Let $S$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $I\subseteq S$ a homogeneous ideal containing a regular sequence of forms of degrees $d_1, \ldots, d_c$. In this paper we prove the Lex-plus-powers Conjecture when the field has characteristic 0 for all regular sequences such that $d_i \geq \sum_{j=1}^{i-1} (d_j-1)+1$ for each $i$; that is, we show that the Betti table of $I$ is bounded above by the Betti table of the lex-plus-powers ideal of $I$. As an application, when the characteristic is 0, we obtain bounds for the Betti numbers of any homogeneous ideal containing a regular sequence of known degrees, which are sharper than the previously known ones from the Bigatti-Hulett-Pardue Theorem.
The $n$-type vectors introduced by Geramita, Harima and Shin are in 1-1 correspondence with the Hilbert functions Artinian of lex ideals. Letting $\mathbb{A} =\{a_1,..., a_n\}$ define the degrees of a regular sequence, we construct ${\rm lpp}_{\le\mathbb{A}}$-vectors which are in 1-1 correspondence with the Hilbert functions of certain lex plus powers ideals (depending on $\mathbb{A}$). This construction enables us to show that the residual of a lex plus powers ideal in an appropriate regular sequence is again a lex plus powers ideal. We then use this result to show that the Eisenbud-Green-Har…
We prove an inequality between Hilbert functions of local cohomology modules supported in the homogeneous maximal ideal of standard graded algebras over a field, within the framework of embeddings of posets of Hilbert functions. As a main application, we prove an analogue for local cohomology of Evans' Lex-Plus-Power Conjecture for Betti numbers. This results implies some cases of the classical Lex-Plus-Power Conjecture, namely an inequality between extremal Betti numbers. In particular, for the classes of ideals for which the Eisenbud-Green-Harris Conjecture is currently known, the projective…
Let $I$ be a homogeneous Artinian ideal in a polynomial ring $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$ over a field $k$ of characteristic 0. We study an equivalent condition for the generic initial ideal $\gin(I)$ with respect to reverse lexicographic order to be almost reverse lexicographic. As a result, we show that Moreno-Socias conjecture implies Fröberg conjecture. And for the case $\Codim I \le 3$, we show that $R/I$ has the strong Lefschetz property if and only if $\gin(I)$ is almost reverse lexicographic. Finally for a monomial complete intersection Artinian ideal $I=(x_1^{d_1},...,x_n^{d_n})$, we prove that…
Let $f_1, ..., f_n$ be homogeneous polynomials generating a generic ideal $I$ in the ring of polynomials in $n$ variables over an infinite field. Moreno-Socías conjectured that for the graded reverse lexicographic term ordering, the initial ideal ${\rm in}(I)$ is a weakly reverse lexicographic ideal. This paper contains a new proof of Moreno-Soc{\'ı}as' conjecture for the case $n=2$.
The core of an ideal is defined as the intersection of all of its reductions. In this paper we provide an explicit description for the core of a monomial ideal $I$ satisfying certain residual conditions, showing that ${\rm core}(I)$ coincides with the largest monomial ideal contained in a general reduction of $I$. We prove that the class of lex-segment ideals satisfies these residual conditions and study the core of lex-segment ideals generated in one degree. For monomial ideals that do not necessarily satisfy the residual conditions and that are generated in one degree, we conjecture an expli…
Let $S$ be a polynomial algebra over a field. We study classes of monomial ideals (as for example lexsegment ideals) of $S$ having minimal depth. In particular, Stanley's conjecture holds for these ideals. Also we show that if Stanley's conjecture holds for a square free monomial ideal then it holds for all its trivial modifications.
Let $I = ( f_1, \dots, f_n )$ be a homogeneous ideal in the polynomial ring $K[x_1, \dots,x_n]$ over a field $K$ generated by generic polynomials. Using an incremental approach based on a method by Gao, Guan and Volny, and properties of the standard monomials of generic ideals, we show how a Gröbner basis for the ideal $(f_1, \dots, f_i)$ can be obtained from that of $(f_1, \dots, f_{i-1})$. If $deg f_i = d_i$, we are able to give a complete description of the initial ideal of $I$ in the case where $d_i \geq \left(\sum_{j=1}^{i-1}d_j\right) - i -1$. It was conjectured by Moreno-Socías that the…
The Eisenbud-Green-Harris (EGH) conjecture states that a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring $K[x_1,\,\ldots,\,x_n]$ over a field $K$ that contains a regular sequence $f_1,\,\ldots,\, f_n$ with degrees $a_i$, $i=1,\,\ldots,\,n$ has the same Hilbert function as a lex-plus-powers ideal containing the powers $x_i^{a_i}$, $i=1,\,\ldots,\,n$. In this paper, we discuss a case of the EGH conjecture for homogeneous ideals generated by $n+2$ quadrics containing a regular sequence $f_1,\, \ldots, \, f_n$ and give a complete proof for EGH when $n=5$ and $a_1=\cdots=a_5=2$.
Bounds for the maximum degree of a minimal Gröbner basis of simplicial toric ideals with respect to the reverse lexicographic order are given. These bounds are close to the bound stated in Eisenbud-Goto's Conjecture on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
It is an open question whether tight closure commutes with localization in quotients of a polynomial ring in finitely many variables over a field. Katzman showed that tight closure of ideals in these rings commutes with localization at one element if for all ideals I and J in a polynomial ring there is a linear upper bound in q on the degree in the least variable of reduced Groebner bases in reverse lexicographic ordering of the ideals of the form J + I^{[q]}. Katzman conjectured that this property would always be satisfied. In this paper we prove several cases of Katzman's conjecture. We also…
We study inequalities between graded Betti numbers of ideals in a standard graded algebra over a field and their images under embedding maps, defined earlier by us in [Math. Z. 274, (2013), no. 3-4, pp. 809-819; arXiv:1009.4488]. We show that if graded Betti numbers do not decrease when we replace ideals in an algebra by their embedded versions, then the same behaviour is carried over to ring extensions. As a corollary we give alternative inductive proofs of earlier results of Bigatti, Hulett, Pardue, Mermin-Peeva-Stillman and Murai. We extend a hypersurface restriction theorem of Herzog-Popes…
Using recent work by Erman-Sam-Snowden, we show that finitely generated ideals in the ring of bounded-degree formal power series in infinitely many variables have finitely generated Gröbner bases relative to the graded reverse lexicographic order. We then combine this result with the first author's work on topological Noetherianity of polynomial functors to give an algorithmic proof of the following statement: ideals in polynomial rings generated by a fixed number of homogeneous polynomials of fixed degrees only have a finite number of possible generic initial ideals, independently of the numb…
The multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan is verified for the face rings of the following classes of simplicial complexes: matroid complexes, complexes of dimension one and two, and Gorenstein complexes of dimension at most four. The lower bound part of this conjecture is also established for the face rings of all doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes whose 1-skeleton's connectivity does not exceed the codimension plus one as well as for all (d-1)-dimensional d-Cohen-Macaulay complexes. The main ingredient of the proofs is a new interpretation of the minimal shifts in the resolut…
For $2$ vectors $x,y\in \mathbb{R}^m$, we use the notation $x * y =(x_1y_1,\ldots ,x_my_m)$, and if $x=y$ we also use the notation $x^2=x*x$ and define by induction $x^k=x*(x^{k-1})$. We use $<,>$ for the usual inner product on $\mathbb{R}^m$. For $A$ an $m\times m$ matrix with coefficients in $\mathbb{R}$, we can assign a map $F_A(x)=x+(Ax)^3:~\mathbb{R}^m\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^m$. A matrix $A$ is Druzkowski iff $det(JF_A(x))=1$ for all $x\in \mathbb{R}^m$. Recently, Jiang Liu posted a preprint on arXiv asserting a proof of the Jacobian conjecture, by showing the properness of $F_A(x)$ when $…
