In their paper on multiplicity bounds (1998), Herzog and Srinivasan study the relationship between the graded Betti numbers of a homogeneous ideal I in a polynomial ring R and the degree of I. For certain classes of ideals, they prove a bound on the degree in terms of the largest and smallest Betti numbers, generalizing results of Huneke and Miller (1985). The bound is conjectured to hold in general; we study this using linkage. If R/I is Cohen-Macaulay, we may reduce to the case where I defines a zero-dimensional subscheme Y. If Y is residual to a zero-scheme Z of a certain type (low degree or points in special position), then we show that the conjecture is true for I_Y.
The main goal of this paper is to size up the minimal graded free resolution of a homogeneous ideal in terms of its generating degrees. By and large, this is too ambitious an objective. As understood, sizing up means looking closely at the two available parameters: the shifts and the Betti numbers. Since, in general, bounds for the shifts can behave quite steeply, we filter the difficulty by the subadditivity of the syzygies. The method we applied is hopefully new and sheds additional light on the structure of the minimal free resolution. We use the Boij-Söderberg techniques for the Betti numb…
Several authors investigating the asymptotic behaviour of the Betti diagrams of the graded system obtained by taking powers of an ideal have shown that the shape of the nonzero entries in the diagrams stabilizes when $I$ is a homogeneous ideal with generators of the same degree. In this paper, we study the Betti diagrams of graded systems of ideals built by taking the initial ideals or generic initial ideals of powers, and discuss the stabilization of additional collections of Betti diagrams. Our main result shows that when I has generators of the same degree, the entries in the Betti diagrams…
Let $K$ be a field, $V$ a $K$-vector space with basis $e_1,\ldots,e_n$, and $E$ the exterior algebra of $V$. To a given monomial ideal $I\subsetneq E$ we associate a special monomial ideal $J$ with generators in the same degrees as those of $I$ and such that the number of the minimal monomial generators in each degree of $I$ and $J$ coincide. We call $J$ the colexsegment ideal associated to $I$. We prove that the class of strongly stable ideals in $E$ generated in one degree satisfies the colex lower bound, that is, the total Betti numbers of the colexsegment ideal associated to a strongly sta…
We first describe a situation in which every graded Betti number in the tail of the resolution of $\frac RJ$ may be read from the socle degrees of $\frac RJ$. Then we apply the above result to the ideals $J$ and $J^{[q]}$; and thereby describe a situation in which the graded Betti numbers in the tail of the resolution of $R/J^{[q]}$ are equal to the graded Betti numbers in the tail of a shift of the resolution of $R/J$.
Assume $R$ is a polynomial ring over a field and $I$ is a homogeneous Gorenstein ideal of codimension $g\ge3$ and initial degree $p\ge2$. We prove that the number of minimal generators $ν(I_p)$ of $I$ that are in degree $p$ is bounded above by $ν_0={p+g-1\choose g-1}-{p+g-3\choose g-1}$, which is the number of minimal generators of the defining ideal of the extremal Gorenstein algebra of codimension $g$ and initial degree $p$. Further, $I$ is itself extremal if $ν(I_p)=ν_0$.
We describe the positive cone generated by bigraded Betti diagrams of artinian modules of codimension two, whose resolutions become pure of a given type when taking total degrees. If the differences of these total degrees, p and q, are relatively prime, the extremal rays are parametrised by order ideals in N^2 contained in the region px + qy < (p-1)(q-1). We also consider some examples concerning artinian modules of codimension three.
We prove that multigraded Betti numbers of a simplicial forest are always either 0 or 1. Moreover a nonzero multidegree appears exactly at one homological degree in the resolution. Our work generalizes work of Bouchat on edge ideals of graph forests.
We investigate decompositions of Betti diagrams over a polynomial ring within the framework of Boij--Soederberg theory. That is, given a Betti diagram, we decompose it into pure diagrams. Relaxing the requirement that the degree sequences in such pure diagrams be totally ordered, we are able to define a multiplication law for Betti diagrams that respects the decomposition and allows us to write a simple expression the decomposition of the Betti diagram of any complete intersection in terms of the degrees of its minimal generators. In the more traditional sense, the decomposition of complete in…
The main goal of this paper is to prove, in positive characteristic $p$, stability behavior for the graded Betti numbers in the periodic tails of the minimal resolutions of Frobenius powers of the homogeneous maximal ideals for very general choices of hypersurface in three variables whose degree has the opposite parity to that of $p$. We also find some of the structure of the matrix factorization giving the resolution. We achieve this by developing a method for obtaining the degrees of the generators of the defining ideal of an $\mathfrak{c}$-compressed Gorenstein Artinian graded algebra from …
Let $R=\Bbbk[x_1,...,x_m]$ be the polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ with the standard $\mathbb Z^m$-grading (multigrading), let $L$ be a Noetherian multigraded $R$-module, let $β_{i,α}(L)$ the $i$th (multigraded) Betti number of $L$ of multidegree $\a$. We introduce the notion of a generic (relative to $L$) multidegree, and the notion of multigraded module of generic type. When the multidegree $\a$ is generic (relative to $L$) we provide a Hochster-type formula for $β_{i,α}(L)$ as the dimension of the reduced homology of a certain simplicial complex associated with $L$. This allows us to sh…
Let $I\subseteq R=\kk[x_1,...,x_n]$ be a homogeneous equigenerated ideal of degree $r$. We show here that the shapes of the Betti tables of the ideals $I^d$ stabilize, in the sense that there exists some $D$ such that for all $d\geq D$, $\betti{i}{j+rd}(I^d)\neq 0\Leftrightarrow \betti{i}{j+rD}(I^D)\neq 0$. We also produce upper bounds for the stabilization index $\Stab(I)$. This strengthens the result of Cutkosky, Herzog, and Trung that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg(I^d)$ is eventually a linear function in $d$.
For an ideal $I$ in a regular local ring or a graded ideal $I$ in the polynomial ring we study the limiting behavior of the Betti numbers of S/I^k as k goes to infinity. By Kodiyalam's result it is known that in each homological degree the Betti number is a polynomial for large k. We call these polynomials the Kodiyalam polynomials and encode the limiting behavior in their generating polynomial. It is shown that the limiting behavior depends only on the coefficients on the Kodiyalam polynomials in the highest possible degree. For these we exhibit lower bounds in special cases and conjecture th…
This paper gives a sharp upper bound for the Betti numbers of a finitely generated multigraded $R$-module, where $R=\Bbbk [x_{1},...,x_{m}]$ is the polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ in $m$ variables. The bound is given in terms of the rank and the first two Betti numbers of the module. An example is given which achieves these bounds simultaneously in each homological degree. Using Alexander duality, a bound is established for the total multigraded Bass numbers of a finite multigraded module in terms of the first two total multigraded Bass numbers.
Let $S={\sf k}[X_1,\dots, X_n]$ be a polynomial ring, where ${\sf k}$ is a field. This article deals with the defining ideal of the Rees algebra of squarefree monomial ideal generated in degree $n-2$. As a consequence, we prove that Betti numbers of powers of the cover ideal of the complement graph of a tree do not depend on the choice of tree. Further, we study the regularity and Betti numbers of powers of cover ideals associated to certain graphs.
Let $I$ be a monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $S$ generated by elements of degree at most $d$. In this paper, it is shown that, if the $i$-th syzygy of $I$ has no element of degrees $j, \ldots, j+(d-1)$ (where $j \geq i+d$), then $(i+1)$-syzygy of $I$ does not have any element of degree $j+d$. Then we give several applications of this result, including an alternative proof for Green-Lazarsfeld index of the edge ideals of graphs as well as an alternative proof for Fröberg's theorem on classification of square-free monomial ideals generated in degree two with linear resolution. Among all, w…
We present two new problems on lower bounds for resolution Betti numbers of monomial ideals generated in a fixed degree. The first concerns any such ideal and bounds the total Betti numbers, while the second concerns ideals that are quadratic and bihomogeneous with respect to two variable sets, but gives a more finely graded lower bound. These problems are solved for certain classes of ideals that generalize (in two different directions) the edge ideals of threshold graphs and Ferrers graphs. In the process, we produce particularly simple cellular linear resolutions for strongly stable and squ…
We consider the open problem of determining the graded Betti numbers for fat point subschemes supported at general points of the projective plane. We relate this problem to the open geometric problem of determining the splitting type of the pullback of the cotangent bundle on the plane to the normalization of certain rational plane curves. We give a conjecture for the graded Betti numbers which would determine them in all degrees but one for every fat point subscheme supported at general points of the plane. We also prove our Betti number conjecture in a broad range of cases. An appendix discu…
The degree of a projective subscheme has an upper bound in term of the codimension and the reduction number. If a projective variety has an almost maximal degree, that is, the degree equals to the upper bound minus one, then its Betti table has been described explicitly. We build on this work by showing that for most of such varieties, the defining ideals are componentwise linear and in particular the componentwise linearity is suitable for classifying the Betti tables of such varieties. As an application, we compute the Betti table of all varieties with almost maximal degree and componentwise…
We show that for maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a homogeneous coordinate rings of smooth Calabi-Yau varieties $X$ computation of Betti numbers can be reduced to computations of dimensions of certain $\operatorname{Hom}$ groups in the bounded derived category $D^b(X)$. In the simplest case of a smooth elliptic curve $E$ imbedded into $\mathbb{P}^2$ as a smooth cubic we use our formula to get explicit answers for Betti numbers. Description of the automorphism group of the derived category $D^b(E)$ in terms of the spherical twist functors of Seidel and Thomas plays a major role in our approa…
Using the concept of vector partition functions, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of graded Betti numbers of powers of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring over a field. Our main results state that if the polynomial ring is equipped with a positive $\ZZ$-grading, then the Betti numbers of powers of ideals are encoded by finitely many polynomials. More precisely, in the case of $\ZZ$-grading, $\ZZ^2$ can be splitted into a finite number of regions such that each region corresponds to a polynomial that depending to the degree $(μ, t)$, $\dim_k \left(\tor_i^S(I^t, k)_μ \right)$ is equal …
An ideal $I \subset \mathbb{k}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ is said to have linear powers if $I^k$ has a linear minimal free resolution, for all $k$. In this paper we study the Betti numbers of $I^k$, for ideals $I$ with linear powers. The Betti numbers are computed explicitly, as polynomials in $k$, for the ideal generated by all square free monomials of degree $d$, for $d=2, 3$ or $n-1$, and the product of all ideals generated by $s$ variables, for $s=n-1$ or $n-2$. We also study the generators of the Rees ideal, for ideals with linear powers. Especially, we are interested in ideals for which the Rees…
We give a formula to compute all the top degree graded Betti numbers of the path ideal of a cycle. Also we will find a criterion to determine when Betti numbers of this ideal are non zero and give a formula to compute its projective dimension and regularity.
Let $Q\in \K[x_1,...,x_n] = S$ be a homogeneous polynomial of degree $d$. The freeness of the logarithmic derivation module, $D(Q)$, and of its natural generalizations, has been widely studied. In the free case, $D(Q) \simeq \bigoplus_{i=1}^n S(-d_i)$ where the $d_i$'s are the exponents of the module; and as a direct consequence of the Saito-Ziegler criterion, the formula $d = \sum_i d_i$ holds. In this paper we give a generalization of this formula in the non-free case. Moreover, we show that an equivalent formula is also true in the quasi-homogeneous case, and show to what extent it can be g…
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $I\subseteq S$ a homogeneous ideal containing a regular sequence of forms of degrees $d_1, \ldots, d_c$. In this paper we prove the Lex-plus-powers Conjecture when the field has characteristic 0 for all regular sequences such that $d_i \geq \sum_{j=1}^{i-1} (d_j-1)+1$ for each $i$; that is, we show that the Betti table of $I$ is bounded above by the Betti table of the lex-plus-powers ideal of $I$. As an application, when the characteristic is 0, we obtain bounds for the Betti numbers of any homogeneous ideal containing a regular sequence of known d…
There are two seemingly unrelated ideals associated with a simplicial complex Δ. One is the Stanley-Reisner ideal I_Δ, the monomial ideal generated by minimal non-faces of Δ, well-known in combinatorial commutative algebra. The other is the toric ideal I_{M(Δ)} of the facet subring of Δ, whose generators give a Markov basis for the hierarchical model defined by Δ, playing a prominent role in algebraic statistics. In this note we show that the complexity of the generators of I_{M(Δ)} is determined by the Betti numbers of I_Δ. The unexpected connection between the syzygies of the Stanley-Reisner…
We produce a family of complexes called trimming complexes and explore applications. We study how trimming complexes can be used to deduce the Betti table for the minimal free resolution of the ideal generated by subsets of a generating set for an arbitrary ideal $I$. In particular, we compute the Betti table for removing an arbitrary generator from the ideal of submaximal pfaffians of a generic skew symmetric matrix $M$. We also explicitly compute the Betti table for the ideal generated by certain subsets of the generating set of the ideal of maximal minors of a generic $n \times m$ matrix. S…
A numerical characterization is given of the so-called h-triangles of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. This result characterizes the number of faces of various dimensions and codimensions in such a complex, generalizing the classical Macaulay-Stanley theorem to the nonpure case. Moreover, we characterize the possible Betti tables of componentwise linear ideals. A key tool in our investigation is a bijection between shifted multicomplexes of degree at most d and shifted pure (d-1)-dimensional simplicial complexes.
We prove upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial complexes. Along the way we show bounds for Cohen-Macaulay graded rings $S/I$, where $S$ is a polynomial ring and $I\subseteq S$ is an homogeneous ideal containing a certain number of generators in degree 2, including the squares of the variables. Using similar techniques we provide upper bounds for the number of linear syzygies for Stanley-Reisner of balanced normal pseudomanifolds. Moreover, we compute explicitly the graded Betti numbers of cross-polytopal stacked spheres, and show that they on…
We determine the codimension of the Betti strata of the family G(H) parametrizing graded Artinian quotients A of the polynomial ring R in two variables, having Hilbert function H. The Betti stratum G(B,H) parametrizes all such quotients having the graded Betti numbers determined by the relation degrees B. Our method is to identify G(B,H) as the product of determinantal varieties. We then use a result of M. Boij that reduces the calculation of codimension to showing that the most special stratum has the expected codimension. We also show that the closure of the Betti stratum is Cohen-Macaulay, …
Suppose that $M$ is a finitely-generated graded module of codimension $c\geq 3$ over a polynomial ring and that the regularity of $M$ is at most $2a-2$ where $a\geq 2$ is the minimal degree of a first syzygy of $M$. Then we show that the sum of the betti numbers of $M$ is at least $β_0(M)(2^c + 2^{c-1})$. In addition, if $c \geq 9$ then for each $1\leq i\leq \lceil c/2\rceil$, we show $β_i(M)\geq 2β_0(M){c \choose i}$.
We prove the subadditivity property for the maximal degrees of the syzygies of facet ideals simplicial forests. For such an ideal $I$, if the $i$-th Betti number is nonzero and $i=a+b$, we show that there are monomials in the lcm lattice of $I$ that are complements in part of the lattice, each supporting a nonvanishing $a$-th and $b$-th Betti numbers. The subadditivity formula follows from this observation.

Let X be a smooth projective variety with torsion-free Picard group. We introduce complexes of vector spaces whose homology determines the structure of the minimal free resolution of the Cox ring of X over the polynomial ring and show how the homology of these complexes can be studied by purely geometric methods. As an application of these techniques we give a simple new proof of a characterization of the Cox rings of Del Pezzo surfaces (of degree >1) conjectured by Batyrev and Popov.
In this paper we study the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner ideals generated in degree 2. We show that the first six Betti numbers do not depend on the characteristic of the ground field. We also show that, if the number of variables $n$ is at most 10, all Betti numbers are independent of the ground field. For $n=11$, there exists precisely 4 examples in which the Betti numbers depend on the ground field. This is equivalent to the statement that the homology of flag complexes with at most 10 vertices is torsion free and that there exists precisely 4 non-isomorphic flag complexes with 11 vertic…
In a polynomial ring $R$ with $n$ variables, for every homogeneous ideal $I$ and for every $p\leq n$ we consider the Koszul homology $H_i(p,R/I)$ with respect to a sequence of $p$ of generic linear forms and define the Koszul-Betti number $β_{ijp}(R/I)$ of $R/I$ to be the dimension of the degree $j$ part of $H_i(p,R/I)$. In characteristic 0, we show that the Koszul-Betti numbers of any ideal $I$ are bounded above by those of any gin of $I$ and also by those of the Lex-segment of $I$. We also investigate the set $Gins(I)$ of all the gin of $I$ and show that the Koszul-Betti numbers of any ideal…
In this paper we study graded Betti numbers of any nondegenerate 3-regular algebraic set $X$ in a projective space $\mathbb P^{n}$. More concretely, via Generic initial ideals (Gins) method we mainly consider `tailing' Betti numbers, whose homological index is not less than $\mathrm{codim}(X,\mathbb P^{n})$. For this purpose, we first introduce a key definition `$\mathrm{ND(1)}$ property', which provides a suitable ground where one can generalize the concepts such as `being nondegenerate' or `of minimal degree' from the case of varieties to the case of more general closed subschemes and give a…
Let $(A, \m, k)$ be a Gorenstein local ring of dimension $ d\geq 1.$ Let $I$ be an ideal of $A$ with $\htt(I) \geq d-1.$ We prove that the numerical function \[ n \mapsto \ell(\ext_A^i(k, A/I^{n+1}))\] is given by a polynomial of degree $d-1 $ in the case when $ i \geq d+1 $ and $\curv(I^n) > 1$ for all $n \geq 1.$ We prove a similar result for the numerical function \[ n \mapsto \ell(\Tor_i^A(k, A/I^{n+1}))\] under the assumption that $A$ is a \CM ~ local ring. \noindent We note that there are many examples of ideals satisfying the condition $\curv(I^n) > 1,$ for all $ n \geq 1.$ We also cons…
We explore the dependence of the Betti numbers of monomial ideals on the characteristic of the field. A first observation is that for a fixed prime $p$ either the $i$-th Betti number of all high enough powers of a monomial ideal differs in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$ or it is the same for all high enough powers. In our main results we provide constructions and explicit examples of monomial ideals all of whose powers have some characteristic-dependent Betti numbers or whose asymptotic regularity depends on the field. We prove that, adding a monomial on new variables to a monomi…
Let $k$ be a field and $R=k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/I=S/I$ a graded ring. Then $R$ has a $t$-linear resolution if $I$ is generated by homogeneous elements of degree $t$, and all higher syzygies are linear. Thus $R$ has a $t$-linear resolution if ${\rm Tor}^S_{i,j}(S/I,k)=0$ if $j\ne i+t-1$. For a simplicial complex $Δ$ on $[{\bf n}]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and a field $k$, the Stanley-Reisner ring $k[Δ]$ is $k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/I$, where $I$ is generated by those squarefree monomials $x_{i_1}\cdots x_{i_k}$ for which $\{ i_1,\ldots,i_k\}$ does not belong to $Δ$. In \cite{Fr} the Stanley-Reisner rings with 2-lin…
Well ordered covers of square-free monomial ideals are subsets of the minimal generating set ordered in a certain way that give rise to a Lyubeznik resolution for the ideal, and have guaranteed nonvanishing Betti numbers in certain degrees. This paper is about square-free monomial ideals which have a well ordered cover. We consider the question of subadditivity of syzygies of square-free monomial ideals via complements in the lcm lattice of the ideal, and examine how lattice complementation breaks well ordered covers of the ideal into (well ordered) covers of subideals. We also introduce a fam…
In this thesis we investigate certain types of monomial ideals of polynomial rings over fields. We are interested in minimal free resolutions of these ideals (or equivalently the quotients of the polynomial ring by the ideals) considered as modules over the polynomial ring. There is no simple method of finding such resolutions but in the case of Stanley-Reisner ideals Hochster's formula and its variants provide a way to compute the Betti numbers of these resolutions. Even with these formulae it is not in general possible to find especially explicit or useful descriptions of the Betti numbers. …
Using the concept of $d$-collapsibility from combinatorial topology, we define chordal simplicial complexes and show that their Stanley-Reisner ideals are componentwise linear. Our construction is inspired by and an extension of "chordal clutters'' which was defined by Bigdeli, Yazdan Pour and Zaare-Nahandi in 2017, and characterizes Betti tables of all ideals with linear resolution in a polynomial ring. We show $d$-collapsible and $d$-representable complexes produce componentwise linear ideals for appropriate $d$. Along the way, we prove that there are generators that when added to the ideal,…
The Buchsbaum-Eisenbud-Horrocks rank conjecture proposes lower bounds for the Betti numbers of a graded module M based on the codimension of M. We prove a special case of this conjecture via Boij-Soederberg theory. More specifically, we show that the conjecture holds for graded modules where the regularity of M is small relative to the minimal degree of a first syzygy of M. Our approach also yields an asymptotic lower bound for the Betti numbers of powers of an ideal generated in a single degree.
Consider an ideal $I\subset K[x_1,..., x_n]$, with $K$ an arbitrary field, generated by monomials of degree two. Assuming that $I$ does not have a linear resolution, we determine the step $s$ of the minimal graded free resolution of $I$ where nonlinear syzygies first appear, we show that at this step of the resolution nonlinear syzygies are concentrated in degree $s+3$, and we compute the corresponding graded Betti number $β_{s,s+3}$. The multidegrees of these nonlinear syzygies are also determined and the corresponding multigraded Betti numbers are shown to be all equal to 1.
We parametrize the affine space of Artinian affine ideals of K[x,y] which have a given initial ideal with respect to the degree reverse lexicographic term order. The fact that the term order is degree compatible allows us to extend the parametrization to the projective case, namely zero-dimensional subschemes of the projective plane, with some extra assumption and to determine the Betti strata of these Groebner cells. This allows us to prove a formula due to A. Iarrobino for the codimension of the Betti strata of codimension two punctual schemes in the projective plane.
For an ideal I in a regular local ring (R,m)$ with residue class field K = R/m or a standard graded K-algebra R we show that for k >> 0 --> the Artin--Rees number of the syzygy modules of I^k as submodules of the free modules from a free resolution is constant, and thereby present the Artin-Rees number as a proper replacement of regularity in the local situation, --> the ring R/I^k is Golod, its Poincer{é}-Betti series is rational and the Betti numbers of the free resolution of K over R/I^k are polynomials in k of a specific degree. The first result is an extension of work of Kodiyalam and Cut…
We introduce to the context of multigraded modules the methods of modules over categories from algebraic topology and homotopy theory. We develop the basic theory quite generally, with a view toward future applications to a wide class of graded modules over graded rings. The main application in this paper is to study the Betti poset B=B(I,k) of a monomial ideal I in the polynomial ring R=k[x_1,...,x_m] over a field k, which consists of all degrees in Z^m of the homogeneous basis elements of the free modules in the minimal free Z^m-graded resolution of I over R. We show that the order simplicia…
We derive polynomial identities of arbitrary degree $n$ for syzygies degrees of numerical semigroups S_m=<d_1,...,d_m> and show that for n>=m they contain higher genera G_r=\sum_{s\in Z_>\setminus S_m}s^r of S_m. We find a number g_m=B_m-m+1 of algebraically independent genera G_r and equations, related any of g_m+1 genera, where B_m=\sum_{k=1}^{m-1}β_k and β_k denote the total and partial Betti numbers of non-symmetric semigroups. The number g_m is strongly dependent on symmetry of S_m and decreases for symmetric semigroups and complete intersections.
In this paper, we give a formula to compute all the top degree graded Betti numbers of the path ideals of a cycle. As a consequence we can give a formula to compute its projective dimension and regularity.
