Macdonald processes are probability measures on sequences of partitions defined in terms of nonnegative specializations of the Macdonald symmetric functions and two Macdonald parameters q,t in [0,1). We prove several results about these processes, which include the following.
(1) We explicitly evaluate expectations of a rich family of observables for these processes. (2) In the case t=0, we find a Fredholm determinant formula for a q-Laplace transform of the distribution of the last part of the Macdonald-random partition. (3) We introduce Markov dynamics that preserve the class of Macdonald processes and lead to new "integrable" 2d and 1d interacting particle systems. (4) In a large time limit transition, and as q goes to 1, the particles of these systems crystallize on a lattice, and fluctuations around the lattice converge to O'Connell's Whittaker process that describe semi-discrete Brownian directed polymers. (5) This yields a Fredholm determinant for the Laplace transform of the polymer partition function, and taking its asymptotics we prove KPZ universality for the polymer (free energy fluctuation exponent 1/3 and Tracy-Widom GUE limit law). (6) Under intermediate disorder scaling, we recover the Laplace transform of the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data. (7) We provide contour integral formulas for a wide array of polymer moments. (8) This results in a new ansatz for solving quantum many body systems such as the delta Bose gas.
Macdonald processes are measures on sequences of integer partitions built using the Cauchy summation identity for Macdonald symmetric functions. These measures are a useful tool to uncover the integrability of many probabilistic systems, including the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation and a number of other models in its universality class. In this paper we develop the structural theory behind half-space variants of these models and the corresponding half-space Macdonald processes. These processes are built using a Littlewood summation identity instead of the Cauchy identity, and their analysi…
These are lecture notes for a mini-course given at the Cornell Probability Summer School in July 2013. Topics include lozenge tilings of polygons and their representation theoretic interpretation, the (q,t)-deformation of those leading to the Macdonald processes, nearest neighbor dynamics on Macdonald processes, their limit to semi-discrete Brownian polymers, and large time asymptotic analysis of polymer's partition function.
We propose periodic Macdonald processes as a $(q,t)$-deformation of periodic Schur processes and a periodic analogue of Macdonald processes. It is known that, in the theory of stochastic processes related to a family of symmetric functions, the Cauchy-like identity gives an explicit expression of a partition function. We compute the partition functions of periodic Macdonald processes relying on the free field realization of the Macdonald theory. We also study several families of observables for periodic Macdonald processes and give formulas of their moments. The technical tool is the free fiel…
Macdonald processes are certain probability measures on two-dimensional arrays of interlacing particles introduced by Borodin and Corwin (arXiv:1111.4408 [math.PR]). They are defined in terms of nonnegative specializations of the Macdonald symmetric functions and depend on two parameters (q,t), where 0<= q, t < 1. Our main result is a classification of continuous time, nearest neighbor Markov dynamics on the space of interlacing arrays that act nicely on Macdonald processes. The classification unites known examples of such dynamics and also yields many new ones. When t = 0, one dynamics leads …
We present a framework for computing averages of various observables of Macdonald processes. This leads to new contour--integral formulas for averages of a large class of multilevel observables, as well as Fredholm determinants for averages of two different single level observables.
Integrable probability has emerged as an active area of research at the interface of probability/mathematical physics/statistical mechanics on the one hand, and representation theory/integrable systems on the other. Informally, integrable probabilistic systems have two properties: 1) It is possible to write down concise and exact formulas for expectations of a variety of interesting observables (or functions) of the system. 2) Asymptotics of the system and associated exact formulas provide access to exact descriptions of the properties and statistics of large universality classes and universal…
We derive formulae for some ratios of the Macdonald functions, which are simpler and easier to treat than known formulae. The result gives two applications in probability theory. One is the formula for the L{é}vy measure of the distribution of the first hitting time of a Bessel process and the other is an explicit form for the expected volume of the Wiener sausage for an even dimensional Brownian motion. Moreover, the result enables us to write down the algebraic equations whose roots are the zeros of Macdonald functions.
Rosengren and Schlosser introduced notions of ${\it R}_N$-theta functions for the seven types of irreducible reduced affine root systems, ${\it R}_N={\it A}_{N-1}$, ${\it B}_{N}$, ${\it B}^{\vee}_N$, ${\it C}_{N}$, ${\it C}^{\vee}_N$, ${\it BC}_{N}$, ${\it D}_{N}$, $N \in \mathbb{N}$, and gave the Macdonald denominator formulas. We prove that, if the variables of the ${\it R}_N$-theta functions are properly scaled with $N$, they construct seven sets of biorthogonal functions, each of which has a continuous parameter $t \in (0, t_{\ast})$ with given $0< t_{\ast} < \infty$. Following the standar…
We study scaling limits of periodically weighted skew plane partitions with semilocal interactions and general boundary conditions. The semilocal interactions correspond to the Macdonald symmetric functions which are $(q,t)$-deformations of the Schur symmetric functions. We show that the height functions converge to a deterministic limit shape and that the global fluctuations are given by the $2$-dimensional Gaussian free field as $q,t\to 1$ and the mesh size goes to $0$. Specializing to the noninteracting case, this verifies the Kenyon-Okounkov conjecture for the case of the $r^{\mathrm{volum…
We prove that the two-dimensional Gaussian Free Field describes the asymptotics of global fluctuations of a multilevel extension of the general beta Jacobi random matrix ensembles. Our approach is based on the connection of the Jacobi ensembles to a degeneration of the Macdonald processes that parallels the degeneration of the Macdonald polynomials to to the Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions (of type A). We also discuss the beta goes to infinity limit.
We investigate a refracted Levy process driven by a jump diffusion process, whose jumps have rational Laplace transforms. For such a stochastic process, formulas for the Laplace transform of its occupation times are deduced. To derive the main results, some modifications on our previous approach have been made. In addition, we obtain a very interesting identity, which is conjectured to hold for a general refracted Levy process.
We consider a refracted jump diffusion process having two-sided jumps with rational Laplace transforms. For such a process, by applying a straightforward but interesting approach, we derive formulas for the Laplace transform of its distribution. Our formulas are presented in an attractive form and the approach is novel. In particular, the idea in the application of an approximating procedure is remarkable. Besides, the results are used to price Variable Annuities with state-dependent fees.
Laplace transforms for integrals of stochastic processes have been known in analytically closed form for just a handful of Markov processes: namely, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck, the Cox-Ingerssol-Ross (CIR) process and the exponential of Brownian motion. In virtue of their analytical tractability, these processes are extensively used in modelling applications. In this paper, we construct broad extensions of these process classes. We show how the known models fit into a classification scheme for diffusion processes for which Laplace transforms for integrals of the diffusion processes and transitiona…
We study the exit time $τ=τ_{(0,\infty)}$ for 1-dimensional strictly stable processes and express its Laplace transform at $t^α$ as the Laplace transform of a positive random variable with explicit density. Consequently, $τ$ satisfies some multiplicative convolution relations. For some stable processes, e.g. for the symmetric $\frac23$-stable process, explicit formulas for the Laplace transform and the density of $τ$ are obtained as an application.
For a skip-free Markov process on non-negative integers with generator matrix Q, we evaluate the joint Laplace transform of the occupation times before hitting the state n (starting at 0). This Laplace transform has a very straightforward and familiar expression. We investigate the properties of this Laplace transform, especially the conditions under which the occupation times form a Markov chain.
We present the idea of intertwining of two diffusions by Feynman-Kac operators. We present some variations and implications of the method and give examples of its applications. Among others, it turns out to be a very useful tool for finding the expectations of some functionals of diffusions, especially for computing the Laplace transforms of stochastic processes. The examples give new results on marginal distributions of many stochastic processes including a generalized squared Bessel processes and joint distribution for squared Bessel bridge and its integral - the close formulae of the Laplac…
In this work we study drawdowns and drawups of general diffusion processes. The drawdown process is defined as the current drop of the process from its running maximum, while the drawup process is defined as the current increase over its running minimum. The drawdown and the drawup are the first hitting times of the drawdown and the drawup processes respectively. In particular, we derive a closed-form formula for the Laplace transform of the probability density of the drawdown of a units when it precedes the drawup of b units. We then separately consider the special case of drifted Brownian mo…
For spectrally negative Lévy processes, adapting an approach from \cite{BoLi:sub1} we identify joint Laplace transforms involving local times evaluated at either the first passage times, or independent exponential times, or inverse local times. The Laplace transforms are expressed in terms of the associated scale functions. Connections are made with the permanental process and the Markovian loop soup measure.
In this paper, we compute the Laplace transform of occupation times (of the negative half-line) of spectrally negative Lévy processes. Our results are extensions of known results for standard Brownian motion and jump-diffusion processes. The results are expressed in terms of the so-called scale functions of the spectrally negative Lévy process and its Laplace exponent. Applications to insurance risk models are also presented.
Continuous-state branching processes (CSBPs) with immigration (CBIs), stopped on hitting zero, are generalized by allowing the process governing immigration to be any Lévy process without negative jumps. Unlike the CBIs, these newly introduced processes do not appear to satisfy any natural affine property on the level of the Laplace transforms of the semigroups. Basic properties are noted. Explicit formulae (on neighborhoods of infinity) for the Laplace transforms of the first passage times downwards and of the explosion time are derived.
We consider the class of (possibly killed) spectrally positive Lévy process that have been time-changed by the inverse of an integral functional. Within this class we characterize the family of those processes which satisfy the following property: as functions of point of issue, the Laplace transforms of their first-passage times downwards are completely monotone. A wide (dense, in a sense) subfamily of this family admits closed form expressions for said Laplace transforms.
We introduce a new kind of symbol in the framework of Itô processes which are bounded on one side. The connection between this symbol and the infinitesimal generator is analyzed. Based on this concept, an integral criterion for invariant distributions of the underlying process is derived. Some applications are mentioned.
This work investigates continuous time stochastic differential games with a large number of players, whose costs and dynamics interact through the empirical distribution of both their states and their controls. The control processes are assumed to be open-loop. We give regularity conditions guaranteeing that if the finite-player game admits a Nash equilibrium, then both the sequence of equilibria and the corresponding states processes satisfy a Sanov-type large deviation principle. The result requires existence of a Lipschitz continuous solution of the master equation of the corresponding mean…
We provide the increasing eigenfunctions associated to spectrally negative self-similar Feller semigroups, which have been introduced by Lamperti. These eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of a new family of power series which includes, for instance, the modified Bessel functions of the first kind and some generalizations of the Mittag-Leffler function. Then, we show that some specific combinations of these functions are Laplace transforms of self-decomposable or infinitely divisible distributions concentrated on the positive line with respect to the main argument, and, more surprisingly, wi…
We study properties of the Laplace transforms of non-negative additive functionals of Markov chains. We are namely interested in a multiplicative ergodicity property used in [18] to study bifurcating processes with ancestral dependence. We develop a general approach based on the use of the operator perturbation method. We apply our general results to two examples of Markov chains, including a linear autoregressive model. In these two examples the operator-type assumptions reduce to some expected finite moment conditions on the functional (no exponential moment conditions are assumed in this wo…
We study the exponential growth of bifurcating processes with ancestral dependence. We suppose here that the lifetimes of the cells are dependent random variables, that the numbers of new cells are random and dependent. Lifetimes and new cells's numbers are also assumed to be dependent. We illustrate our results by examples, including some Markov models. Our approach is related to the behaviour of the Laplace transform of nonnegative additive functional of Markov chains and require weak moment assumption (no exponential moment is needed).
In this paper we study the joint ruin problem for two insurance companies that divide between them both claims and premia in some specified proportions (modeling two branches of the same insurance company or an insurance and re-insurance company). Modeling the risk processes of the insurance companies by Cramér-Lundberg processes we obtain the Laplace transform in space of the probability that either of the insurance companies is ruined in finite time. Subsequently, for exponentially distributed claims, we derive an explicit analytical expression for this joint ruin probability by explicitly i…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate properties of self-exciting jump processes. We derive the Laplace transform of SDE driven self-exciting processes with independent, identically distributed jump sizes. By using this Laplace transform, we find a recursive formula for the moments of the self-exciting process. The formula for the moments allow us to derive expressions for the expectation and variance of the self-exciting process. We show that self-exciting processes can exhibit both finite and infinite activity behaviour. Furthermore, we show that the scaling limit of the intensity proc…
In this paper we provide explicit representations of Laplace transforms of extinction time and total progeny of rough continuous-state branching processes introduced in [7]. Also, we show that their tail distributions are much fatter than those of Feller branching diffusions.
We investigate distributions of hyperbolic Bessel processes. We find links between the hyperbolic cosine of hyperbolic Bessel processes and functionals of geometric Brownian motion. We present an explicit formula for the Laplace transform of the hyperbolic cosine of a hyperbolic Bessel process and some other interesting probabilistic representations of this Laplace transform. We express the one-dimensional distribution of a hyperbolic Bessel process in terms of other, known and independent processes. We present some applications including a new proof of Bougerol's identity and its generalizati…
The theory of affine processes on the space of positive semidefinite d x d matrices has been established in a joint work with Cuchiero, Filipović and Teichmann (2011). We confirm the conjecture stated therein that in dimension d greater than 1 this process class does not exhibit jumps of infinite total variation. This constitutes a geometric phenomenon which is in contrast to the situation on the positive real line (Kawazu and Watanabe, 1974). As an application we prove that the exponentially affine property of the Laplace transform carries over to the Fourier-Laplace transform if the diffusio…
For a birth-death process subject to catastrophes, defined on the state-space $S=\{r,r+1,r+2,...\}$, with $r$ a positive integer or zero, the first-visit time to a state $k\in S$ is considered and the Laplace transform of its probability density function is determined, use of which is then made to obtain mean and variance. The Laplace transform of the probability density function of the first effective catastrophe occurrence time and its expected value are also obtained. Some extensions to time-non-homogeneous processes are then provided. Finally, certain additional results concerning the dete…
As a generalization of scale functions of spectrally negative Lévy processes, we define scale functions of general standard processes with no positive jumps. For this purpose, we utilize excursion measures. Using our new scale functions we study Laplace transforms of hitting times, potential measures and duality.
Summarizing results from Joseph Mecke's last fragmentary manuscripts, the generating function and the Laplace transform for nonnegative random variables are considered. The concept of thickening of a random variable, as an inverse operation to thinning (which is usually applied to point processes) is introduced, based on generating functions, and a characterization of thickable random variables is given. Further, some new relations between exponential distributions and their interpretation in terms of Poisson point processes are derived with the help of the Laplace transform.
We consider two independent random variables with the given tail asymptotic (e.g. power or exponential). We find tail asymptotic for their sum and product. This is done by some cumbersome but purely technical computations and requires the use of the Laplace method for asymptotic of integrals. We also recall the results for asymptotic of a self-similar locally stationary centered Gaussian process plus a deterministic drift; and we find the asymptotic for the same probability after multiplying the drift by a random variable, which is independent of this process. Keywords: tail asymptotic, Laplac…
We prove two martingale identities which involve exit times of Levy-driven Ornstein--Uhlenbeck processes. Using these identities we find an explicit formula for the Laplace transform of the exit time under the assumption that positive jumps of the Levy process are exponentially distributed.
We prove sharp estimates on heat kernels and Green functions for subordinate Markov processes with both discrete an continuous time, under relatively weak assumptions about original processes as well as Laplace exponents of subordinators. We also show stability of heat kernel estimates in the discrete settings.
We are interested by the rate of growth of increasing positive self-similar Markov processes (ipssMp) such that the subordinator associated to it via Lamperti's transformation has infinite mean. We prove that the logarithm of an ipssMp normalized by the logarithm of the time converges weakly, as the time tends to infinity, if and only if the Laplace exponent of the underlying subordinator is regularly varying at zero. Moreover, we prove that the regular variation at zero of the Laplace exponent is essentially nasc for the existence of a function that normalizes the logarithm of an ipssMp. We o…
One method to compute the price of an arithmetic Asian option in a Levy driven model is based on the exponential functional of the underlying Levy process: If we know the distribution of the exponential functional, we can calculate the price of the Asian option via the inverse Laplace transform. In this paper we consider pricing Asian options in a model driven by a general meromorphic Levy process. We prove that the exponential functional is equal in distribution to an infinite product of indepedent beta random variables, and its Mellin transform can be expressed as an infinite product of gamm…
In this note, we study the ultimate ruin probabilities of a real-valued L{é}vy process X with light-tailed negative jumps. It is well-known that, for such L{é}vy processes, the probability of ruin decreases as an exponential function with a rate given by the root of the Laplace exponent, when the initial value goes to infinity. Under the additional assumption that X has integrable positive jumps, we show how a finer analysis of the Laplace exponent gives in fact a complete description of the bounds on the probability of ruin for this class of L{é}vy processes. This leads to the identification …
We analyse an additive-increase and multiplicative-decrease (aka growth-collapse) process that grows linearly in time and that experiences downward jumps at Poisson epochs that are (deterministically) proportional to its present position. This process is used for example in modelling of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and can be viewed as a particular example of the so-called shot noise model, a basic tool in modeling earthquakes, avalanches and neuron firings. For this process, and also for its reflected versions, we consider one- and two-sided exit problems that concern the identificatio…
We prove asymptotic behaviour of transition density for a large class of spectrally one-sided Lévy processes of unbounded variation satisfying mild condition imposed on the second derivative of the Laplace exponent, or equivalently, on the real part of the characteristic exponent. We also provide sharp two-sided estimates on the density when restricted additionally to processes without Gaussian component.
For refracted spectrally negative Lévy processes, we identify expressions of several quantities related to Laplace transforms on their weighted occupation times until first exit times. Such quantities are expressed in terms of unique solutions to integral equations involving weight functions and scale functions for the associated spectrally negative Lévy processes. Previous results on refracted Lévy processes are recovered.
