Circulant graphs are an important class of interconnection networks in parallel and distributed computing. Integral circulant graphs play an important role in modeling quantum spin networks supporting the perfect state transfer as well. The integral circulant graph $\ICG_n (D)$ has the vertex set $Z_n = \{0, 1, 2, ..., n - 1\}$ and vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if $\gcd(a-b,n)\in D$, where $D \subseteq \{d : d \mid n,\ 1\leq d<n\}$. These graphs are highly symmetric, have integral spectra and some remarkable properties connecting chemical graph theory and number theory. The energy of a graph was first defined by Gutman, as the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix. Recently, there was a vast research for the pairs and families of non-cospectral graphs having equal energies. Following [R. B. Bapat, S. Pati, \textit{Energy of a graph is never an odd integer}, Bull. Kerala Math. Assoc. 1 (2004) 129--132.], we characterize the energy of integral circulant graph modulo 4. Furthermore, we establish some general closed form expressions for the energy of integral circulant graphs and generalize some results from [A. Ili\' c, \textit{The energy of unitary Cayley graphs}, Linear Algebra Appl. 431 (2009), 1881--1889.]. We close the paper by proposing some open problems and characterizing extremal graphs with minimal energy among integral circulant graphs with $n$ vertices, provided $n$ is even.
An oriented circulant graph is called integral if all eigenvalues of its Hermitian adjacency matrix are integers. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the existence of perfect state transfer ($\PST$ for short) and multiple state transfer ($\MST$ for short) on integral oriented circulant graphs. Specifically, a characterization of $\PST$ (or $\MST$) on integral oriented circulant graphs is provided. As an application, we also obtain a closed-form expression for the number of integral oriented circulant graphs with fixed order having $\PST$ (or $\MST$).
A mixed circulant graph is called integral if all eigenvalues of its Hermitian adjacency matrix are integers. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the existence of perfect state transfer (PST for short) and multiple state transfer (MST for short) on integral mixed circulant graphs. Concretely, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of PST and MST between specified pairs of vertices on integral mixed circulant graphs, respectively.
A mixed graph is called \emph{second kind hermitian integral}(or \emph{HS-integral}) if the eigenvalues of its Hermitian-adjacency matrix of second kind are integers. A mixed graph is called \emph{Eisenstein integral} if the eigenvalues of its (0, 1)-adjacency matrix are Eisenstein integers. We characterize the set $S$ for which a mixed circulant graph $\text{Circ}(\mathbb{Z}_n, S)$ is HS-integral. We also show that a mixed circulant graph is Eisenstein integral if and only if it is HS-integral. Further, the eigenvalues and the HS-eigenvalues of some oriented circulant graphs are expressed in …
The distance energy of a graph $G$ is a recently developed energy-type invariant, defined as the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of the distance matrix of $G$. There was a vast research for the pairs and families of non-cospectral graphs having equal distance energy, and most of these constructions were based on the join of graphs. A graph is called circulant if it is Cayley graph on the circulant group, i.e. its adjacency matrix is circulant. A graph is called integral if all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix are integers. Integral circulant graphs play an important role in modeli…
A mixed graph is said to be \textit{integral} if all the eigenvalues of its Hermitian adjacency matrix are integer. The \textit{mixed circulant graph} $Circ(\mathbb{Z}_n,\mathcal{C})$ is a mixed graph on the vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and edge set $\{ (a,b): b-a\in \mathcal{C} \}$, where $0\not\in \mathcal{C}$. If $\mathcal{C}$ is closed under inverse, then $Circ(\mathbb{Z}_n,\mathcal{C})$ is called a \textit{circulant graph}. We express the eigenvalues of $Circ(\mathbb{Z}_n,\mathcal{C})$ in terms of primitive $n$-th roots of unity, and find a sufficient condition for integrality of the eigenva…
The energy of a graph was introduced by {\sc Gutman} in 1978 as the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. We study the energy of integral circulant graphs, also called gcd graphs, which can be characterized by their vertex count $n$ and a set $\cal D$ of divisors of $n$ in such a way that they have vertex set $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ and edge set $\{\{a,b\}:\, a,b\in\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z},\, \gcd(a-b,n)\in {\cal D}\}$. Given an arbitrary prime power $p^s$, we determine all divisor sets maximising the energy of an integral circulant graph of order $p^s$. This en…
The concept of gcd-graphs is introduced by Klotz and Sander, which arises as a generalization of unitary Cayley graphs. The gcd-graph $X_n (d_1,...,d_k)$ has vertices $0,1,...,n-1$, and two vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent iff $\gcd(x-y,n)\in D = \{d_1,d_2,...,d_k\}$. These graphs are exactly the same as circulant graphs with integral eigenvalues characterized by So. In this paper we deal with the clique number of integral circulant graphs and investigate the conjecture proposed in \cite{klotz07} that clique number divides the number of vertices in the graph $X_n (D)$. We completely solve the…
The energy of a graph is the sum of the moduli of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. We study the energy of integral circulant graphs, also called gcd graphs, which can be characterized by their vertex count n and a set D of divisors of n in such a way that they have vertex set Zn and edge set {{a, b} : a, b in Zn; gcd(a - b, n) in D}. Using tools from convex optimization, we study the maximal energy among all integral circulant graphs of prime power order ps and varying divisor sets D. Our main result states that this maximal energy approximately lies between s(p - 1)p^(s-1) and twice t…
In this paper we determine partial answers to the question given in the title, thereby significantly extending results of Broere and Hattingh. We characterize completely those pairs of complete graphs whose tensor products are circulant. We establish that if the orders of these circulant graphs have greatest common divisor of 2, the product is circulant whenever both graphs are bipartite. We also establish that it is possible for one of the two graphs not to be circulant and the product still to be circulant.
We study the existence of quantum state transfer on non-integral circulant graphs. We find that continuous time quantum walks on quantum networks based on certain circulant graphs with $2^k$ $\left(k\in\mathbb{Z}\right)$ vertices exhibit pretty good state transfer when there is no external dynamic control over the system. We generalize few previously known results on pretty good state transfer on circulant graphs, and this way we re-discover all integral circulant graphs on $2^k$ vertices exhibiting perfect state transfer.
In this paper we study the graph parameter of burning number, introduced by Bonato, Janssen, and Roshanbin (2014). We are particular interested in determining the burning number of Circulant graphs. In this paper, we find upper and lower bounds on the burning number of classes of circulant graphs of degree at most four. The burning number is found exactly for a family of circulant graphs of degree three, and two specific families of circulant graphs of degree four. Finally, we given upper and lower bounds on the burning number of families of circulant graphs of higher degree.
We characterize the equivalence and the weak equivalence of Cayley graphs for a finite group $\C{A}$. Using these characterizations, we find degree distribution polynomials for weak equivalence of some graphs including 1) circulant graphs of prime power order, 2) circulant graphs of order $4p$, 3) circulant graphs of square free order and 4) Cayley graphs of order $p$ or $2p$. As an application, we find an enumeration formula for the number of weak equivalence classes of circulant graphs of prime power order, order $4p$ and square free order and Cayley graphs of order $p$ or $2p$.
It is well-known that the zero forcing number of a graph provides a lower bound on the minimum rank of a graph. In this paper we bound and characterize the zero forcing number of certain circulant graphs, including some bipartite circulants, cubic circulants, and circulants which are torus products, to obtain bounds on the minimum rank and the maximum nullity. We also evaluate when the zero forcing number will give equality.
Various results on factorisations of complete graphs into circulant graphs and on 2-factorisations of these circulant graphs are proved. As a consequence, a number of new results on the Oberwolfach Problem are obtained. For example, a complete solution to the Oberwolfach Problem is given for every 2-regular graph of order 2p where p = 5 (mod 8) is prime.
A number field K is a finite extension of rational number field Q. A circulant digraph integral over K means that all its eigenvalues are algebraic integers of K. In this paper we give the sufficient and necessary condition for circulant digraphs which are integral over a number field K. And we solve the Conjecture3.3 in [XM] and find it is affirmative.
The number of spanning trees in a class of directed circulant graphs with generators depending linearly on the number of vertices $βn$, and in the $n$-th and $(n-1)$-th power graphs of the $βn$-cycle are evaluated as a product of $\lceilβ/2\rceil-1$ terms.
In this paper, we provide a natural bijection between a special family of block circulant graphs and the graphs of critical pairs of the posets known as generalized crowns. In particular, every graph in this family of block circulant graphs we investigate has a generating block row that follows a symmetric growth pattern of the all ones matrix. The natural bijection provides an upper bound on the chromatic number for this infinite family of graphs.
A circulant graph H is defined on the set of vertices V=\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\} and edges E=\left\{ \left(i,j\right):\left|i-j\right|\equiv s\left(\textrm{mod}n\right),s\in S\right\} , where S\subseteq\left\{ 1,\ldots,\lceil\frac{n-1}{2}\rceil\right\} . A random circulant graph results from deleting edges of H with probability 1-p. We provide a polynomial time algorithm that approximates the solution to the minimum linear arrangement problem for random circulant graphs. We then bound the error of the approximation with high probability.
In this note, we derive closed formulas for the energy of circulant graphs generated by $1$ and $γ$, where $γ\geqslant2$ is an integer. We also find a formula for the energy of the complete graph without a Hamilton cycle.
We show that almost all circulant graphs have automorphism groups as small as possible. Of the circulant graphs that do not have automorphism group as small as possible, we give some families of integers such that it is not true that almost all circulant graphs whose order lies in any one of these families, are normal. That almost all Cayley (di)graphs whose automorphism group is not as small as possible are normal was conjectured by the second author, so these results provide counterexamples to this conjecture. It is then shown that there is a large family of integers for which almost every c…
The distinguishing chromatic number of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of colors needed to properly color the vertices of $G$ so that the trivial automorphism is the only symmetry of $G$ that preserves the coloring. We investigate the distinguishing chromatic number for Hamiltonian circulant graphs with maximum degree at most 4.
In this paper we prove that if an infinite circulant graph with $k$ distances has a perfect $2$-colouring with parameters $(b, c)$, then $b + c \leq 2k + \frac{b+c}{q^t}$ for all positive integers $t$ and primes $q$ satisfying $\frac{b+c}{gcd(b,c)}\vdots q^t$. In addition, we show that if $b + c = q^t$, then this necessary condition becomes sufficient for the existence of perfect $2$-colourings in circulant graphs.
The circulant graph $C_n(S)$ with connection set $S\subseteq \{1,2,\cdots,n\}$ is the graph with vertex set $V=\{1,\ldots, n\}$ and two vertices $x,y$ are adjacent if $|x-y|\in S$. In this paper, we will calculate the total dominator chromatic number of the circulant graph $C_n(\{a,b\})$ when $n\geq 6$, $gcd(a,n)=1$ and $ a^{-1}b\equiv 3 \pmod{n}$.
We address the problem of constructing large undirected circulant networks with given degree and diameter. First we discuss the theoretical upper bounds and their asymptotics, and then we describe and implement a computer-based method to find large circulant graphs with given parameters. For several combinations of degree and diameter, our algorithm produces the largest known circulant graphs. We summarize our findings in a table, up to degree 15 and diameter 10, and we perform a statistical analysis of this table, which can be useful for evaluating the performance of our methods, as well as o…
The canonical double cover $\mathrm{D}(Γ)$ of a graph $Γ$ is the direct product of $Γ$ and $K_2$. If $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathrm{D}(Γ))=\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ then $Γ$ is called stable; otherwise $Γ$ is called unstable. An unstable graph is nontrivially unstable if it is connected, non-bipartite and distinct vertices have different neighborhoods. In this paper we prove that every circulant graph of odd prime order is stable and there is no arc-transitive nontrivially unstable circulant graph. The latter answers a question of Wilson in 2008. We also give infinitely many counterexamples to…
Let $G$ be the circulant graph $C_n(S)$ with $S\subseteq\{ 1,\ldots,\left \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\right \rfloor\}$. We study the reduced Euler characteristic $\tildeχ$ of the independence complex $Δ(G)$ for $n=p^k$ with $p$ prime and for $n=2p^k$ with $p$ odd prime, proving that in both cases $\tildeχ$ does not vanish. We also give an example of circulant graph whose independence complex has $\tildeχ$ equals to $0$, giving a negative answer to R. Hoshino.
The WL-dimension of a graph X is the smallest positive integer m such that the m-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm correctly tests the isomorphism between X and any other graph. It is proved that the WL-dimension of any circulant graph of prime power order is at most 3, and this bound cannot be reduced. The proof is based on using theories of coherent configurations and Cayley schemes over a cyclic group.
The WL-rank of a digraph $Γ$ is defined to be the rank of the coherent configuration of $Γ$. The WL-dimension of $Γ$ is defined to be the smallest positive integer $m$ for which $Γ$ is identified by the $m$-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm. We classify the Deza circulant graphs of WL-rank $4$. In additional, it is proved that each of these graphs has WL-dimension at most $3$. Finally, we establish that some families of Deza circulant graphs have WL-rank $5$ or $6$ and WL-dimension at most $3$.
In the present paper, we investigate the complexity of infinite family of graphs $H_n=H_n(G_1,\,G_2,\ldots,G_m)$ obtained as a circulant foliation over a graph $H$ on $m$ vertices with fibers $G_{1},\,G_{2},\ldots,G_{m}.$ Each fiber $G_{i}=C_{n}(s_{i,1},\,s_{i,2},\ldots,s_{i,k_{i}})$ of this foliation is the circulant graph on $n$ vertices with jumps $s_{i,1},\,s_{i,2},\ldots,s_{i,k_{i}}.$ This family includes the family of generalized Petersen graphs, $I$-graphs, sandwiches of circulant graphs, discrete torus graphs and others. We obtain a closed formula for the number $τ(n)$ of spanning tree…
The paper concerns the automorphism groups of Cayley graphs over cyclic groups which have a rational spectrum (rational circulant graphs for short). With the aid of the techniques of Schur rings it is shown that the problem is equivalent to consider the automorphism groups of orthogonal group block structures of cyclic groups. Using this observation, the required groups are expressed in terms of generalized wreath products of symmetric groups.
We consider the number of spanning trees in circulant graphs of $βn$ vertices with generators depending linearly on $n$. The matrix tree theorem gives a closed formula of $βn$ factors, while we derive a formula of $β-1$ factors. Using the same trick, we also derive a formula for the number of spanning trees in discrete tori. Moreover, the spanning tree entropy of circulant graphs with fixed and non-fixed generators is compared.
The total chromatic number, $χ''(G)$ is the minimum number of colors which need to be assigned to obtain a total coloring of the graph $G$. The Total Coloring Conjecture (TCC) made independently by Behzad and Vizing that for any graph, $χ''(G) \leq Δ(G)+2 $, where $Δ(G)$ represents the maximum degree of $G$. In this paper we obtained the total chromatic number for some classes of four regular circulant graphs.
The energy of a graph is the sum of the moduli of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. We study the energy of integral circulant graphs, also called gcd graphs, which can be characterized by their vertex count $n$ and a set $\cal D$ of divisors of $n$ in such a way that they have vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and edge set ${{a,b}: a,b\in\mathbb{Z}_n, \gcd(a-b,n)\in {\cal D}}$. For a fixed prime power $n=p^s$ and a fixed divisor set size $|{\cal D}| =r$, we analyze the maximal energy among all matching integral circulant graphs. Let $p^{a_1} < p^{a_2} < ... < p^{a_r}$ be the elements of ${\cal …
Let $F(x)=\sum\limits_{n=1}^\inftyτ(n)x^n$ be the generating function for the number $τ(n)$ of spanning trees in the circulant graphs $C_{n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k).$ We show that $F(x)$ is a rational function with integer coefficients satisfying the property $F(x)=F(1/x).$ A similar result is also true for the circulant graphs of odd valency $C_{2n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k,n).$ We illustrate the obtained results by a series of examples.
A nut graph is a simple graph whose adjacency matrix has the eigenvalue~0 with multiplicity~1 such that its corresponding eigenvector has no zero entries. Motivated by a question of Fowler et al.~[\emph{Disc. Math. Graph Theory} 40 (2020), 533--557] to determine the pairs $(n,d)$ for which a vertex-transitive nut graph of order $n$ and degree $d$ exists, Ba\v sić et al.\ [\arxiv{2102.04418}, 2021] initiated the study of circulant nut graphs. Here we first show that the generator set of a circulant nut graph necessarily contains equally many even and odd integers. Then we characterize circulant…
A well-known problem in Algebraic Combinatorics, is the enumeration of circulant graphs. The failure of Adam's Conjecture for such graphs with order containing a repeated prime, led researchers to investigate the problem using two different methods, namely the multiplier method and the structural method. The former makes use of isomorphism theorems whereas the latter involves Schur rings. Both these methods have already been used to count the number of non-isomorphic circulants of order $p^2$. This research focuses on the extension of these two methods to enumerate circulants of order $p^3$, i…
New criteria for which Cayley graphs of cyclic groups of any order can be completely determined--up to isomorphism--by the eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices is presented. Secondly, a new construction for pairs of nonisomorphic Cayley graphs of cyclic groups with the same list of eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices will be presented.
We consider the degree-diameter problem for undirected and directed circulant graphs. To date, attempts to generate families of large circulant graphs of arbitrary degree for a given diameter have concentrated mainly on the diameter 2 case. We present a direct product construction yielding improved bounds for small diameters and introduce a new general technique for "stitching" together circulant graphs which enables us to improve the current best known asymptotic orders for every diameter. As an application, we use our constructions in the directed case to obtain upper bounds on the minimum s…
Introduced by Albertson et al. \cite{albertson}, the distinguishing number $D(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the least integer $r$ such that there is a $r$-labeling of the vertices of $G$ that is not preserved by any nontrivial automorphism of $G$. Most of graphs studied in literature have 2 as a distinguishing number value except complete, multipartite graphs or cartesian product of complete graphs depending on $n$. In this paper, we study circulant graphs of order $n$ where the adjacency is defined using a symmetric subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, called generator. We give a construction of a family of…
The transition matrix of a graph $G$ corresponding to the adjacency matrix $A$ is defined by $H(t):=\exp{\left(-itA\right)},$ where $t\in\mathbb{R}$. The graph is said to exhibit pretty good state transfer between a pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ if there exists a sequence $\left\lbrace t_k\right\rbrace$ of real numbers such that $\lim\limits_{k\rightarrow\infty} H(t_k) {\bf e}_u=γ{\bf e}_v$, where $γ$ is a complex number of unit modulus. We classify some circulant graphs exhibiting or not exhibiting pretty good state transfer. This generalize several pre-existing results on circulant graphs adm…
The natural infinite analogue of a (finite) Hamilton cycle is a two-way-infinite Hamilton path (connected spanning 2-valent subgraph). Although it is known that every connected $2k$-valent infinite circulant graph has a two-way-infinite Hamilton path, there exist many such graphs that do not have a decomposition into $k$ edge-disjoint two-way-infinite Hamilton paths. This contrasts with the finite case where it is conjectured that every $2k$-valent connected circulant graph has a decomposition into $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We settle the problem of decomposing $2k$-valent infinite cir…
