To appear in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.. Changed title and abstract from the previous version. Essentially, this version (which is the one that will be published in PAMS) differs from the previous one because the removal of the first part, that has however been enclosed in the new article of the same three authors entitled "An intriguing ring structure on the set of d-forms"
We give a numerical characterization of the possible extremal Betti numbers (values as well as positions) of any homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring over a field.
We study the extremal Betti numbers of the class of $t$--spread strongly stable ideals. More precisely, we determine the maximal number of admissible extremal Betti numbers for such ideals, and thereby we generalize the known results for $t\in \{1,2\}$.
Let $K$ be a field and $S = K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over $K$. We discuss the behaviour of the extremal Betti numbers of the class of squarefree strongly stable ideals. More precisely, we give a numerical characterization of the possible extremal Betti numbers (values as well as positions) of such a class of squarefree monomial ideals.
Let K be a field and S a polynomial ring in a finite number of variables over K. Let F be a finitely generated graded free S-module. We examine some classes of squarefree monomial submodules of F. Hence, we focalize our attention on the Betti table of such classes in order to analyze the behavior of their extremal Betti numbers.
We provide the regularity and the Cohen-Macaulay type of binomial edge ideals of Cohen-Macaulay cones, and we show the extremal Betti numbers of some classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals: Cohen-Macaulay bipartite and fan graphs. In addition, we compute the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the binomial edge ideals of some Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs.
In this short note we introduce a notion of extremality for Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution, which can be seen as a refinement of the notion of Mumford-Castelnuovo regularity. We show that extremal Betti numbers of an arbitrary submodule of a free S-module are preserved when taking the generic initial module. We relate extremal multigraded Betti numbers in the minimal resolution of a square free monomial ideal with those of the monomial ideal corresponding to the Alexander dual simplicial complex and generalize theorems of Eagon-Reiner and Terai. As an application we give easy (alte…
Let $K$ be a field and let $S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a standard polynomial ring over a field $K$. We characterize the extremal Betti numbers, values as well positions, of a $t$-spread strongly stable ideal of $S$. Our approach is constructive. Indeed, given some positive integers $a_1,\dots,a_r$ and some pairs of positive integers $(k_1,\ell_1),\dots,(k_r,\ell_r)$, we are able to determine under which conditions there exist a $t$-spread strongly stable ideal $I$ of $S$ with $β_{k_i, k_i\ell_i}(I)=a_i$, $i=1, \ldots, r$, as extremal Betti numbers, and then to construct it.
We compute one of the distinguished extremal Betti number of the binomial edge ideal of a block graph, and classify all block graphs admitting precisely one extremal Betti number.
Let $G$ be a simple graph on the vertex set $[n]$ and $J_G$ be the corresponding binomial edge ideal. Let $G=v*H$ be the cone of $v$ on $H$. In this article, we compute all the Betti numbers of $J_G$ in terms of Betti number of $J_H$ and as a consequence, we get the Betti diagram of wheel graph. Also, we study Cohen-Macaulay defect of $S/J_G$ in terms of Cohen-Macaulay defect of $S_H/J_H$ and using this we construct a graph with Cohen-Macaulay defect $q$ for any $q\geq 1$. We obtain the depth of binomial edge ideal of join of graphs. Also, we prove that for any pair $(r,b)$ of positive integer…
We study the equality of the extremal Betti numbers of the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ and those of its initial ideal ${\rm in}(J_G)$ of a closed graph $G$. We prove that in some cases there is an unique extremal Betti number for ${\rm in}(J_G)$ and as a consequence there is an unique extremal Betti number for $J_G$ and these extremal Betti numbers are equal
We discuss extremal Betti tables of resolutions in three different contexts. We begin over the graded polynomial ring, where extremal Betti tables correspond to pure resolutions. We then contrast this behavior with that of extremal Betti tables over regular local rings and over a bigraded ring.
Let $G$ be a cycle or a complete bipartite graph. We show that the binomial edge ideal $J_{G}$ and its initial ideal with respect to the lexicographic order have the same extremal Betti number.
Given integers $r$ and $b$ with $1 \leq b \leq r$, a finite simple connected graph $G$ for which ${\rm reg}(S/I(G)) = r$ and the number of extremal Betti numbers of $S/I(G)$ is equal to $b$ will be constructed.
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. A numerical characterization of all possible extremal Betti numbers of any graded submodule of a finitely generated graded free $S$-module is given.
A Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$ satisfies trivial vanishing if $\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(M,N)=0$ for all large $i$ implies $M$ or $N$ has finite projective dimension. If $R$ satisfies trivial vanishing then we also have that $\operatorname{Ext}^i_R(M,N)=0$ for all large $i$ implies $M$ has finite projective dimension or $N$ has finite injective dimension. In this paper, we establish obstructions for the failure of trivial vanishing in terms of the asymptotic growth of the Betti and Bass numbers of the modules involved. These, together with a result of Gasharov and Peeva, provide sufficient condi…
Assume $R$ is a polynomial ring over a field and $I$ is a homogeneous Gorenstein ideal of codimension $g\ge3$ and initial degree $p\ge2$. We prove that the number of minimal generators $ν(I_p)$ of $I$ that are in degree $p$ is bounded above by $ν_0={p+g-1\choose g-1}-{p+g-3\choose g-1}$, which is the number of minimal generators of the defining ideal of the extremal Gorenstein algebra of codimension $g$ and initial degree $p$. Further, $I$ is itself extremal if $ν(I_p)=ν_0$.
In a polynomial ring $R$ with $n$ variables, for every homogeneous ideal $I$ and for every $p\leq n$ we consider the Koszul homology $H_i(p,R/I)$ with respect to a sequence of $p$ of generic linear forms and define the Koszul-Betti number $β_{ijp}(R/I)$ of $R/I$ to be the dimension of the degree $j$ part of $H_i(p,R/I)$. In characteristic 0, we show that the Koszul-Betti numbers of any ideal $I$ are bounded above by those of any gin of $I$ and also by those of the Lex-segment of $I$. We also investigate the set $Gins(I)$ of all the gin of $I$ and show that the Koszul-Betti numbers of any ideal…
Given an homogeneous monomial ideal $I$, we provide a question- and example-based investigation of the stabilization patterns of the Betti tables shapes of $I^d$ as we vary $d$. We build off Whieldon's definition of the stabilization index of $I$, Stab$(I)$, to define the stabilization sequence of $I$, StabSeq$(I)$, and use it to explore changes in the shapes of the Betti tables of $I^d$ as we vary $d$. We also present the stabilization indices and sequences of the collection of ideals $\{I_{n}\}$ where $I_{n}=(a^{2n}b^{2n}c^{2n},b^{4n}c^{2n},a^{3n}c^{3n},a^{6n-1}b)\subseteq \Bbbk[a,b,c]$.
We prove that $β_p(I(G)) = β_{p,p+r}(I(G))$ for skew Ferrers graph $G$, where $p:=\pd(I(G))$ and $r:=\reg(I(G))$. As a consequence, we confirm that Ene, Herzog and Hibi's conjecture is true for the Betti numbers in the last columm of Betti table. We also give an explicit formula for the unique extremal Betti number of binomial edge ideal for some closed graphs.
We give conditions for determining the extremal behavior for the (graded) Betti numbers of squarefree monomial ideals. For the case of non-unique minima, we give several conditions which we use to produce infinite families, exponentially growing with dimension, of Hilbert functions which have no smallest (graded) Betti numbers among squarefree monomial ideals and all ideals. For the case of unique minima, we give two families of Hilbert functions, one with exponential and one with linear growth as dimension grows, that have unique minimal Betti numbers among squarefree monomial ideals.
We investigate the standard generalized Gorenstein algebras of homological dimension three, giving a structure theorem for their resolutions. Moreover in many cases we are able to give a complete description of their graded Betti numbers.
In the present paper we prove that all homogeneous ideals with linear quotients are componentwise linear. Moreover we establish an extended version of Eliahou-Kervaire formula for graded Betti numbers.
The asymptotic behavior of graded Betti numbers of powers of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring over a field has recently been reviewed. We extend quasi polynomial behavior of graded Betti numbers of powers of homogenous ideals to Z-graded algebra over Notherian local ring. Furthermore our main result treats the Betti table of filtrations which is finite or integral over the Rees algebra.
We define a set of invariants of a homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring called the symmetric iterated Betti numbers of $I$. For $I_Γ$, the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a simplicial complex $Γ$, these numbers are the symmetric counterparts of the exterior iterated Betti numbers of $Γ$ introduced by Duval and Rose. We show that the symmetric iterated Betti numbers of an ideal $I$ coincide with those of a particular reverse lexicographic generic initial ideal $\Gin(I)$ of $I$, and interpret these invariants in terms of the associated primes and standard pairs of $\Gin(I)$. We verify that for an…
We consider vector-spread Borel ideals. We show that these ideals have linear quotients and thereby we determine the graded Betti numbers and the bigraded Poincaré series. A characterization of the extremal Betti numbers of such a class of ideals is given. Finally, we classify all Cohen-Macaulay vector-spread Borel ideals.
The main goal of this paper is to prove, in positive characteristic $p$, stability behavior for the graded Betti numbers in the periodic tails of the minimal resolutions of Frobenius powers of the homogeneous maximal ideals for very general choices of hypersurface in three variables whose degree has the opposite parity to that of $p$. We also find some of the structure of the matrix factorization giving the resolution. We achieve this by developing a method for obtaining the degrees of the generators of the defining ideal of an $\mathfrak{c}$-compressed Gorenstein Artinian graded algebra from …
Using the concept of vector partition functions, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of graded Betti numbers of powers of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring over a field. Our main results state that if the polynomial ring is equipped with a positive $\ZZ$-grading, then the Betti numbers of powers of ideals are encoded by finitely many polynomials. More precisely, in the case of $\ZZ$-grading, $\ZZ^2$ can be splitted into a finite number of regions such that each region corresponds to a polynomial that depending to the degree $(μ, t)$, $\dim_k \left(\tor_i^S(I^t, k)_μ \right)$ is equal …
Let $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ and $I \subset R$ be a homogeneous ideal. In this article, we first obtain certain sufficient conditions for the subadditivity of $R/I$. As a consequence, we prove that if $I$ is generated by homogeneous complete intersection, then subadditivity holds for $R/I$. We then study a conjecture of Avramov, Conca and Iyengar on subadditivity, when $I$ is a monomial ideal with $R/I$ Koszul. We identify several classes of edge ideals of graphs $G$ such that the subadditivity holds for $R/I(G)$. We then study the strand connectivity of edge ideals and obtain severa…
In this article, we compute Betti numbers for a Cohen-Macaulay tangent cone of a monomial curve in the affine $4$-space corresponding to a pseudo symmetric numerical semigroup. As a byproduct, we also show that for these semigroups, being of homogeneous type and homogeneous are equivalent properties.
Let $I\subseteq R=\kk[x_1,...,x_n]$ be a homogeneous equigenerated ideal of degree $r$. We show here that the shapes of the Betti tables of the ideals $I^d$ stabilize, in the sense that there exists some $D$ such that for all $d\geq D$, $\betti{i}{j+rd}(I^d)\neq 0\Leftrightarrow \betti{i}{j+rD}(I^D)\neq 0$. We also produce upper bounds for the stabilization index $\Stab(I)$. This strengthens the result of Cutkosky, Herzog, and Trung that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg(I^d)$ is eventually a linear function in $d$.
Let $Q\in \K[x_1,...,x_n] = S$ be a homogeneous polynomial of degree $d$. The freeness of the logarithmic derivation module, $D(Q)$, and of its natural generalizations, has been widely studied. In the free case, $D(Q) \simeq \bigoplus_{i=1}^n S(-d_i)$ where the $d_i$'s are the exponents of the module; and as a direct consequence of the Saito-Ziegler criterion, the formula $d = \sum_i d_i$ holds. In this paper we give a generalization of this formula in the non-free case. Moreover, we show that an equivalent formula is also true in the quasi-homogeneous case, and show to what extent it can be g…
Several authors investigating the asymptotic behaviour of the Betti diagrams of the graded system obtained by taking powers of an ideal have shown that the shape of the nonzero entries in the diagrams stabilizes when $I$ is a homogeneous ideal with generators of the same degree. In this paper, we study the Betti diagrams of graded systems of ideals built by taking the initial ideals or generic initial ideals of powers, and discuss the stabilization of additional collections of Betti diagrams. Our main result shows that when I has generators of the same degree, the entries in the Betti diagrams…
We extend a result of Caviglia and Sbarra to a polynomial ring with base field of any characteristic. Given a homogeneous ideal containing both a piecewise lex ideal and an ideal generated by powers of the variables, we find a lex ideal with the following property: the ideal in the polynomial ring generated by the piecewise lex ideal, the ideal of powers, and the lex ideal has the same Hilbert function and Betti numbers at least as large as those of the original ideal.
Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a weighted oriented graph and $I(\mathcal{D})$ be its edge ideal. In this paper, we investigate the Betti numbers of $I(\mathcal{D})$ via upper-Koszul simplicial complexes, Betti splittings and the mapping cone construction. In particular, we provide recursive formulas for the Betti numbers of edge ideals of several classes of weighted oriented graphs. We also identify classes of weighted oriented graphs whose edge ideals have a unique extremal Betti number which allows us to compute the regularity and projective dimension for the identified classes. Furthermore, we charac…
In their paper on multiplicity bounds (1998), Herzog and Srinivasan study the relationship between the graded Betti numbers of a homogeneous ideal I in a polynomial ring R and the degree of I. For certain classes of ideals, they prove a bound on the degree in terms of the largest and smallest Betti numbers, generalizing results of Huneke and Miller (1985). The bound is conjectured to hold in general; we study this using linkage. If R/I is Cohen-Macaulay, we may reduce to the case where I defines a zero-dimensional subscheme Y. If Y is residual to a zero-scheme Z of a certain type (low degree o…
Let $G$ be a connected simple graph on the vertex set $[n]$. Banerjee-Betancourt proved that $depth(S/J_G)\leq n+1$. In this article, we prove that if $G$ is a unicyclic graph, then the depth of $S/J_G$ is bounded below by $n$. Also, we characterize $G$ with $depth(S/J_G)=n$ and $depth(S/J_G)=n+1$. We then compute one of the distinguished extremal Betti numbers of $S/J_G$. If $G$ is obtained by attaching whiskers at some vertices of the cycle of length $k$, then we show that $k-1\leq reg(S/J_G)\leq k+1$. Furthermore, we characterize $G$ with $reg(S/J_G)=k-1$, $reg(S/J_G)=k$ and $reg(S/J_G)=k+1…
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $I\subseteq S$ a homogeneous ideal containing a regular sequence of forms of degrees $d_1, \ldots, d_c$. In this paper we prove the Lex-plus-powers Conjecture when the field has characteristic 0 for all regular sequences such that $d_i \geq \sum_{j=1}^{i-1} (d_j-1)+1$ for each $i$; that is, we show that the Betti table of $I$ is bounded above by the Betti table of the lex-plus-powers ideal of $I$. As an application, when the characteristic is 0, we obtain bounds for the Betti numbers of any homogeneous ideal containing a regular sequence of known d…
In 2018 Celikbas, Laxmi, Kraśkiewicz, and Weyman exhibited an interesting family of perfect ideals of codimension three, with five generators, of Cohen-Macaulay type two with trivial multiplication on the Tor algebra. All previously known perfect ideals of codimension three, with five generators, of Cohen-Macaulay type two had been found by Brown in 1987. Brown's ideals all have non-trivial multiplication on the Tor algebra. We prove that all of the ideals of Brown are obtained from the ideals of Celikbas, Laxmi, Kraśkiewicz, and Weyman by (non-homogeneous) specialization. We also prove that b…

The main goal of this paper is to size up the minimal graded free resolution of a homogeneous ideal in terms of its generating degrees. By and large, this is too ambitious an objective. As understood, sizing up means looking closely at the two available parameters: the shifts and the Betti numbers. Since, in general, bounds for the shifts can behave quite steeply, we filter the difficulty by the subadditivity of the syzygies. The method we applied is hopefully new and sheds additional light on the structure of the minimal free resolution. We use the Boij-Söderberg techniques for the Betti numb…
In the first part of the paper we answer (positively) a question raised by the first author which has to do with some sort of rigity of the tail of resolution of an ideal. Let $I$ be a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring over a field of characteristic 0. Denote by $β_i(I)$ the $i$-th Betti number of $I$ and by $Gin(I)$ the revlex generic initial ideal of $I$. In general one has $β_i(I)\leq β_i(Gin(I))$ and we show that if $β_i(I)=β_i(Gin(I))$ for some $i$ then $β_j(I)=β_j(Gin(I))$ for all $j>i$. In the second part of the paper we answer a question of Eisenbud and Huneke. We prove that if $I…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective Calabi-Yau variety and $L$ a Koszul line bundle on $X$. We show that for Betti numbers of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module over the homogeneous coordinate ring $A$ of $X$ there are formulas similar to the formulas for cohomology number. This similarity is realized via the box-product resolution of the diagonal $Δ_X \subset X \times X$.

Let $G$ be a finitely generated abelian group, and let $S = A[x_1, ..., x_n]$ be a $G$-graded polynomial ring over a commutative ring $A$. Let $I_1, ..., I_s$ be $G$-homogeneous ideals in $S$, and let $M$ be a finitely generated $G$-graded $S$-module. We show that, when $A$ is Noetherian, the nonzero $G$-graded Betti numbers of $MI_1^{t_1} ... I_s^{t_s}$ exhibit an asymptotic linear behavior as the $t_i$s get large.
In this paper, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the Cohen-Macaulayness of the associated graded ring of a simplicial affine semigroups using Gröbner basis. We generalize the concept of homogeneous numerical semigroup for the simplicial affine semigroup and show that the Betti numbers of the corresponding semigroup ring matches with the Betti numbers of the associated graded ring. We also define the nice extension for simplicial affine semigroups, motivated by the notion of a nice extension of the numerical semigroups.
We prove upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial complexes. Along the way we show bounds for Cohen-Macaulay graded rings $S/I$, where $S$ is a polynomial ring and $I\subseteq S$ is an homogeneous ideal containing a certain number of generators in degree 2, including the squares of the variables. Using similar techniques we provide upper bounds for the number of linear syzygies for Stanley-Reisner of balanced normal pseudomanifolds. Moreover, we compute explicitly the graded Betti numbers of cross-polytopal stacked spheres, and show that they on…
We show that for maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a homogeneous coordinate rings of smooth Calabi-Yau varieties $X$ computation of Betti numbers can be reduced to computations of dimensions of certain $\operatorname{Hom}$ groups in the bounded derived category $D^b(X)$. In the simplest case of a smooth elliptic curve $E$ imbedded into $\mathbb{P}^2$ as a smooth cubic we use our formula to get explicit answers for Betti numbers. Description of the automorphism group of the derived category $D^b(E)$ in terms of the spherical twist functors of Seidel and Thomas plays a major role in our approa…
In CI-Liaison, significant effort has been made to study ideals that are in the linkage class of a complete intersection, which are called licci ideals. In a polynomial ring, recently E. Chong defined a "sequentially bounded" condition on the degrees of the forms generating the regular sequences, and used this condition to find a large class of licci ideals satisfying the Eisenbud-Green-Harris Conjecture (among them, grade $3$ homogeneous Gorenstein ideals). He raised the question of whether all homogeneous licci ideals are sequentially bounded licci. In this paper we construct a class of exam…
Let I be a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring P over a field. By Macaulay's Theorem, there exists a lexicographic ideal L=Lex(I) with the same Hilbert function as I. Peeva has proved that the Betti numbers of P/I can be obtained from the graded Betti numbers of P/L by a suitable sequence of consecutive cancellations. We extend this result to any ideal I in a regular local ring (R,m) by passing through the associated graded ring. To this purpose it will be necessary to enlarge the list of the allowed cancellations. Taking advantage of Eliahou-Kervaire's construction, several applications ar…
Let I = (F_1,...,F_r) be a homogeneous ideal of R = k[x_0,...,x_n] generated by a regular sequence of type (d_1,...,d_r). We give an elementary proof for an explicit description of the graded Betti numbers of I^s for any s \geq 1. These numbers depend only upon the type and s. We then use this description to: (1) write H_{R/I^s}, the Hilbert function of R/I^s, in terms of H_{R/I}; (2) verify that the k-algebra R/I^s satisfies a conjecture of Herzog-Huneke-Srinivasan; and (3) obtain information about the numerical invariants associated to sets of fat points in P^n whose support is a complete in…
