We consider a notion of balanced metrics for triples (X,L,E) which depend on a parameter α, where X is smooth complex manifold with an ample line bundle L and E is a holomorphic vector bundle over X. For generic choice of α, we prove that the limit of a convergent sequence of balanced metrics leads to a Hermitian-Einstein metric on E and a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric in c_1(L). For special values of α, limits of balanced metrics are solutions of a system of coupled equations relating a Hermitian-Einstein metric on E and a Kähler metric in c_1(L). For this, we compute the top two terms of the density of states expansion of the Bergman kernel of E \otimes L^k.
Given a compact complex $n$-fold $X$ satisfying the $\partial\bar\partial$-lemma and supposed to have a trivial canonical bundle $K_X$ and to admit a balanced (=semi-Kähler) Hermitian metric $ω$, we introduce the concept of deformations of $X$ that are {\bf co-polarised} by the balanced class $[ω^{n-1}]\in H^{n-1,\,n-1}(X,\,\C)\subset H^{2n-2}(X,\,\C)$ and show that the resulting theory of balanced co-polarised deformations is a natural extension of the classical theory of Kähler polarised deformations in the context of Calabi-Yau or even holomorphic symplectic compact complex manifolds. The c…
Let $E\to M$ be a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kaehler manifold $(M, ω)$. We prove that if $E$ admits a $ω$-balanced metric (in X. Wang's terminology) then it is unique. This result together with a result of L. Biliotti and A. Ghigi implies the existence and uniqueness of $ω$-balanced metrics of certain direct sums of irreducible homogeneous vector bundles over rational homogeneous varieties. We finally apply our result to show the rigidity of $ω$-balanced Kaehler maps into Grassmannians.
In \cite{D3}, Donaldson defines a dynamical system on the space of Fubini-Study metrics on a polarized compact Kähler manifold. Sano proved that if there exists a balanced metric for the polarization, then this dynamical system always converges to the balanced metric (\cite{S}). In \cite{DKLR}, Douglas, et. al., conjecture that the same holds in the case of vector bundles. In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to their conjecture.
In 1980, I. Morrison proved that slope stability of a vector bundle of rank 2 over a compact Riemann surface implies Chow stability of the projectivization of the bundle with respect to certain polarizations. Using the notion of balanced metrics and recent work of Donaldson, Wang, and Phong-Sturm, we show that the statement holds for higher rank vector bundles over compact algebraic manifolds of arbitrary dimension that admit constant scalar curvature metric and have discrete automorphism group.
Let $E\rightarrow M$ be a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kaehler manifold $(M, ω)$ and let $E=E_1\oplus... \oplus E_m\rightarrow M$ be its decomposition into irreducible factors. Suppose that each $E_j$ admits a $ω$-balanced metric in Donaldson-Wang terminology. In this paper we prove that $E$ admits a unique $ω$-balanced metric if and only if $\frac{r_j}{N_j}=\frac{r_k}{N_k}$ for all $j, k=1, ..., m$, where $r_j$ denotes the rank of $E_j$ and $N_j=\dim H^0(M, E_j)$. We apply our result to the case of homogeneous vector bundles over a rational homogeneous variety $(M, ω)$ and we show…
In 1980, I. Morrison proved that slope stability of a vector bundle of rank 2 over a compact Riemann surface implies Chow stability of the projectivization of the bundle with respect to certain polarizations. We generalized Morrison's result to higher rank vector bundles over compact algebraic manifolds of arbitrary dimension that admit constant scalar curvature metric and have discrete automorphism group. In this article, we give a simple proof for polarizations $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}E^*}(d)\otimes π^* L^k$, where $d$ is a positive integer, $k \gg 0$ and the base manifold is a compact Riema…
We prove that polarised manifolds that admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric satisfy a condition we call slope semistability. That is, we define the slope $μ$ for a projective manifold and for each of its subschemes, and show that if $X$ is cscK then $μ(Z)\leμ(X)$ for all subschemes $Z$. This gives many examples of manifolds with Kähler classes which do not admit cscK metrics, such as del Pezzo surfaces and projective bundles. If $\PP(E)\to B$ is a projective bundle which admits a cscK metric in a rational Kähler class with sufficiently small fibres, then $E$ is a slope semist…
A twisted Higgs bundle on a Kähler manifold $X$ is a pair $(E,ϕ)$ consisting of a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ and a holomorphic bundle morphism $ϕ\colon M\otimes E \to E$ for some holomorphic vector bundle $M$. Such objects were first considered by Hitchin when $X$ is a curve and $M$ is the tangent bundle of $X$, and also by Simpson for higher dimensional base. The Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for such pairs states that $(E,ϕ)$ is polystable if and only if $E$ admits a hermitian metric solving the Hitchin equation. This correspondence is a powerful tool to decide whether there exists a s…
We provide an algebraic framework for quantization of Hermitian metrics that are solutions of the Hitchin equation for Higgs bundles over a projective manifold. Using Geometric Invariant Theory, we introduce a notion of balanced metrics in this context. We show that balanced metrics converge at the quantum limit towards the solution of the Hitchin equation. We relate the existence of balanced metrics to the Gieseker stability of the Higgs bundle.
In the previous article (\cite{S}), we proved that slope stability of a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a polarized manifold $(X,L)$ implies Chow stability of $(\mathbb{P}E^*,\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}E^*}(1)\otimes π^* L^k)$ for $k \gg 0$ if the base manifold has no nontrivial holomorphic vector field and admits a constant scalar curvature metric in the class of $2πc_{1}(L)$. In this article using asymptotic expansions of Bergman kernel on $\textrm{Sym}^d E$, we generalize the main theorem of \cite{S} to polarizations $(\mathbb{P}E^*,\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}E^*}(d)\otimes π^* L^k)$ for $k \gg …
We determine the 6-dimensional solvmanifolds admitting an invariant complex structure with holomorphically trivial canonical bundle. Such complex structures are classified up to isomorphism, and the existence of strong Kähler with torsion (SKT), generalized Gauduchon, balanced and strongly Gauduchon metrics is studied. As an application we construct a holomorphic family $(M,J_a)$ of compact complex manifolds such that $(M,J_a)$ satisfies the $\partial\bar\partial$-Lemma and admits a balanced metric for any $a\not=0$, but the central limit neither satisfies the $\partial\bar\partial$-Lemma nor …
Given a $\partial\bar\partial$-manifold $X$ with trivial canonical bundle and carrying a metric $ω$ such that $\partial\bar\partialω=0$, we introduce the concept of small deformations of $X$ polarised by the Aeppli cohomology class $[ω]_A$ of an SKT metric $ω$. There is a correspondence between the manifolds polarised by $[ω]_A$ in the Kuranishi family of $X$ and the Bott-Chern classes that are primitive in a sense that we define. We also investigate the existence of a primitive element in an arbitrary Bott-Chern primitive class and compare the metrics on the base space of the subfamily of man…
We present some results that complement our prequels [arXiv:1809.08425,arXiv:1907.05770] on holomorphic vector bundles. We apply the method of the Quot-scheme limit of Fubini-Study metrics developed therein to provide a generalisation to the singular case of the result originally obtained by X.W. Wang for the smooth case, which states that the existence of balanced metrics is equivalent to the Gieseker stability of the vector bundle. We also prove that the Bergman 1-parameter subgroups form subgeodesics in the space of hermitian metrics. This paper also contains a review of techniques develope…
Let $X$ be a compact, Kähler, Calabi-Yau threefold and suppose $X\mapsto \underline{X}\leadsto X_t$ , for $t\in Δ$, is a conifold transition obtained by contracting finitely many disjoint $(-1,-1)$ curves in $X$ and then smoothing the resulting ordinary double point singularities. We show that, for $|t|\ll 1$ sufficiently small, the tangent bundle $T^{1,0}X_{t}$ admits a Hermitian-Yang-Mills metric $H_t$ with respect to the conformally balanced metrics constructed by Fu-Li-Yau. Furthermore, we describe the behavior of $H_t$ near the vanishing cycles of $X_t$ as $t\rightarrow 0$.
We find a new obstruction to the existence of solutions of the Hull-Strominger system, which goes beyond the balanced property of the Calabi-Yau manifold $(X,Ω)$ and the Mumford-Takemoto slope stability of the bundle over it. The basic principle is the construction of a (possibly indefinite) Hermitian-Einstein metric on the holomorphic string algebroid associated to a solution of the system, provided that the connection $\nabla$ on the tangent bundle is Hermitian-Yang Mills. Using this, we define a family of Futaki invariants obstructing the existence of solutions in a given balanced class. Ou…
The Donaldson-Fujiki Kähler reduction of the space of compatible almost complex structures, leading to the interpretation of the scalar curvature of Kähler metrics as a moment map, can be lifted canonically to a hyperkähler reduction. Donaldson proposed to consider the corresponding vanishing moment map conditions as (fully nonlinear) analogues of Hitchin's equations, for which the underlying bundle is replaced by a polarised manifold. However this construction is well understood only in the case of complex curves. In this paper we study Donaldson's hyperkähler reduction on abelian varieties a…
We first study the degeneration of a sequence of Hermitian-Yang-Mills metrics with respect to a sequence of balanced metrics on a Calabi-Yau threefold $\hat{X}$ that degenerates to the balanced metric constructed by Fu, Li, and Yau on the complement of finitely many (-1,-1)-curves in $\hat{X}$. Then under some assumptions we show the existence of Hermitian-Yang-Mills metrics on bundles over a family of threefolds $X_t$ with trivial canonical bundles obtained by performing conifold transitions on $\hat{X}$.
We prove a general criterion to establish existence and uniqueness of a short-time solution to an evolution equation involving "closed" sections of a vector bundle, generalizing a method used recently by Bryant and Xu for studying the Laplacian flow in G_2-geometry. We apply this theorem in balanced geometry introducing a natural extension of the Calabi flow to the balanced case. We show that this flow has always a unique short-time solution belonging to the same Bott-Chern cohomology class of the initial balanced structure and that it preserves the Kaehler condition. Finally we study explicit…
We review some constructions and properties of complex manifolds admitting pluriclosed and balanced metrics. We prove that for a 6-dimensional solvmanifold endowed with an invariant complex structure J having holomorphically trivial canonical bundle the pluriclosed flow has a long time solution for every invariant initial datum. Moreover, we state a new conjecture about the existence of balanced and SKT metrics on compact complex manifolds. We show that the conjecture is true for nilmanifolds of dimension 6 and 8 and for 6-dimensional solvmanifolds with holomorphically trivial canonical bundle…
Let $(M,\nabla,\langle\;,\;\rangle)$ be a manifold endowed with a flat torsionless connection $\nabla$ and a Riemannian metric $\langle\;,\;\rangle$ and $(T^kM)_{k\geq1}$ the sequence of tangent bundles given by $T^kM=T(T^{k-1}M)$ and $T^1M=TM$. We show that, for any $k\geq1$, $T^kM$ carries a Hermitian structure $(J_k,g_k)$ and a flat torsionless connection $\nabla^k$ and when $M$ is a Lie group and $(\nabla,\langle\;,\;\rangle)$ are left invariant there is a Lie group structure on each $T^kM$ such that $(J_k,g_k,\nabla^k)$ are left invariant. It is well-known that $(TM,J_1,g_1)$ is Kähler if…
We study the existence of three classes of Hermitian metrics on certain types of compact complex manifolds. More precisely, we consider balanced, SKT and astheno-Kähler metrics. We prove that the twistor spaces of compact hyperkähler and negative quaternionic-Kähler manifolds do not admit astheno-Kähler metrics. Then we provide examples of astheno-Kähler structures on toric bundles over Kähler manifolds. In particular, we find examples of compact complex non-Kähler manifolds which admit a balanced and an astheno-Kähler metrics, thus answering to a question in [52] (see also [24]). One of these…
We introduce two notions of hyperbolicity for not necessarily Kähler $n$-dimensional compact complex manifolds $X$. The first, called {\it balanced hyperbolicity}, generalises Gromov's Kähler hyperbolicity by means of Gauduchon's balanced metrics. The second, called {\it divisorial hyperbolicity}, generalises the Brody hyperbolicity by ruling out the existence of non-degenerate holomorphic maps from $\C^{n-1}$ to $X$ that have what we term a subexponential growth. Our main result in the first part of the paper asserts that every balanced hyperbolic $X$ is also divisorially hyperbolic. We provi…
We introduce a notion of Gieseker stability for a filtered holomorphic vector bundle $F$ over a projective manifold. We relate it to an analytic condition in terms of hermitian metrics on $F$ coming from a construction of the Geometric Invariant Theory (G.I.T). These metrics are balanced in the sense of S.K. Donaldson. We prove that if there is a $τ$-Hermite-Einstein metric $h_{HE}$ on $F$, then there exists a sequence of such balanced metrics that converges and its limit is $h_{HE}$. As a corollary, we obtain an approximation theorem for coupled Vortex equations that cover in particular the c…
We study the Strominger system with fixed balanced class. We show that classes which are the square of a Kähler metric admit solutions to the system for vector bundles satisfying the necessary conditions. Solutions are constructed by deforming a Calabi-Yau metric and a Hermitian-Yang-Mills metric along a path inside the given cohomology class.
A Hermitian metric on a complex manifold of complex dimension $n$ is called {\em astheno-Kähler} if its fundamental $2$-form $F$ satisfies the condition $\partial \overline \partial F^{n - 2} =0$. If $n =3$, then the metric is {\em strong KT}, i.e. $F$ is $\partial \overline \partial$-closed. By using blow-ups and the twist construction, we construct simply-connected astheno-Kähler manifolds of complex dimension $n > 3$. Moreover, we construct a family of astheno-Kähler (non strong KT) $2$-step nilmanifolds of complex dimension $4$ and we study deformations of strong KT structures on nilmanifo…
Let X be a smooth subvariety of CP^N. We study a flow, called balancing flow, on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of X, which attempts to deform the given embedding into a balanced one. If L->X is an ample line bundle, considering embeddings via H^0(L^k) gives a sequence of balancing flows. We prove that, provided these flows are started at appropriate points, they converge to Calabi flow for as long as it exists. This result is the parabolic analogue of Donaldson's theorem relating balanced embeddings to metrics with constant scalar curvature [JDG 59(3):479-522, 2001]. In our p…
We consider applications of the theory of balanced weight filtrations and iterated logarithms, initiated in arXiv:1706.01073, to PDEs. The main result is a complete description of the asymptotics of the Yang--Mills flow on the space of metrics on a holomorphic bundle over a Riemann surface. A key ingredient in the argument is a monotonicity property of the flow which holds in arbitrary dimension. The A-side analog is a modified curve shortening flow for which we provide a heuristic calculation in support of a detailed conjectural picture.
In this paper, we characterize Riemannian 4-manifold in terms of its almost Hermitian twistor spaces $(Z,g_t,\mathbb{J}_{\pm})$. Some special metric conditions (including Balanced metric condition, first Gauduchon metric condition) on $(Z,g_t,\mathbb{J}_{\pm})$ are studied. For the first Chern form of a natural unitary connection on the vertical tangent bundle over the twistor space $Z$, we can recover J. Fine and D. Panov's result on the condition of the first Chern form being symplectic and P. Gauduchon's result on the condition of the first Chern form being a (1,1)-form respectively, by usi…
On a Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ we extend the known analytic results on Yang-Mills connections to the class of connections called $Ω$-Yang-Mills connections, where $Ω$ is a smooth, not necessarily closed, $(n-4)$-form. Special cases include $Ω$-anti-self-dual connections and Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections over general complex manifolds. By a key observation, a weak compactness result is obtained for moduli space of smooth $Ω$-Yang-Mills connections with uniformly $L^2$ bounded curvature, and it can be improved in the case of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections over general complex man…
We investigate the geometry of Hermitian manifolds endowed with a compact Lie group action by holomorphic isometries with principal orbits of codimension one. In particular, we focus on a special class of these manifolds constructed by following Bérard-Bergery which includes, among the others, the holomorphic line bundles on $\mathbb C\mathbb P^{m-1}$, the linear Hopf manifolds and the Hirzebruch surfaces. We characterize their invariant special Hermitian metrics, such as balanced, Kähler-like, pluriclosed, locally conformally Kähler, Vaisman, Gauduchon. Furthermore, we construct new examples …
Let L be an ample bundle over a compact complex manifold X. Fix a Hermitian metric in L whose curvature defines a Kähler metric on X. The Hessian of Mabuchi energy is a fourth-order elliptic operator D on functions which arises in the study of scalar curvature. We quantise D by the Hessian E(k) of balancing energy, a function appearing in the study of balanced embeddings. E(k) is defined on the space of Hermitian endomorphisms of H^0(X, L^k), endowed with the L^2-innerproduct. We first prove that the leading order term in the asymptotic expansion of E(k) is D. We next show that if Aut(X,L) is …
