We introduce a notion of Gieseker stability for a filtered holomorphic vector bundle $F$ over a projective manifold. We relate it to an analytic condition in terms of hermitian metrics on $F$ coming from a construction of the Geometric Invariant Theory (G.I.T). These metrics are balanced in the sense of S.K. Donaldson. We prove that if there is a $τ$-Hermite-Einstein metric $h_{HE}$ on $F$, then there exists a sequence of such balanced metrics that converges and its limit is $h_{HE}$. As a corollary, we obtain an approximation theorem for coupled Vortex equations that cover in particular the cases of Hermite-Einstein equations, Garcia-Prada and Bradlows's coupled Vortex equations and special Vafa-Witten equations.
We survey some recent developments in the study of canonical Kähler metrics on algebraic varieties and their relation with stability in algebraic geometry.
Let $X$ be a canonically polarized variety, i.e. a complex projective variety such that its canonical class $K_{X}$ defines an ample $\Q-$line bundle, and satisfying the conditions $G_1$ and $S_2$. Our main result says that $X$ admits a Kähler-Einstein metric iff $X$ has semi-log canonical singularities i.e. iff $X$ is a stable variety in the sense of Kollár-Shepherd-Barron and Alexeev (whose moduli spaces are known to be compact). By definition a Kähler-Einstein metric in this singular context simply means a Kähler-Einstein on the regular locus of $X$ with volume equal to the algebraic volume…
This note gives a simple formula for the unique asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau metrics on the canonical bundle of a flag variety known to exist by the work of R. Goto and others. This is done by generalizing the well known Calabi Ansatz to general Kähler classes. We give some examples of explicit families, in particular, a formula for the two dimensional family of asymptotically conical metrics on the canonical bundle of $F_{1,2}$.
We derive general expressions for the Kaehler form of the L^2-metric in terms of standard 2-forms on vortex moduli spaces. In the case of abelian vortices in gauged linear sigma-models, this allows us to compute explicitly the Kaehler class of the L^2-metric. As an application we compute the total volume of the moduli space of abelian semi-local vortices. In the strong coupling limit, this then leads to conjectural formulae for the volume of the space of holomorphic maps from a compact Riemann surface to projective space. Finally we show that the localization results of Samols in the abelian H…
We study the canonical metric on a compact Riemann surface of genus at least two. While it is known that the canonical metric is of nonpositive curvature, we show that its Gaussian curvatures are not bounded away from zero nor negative infinity when the surface is close to the compactification divisor of Riemann's moduli space.
We prove the equivalences of several classical complete metrics on the Teichmüller and the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces. We use as bridge two new Kähler metrics, the Ricci metric and the perturbed Ricci metric and prove that the perturbed Ricci metric is a complete Kähler metric with bounded negative holomorphic sectional curvature and bounded bisectional and Ricci curvature. As consequences we prove that these two new metrics are equivalent to several famous classical metrics, which inlcude the Teichmüller metric, therefore the Kabayashi metric, the Kähler-Einstein metric and the McMulle…
In this paper we address two problems concerning a family of domains $M_Ω(μ) \subset \C^n$, called Cartan-Hartogs domains, endowed with a natural Kaehler metric $g(μ)$. The first one is determining when the metric $g(μ)$ is extremal (in the sense of Calabi), while the second one studies when the coefficient $a_2$ in the Engliš expansion of Rawnsley $ε$-function associated to $g(μ)$ is constant.
A canonical hyperkaehler metric on the total space $T^*M$ of a cotangent bundle to a complex manifold $M$ has been constructed recently by the author (see alg-geom/9710026). This paper presents the results of alg-geom/9710026 in a streamlined and simplified form. The only new result is an explicit formula obtained for the case when $M$ is an Hermitian symmetric space.
We study one parameter degenerations of complex projective manifolds by introducing certain type of Hodge metrics coming from the pluricanonical forms. We show that degenerations with at most canonical singularities are all in the finite distance boundary of moduli spaces. We also propose the converse to be true in the sense that finite distance degenerations admit birational models which have at most canonical singularities in the degenerate fiber. We verify this for curves and show that the Calabi-Yau case follows from the minimal model conjecture.
In this paper we continue our study on the canonical metrics on the Teichmüller and the moduli space of Riemman surfaces. We first prove the equivalence of the Bergman metric and the Carathéodory metric to the Kähler-Einstein metric, solving another old conjecture of Yau. We then prove that the Ricci curvature of the perturbed Ricci metric has negative upper and lower bounds, and it also has bounded geometry. Then we study in detail the boundary behaviors of the Kähler-Einstein metric and prove that it has bounded geometry, and all of the covariant derivatives of its curvature are uniformly bo…
In this paper, we study the boundary behavior of the negatively curved Kähler-Einstein metric attached to a log canonical pair $(X,D)$ such that $K_X+D$ is ample. In the case where $X$ is smooth and $D$ has simple normal crossings support (but possibly negative coefficients), we provide a very precise estimate on the potential of the KE metric near the boundary $D$. In the more general singular case ($D$ being assumed effective though), we show that the KE metric has mixed cone and cusp singularities near $D$ on the snc locus of the pair. As a corollary, we derive the behavior in codimension o…
We prove the existence of a (unique) S^1-invariant Ricci-flat Kaehler metric on a neighbourhood of the zero section in the canonical bundle of a real-analytic Kaehler manifold X, extending the metric on X.
Canonical metrics and conformal invariants are presented for closed oriented even-dimensional manifolds with non-degenerate conformal structures and in particular for compact Riemann surfaces.
In this paper we will discuss local coordinates canonically corresponding to a Kahler metric. We will also discuss and prove the $C^\infty$ convergence of Bergman metrics following Tian's result on $C^2$ convergence of Bergman metrics. At the end, we present an interesting characterization of ample line bundle that could be useful in arithmetic geometry.
In this note we quantize the usual symplectic (Kähler) form on the vortex moduli space by modifying the Quillen metric of the Quillen determinant line bundle.
We demonstrate that the five vortex equations recently introduced by Manton ariseas symmetry reductions of the anti-self-dual Yang--Mills equations in four dimensions. In particular the Jackiw--Pi vortex and the Ambjørn--Olesen vortex correspond to the gauge group $SU(1, 1)$, and respectively the Euclidean or the $SU(2)$ symmetry groups acting with two-dimensional orbits. We show how to obtain vortices with higher vortex numbers, by superposing vortex equations of different types. Finally we use the kinetic energy of the Yang--Mills theory in 4+1 dimensions to construct a metric on vortex modu…
There are described equations for a pair comprising a Riemannian metric and a Killing field on a surface that contain as special cases the Einstein Weyl equations (in the sense of D. Calderbank) and a real version of a special case of the Abelian vortex equations, and it is shown that the property that a metric solve these equations is preserved by the Ricci flow. The equations are solved explicitly, and among the metrics obtained are all steady gradient Ricci solitons (e.g. the the cigar soliton) and the sausage metric; there are found other examples of eternal, ancient, and immortal Ricci fl…
Let $\text{Bl}_{\mathbb{P}^1} \mathbb{P}^n$ be a Kähler manifold obtained by blowing up a complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ along a line $\mathbb{P}^1$. We prove that $\text{Bl}_{\mathbb{P}^1} \mathbb{P}^n$ does not admit constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics in any rational Kähler class, but admits extremal metrics, with an explicit formula in action-angle coordinates, in Kähler classes that are close to the pullback of the Fubini--Study class.
In the present paper and the companion paper [8] a probabilistic (statistical mechanical) approach to the study of canonical metrics and measures on a complex algebraic variety X is introduced. On any such variety with positive Kodaira dimension a canonical (birationally invariant) random point processes is defined and shown to converge in probability towards a canonical deterministic measure on X, coinciding with the canonical measure of Song-Tian and Tsuji. The proof is based on new large deviation principle for Gibbs measures with singular Hamiltonians which relies on an asymptotic submean …
In this paper, by applying Greene-Shapere-Vafa-Yau semi-flat metric, we give a new proof of closed formula of Weil-Petersson metric on moduli space of Calabi-Yau varieties.
We numerically calculate Perelman's entropy for a variety of canonical metrics on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$-bundles over products of Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds. The metrics investigated are Einstein metrics, Kähler-Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein metrics. The calculation of the entropy allows a rough picture of how the Ricci flow behaves on each of the manifolds in question.
A $(J^{2}=\pm 1)$-metric manifold has an almost complex or almost product structure $J$ and a compatible metric $g$. We show that there exists a canonical involution in the set of connections on such a manifold, which allows to define a projection over the set of connections adapted to $J$. This projection sends the Levi Civita connection onto the first canonical connection. In the almost Hermitian case, it also sends the $\nabla^{-}$ connection onto the Chern connection, thus applying the line of metric connections defined by $\nabla ^{-}$ and the Levi Civita connections onto the line of cano…
An $n$-dimensional Hartogs domain $D_F$ with strongly pseudoconvex boundary can be equipped with a natural Kaehler metric $g_F$. This paper contains two results. In the first one we prove that if $g_F$ is an extremal Kaehler metric then $(D_F, g_F)$ is holomorphically isometric to an open subset of the $n$-dimensional complex hyperbolic space. In the second one we prove the same assertion under the assumption that there exists a real holomorphic vector field $X$ on $D_F$ such that $(g_F, X)$ is a Kaehler-Ricci soliton.
An asymptotic formula for the Tian-Paul CM-line of a flat family blown-up at a flat closed sub-scheme is given. As an application we prove that the blow-up of a polarized manifold along a (relatively) Chow-unstable submanifold admits no (extremal) constant scalar curvature Kahler metrics in classes making the exceptional divisors sufficiently small. Moreover a geometric characterization of relatively Chow-unstable configuration of points in the projective space is given. From this we get new examples of classes admitting no extremal Kahler metric also in the case of the projective plane blown-…
The existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on a compact Kähler manifold has been the subject of intensive study over the last few decades, following Yau's solution to Calabi's conjecture. The Ricci flow, introduced by Richard Hamilton has become one of the most powerful tools in geometric analysis. We study the Kähler-Ricci flow on minimal surfaces of Kodaira dimension one and show that the flow collapses and converges to a unique canonical metric on its canonical model. Such a canonical is a generalized Kähler-Einstein metric. Combining the results of Cao, Tsuji, Tian and Zhang, we give a metri…
The canonical-type connection on the almost contact manifolds with B-metric is constructed. It is proved that its torsion is invariant with respect to a subgroup of the general conformal transformations of the almost contact B-metric structure. The basic classes of the considered manifolds are characterized in terms of the torsion of the canonical-type connection.
Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact normal Kähler space, with Hodge metric $ω$. In this paper, the last in a sequence of works studying the relationship between energy properness and canonical Kähler metrics, we introduce a geodesic metric structure on $\mathcal H_ω(X)$, the space of Kähler potentials, whose completion is the finite energy space $\mathcal E^1_ω(X)$. Using this metric structure and the results of Berman-Boucksom-Eyssidieux-Guedj-Zeriahi as ingredients in the existence/properness principle of Rubinstein and the author, we show that existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on log Fano pairs is …
We study the geometry of the canonical connection on a quasi-Kaehler manifold with Norden metric. We consider the cases when the canonical connection has Kaehler curvature tensor and parallel torsion, and derive conditions for an isotropic-Kaehler manifold. We give the relation between the canonical connection, the B-connection, and the connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion on quasi-Kaehler manifolds with Norden metric.
In this Note, we will characterize the Poisson structures compatible with the canonical metric of $\reel^3$. We will also give some relvant examples of such structures. The notion of compatibility used in this Note was introduced and studied by the author in previous papers.
We present a classification of the complete, simply connected, contact metric $(κ,μ)$-spaces as homogeneous contact metric manifolds, by studying the base space of their canonical fibration. According to the value of the Boeckx invariant, it turns out that the base is a complexification or a para-complexification of a sphere or of a hyperbolic space. In particular, we obtain a new homogeneous representation of the contact metric $(κ,μ)$-spaces with Boeckx invariant less than $-1$.
In the present paper we provide a description of complete Calabi-Yau metrics on the canonical bundle of generalized complex flag manifolds. By means of Lie theory we give an explicit description of complete Ricci-flat Kähler metrics obtained through the Calabi ansatz technique. We use this approach to provide several explicit examples of noncompact complete Calabi-Yau manifolds, these examples include canonical bundles of non-toric flag manifolds (e.g. Grassmann manifolds and full flag manifolds).
We construct Kahler-Einstein metrics with negative scalar curvature near an isolated log canonical (non-log terminal) singularity. Such metrics are complete near the singularity if the underlying space has complex dimension 2 or if the singularity is smoothable. In complex dimension 2, we show that any complete Kahler-Einstein metric of negative scalar curvature near an isolated log canonical (non-log terminal) singularity is smoothly asymptotically close to one of the model metrics constructed by Kobayashi and Nakamura arising from hyperbolic geometry.
We extend the Faltings modular heights of abelian varieties to general arithmetic varieties and show direct relations with the Kahler-Einstein geometry, the Minimal Model Program, heights of Bost and Zhang, and give some applications. Along the way, we propose arithmetic Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture, an equivalence of a purely arithmetic property of variety and its metrical property, and partially confirm it.
Given a Lorentzian manifold $(M,g_L)$ and a timelike unitary vector field $E$, we can construct the Riemannian metric $g_R=g_L+2ω\otimesω$, being $ω$ the metrically equivalent one form to $E$. We relate the curvature of both metrics, especially in the case of $E$ being Killing or closed, and we use the relations obtained to give some results about $(M,g_L)$.
We introduce a new continuity method which provides an alternative way of carrying out the Analytic Minimal Model Program introduced by G. Tian and J. Song and G. Tian. This equation -- unlike the Ricci flow -- has the advantage of having Ricci curvature bounded from below along the deformation, so that the compactness theory of Cheeger-Colding-Tian for Kaehler manifolds and the partial $C^0$-estimate, can be applied.
In the compact setting, Aazami and Ream \cite{Aazami:2022th} proved that Riemannian metrics dual to a class of Lorentzian metrics, called (compact) general plane-fronted waves, are almost-Kähler. In this note, we explain how to construct extremal and second-Chern-Einstein non-Kähler almost-Kähler metrics dual to those general plane-fronted waves.
We first provide an alternative proof of the classical Weitzneböck formula for Einstein four-manifolds using Berger curvature decomposition, motivated by which we establish a unified framework for a Weitzenböck formula for a large class of canonical metrics on four-manifolds (or a Weitzenböck formula for "Einstein metrics" on four-dimensional smooth metric measure spaces). As applications, we classify Einstein four-manifolds of half two-nonnegative curvature operator, which in some sense provides a characterization of Kähler-Einstein metrics with positive scalar curvature on four-manifolds, we…
In this short note we are concerned with the Kahler-Einstein metrics near cone type log canonical singularities. By two different approaches, we construct a complete Kahler-Einstein metric with negative scalar curvature in a neighborhood of the cone over a Calabi-Yau manifold, which provides a local model for the future study of the global Kahler-Einstein metrics on singular varieties. In the first approach, we show that the singularity is uniformized by a complex ball and hence the induced metric from the Bergman metric of the ball is a desired one. In the second approach, we obtain a complet…
This is an account of some aspects of the geometry of Kähler affine metrics based on considering them as smooth metric measure spaces and applying the comparison geometry of Bakry-Emery Ricci tensors. Such techniques yield a version for Kähler affine metrics of Yau's Schwarz lemma for volume forms. By a theorem of Cheng and Yau there is a canonical Kähler affine Einstein metric on a proper convex domain, and the Schwarz lemma gives a direct proof of its uniqueness up to homothety. The potential for this metric is a function canonically associated to the cone, characterized by the property that…
In this note we show that the bi-invariant Einstein metric on the compact Lie group $G_{2}$ is dynamically unstable as a fixed point of the Ricci flow. This completes the stability analysis for the bi-invariant metrics on the compact, connected, simple Lie groups. Interestingly, $G_{2}$ is the only unstable exceptional group.
We consider smooth plane curves which are convex with respect to the origin. We describe centro-affine invariants (that is, GL_+(2,R)-invariants), such as centro-affine curvature and arc length, in terms of the canonical Lorentz structure on the three dimensional space of all the ellipses centered at zero, by means of null curves of osculating ellipses. This is the centro-affine analogue of the approach to conformal invariants of curves in the sphere introduced by Langevin and O'Hara, using the canonical pseudo Riemannian metric on the space of circles.
The aim of this paper is to study new classes of Riemannian manifolds endowed with a smooth potential function, including in a general framework classical canonical structures such as Einstein, harmonic curvature and Yamabe metrics, and, above all, gradient Ricci solitons. For the most rigid cases we give a complete classification, while for the others we provide rigidity and obstruction results, characterizations and nontrivial examples. In the final part of the paper we also describe the "nongradient" version of this construction.
We study the asymptotic behavior of quantized Ding functionals along Bergman geodesic rays and prove that the slope at infinity can be expressed in terms of Donaldson-Futaki invariants and Chow weights. Based on the slope formula, we introduce a new algebro-geometric stability on Fano manifolds and show that the existence of anti-canonically balanced metrics implies our stability. The relation between our stability and others is also discussed. As another application of the slope formula, we get the lower bound estimate on the Calabi like functionals on Fano manifolds.
We prove certain weak or idealized existence results for minimizers of the natural quadratic curvature functionals on the space of metrics on 4-manifolds. Overall, we try to exhibit the relations with the picture in 3-dimensions provided by Thurston geometrization. The existence results apply in particular to the structure of the moduli spaces of such metrics, and as such generalize most of the known results for moduli of Einstein metrics.
Let $M$ be a closed manifold of Sasaki type. A polarization of $M$ is defined by a Reeb vector field, and for one such, we consider the set of all Sasakian metrics compatible with it. On this space, we study the functional given by the squared $L^2$-norm of the scalar curvature. We prove that its critical points, or canonical representatives of the polarization, are Sasakian metrics that are transversally extremal. We define a Sasaki-Futaki invariant of the polarization, and show that it obstructs the existence of constant scalar curvature representatives. For a fixed CR structure of Sasaki ty…
We consider the family of constant curvature fiber metrics for a Lefschetz fibration with regular fibers of genus greater than one. A result of Obitsu and Wolpert is refined by showing that on an appropriate resolution of the total space, constructed by iterated blow-up, this family is log-smooth, i.e. polyhomogeneous with integral powers but possible multiplicities, at the preimage of the singular fibers in terms of parameters of size comparable to the logarithm of the length of the shrinking geodesic.
