge duality operation is shown to correspond to a discrete symmetry in the theory. The generators of all these continuous symmetries are shown to obey the algebra of th…
We exploit the geometrical superfield formalism to derive the local, covariant and continuous Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry transformations and the non-local, non-covariant and continuous dual-BRST symmetry transformations for the free Abelian one-form gauge theory in four $(3 + 1)$-dimensions (4D) of spacetime. Our discussion is carried out in the framework of BRST invariant Lagrangian density for the above 4D theory in the Feynman gauge. The geometrical origin and interpretation for the (dual-)BRST charges (and the transformations they generate) are provided in the language of tr…
We derive the off-shell nilpotent symmetries of the two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory by using the theoretical techniques of the geometrical superfield approach to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism. For this purpose, we exploit the augmented version of superfield approach (AVSA) and derive theoretically useful nilpotent (anti-)BRST, (anti-)co-BRST symmetries and Curci-Ferrari (CF) type restrictions for the self-interacting 2D non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory (where there is no interaction with matter fields). The derivation of the (anti-)co-BRST symmetries and …
We demonstrate that the nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry invariance of the Lagrangian density of a four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory with Dirac fields can be captured within the framework of the superfield approach to BRST formalism. The above 4D theory, where there is an explicit coupling between the non-Abelian 1-form gauge field and the Dirac fields, is considered on a (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold, parameterized by the bosonic 4D space-time variables and a pair of Grassmannian variables. We show that the Grassmannian independe…
It is shown that the four $(3 + 1)$-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory provides an example of (i) a class of field theoretical models for the Hodge theory, and (ii) a possible candidate for the quasi-topological field theory (q-TFT). Despite many striking similarities with some of the key topological features of the two $(1 + 1)$-dimensional (2D) free Abelian (and self-interacting non-Abelian) gauge theories, it turns out that the 4D free Abelian 2-form gauge theory is {\it not} an exact TFT. To corroborate this conclusion, some of the key issues are discussed. In particular, it…
We discuss some aspects of cohomological properties of a two-dimensional free Abelian gauge theory in the framework of BRST formalism. We derive the conserved and nilpotent BRST- and co-BRST charges and express the Hodge decomposition theorem in terms of these charges and a conserved bosonic charge corresponding to the Laplacian operator. It is because of the topological nature of free U(1) gauge theory that the Laplacian operator goes to zero when equations of motion are exploited. We derive two sets of topological invariants which are related to each-other by a certain kind of duality transf…
In view of a raging controversy on the topic of dual-Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (dual-BRST/co-BRST) and anti-co-BRST symmetry transformations in the context of four (3+1)-dimensional (4D) Abelian 2-form and 2D (non-)Abelian 1-form gauge theories, we attempt, in our present short note, to settle the dust by taking the help of mathematics of differential geometry, connected with the Hodge theory, which was the original motivation for the nomenclature of "dual-BRST symmetry" in our earlier set of works. It has been claimed, in a recent set of papers, that the co-BRST symmetries are not independent…
We argue that the BRST and the anti-BRST super symmetries in the four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory can be spontaneously broken in a nonlinear partial gauge due to ghost-anti-ghost condensation. However, we show that the spontaneous BRST symmetry breaking can be avoided if we adopt the modified Maximal Abelian gauge which is an orthosymplectic $OSp(4|2)$ invariant renormalizable gauge proposed by the author to derive quark confinement. We compare the Maximal Abelian gauge with the conventional $OSp(4|2)$ invariant gauge proposed by Delbourgo-Jarvis and Baulieu-Thierry-Mieg. Finally, an implica…
Abelian 2-Form Gauge Theory: Basic Canonical Brackets and Nilpotency Property of the Noether (Anti-)BRST Charges
Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University(贝拿勒斯印度教大学理学院);DST Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University(贝拿勒斯印度教大学理学院 DST 交叉数学科学中心)
In the available literature, only the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetries are known for the Jackiw-Pi model of the three (2 + 1)-dimensional (3D) massive non-Abelian gauge theory. We derive the off-shell nilpotent (s_{(a)b}^2 = 0) and absolutely anticommuting (s_b \,s_{ab} + s_{ab}\, s_b = 0) (anti-)BRST transformations s_{(a)b} corresponding to the usual Yang-Mills gauge transformations of this model by exploiting the "augmented" superfield formalism where the horizontality condition and gauge invariant restrictions blend together in a meaningful manner. There is a non-Yang-Mills (NYM…
The Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) ghost field is a key element in constructing Witten's cubic open string field theory. However, to date, the ghost sector of the string field theory has not received a great deal of attention. In this study, we address the BRST ghost on multiple $Dp$-branes, which carries non-Abelian indices and couples to a non-Ablelian gauge field. We found that the massless components of the BRST ghost field can play the role of the Faddeev-Popov ghost in the non-Alelian gauge field, such that the string field theory maintains the local non-Abelian gauge invariance.
We analyse the constraints of an Abelian 2-form gauge theory using Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic formalism. Further, this theory is treated as a constrained system in the context of Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky formalism to retrieve the BRST symmetry. Using the fields decompositions the effective action for Abelian 2-form gauge theory is written in terms of diagonalized uncanonical part and BRST exact one. The nilpotent BRST and contracting homotopy $σ$ closed transformations with field redefinitions are shown as the Darboux transformations used in the Faddeev-Jackiw formalism.
We analyze the relation between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian BRST symmetry generators for a recently proposed two-dimensional symmetry. In particular it is shown that this symmetry may be obtained from a canonical transformation in the ghost sector in a gauge independent way.
In some of the physically interesting gauge systems, we show that the application of the Noether theorem does not lead to the deduction of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST charges that obey precisely the off-shell nilpotency property despite the fact that these charges are $(i)$ derived by using the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, $(ii)$ the generators of the above continuous symmetry transformations, and $(iii)$ conserved w.r.t. the time-evolution due to the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion derived from the Lagrangians/Lagrangian densities (that d…
We elucidate the geometry of the polynomial formulation of the non-abelian Stueckelberg mechanism. We show that a natural off-shell nilpotent BRST differential exists allowing to implement the constraint on the sigma field by means of BRST techniques. This is achieved by extending the ghost sector by an additional U(1) factor (abelian embedding). An important consequence is that a further BRST-invariant but not gauge-invariant mass term can be written for the non-abelian gauge fields. As all versions of the Stueckelberg theory, also the abelian embedding formulation yields a non power-counting…
We show that it is possible to formulate the most general first-class gauge algebra of the operator formalism by only using BRST-invariant constraints. In particular, we extend a previous construction for irreducible gauge algebras to the reducible case. The gauge algebra induces two nilpotent, Grassmann-odd, mutually anticommuting BRST operators that bear structural similarities with BRST/anti-BRST theories but with shifted ghost number assignments. In both cases we show how the extended BRST algebra can be encoded into an operator master equation. A unitarizing Hamiltonian that respects the …
We demonstrate that the two (1 + 1)-dimensional (2D) free 1-form Abelian gauge theory provides an interesting field theoretical model for the Hodge theory. The physical symmetries of the theory correspond to all the basic mathematical ingredients that are required in the definition of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. The conserved charges, corresponding to the above continuous symmetry transformations, constitute an algebra that is reminiscent of the algebra obeyed by the de Rham cohomological operators. The topological features of the above theory are discussed in…
Canonical quantization is reviewed here for the Abelian Lee-Wick model by using the Dirac constraints method, a Gupta-Bleuler-like prescription is implemented and the BRST charge operator for this model is built. New degrees of freedom associated to the (higher derivatives) Lee-Wick ghost are excluded from the (physical) space of observables by the imposition of a Piguet-Nielsen-type BRST-extended symmetry for the Lee-Wick mass term, removing the Lee-Wick mass parameter of the theory, which implies remove all the higher-derivative sector. In addition, another prescription based on a new subsid…
We derive the off-shell nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for {\it all} the fields of a free Abelian 2-form gauge theory by exploiting the geometrical superfield approach to BRST formalism. The above four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) theory is considered on a (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parameterized by the four even spacetime variables x^μ(with μ= 0, 1, 2, 3) and a pair of odd Grassmannian variables θand \barθ(with θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). One of the salient features of our present investigation is that the above nilpotent (anti-)…
A cohomological BRST characterization of the Seiberg-Witten (SW) map is given. We prove that the coefficients of the SW map can be identified with elements of the cohomology of the BRST operator modulo a total derivative. As an example, it will be illustrated how the first coefficients of the SW map can be written in terms of the Chern-Simons three form. This suggests a deep topological and geometrical origin of the SW map. The existence of the map for both Abelian and non-Abelian case is discussed. By using a recursive argument and the associativity of the $\star$-product, we shall be able to…
We exploit the key concepts of the augmented version of superfield approach to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism to derive the superspace (SUSP) dual unitary operator (and its Hermitian conjugate) and demonstrate their utility in the derivation of the nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-)dual BRST symmetry transformations for a set of interesting models of the Abelian 1-form gauge theories. These models are the one (0+1)-dimensional (1D) rigid rotor, modified versions of the two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) Proca as well as anomalous gauge theories and 2D model of a self-dual boson…
We show the existence of a co(dual)-BRST symmetry for the usual BRST invariant Lagrangian density of an Abelian gauge theory in two dimensions of space-time where a U(1) gauge field is coupled to the Noether conserved current (constructed by the Dirac fields). Under this new symmetry, it is the gauge-fixing term that remains invariant and the symmetry transformations on the Dirac fields are analogous to the chiral transformations. This interacting theory is shown to provide a tractable field theoretical model for the Hodge theory. The Hodge dual operation is shown to correspond to a discrete s…
