We provide the increasing eigenfunctions associated to spectrally negative self-similar Feller semigroups, which have been introduced by Lamperti. These eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of a new family of power series which includes, for instance, the modified Bessel functions of the first kind and some generalizations of the Mittag-Leffler function. Then, we show that some specific combinations of these functions are Laplace transforms of self-decomposable or infinitely divisible distributions concentrated on the positive line with respect to the main argument, and, more surprisingly, with respect to a parameter of the process. In particular, this generalizes a result of Hartman (1976) obtained for the increasing solution of the Bessel differential equation. Finally, we compute, for some cases, the associated decreasing eigenfunctions and derive the Laplace transform of the exponential functionals of some spectrally negative Lévy processes with a negative first moment.
We consider the integro-differential equation ${\rm I}^α_{0+}f= x^m f$ on the half-line. We show that there exists a density solution, which is then unique and can be expressed in terms of the Beta distribution, if and only if $m> α.$ These density solutions extend the class of generalized one-sided stable distributions introduced in Schneider (1987) and more recently investigated in Pakes (2014). We study various analytical aspects of these densities, and we solve the open problems about infinite divisibility formulated in Pakes (2014).
We characterize the second order subexponentiality of an infinitely divisible distribution on the real line under an exponential moment assumption. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the difference between the tails of an infinitely divisible distribution and its Lévy measure. Moreover, we study the second order asymptotic behaviour of the tail of the $t$-th convolution power of an infinitely divisible distribution. The density version for a self-decomposable distribution on the real line without an exponential moment assumption is also given. Finally, the regularly varying case for a …
Semi-Markov processes are a generalization of Markov processes since the exponential distribution of time intervals is replaced with an arbitrary distribution. This paper provides an integro-differential form of the Kolmogorov's backward equations for a large class of homogeneous semi-Markov processes, having the form of an abstract Volterra integro-differential equation. An equivalent evolutionary (differential) form of the equations is also provided. Fractional equations in the time variable are a particular case of our analysis. Weak limits of semi-Markov processes are also considered and t…
Using an approach based, amongst other things, on Proposition 1 of Kaluza (1928), Goldie (1967) and, using a different approach based especially on zeros of polynomials, Steutel (1967) have proved that each nondegenerate distribution function (d.f.) $F$ (on $\RR$, the real line), satisfying $F(0-) = 0$ and $F(x) = F(0) + (1-F(0)) G(x)$, $x > 0$, where $G$ is the d.f. corresponding to a mixture of exponential distributions, is infinitely divisible. Indeed, Proposition 1 of Kaluza (1928) implies that any nondegenerate discrete probability distribution ${p_x: x= 0,1, ...}$ that is log-convex or, …
We consider the problem of valuation of American options written on dividend-paying assets whose price dynamics follows a multidimensional exponential Levy model. We carefully examine the relation between the option prices, related partial integro-differential variational inequalities and reflected backward stochastic differential equations. In particular, we prove regularity results for the value function and obtain the early exercise premium formula for broad class of payoff functions.
Stochastic modelling of fatigue (and other material's deterioration), as well as of cumulative damage in risk theory, are often based on compound sums of independent random variables, where the number of addends is represented by an independent counting process. We consider here a cumulative model where, instead of a renewal process (as in the Poisson case), a linear birth (or Yule) process is used. This corresponds to the assumption that the frequency of \textquotedblleft damage" increments accelerates according to the increasing number of \textquotedblleft damages". We start from the partial…
We study a spatial asymptotic behaviour at infinity of kernels $p_t(x)$ for convolution semigroups of nonlocal pseudo-differential operators. We give general and sharp sufficient conditions under which the limits $$ \lim_{r \to \infty} \frac{p_t(rθ-y)}{t \, ν(rθ)}, \quad t \in T, \ \ θ\in E, \ \ y \in \mathbb R^d, $$ exist and can be effectively computed. Here $ν$ is the corresponding Lévy density, $T \subset (0,\infty)$ is a bounded time-set and $E$ is a subset of the unit sphere in $\mathbb R^d$, $d \geq 1$. Our results are local on the unit sphere. They apply to a wide class of convolution …
The aim of this paper is to study the laws of the exponential functionals of the processes $X$ with independent increments, namely $$I_t= \int _0^t\exp(-X_s)ds, \,\, t\geq 0,$$ and also $$I_{\infty}= \int _0^{\infty}\exp(-X_s)ds.$$ Under suitable conditions we derive the integro-differential equations for the density of $I_t$ and $I_{\infty}$. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of smooth density of the laws of these functionals. In the particular case of Levy processes these equations can be simplified and, in a number of cases, solved explicitly.
We provide results relating to the integrability, uniform integrability and local integrability of exponential MAPs, which are natural extensions of exponential Levy models. Then, we use Mellin transform and partial integro-differential equation methods to value European options under a such a model. Finally, a comparison is made between the price of a European call option and that of an Asian call option.
We study the exponential functional $\int_0^\infty e^{-ξ_{s-}} \, dη_s$ of two one-dimensional independent Lévy processes $ξ$ and $η$, where $η$ is a subordinator. In particular, we derive an integro-differential equation for the density of the exponential functional whenever it exists. Further, we consider the mapping $Φ_ξ$ for a fixed Lévy process $ξ$, which maps the law of $η_1$ to the law of the corresponding exponential functional $\int_0^\infty e^{-ξ_{s-}} \, dη_s$, and study the behaviour of the range of $Φ_ξ$ for varying characteristics of $ξ$. Moreover, we derive conditions for selfde…
Motivated by a common Mathematical Finance topic, we discuss the reciprocal of the exit time from a cone of planar Brownian motion which also corresponds to the exponential functional of an associated Brownian motion. We prove a conjecture by Vakeroudis and Yor (2012) concerning infinite divisibility properties of this random variable and we present a novel simple proof of De Blassie's result (1987-1988) about the asymptotic behaviour of the distribution of the Bessel clock appearing in the skew-product representation of planar Brownian motion, for t large. Similar issues for the exponential f…
We propose a second order differential calculus to analyze the regularity and the stability properties of the distribution semigroup associated with McKean-Vlasov diffusions. This methodology provides second order Taylor type expansions with remainder for both the evolution semigroup as well as the stochastic flow associated with this class of nonlinear diffusions. Bismut-Elworthy-Li formulae for the gradient and the Hessian of the integro-differential operators associated with these expansions are also presented. The article also provides explicit Dyson-Phillips expansions and a refined analy…
We propose a new model for electricity pricing based on the price cap principle. The particularity of the model is that the asset price is an exponential functional of a jump Lévy process. This model can capture both mean reversion and jumps which are observed in electricity market. It is shown that the value of an European option of this asset is the unique viscosity solution of a partial integro-differential equation (PIDE). A numerical approximation of this solution by the finite differences method is provided. The consistency, stability and convergence results of the scheme are given. Nume…
The problem of disorder seeks to determine a stopping time which is as close as possible to the unknown time of ``disorder'' when the observed process changes its probability characteristics. We give a partial answer to this question for some special cases of Levy processes and present a complete solution of the Bayesian and variational problem for a compound Poisson process with exponential jumps. The method of proof is based on reducing the Bayesian problem to an integro-differential free-boundary problem where, in some cases, the smooth-fit principle breaks down and is replaced by the princ…
We present a treatment of non-Markovian character of memory by incorporating different forms of Mittag-Leffler (ML) function, which generally arises in the solution of fractional master equation, as different memory functions in the Generalized Kolmogorov-Feller Equation (GKFE). The cross-over from the short time (stretched exponential) to long time (inverse power law) approximations of the ML function incorporated in the GKFE is proven. We have found that the GKFE solutions are the same for negative exponential and for upto frst order expansion of stretched exponential function for very small…
Mean-field integro-differential equations are studied in an abstract framework, through couplings of the corresponding stochastic processes. In the perturbative regime, the equation is proven to admit a unique equilibrium, toward which the process converges exponentially fast. Similarly, in this case, the associated particle system is proven to converge toward its equilibrium at a rate independent from the number of particles.
Growth-fragmentation processes describe the evolution of systems of cells which grow continuously and fragment suddenly; they are used in models of cell division and protein polymerisation. Typically, we may expect that in the long run, the concentrations of cells with given masses increase at some exponential rate, and that, after compensating for this, they arrive at an asymptotic profile. Up to now, this question has mainly been studied for the average behavior of the system, often by means of a natural partial integro-differential equation and the associated spectral theory. However, the b…
The study deals with the ruin problem when an insurance company having two business branches, life insurance and non-life insurance, invests its reserve into a risky asset with the price dynamics given by a geometric Brownian motion. We prove a result on smoothness of the ruin probability as a function of the initial capital and obtain for it an integro-differential equation understood in the classical sense. For the case of exponentially distributed jumps we show that the survival probability is a solution of an ordinary differential equation of the 4th order. Asymptotic analysis of the latte…
We consider three classes of linear differential equations on distribution functions, with a fractional order $α\in [0,1].$ The integer case $α=1$ corresponds to the three classical extreme families. In general, we show that there is a unique distribution function solving these equations, whose underlying random variable is expressed in terms of an exponential random variable and an integral transform of an independent $α-$stable subordinator. From the analytical viewpoint, this law is in one-to-one correspondence with a Kilbas-Saigo function for the Weibull and Fréchet cases, and with a Le Ro…
The dynamics of opinion is a complex and interesting process, especially for the systems with large number individuals. It is usually hard to describe the evolutionary features of these systems. In this paper, we study the self excitation opinion model, which has been shown the superior performance in learning and predicting opinions. We study the asymptotic behaviors of this model for large number of individuals, and prove that the asymptotic behaviors of the model in which the interaction is a multivariate self excitation process with exponential function weight, can be described by a Mckean…
We establish a large deviation principle for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation, providing precise control over the left tail of the height distribution for narrow wedge initial condition. Our analysis exploits an exact connection between the KPZ one-point distribution and the Airy point process -- an infinite particle Coulomb-gas which arises at the spectral edge in random matrix theory. We develop the large deviation principle for the Airy point process and use it to compute, in a straight-forward and assumption-free manner, the KPZ large deviation rate function in terms of an electrosta…
