Let for a prime $p$, $\mathfrak{X}$ (respectively $\mathfrak{Y}$) be the class of all $p$-biprimitively finite (respectively periodic $p$-conjugatively biprimitively finite) groups and $G\in \mathfrak{X}$ (respectively $G\in \mathfrak{Y}$), $V$ be a periodic subgroup of $G$ having an ascending series of normal in $G$ subgroups such that each its factor is an almost layer-finite group or a locally graded group of finite special rank, or a $WF$-group with $min-q$ on all primes $q$. We prove that $G/V \in \mathfrak{X}$ (respectively $G/V\in \mathfrak{Y}$). Also some interesting and useful preliminary results are obtained.
A classification is given for factorizations of almost simple groups with at least one factor solvable, and it is then applied to characterize $s$-arc-transitive Cayley graphs of solvable groups, leading to a striking corollary: Except the cycles, every non-bipartite connected 3-arc-transitive Cayley graph of a solvable group is a cover of the Petersen graph or the Hoffman-Singleton graph.
This paper classifies the factorizations of almost simple groups with a factor having at least two nonsolvable composition factors. This together with a previous classification result of the authors reduces the factorization problem of almost simple groups to the case where both factors have a unique nonsolvable composition factor.
In 'The essentially chief series of a compactly generated locally compact group', an analogue of chief series for finite groups is discovered for compactly generated locally compact groups. In the present article, we show that chief factors necessarily exist in all locally compact groups with sufficiently rich topological structure. We also show that chief factors have one of seven types, and for all but one of these types, there is a decomposition into discrete groups, compact groups, and topologically simple groups. Our results for chief factors require exploring the theory developed in 'Chi…
This note deals with the computation of the factorization number $F_2(G)$ of a finite group $G$. By using the Möbius inversion formula, explicit expressions of $F_2(G)$ are obtained for two classes of finite abelian groups, improving the results of {\it Factorization numbers of some finite groups}, Glasgow Math. J. (2012).
We consider the structure of a finite groups having a normal series whose factors have bicyclic Sylow subgroups. In particular, we investigated groups of odd order and $A_4$-free groups with this property. Exact estimations of the derived length and nilpotent length of such groups are obtained.
In this short note we give a formula for the factorization number $F_2(G)$ of a finite rank $3$ abelian $p$-group $G$. This extends a result in our previous work \cite{9}.
In this paper we introduce and study the concept of cyclic factorization number of a finite group G. By using the Mobius inversion formula and other methods involving the cyclic subgroup structure, this is explicitly computed for some important classes of finite groups.
Let $G$ be a finite almost simple group with socle $G_0$. A (nontrivial) factorization of $G$ is an expression of the form $G=HK$, where the factors $H$ and $K$ are core-free subgroups. There is an extensive literature on factorizations of almost simple groups, with important applications in permutation group theory and algebraic graph theory. In a recent paper, Li and Xia describe the factorizations of almost simple groups with a solvable factor $H$. Several infinite families arise in the context of classical groups and in each case a solvable subgroup of $G_0$ containing $H \cap G_0$ is iden…
The subgroups $A$ and $B$ of a group~$G$ are called {\rm msp}-permutable, if the following statements hold: $AB$~is a subgroup of~$G$; the subgroups $P$ and $Q$ are mutually permutable, where $P$~is an arbitrary Sylow $p$-subgroup of~$A$ and $Q$~is an arbitrary Sylow $q$-subgroup of~$B$, ${p\neq q}$. In the present paper, we investigate groups that factorized by two {\rm msp}-permutable subgroups. In particular, the supersolubility of the product of two supersoluble {\rm msp}-permutable subgroups is proved.
We consider factorizations of a finite group $G$ into conjugate subgroups, $G=A^{x_{1}}\cdots A^{x_{k}}$ for $A\leq G$ and $x_{1},\ldots ,x_{k}\in G$, where $A$ is nilpotent or solvable. First we exploit the split $BN$-pair structure of finite simple groups of Lie type to give a unified self-contained proof that every such group is a product of four or three unipotent Sylow subgroups. Then we derive an upper bound on the minimal length of a solvable conjugate factorization of a general finite group. Finally, using conjugate factorizations of a general finite solvable group by any of its Carter…
In this paper, we study the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group. First we generalize a result by Manz and Wolf about the order of solvable linear groups of odd order. Then we use this result to find bounds for the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group.
A group $G$ is said to be factorized into subsets $A_1, A_2, \ldots, A_s\subseteq G$ if every element $g$ in $G$ can be uniquely represented as $g=g_1g_2\ldots g_s$, where $g_i\in A_i$, $i=1,2,\ldots,s$. We consider the following conjecture: for every finite group $G$ and every factorization $n=ab$ of its order, there is a factorization $G=AB$ with $|A|=a$ and $|B|=b$. We show that a minimal counterexample to this conjecture must be a nonabelian simple group and prove the conjecture for every finite group the nonabelian composition factors of which have orders less than $10\,000$.
Given a finite group $G$, let $P_G(s)$ be the probability that $s$ randomly chosen elements generate $G$, and let $H$ be a finite group with $P_G(s)=P_H(s)$. We show that if the nonabelian composition factors of $G$ and $H$ are $\mathrm{PSL}(2,p)$ for some non-Mersense prime $p\geq 5$, then $G$ and $H$ have the same non-Frattini chief factors.
In this paper we are concerned with finite soluble groups $G$ admitting a factorisation $G=AB$, with $A$ and $B$ proper subgroups having coprime order. We are interested in bounding the Fitting height of $G$ in terms of some group-invariants of $A$ and $B$: including the Fitting heights and the derived lengths.
Let G be a totally disconnected, locally compact group admitting a contractive automorphism f. We prove a Jordan-Holder theorem for series of f-stable closed subgroups of G, classify all possible composition factors and deduce consequences for the structure of G.
Let $N(n)$ denote the number of isomorphism types of groups of order $n$. We consider the integers $n$ that are products of at most $4$ not necessarily distinct primes and exhibit formulas for $N(n)$ for such $n$.
We continue the study of prime graphs of finite groups, also known as Gruenberg-Kegel graphs. The vertices of the prime graph of a finite group are the prime divisors of the group order, and two vertices $p$ and $q$ are connected by an edge if and only if there is an element of order $pq$ in the group. Prime graphs of solvable groups have been characterized in graph theoretical terms only, as have been the prime graphs of groups whose only nonsolvable composition factor is $A_5$. In this paper we classify the prime graphs of all groups whose composition factors have arithmetically small orders…

The groups whose orders factorise into at most four primes have been described (up to isomorphism) in various papers. Given such an order n, this paper exhibits a new explicit and compact determination of the isomorphism types of the groups of order n together with effective algorithms to enumerate, construct, and identify these groups. The algorithms are implemented for the computer algebra system GAP.
Let $\Bbb P$ be the set of all primes. A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is called {\it $\mathbb P$-subnormal} in $G$, if either $H=G$, or there exists a chain of subgroups $H=H_0\le H_1\le \ldots \le H_n=G, \ |H_{i}:H_{i-1}|\in \Bbb P, \ \forall i.$ A group $G$ is called {\it widely supersoluble}, $\mathrm{w}$-supersoluble for short, if every Sylow subgroup of $G$ is $\mathbb P$-subnormal in $G$. A group $G=AB$ with $\mathbb P$-subnormal $\mathrm{w}$-supersoluble subgroups $A$ and $B$ is studied. The structure of its $\mathrm{w}$-supersoluble residual is obtained. In particular, it coincides with…
Let $G$ be a finite group and $σ=\{σ_{i}|i\in I\}$ be a partition of the set of all primes $\mathbb{P}$, that is, $\mathbb{P}=\bigcup_{i\in I}σ_{i}$ and $σ_{i}\cap σ_{j}=\emptyset$ for all $i\neq j$. A chief factor $H/K$ of $G$ is said to be $σ$-central in $G$, if the semidirect product $(H/K)\rtimes(G/C_G(H/K))$ is a $σ_i$-group for some $i\in I$. The group $G$ is said to be $σ$-nilpotent if either $G=1$ or every chief factor of $G$ is $σ$-central. In this paper, we study the properties of a finite group $G=AB$, factorized by two $σ$-nilpotent subgroups $A$ and $B$, and also generalize some k…
Measure free factors are a generalization of the notion of free factors of a group, in a measure theoretic context. We find new families of cyclic measure free factors of free groups and some virtually free groups, following a question by D. Gaboriau.
We introduce the factorization graph of a finite group and study its connectedness and forbidden structures. We characterize all finite groups with connected factorization graphs and classify those with connected bipartite factorization graphs. Also, we obtain a classification of all groups with claw-free, $K_{1,4}$-free, and square-free factorization graphs, excluding the non-solvable groups in the latter case.
We define a probability measure preserving and r-discrete groupoid that is associated to every invariant point process on a locally compact and second countable group. This groupoid governs certain factor processes of the point process, in particular the existence of Cayley factor graphs. With this method we are able to show that point processes on amenable groups admit all (and only admit) Cayley factor graphs of amenable groups, and that the Poisson point process on groups with Kazhdan's Property (T) admits no Cayley factor graphs. This gives examples of pmp countable Borel equivalence relat…
We present here a shorter version of the proof of a result from our paper ``On a class of type II$_1$ factors with Betti numbers invariants'', showing that the von Neumann factor associated with the group $\Bbb Z^2 \rtimes SL(2, \Bbb Z)$ has trivial fundamental group.
Let $G$ denote the projective special linear group $\text{PSL}(2,q)$, for a prime power $q$. It is shown that a finite 2-subgroup of the group $V(\mathbb{Z}G)$ of augmentation 1 units in the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z}G$ of $G$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $G$. Furthermore, it is shown that a composition factor of a finite subgroup of $V(\mathbb{Z}G)$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $G$.
In this paper we introduce a new family of icc groups $Γ$ which satisfy the following product rigidity phenomenon, discovered in [DHI16] (see also [dSP17]): all tensor product decompositions of the II$_1$ factor $L(Γ)$ arise only from the canonical direct product decompositions of the underlying group $Γ$. Our groups are assembled from certain HNN-extensions and amalgamated free products and include many remarkable groups studied throughout mathematics such as graph product groups, poly-amalgam groups, Burger-Mozes groups, Higman group, various integral two-dimensional Cremona groups, etc. As …
A necessary condition for uniqueness of factorizations of elements of a finite group $G$ with factors belonging to a union of some conjugacy classes of $G$ is given. This condition is sufficient if the number of factors belonging to each conjugacy class is big enough. The result is applied to the problem on the number of irreducible components of the Hurwitz space of degree $d$ marked coverings of $\mathbb P^1$ with given Galois group $G$ and fixed collection of local monodromies.
In this note we give an example of a group which is locally embeddable into finite groups (in particular it is initially subamenable, sofic and hence hyperlinear) but does not have Kirchberg's factorization property. This group provides also an example of a sofic Kazhdan group which is not residually finite, answering a question of Elek and Szabo. We also give an example of a group which is not initially subamenable but hyperlinear. Finally, we point out a mistake in an assertion of Kirchberg and provide an example of a group which does not have the factorization property and is still a subgro…
Root subgroup factorization is a refinement of triangular (or LDU) factorization. For a complex reductive Lie group, and a choice of reduced factorization of the longest Weyl group element, the forward map from root subgroup coordinates to triangular coordinates is polynomial. We show that the inverse is rational. There is an algorithm for the inverse (involving LDU factorization), and a related explicit formula for Haar measure in root subgroup coordinates. In classical cases there are preferred reduced factorizations of the longest Weyl group elements, and conjecturally in these cases there …
In this paper we give a number of explicit constructions for II$_1$ factors and II$_1$ equivalence relations that have prescribed fundamental group and outer automorphism group. We construct factors and relations that have uncountable fundamental group different from $\IRpos$. In fact, given any II$_1$ equivalence relation, we construct a II$_1$ factor with the same fundamental group. Given any locally compact unimodular second countable group $G$, our construction gives a II$_1$ equivalence relation $\RelR$ whose outer automorphism group is $G$. The same construction does not give a II$_1$ fa…
In this article we provide the first examples of property (T) $\rm II_1$ factors $\mathcal N$ with trivial fundamental group, $\mathcal F (\mathcal N)=1$. Our examples arise as group factors $\mathcal N=\mathcal L(G)$ where $G$ belong to two distinct families of property (T) groups previously studied in the literature: the groups introduced by Valette in \cite{Va04} and the ones introduced recently in \cite{CDK19} using the Belegradek-Osin Rips construction from \cite{BO06}. In particular, our results provide a continuum of explicit pairwise non-isomorphic property (T) factors.
We classify those 2-groups G which factorise as a product of two disjoint cyclic subgroups A and B, transposed by an automorphism of order 2. The case where G is metacyclic having been dealt with elsewhere, we show that for each e>2 there are exactly three such non-metacyclic groups G with $|A|=|B|=2^e$, and for e=2 there is one. These groups appear in a classification by Berkovich and Janko of 2-groups with one non-metacyclic maximal subgroup; we enumerate these groups, give simpler presentations for them, and determine their automorphism groups.
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group. Assume that $G(\bb R)$ has no compact factors and let $Γ$ be a torsion-free uniform lattice subgroup of $G(\bb R)$. Then $Γ$ contains a malnormal abelian subgroup $A$. This implies that the $\tto$ factor $\vn(Γ)$ contains a masa $\fk A$ with Pukánszky invariant $\{\infty\}$.
We prove that the only finite factor-representations of the Higman-Thompson groups $\{F_{n,r}\}$, $ \{G_{n,r}\}$ are the regular representations and scalar representations arising from group abelianizations. As a corollary, we obtain that any measure-preserving ergodic action of a simple Higman-Thompson group must be essentially free. Finite factor representations of other classes of groups are also discussed.
For a finite nonabelian group $G$ let $\rat(G)$ be the largest ratio of degrees of two nonlinear irreducible characters of $G$. We show that nonabelian composition factors of $G$ are controlled by $\rat(G)$ in some sense. Specifically, if $S$ different from the simple linear groups $\PSL_2(q)$ is a nonabelian composition factor of $G$, then the order of $S$ and the number of composition factors of $G$ isomorphic to $S$ are both bounded in terms of $\rat(G)$. Furthermore, when the groups $\PSL_2(q)$ are not composition factors of $G$, we prove that $|G:\Oinfty(G)|\leq \rat(G)^{21}$ where $\Oinf…
In finite group theory, chief factors play an important and well-understood role in the structure theory. We here develop a theory of chief factors for Polish groups. In the development of this theory, we prove a version of the Schreier refinement theorem. We also prove a trichotomy for the structure of topologically characteristically simple Polish groups. The development of the theory of chief factors requires two independently interesting lines of study. First we consider injective, continuous homomorphisms with dense normal image. We show such maps admit a canonical factorization via a sem…
For a finite non-abelian group $G$ let $\rat(G)$ denote the largest ratio of degrees of two nonlinear irreducible characters of $G$. We prove that the number of non-abelian composition factors of $G$ is bounded above by $1.8\ln(\rat(G))+1.3$.
In this note we give a new proof of the fact that an elementary subgroup (in the sense of first-order theory) of a non abelian free group $\mathbb{F}$ must be a free factor. The proof is based on definability of orbits of elements of under automorphisms of $\mathbb{F}$ fixing a large enough subset of $\mathbb{F}$.
A pro-Lie group $G$ is a topological group such that $G$ is isomorphic to the projective limit of all quotient groups $G/N$ (modulo closed normal subgroups $N$) such that $G/N$ is a finite dimensional real Lie group. A topological group is almost connected if the totally disconnected factor group $G_t:= G/G_0$ of $G$ modulo the identity component $G_0$ is compact. In this case it is straightforward that each Lie group quotient $G/N$ of $G$ has finitely many components. However, in spite of a comprehensive literature on pro-Lie groups, the following theorem, proved here, was not available until…
We consider II$_1$ factors of the form $M=\bar{\bigotimes}_{G}N\rtimes G$, where either i) $N$ is a non-hyperfinite II$_1$ factor and $G$ is an ICC amenable group or ii) $N$ is a weakly rigid II$_1$ factor and $G$ is ICC group and where $G$ acts on $\bar{\bigotimes}_{G}N$ by Bernoulli shifts. We prove that isomorphism of two such factors implies cocycle conjugacy of the corresponding Bernoulli shift actions. In particular, the groups acting are isomorphic. As a consequence, we can distinguish between certain classes of group von Neumann algebras associated to wreath product groups.
We provide a unified and self-contained treatment of several of the recent uniqueness theorems for the group measure space decomposition of a II_1 factor. We single out a large class of groups Γ, characterized by a one-cohomology property, and prove that for every free ergodic probability measure preserving action of Γthe associated II_1 factor has a unique group measure space Cartan subalgebra up to unitary conjugacy. Our methods follow closely a recent article of Chifan-Peterson, but we replace the usage of Peterson's unbounded derivations by Thomas Sinclair's dilation into a one-parameter g…
We prove that any II$_1$ factor $L^{\infty}(X)\rtimesΓ$ arising from a compact, free, ergodic, probability measure preserving action of a countable group $Γ$ with positive first $\ell^2$-Betti number, has a unique group measure space Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy.
We provide an alternative proof for the extreme amenability of the unitary group of the hyperfinite II${}_1$-factor von Neumann algebra, endowed with the strong operator topology.
We prove that every group measure space II$_1$ factor $L^{\infty}(X)\rtimesΓ$ coming from a free ergodic rigid (in the sense of [Po01]) probability measure preserving action of a group $Γ$ with positive first $\ell^2$--Betti number, has a unique group measure space Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy. We deduce that many $\Cal H\Cal T$ factors, including the II$_1$ factors associated with the actions $Γ\curvearrowright \Bbb T^2$ and $Γ\curvearrowright$ SL$_2(\Bbb R)$/SL$_2(\Bbb Z)$, where $Γ$ is a non--amenable subgroup of SL$_2(\Bbb Z)$, have a unique group measure space Cartan subalge…
We prove that for any free ergodic probability measure preserving action \F_n \actson (X,μ) of a free group on n generators \F_n, 2 \leq n \leq \infty, the associated group measure space II_1 factor $L^\infty(X) \rtimes \F_n$ has L^\infty(X) as its unique Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy. We deduce that group measure space II_1 factors arising from actions of free groups with different number of generators are never isomorphic. We actually prove unique Cartan decomposition results for II_1 factors arising from arbitrary actions of a rather large family of groups, including all free p…
