In [Discrete Mathematics 306 (2005) 153-158], So proposed a conjecture saying that integral circulant graphs with different connection sets have different spectra. This conjecture is still open. We prove that this conjecture holds for integral circulant graphs whose orders have prime factorization of $4$ types.
An oriented circulant graph is called integral if all eigenvalues of its Hermitian adjacency matrix are integers. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the existence of perfect state transfer ($\PST$ for short) and multiple state transfer ($\MST$ for short) on integral oriented circulant graphs. Specifically, a characterization of $\PST$ (or $\MST$) on integral oriented circulant graphs is provided. As an application, we also obtain a closed-form expression for the number of integral oriented circulant graphs with fixed order having $\PST$ (or $\MST$).
We describe an approach to the circulant Hadamard conjecture based on Walsh-Fourier analysis. We show that the existence of a circulant Hadamard matrix of order $n$ is equivalent to the existence of a non-trivial solution of a certain homogenous linear system of equations. Based on this system, a possible way of proving the conjecture is proposed.
A mixed circulant graph is called integral if all eigenvalues of its Hermitian adjacency matrix are integers. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the existence of perfect state transfer (PST for short) and multiple state transfer (MST for short) on integral mixed circulant graphs. Concretely, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of PST and MST between specified pairs of vertices on integral mixed circulant graphs, respectively.
A mixed graph is called \emph{second kind hermitian integral}(or \emph{HS-integral}) if the eigenvalues of its Hermitian-adjacency matrix of second kind are integers. A mixed graph is called \emph{Eisenstein integral} if the eigenvalues of its (0, 1)-adjacency matrix are Eisenstein integers. We characterize the set $S$ for which a mixed circulant graph $\text{Circ}(\mathbb{Z}_n, S)$ is HS-integral. We also show that a mixed circulant graph is Eisenstein integral if and only if it is HS-integral. Further, the eigenvalues and the HS-eigenvalues of some oriented circulant graphs are expressed in …
The distance energy of a graph $G$ is a recently developed energy-type invariant, defined as the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of the distance matrix of $G$. There was a vast research for the pairs and families of non-cospectral graphs having equal distance energy, and most of these constructions were based on the join of graphs. A graph is called circulant if it is Cayley graph on the circulant group, i.e. its adjacency matrix is circulant. A graph is called integral if all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix are integers. Integral circulant graphs play an important role in modeli…
A mixed graph is said to be \textit{integral} if all the eigenvalues of its Hermitian adjacency matrix are integer. The \textit{mixed circulant graph} $Circ(\mathbb{Z}_n,\mathcal{C})$ is a mixed graph on the vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and edge set $\{ (a,b): b-a\in \mathcal{C} \}$, where $0\not\in \mathcal{C}$. If $\mathcal{C}$ is closed under inverse, then $Circ(\mathbb{Z}_n,\mathcal{C})$ is called a \textit{circulant graph}. We express the eigenvalues of $Circ(\mathbb{Z}_n,\mathcal{C})$ in terms of primitive $n$-th roots of unity, and find a sufficient condition for integrality of the eigenva…
The energy of a graph was introduced by {\sc Gutman} in 1978 as the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. We study the energy of integral circulant graphs, also called gcd graphs, which can be characterized by their vertex count $n$ and a set $\cal D$ of divisors of $n$ in such a way that they have vertex set $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ and edge set $\{\{a,b\}:\, a,b\in\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z},\, \gcd(a-b,n)\in {\cal D}\}$. Given an arbitrary prime power $p^s$, we determine all divisor sets maximising the energy of an integral circulant graph of order $p^s$. This en…
Circulant graphs are an important class of interconnection networks in parallel and distributed computing. Integral circulant graphs play an important role in modeling quantum spin networks supporting the perfect state transfer as well. The integral circulant graph $\ICG_n (D)$ has the vertex set $Z_n = \{0, 1, 2, ..., n - 1\}$ and vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if $\gcd(a-b,n)\in D$, where $D \subseteq \{d : d \mid n,\ 1\leq d<n\}$. These graphs are highly symmetric, have integral spectra and some remarkable properties connecting chemical graph theory and number theory. The energy of a gra…
The concept of gcd-graphs is introduced by Klotz and Sander, which arises as a generalization of unitary Cayley graphs. The gcd-graph $X_n (d_1,...,d_k)$ has vertices $0,1,...,n-1$, and two vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent iff $\gcd(x-y,n)\in D = \{d_1,d_2,...,d_k\}$. These graphs are exactly the same as circulant graphs with integral eigenvalues characterized by So. In this paper we deal with the clique number of integral circulant graphs and investigate the conjecture proposed in \cite{klotz07} that clique number divides the number of vertices in the graph $X_n (D)$. We completely solve the…
We investigate the problem of counting the real or complex Hadamard matrices which are circulant, by using analytic methods. Our main observation is the fact that for $|q_0|=...=|q_{N-1}|=1$ the quantity $Φ=\sum_{i+k=j+l}\frac{q_iq_k}{q_jq_l}$ satisfies $Φ\geq N^2$, with equality if and only if $q=(q_i)$ is the eigenvalue vector of a rescaled circulant complex Hadamard matrix. This suggests three analytic problems, namely: (1) the brute-force minimization of $Φ$, (2) the study of the critical points of $Φ$, and (3) the computation of the moments of $Φ$. We explore here these questions, with so…
The energy of a graph is the sum of the moduli of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. We study the energy of integral circulant graphs, also called gcd graphs, which can be characterized by their vertex count n and a set D of divisors of n in such a way that they have vertex set Zn and edge set {{a, b} : a, b in Zn; gcd(a - b, n) in D}. Using tools from convex optimization, we study the maximal energy among all integral circulant graphs of prime power order ps and varying divisor sets D. Our main result states that this maximal energy approximately lies between s(p - 1)p^(s-1) and twice t…
We study the existence of quantum state transfer on non-integral circulant graphs. We find that continuous time quantum walks on quantum networks based on certain circulant graphs with $2^k$ $\left(k\in\mathbb{Z}\right)$ vertices exhibit pretty good state transfer when there is no external dynamic control over the system. We generalize few previously known results on pretty good state transfer on circulant graphs, and this way we re-discover all integral circulant graphs on $2^k$ vertices exhibiting perfect state transfer.
We study the existence and construction of circulant matrices $C$ of order $n\geq2$ with diagonal entries $d\geq0$, off-diagonal entries $\pm1$ and mutually orthogonal rows. These matrices generalize circulant conference ($d=0$) and circulant Hadamard ($d=1$) matrices. We demonstrate that matrices $C$ exist for every order $n$ and for $d$ chosen such that $n=2d+2$, and we find all solutions $C$ with this property. Furthermore, we prove that if $C$ is symmetric, or $n-1$ is prime, or $d$ is not an odd integer, then necessarily $n=2d+2$. Finally, we conjecture that the relation $n=2d+2$ holds fo…
We show that an $n\times n$ circulant Hadamard matrix must satisfy a family of congruence equations that have solutions only when $n \leq 4$, proving Ryser's 1963 conjecture that no such matrices exist for $n>4$.
A number field K is a finite extension of rational number field Q. A circulant digraph integral over K means that all its eigenvalues are algebraic integers of K. In this paper we give the sufficient and necessary condition for circulant digraphs which are integral over a number field K. And we solve the Conjecture3.3 in [XM] and find it is affirmative.
The canonical double cover $B(X)$ of a graph $X$ is the direct product of $X$ and $K_2$. If $Aut(B(X)) \cong Aut(X) \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ then $X$ is called stable; otherwise $X$ is called unstable. An unstable graph is nontrivially unstable if it is connected, non-bipartite and distinct vertices have different neighborhoods. Circulant is a Cayley graph on a cyclic group. Qin et al. conjectured in [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 136 (2019), 154-169] that there are no nontrivialy unstable circulants of odd order. In this paper we prove this conjecture.
We show that almost all circulant graphs have automorphism groups as small as possible. Of the circulant graphs that do not have automorphism group as small as possible, we give some families of integers such that it is not true that almost all circulant graphs whose order lies in any one of these families, are normal. That almost all Cayley (di)graphs whose automorphism group is not as small as possible are normal was conjectured by the second author, so these results provide counterexamples to this conjecture. It is then shown that there is a large family of integers for which almost every c…
The energy of a graph is the sum of the moduli of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. We study the energy of integral circulant graphs, also called gcd graphs, which can be characterized by their vertex count $n$ and a set $\cal D$ of divisors of $n$ in such a way that they have vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and edge set ${{a,b}: a,b\in\mathbb{Z}_n, \gcd(a-b,n)\in {\cal D}}$. For a fixed prime power $n=p^s$ and a fixed divisor set size $|{\cal D}| =r$, we analyze the maximal energy among all matching integral circulant graphs. Let $p^{a_1} < p^{a_2} < ... < p^{a_r}$ be the elements of ${\cal …
In this paper, we determine the bound of the valency of the odd circulant graph which guarantees to be a Ramanujan graph for each fixed number of vertices. In almost of the cases, the bound coincides with the trivial bound, which comes from the trivial estimate of the largest non-trivial eigenvalue of the circulant graph. As exceptional cases, the bound in fact exceeds the trivial one by two. We then prove that such exceptionals occur only in the cases where the number of vertices has at most two prime factors and is represented by a quadratic polynomial in a finite family and, moreover, under…
Turyn prove that if a circulant Hadamard matrix of order $n$ exists then $n$ must be of the form $n=4m^{2}$ for some odd integer $m$. In this paper we use the structure constant of Schur ring of $\Z_{2}^{4m^{2}}$ to prove that there is no circulant Hadamard matrix in $\Z_{2}^{4m^{2}}$ except possibly for sequences with Hamming weight $a+b$, with $\frac{m^{2}-m}{2}\leq a\leq\frac{3m^{2}-m}{2}$ and $b=2m^{2}-m-a$ and with $\frac{m^{2}+m}{2}\leq 2m^{2}-a\leq\frac{3m^{2}+m}{2}$ and $b=m+a$.
For an integer $k\geq 1$, a graph is called a $k$-circulant if its automorphism group contains a cyclic semiregular subgroup with $k$ orbits on the vertices. We show that, if $k$ is even, there exist infinitely many cubic arc-transitive $k$-circulants. We conjecture that, if $k$ is odd, then a cubic arc-transitive $k$-circulant has order at most $6k^2$. Our main result is a proof of this conjecture when $k$ is squarefree and coprime to $6$.
This paper considers the degree-diameter problem for undirected circulant graphs. For degrees 10 and 11 newly discovered families of circulant graphs of arbitrary diameter are presented which are largest known and are conjectured to be extremal. They are also the largest-known Abelian Cayley graphs of these degrees. For each such family the order of every graph in the family is defined by a quintic polynomial function of the diameter which is specific to the family. The elements of the generating set for each graph are similarly defined by a set of polynomials in the diameter. The existence of…
This paper considers the degree-diameter problem for undirected circulant graphs. The focus is on extremal graphs of given (small) degree and arbitrary diameter. The published literature only covers graphs of up to degree 7. The approach used to establish the results for degree 6 and 7 has been extended successfully to degree 8 and 9. Candidate graphs are defined as functions of the diameter for both degree 8 and degree 9. They are proven to be extremal for small diameters. They establish new lower bounds for all greater diameters, and are conjectured to be extremal. The existence of the degre…
A nut graph is a simple graph whose adjacency matrix has the eigenvalue~0 with multiplicity~1 such that its corresponding eigenvector has no zero entries. Motivated by a question of Fowler et al.~[\emph{Disc. Math. Graph Theory} 40 (2020), 533--557] to determine the pairs $(n,d)$ for which a vertex-transitive nut graph of order $n$ and degree $d$ exists, Ba\v sić et al.\ [\arxiv{2102.04418}, 2021] initiated the study of circulant nut graphs. Here we first show that the generator set of a circulant nut graph necessarily contains equally many even and odd integers. Then we characterize circulant…
The total chromatic number, $χ''(G)$ is the minimum number of colors which need to be assigned to obtain a total coloring of the graph $G$. The Total Coloring Conjecture (TCC) made independently by Behzad and Vizing that for any graph, $χ''(G) \leq Δ(G)+2 $, where $Δ(G)$ represents the maximum degree of $G$. In this paper we obtained the total chromatic number for some classes of four regular circulant graphs.
We propose new families of graphs which exhibit quantum perfect state transfer. Our constructions are based on the join operator on graphs, its circulant generalizations, and the Cartesian product of graphs. We build upon the results of Bašić et al \cite{bps09,bp09} and construct new integral circulants and regular graphs with perfect state transfer. More specifically, we show that the integral circulant $\textsc{ICG}_{n}(\{2,n/2^{b}\} \cup Q)$ has perfect state transfer, where $b \in \{1,2\}$, $n$ is a multiple of 16 and $Q$ is a subset of the odd divisors of $n$. Using the standard join of g…
The canonical double cover $\mathrm{D}(Γ)$ of a graph $Γ$ is the direct product of $Γ$ and $K_2$. If $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathrm{D}(Γ))=\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ then $Γ$ is called stable; otherwise $Γ$ is called unstable. An unstable graph is nontrivially unstable if it is connected, non-bipartite and distinct vertices have different neighborhoods. In this paper we prove that every circulant graph of odd prime order is stable and there is no arc-transitive nontrivially unstable circulant graph. The latter answers a question of Wilson in 2008. We also give infinitely many counterexamples to…
A well-known problem in Algebraic Combinatorics, is the enumeration of circulant graphs. The failure of Adam's Conjecture for such graphs with order containing a repeated prime, led researchers to investigate the problem using two different methods, namely the multiplier method and the structural method. The former makes use of isomorphism theorems whereas the latter involves Schur rings. Both these methods have already been used to count the number of non-isomorphic circulants of order $p^2$. This research focuses on the extension of these two methods to enumerate circulants of order $p^3$, i…
The natural infinite analogue of a (finite) Hamilton cycle is a two-way-infinite Hamilton path (connected spanning 2-valent subgraph). Although it is known that every connected $2k$-valent infinite circulant graph has a two-way-infinite Hamilton path, there exist many such graphs that do not have a decomposition into $k$ edge-disjoint two-way-infinite Hamilton paths. This contrasts with the finite case where it is conjectured that every $2k$-valent connected circulant graph has a decomposition into $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We settle the problem of decomposing $2k$-valent infinite cir…
In this paper we obtain precise asymptotics for certain families of graphs, namely circulant graphs and degenerating discrete tori. The asymptotics contain interesting constants from number theory among which some can be interpreted as corresponding values for continuous limiting objects. We answer one question formulated in a paper from Atajan, Yong and Inaba in [1] and formulate a conjecture in relation to the paper from Zhang, Yong and Golin [21]. A crucial ingredient in the proof is to use the matrix tree theorem and express the combinatorial laplacian determinant in terms of Bessel functi…
A vertex coloring of a given simple graph $G=(V,E)$ with $k$ colors ($k$-coloring) is a map from its vertex set to the set of integers $\{1,2,3,\dots, k\}$. A coloring is called perfect if the multiset of colors appearing on the neighbours of any vertex depends only on the color of the vertex. We consider perfect colorings of Cayley graphs of the additive group of integers with generating set $\{1,-1,3,-3,5,-5,\dots, 2n-1,1-2n\}$ for a positive integer $n$. We enumerate perfect $2$-colorings of the graphs under consideration and state the conjecture generalizing the main result to an arbitrary…
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A$. The transition matrix of $G$ relative to $A$ is defined by $H(t):=\exp{\left(-itA\right)},\;t\in\Rl$. The graph $G$ is said to admit pretty good state transfer between a pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ if there exists a sequence of real numbers $\{t_k\}$ and a complex number $γ$ of unit modulus such that $\lim\limits_{k\rightarrow\infty} H(t_k) e_u=γe_v.$ We find that pretty good state transfer occurs in a cycle on $n$ vertices if and only if $n$ is a power of two and it occurs between every pair of antipodal vertices. In addition, we look for pretty …
A Hamiltonian decomposition of $G$ is a partition of its edge set into disjoint Hamilton cycles. Manikandan and Paulraja conjectured that if $G$ and $H$ are Hamilton cycle decomposable circulant graphs with at least one of them is nonbipartite, then their tensor product is Hamilton cycle decomposable. In this paper, we have proved that, if $G$ is a Hamilton cycle decomposable circulant graph with certain properties and $H$ is a Hamilton cycle decomposable multigraph, then their tensor product is Hamilton cycle decomposable. In particular, tensor products of certain sparse Hamilton cycle decomp…
Two methods, structural (constructive) and multiplier (analytical), of exact enumeration of undirected and directed circulant graphs of orders 27 and 125 are elaborated and represented in detail here together with intermediate and final numerical data. The first method is based on the known useful classification of circulant graphs in terms of $S$-rings and results in exhaustive listing (with the use of COCO and GAP) of all corresponding $S$-rings of the indicated orders. The latter method is conducted in the framework of a general approach developed earlier for counting circulant graphs of pr…
We consider circulant graphs G(r,N) where the vertices are the integers modulo N and the neighbours of 0 are {-r,...,-1,1,...,r}. The energy of G(r,N) is a trigonometric sum of N*r terms. For low values of r we compute this sum explicitly. We also study the asymptotics of the energy of G(r,N) for big N. There is a known integral formula for the linear growth coefficient, we find a new expression of the form of a finite trigonometric sum with r terms. As an application we show that in the family G(r,N) for r less or equal than 4 there is a finite number of hyperenergetic graphs. On the other ha…
From a generalization to $Z^n$ of the concept of congruence we define a family of regular digraphs or graphs called multidimensional circulants, which turn out to be Cayley (di)graphs of Abelian groups. This paper is mainly devoted to show the relationship between the Smith normal form for integral matrices and the dimensions of such (di)graphs, that is the minimum ranks of the groups they can arise from. In particular, those 2-step multidimensional circulants which are circulants, that is Cayley (di)graphs of cyclic groups, are fully characterized. In addition, a reasoning due to Lawrence is …
A graph $G$ is a prime distance graph (respectively, a 2-odd graph) if its vertices can be labeled with distinct integers such that for any two adjacent vertices, the difference of their labels is prime (either 2 or odd). We prove that trees, cycles, and bipartite graphs are prime distance graphs, and that Dutch windmill graphs and paper mill graphs are prime distance graphs if and only if the Twin Prime Conjecture and dePolignac's Conjecture are true, respectively. We give a characterization of 2-odd graphs in terms of edge colorings, and we use this characterization to determine which circul…
A Frobenius group is a transitive permutation group which is not regular but only the identity element can fix two points. Such a group can be expressed as the semi-direct product $G = K \rtimes H$ of a nilpotent normal subgroup $K$ and another group $H$ fixing a point. A first-kind $G$-Frobenius graph is a connected Cayley graph on $K$ with connection set an $H$-orbit $a^H$ on $K$ that generates $K$, where $H$ has an even order or $a$ is an involution. It is known that the first-kind Frobenius graphs admit attractive routing and gossiping algorithms. A complete rotation in a Cayley graph on a…
The $c_2$ invariant is an arithmetic graph invariant introduced by Schnetz and developed by Brown and Schnetz in order to better understand Feynman integrals. This document looks at the special case where the graph in question is a 4-regular circulant graph with one vertex removed; call such a graph a decompletion of a circulant graph. The $c_2$ invariant for the prime $2$ is computed in the case of the decompletion of circulant graphs $C_n(1,3)$ and $C_{2k+2}(1,k)$. For any prime $p$ and for the previous two families of circulant graphs along with the further families $C_n(1,4)$, $C_n(1,5)$, …
It is well-known that the famous Selberg integral is equivalent to the Morris constant term identity. In 1998, Baker and Forrester conjectured a generalization of the $q$-Morris constant term identity. This conjecture was proved and extended by Károlyi, Nagy, Petrov and Volkov in 2015. In this paper, we obtain two symmetric function generalizations of the $q$-Baker--Forrester ex-conjecture. These includes: (i) a $q$-Baker--Forrester type constant term identity for a product of a complete symmetric function and a Macdonald polynomial; (ii) a complete symmetric function generalization of KNPV's …
Using Jack polynomials, Goulden and Jackson have introduced a one parameter deformation $τ_b$ of the generating series of bipartite maps, which generalizes the partition function of $β$-ensembles of random matrices. The Matching-Jack conjecture suggests that the coefficients $c^λ_{μ,ν}$ of the function $τ_b$ in the power-sum basis are non-negative integer polynomials in the deformation parameter $b$. Dołęga and Féray have proved in 2016 the "polynomiality" part in the Matching-Jack conjecture, namely that coefficients $c^λ_{μ,ν}$ are in $\mathbb{Q}[b]$. In this paper, we prove the "integrality…
