In this paper, we compute the conjugacy classes and the list of irreducible characters of GSp(4,q), where q is odd. We also determine precisely which irreducible characters are non-cuspidal and which are generic. These characters are then used to compute dimensions of certain subspaces of fixed vectors of smooth admissible non-supercuspidal representations of GSp(4,F), where F is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero with residue field of order q.
We extend the local newform theory of B. Roberts and R. Schmidt for generic, irreducible, admissible representations of PGSp(4) to that for GSp(4). The newform matches to the Langlands parameter.
We prove that every irreducible, admissible representation of GSp(4,F), where F is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero, admits a Bessel functional, provided the representation is not one-dimensional. Given such a representation, we explicitly determine the set of all split Bessel functionals admitted by the representation, and prove that these functionals are unique. If the representation is not supercuspidal, or in an L-packet with a non-supercuspidal representation, we explicitly determine the set of all Bessel functionals admitted by the representation, and prove that these…
We correct two errors in the paper "Sur les représentations non ramifiées des groupes réductifs p-adiques; l'exemple de GSp(4)": the first in the study of an involution on the irreducible unramified representations of a semi-simple group, the second in the description of representations of the group GSp(4).
For local non-archimedean fields $k$, Piatetski-Shapiro has defined local spinor $L$-factors for irreducible representations $Π$ of $\mathrm{GSp}(4,k)$ of dimension $>1$, attached to a choice of a Bessel model $Λ$. We classify regular poles that do not come from the asymptotic of the Bessel functions in the Bessel model. For anisotropic Bessel models there are no such subregular poles.
Each orthogonal group $\OO(n)$ has a nontrivial $\GL(1)$-extension, which we call $\GPin(n)$. The identity component of $\GPin(n)$ is the more familiar $\GSpin(n)$, the general Spin group. We prove that the restriction to $\GPin(n-1)$ of an irreducible admissible representation of $\GPin(n)$ over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero is multiplicity free and also prove the analogous theorem for $\GSpin(n)$. Our proof uses the method of Aizenbud, Gourevitch, Rallis and Schiffman, who proved the analogous theorem for $\OO(n)$, and Waldspurger, who proved that for $\SO(n)$. We also …
We prove several multiplicity one theorems in this paper. For k a local field not of characteristic two, and V a symplectic space over k, any irreducible admissible representation of the symplectic similitude group GSp(V) decomposes with multiplicity one when restricted to the symplectic group Sp(V). We prove the analogous result for GO(V) and O(V), where V is an orthogonal space over k. When k is non-archimedean, we prove the uniqueness of Fourier-Jacobi models for representations of GSp(4), and the existence of such models for supercuspidal representations of GSp(4).
In the first part of the book, we classify the automorphic representations of {\rm GSp}(2) which are invariant under tensor product with a given quadratic idèle class character, via the lifting of automorphic representations of twisted endoscopic groups. In the second part of the book, we classify the admissible representations of {\rm GSp}(2, k), k a p-adic field, which are invariant under tensor product with a given quadratic character of k^\times. This classification is given in terms of twisted character identities among the admissible representations of {\rm GSp}(2, k) and those of its tw…
We prove the local Langlands correspondence for GSp_4(F), where F is a non-archimedean local field of positive characteristic with residue characteristic > 2.
Let A be the adele ring over a totally real number field F. For cohomological cuspidal automorphic irreducible representations of GSp(4,A) coming from weak endoscopic or Saito-Kurokawa Lifts we determine the local invariant spaces under the first principal congruence subgroup at the non-archimedean places. For F=Q this gives rise to dimension formulas regarding certain subspaces of the inner cohomology of the genus two Shimura variety corresponding to the principal congruence subgroup level N=2. We prove the conjectures made by Bergström, Faber and van der Geer in a recent paper.
We explicitly compute the adjoint L-function of those L-packets of representations of the group GSp(4) over a p-adic field of characteristic zero that contain non-supercuspidal representations. As an application we verify a conjecture of Gross-Prasad and Rallis in this case. The conjecture states that the adjoint L-function has a pole at s=1 if and only if the L-packet contains a generic representation.
We give a summary of results for dimensions of spaces of cuspidal Siegel modular forms of degree 2. These results together with a list of dimensions of the irreducible representations of the finite groups GSp(4,Fp) are then used to produce bounds for dimensions of spaces of newforms with respect to principal congruence subgroups of odd square-free level.
We realize the non-split Bessel model of Novodvorsky and Piatetski-Shapiro as a generalized Gelfand-Graev representation of GSp(4), as suggested by Kawanaka. With uniqueness of the model already established by Novodvorsky and Piatetski-Shapiro, we establish existence of a Bessel model for unramified principal series representations. We then connect the Iwahori-fixed vectors in the Bessel model to a linear character of the Hecke algebra of GSp(4) following the method outlined more generally by Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg. We use this connection to calculate the image of Iwahori-fixed vectors …
This paper proves the local Langlands conjecture for the non quasi-split inner form Sp(1,1) of Sp(4) over a p-adic field of characteristic 0, by studying the restriction of representations from the non quasi-split inner form GSp(1,1) of GSp(4) to Sp(1,1). The L-packets for Sp(1,1) are constructed based on the earlier work on the local Langlands correspondence for GSp(1,1) by Gan and Tantono. To parameterize them in terms of so-called S-groups, we establish and utilize the local Langlands correspondence for reductive dual groups which participate in the theta correspondence with Sp(1,1) and GSp…
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero, let $(π,V)$ be an irreducible, admissible representation of $\GSp(4,F)$ with trivial central character, and let $χ$ be a quadratic character of $F^\times$ with conductor $c(χ)>1$. We define a twisting operator $T_χ$ from paramodular vectors for $π$ of level $n$ to paramodular vectors for $χ\otimes π$ of level $\max(n+2c(χ),4c(χ))$, and prove that this operator has properties analogous to the well-known $\GL(2)$ twisting operator.
Let F_0 be a non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic and let G be the unramified unitary group U(2,2) defined over F_0. In this paper, we give a classification of the irreducible smooth representations of G of non-integral level using the Hecke algebraic method developed by Allen Moy for GSp(4).
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field and $π$ be an irreducible smooth representation of $\textrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)$. In this paper, we show that if $π$ and $π^κ$ are both generic for a common generic character of the maximal unipotent of a fixed Borel, then $π\cong π^κ$, where $π^κ$ is the representation induced by the conjugation action of an element $κ\in \textrm{GSp}_{2n}(F)$. This result is a consequence of the standard local Langlands conjecture and local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture. As a consequence, we extend the dependence relation of the local Rankin-Selberg gamma factors for $\textrm{Sp}_{2n}\times…
In this note, we determine the irreducible characters for the simple algebraic groups of type $A_5$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic 3, by using a theorem of Xi Nanhua and the Matlab software. In order to obtain higher speed than in Jiachen et al we modify the algorithm to compute the irreducible characters.
In this paper, we interpret the theta rank of an irreducible character of a finite classical group in terms of the data from the Lusztig classification. Then we prove the following two results: (1) the agreement of the $U$-rank and the theta rank for any irreducible character of low Theta rank; (2) the agreement of the parabolic asymptotic rank and the theta rank for any irreducible character.
We consider non-trivial irreducible tensor products of modular representations of a symmetric group $S_n$ in characteristic 2 for even $n$ completing the proof of a classification conjecture of Gow and Kleshchev about such products.
Let G be an almost simple, simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. In this paper we restate our conjecture from 1979 on the characters of irreducible modular representations of G so that it is now directly applicable to any dominant highest weight.
Let p be an odd prime, and A_n the alternating group of degree n. We determine which ordinary irreducible representations of A_n remain irreducible in characteristic p, verifying the author's conjecture from [Represent. Theory 14, 601-626]. Given the preparatory work done in [op. cit.], our task is to determine which self-conjugate partitions label Specht modules for the symmetric group in characteristic p having exactly two composition factors. This is accomplished through the use of the Robinson-Brundan-Kleshchev 'i-restriction' functors, together with known results on decomposition numbers …
Let $G$ be a finite group isomorphic to $SL_n(q)$ or $SU_n(q)$ for some prime power $q$. In this paper, we give an explicit description of the action of automorphisms of $G$ on the set of its irreducible complex characters. This is done by showing that irreducible constituents of restrictions of irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ (resp. $GU_n(q)$) to $SL_n(q)$ (resp. $SU_n(q)$) can be distinguished by the rational classes of their unipotent support which are equivariant under the action of automorphisms. Meanwhile, we give a criterion to explicitly determine whether an irreducible character i…
We develop a new method to solve the irreducible character problem for a wide class of modules over the general linear superalgebra, including all the finite-dimensional modules, by directly relating the problem to the classical Kazhdan-Lusztig theory. We further verify a parabolic version of a conjecture of Brundan on the irreducible characters in the BGG category $\mc{O}$ of the general linear superalgebra. We also prove the super duality conjecture.
For a finite group $G$ and complex character $χ\in\mathrm{Irr}(G)$ that restricts irreducibly to a normal subgroup $N\vartriangleleft G,$ we prove a theorem about Clifford correspondences between the characters of subgroups of $G$ that induce $χ.$
Let $\bbk$ be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic $p$. If $p$ does not divide $n$, irreducible modules over $\frak {sl}_n$ for regular and subregular nilpotent representations have already known(see \cite{Jan2} and \cite{Jan3}). In this article, we investigate the question when $p$ divides $n$, and precisely describe simple modules of $\frak {sl}_n$ for regular and subregular nilpotent representations.
For a root system R, a field K and an invertible element q in K let U be the associated quantum group, defined via Lusztig's divided powers construction. We study the irreducible characters of this algebra with integral (but not necessarily dominant) highest weight. If the l-th cyclotomic polynomial vanishes when evaluated at q, then these characters exhibit a certain l-periodicity.
In an earlier paper [1] it was shown that the Frobenius compound characters for the symmetric groups are related to the irreducible characters by a linear relation that involves a unitriagular coupling matrix that gives the Frobenius characters in terms of linear combinations of the irreducible characters. It is desirable to invert this relationship since we have formulas for the Frobenius characters and want the values for the irreducible characters. This inversion is straightforward and yields both the irreducible characters but also the coupling matrix that turns out to be the Kostka matrix…
We prove a character formula for the irreducible modules from the category $\mathcal{O}$ over the simple affine vertex algebra of type $A_n$ and $C_n$ $(n \geq 2)$ of level $k=-1$. We also give a conjectured character formula for types $D_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$ and levels $k=-1, \cdots, -b$, where $b=2,3,4,6$ respectively.
Let $G$ be a finite symmetric, general linear, or general unitary group defined over a field of characteristic coprime to $3$. We construct a canonical correspondence between irreducible characters of degree coprime to $3$ of $G$ and those of $N_{G}(P)$, where $P$ is a Sylow $3$-subgroup of $G$. Since our bijections commute with the action of the absolute Galois group over the rationals, we conclude that fields of values of character correspondents are the same.
For any finite group G it is an interesting question to ask which ordinary irreducible representations of G remain irreducible in a given characteristic p. We answer this question for p=2 when G is the proper double cover of the alternating group. As a key ingredient in the proof, we prove a formula for the decomposition numbers in Rouquier blocks of double covers of symmetric groups, in terms of Schur P-functions.
If chi is an irreducible character of a finite group G then the support of chi is the subset of G on which chi does not vanish. In this note, we study the supports of characters of certain classes of p-groups (a p-group is a finite group of prime power order). We show that if chi is an irreducible character of a metabelian p-group P, then the support of chi contains at most |P|/chi(1)^2 conjugacy classes, and we give a bound on the orders of the elements in the support. We give more precise results for p-groups of nilpotence class at most 3 and groups of order dividing p^9.
In this paper, we obtained character formulas of irreducible unitary representations of $U(n, n+1)$ by using Howe's correspondence and the Cauchy--Harish-Chandra integral. The representations of $U(n, n+1)$ we are dealing with are obtained from a double lifting of a representation of $U(1)$ via the dual pairs $(U(1), U(1, 1))$ and $(U(1, 1), U(n, n+1))$.
In this paper we study finite p-solvable groups having irreducible complex characters chi in Irr(G) which take roots of unity values on the p-singular elements of G.
In this note, we formulate an observation that "almost all" irreducible ordinary characters of finite groups of Lie type remain irreducible when restricted to the derived subgroups. To see this, key ingredients are some asymptotic results for conjugacy classes of finite groups of Lie type and strongly regular semisimple elements in dual groups.
A complex irreducible character of a finite group G is said to be p-constant, for some prime p dividing the order of G, if it takes constant value at the set of p-singular elements of G. In this paper we classify irreducible p-constant characters for finite reflection groups, nilpotent groups and complete monomial groups. We also propose some conjectures about the structure of the groups admitting such characters.
We shall derive Kazhdan-Lusztig type character formula for the irreducible modules with arbitrary non-critical highest weights over affine Lie algebras from the rational case by using the translation functor, the Enright functor and Jantzen's deformation argument.
We establish an irreducibility property for the characters of finite dimensional, irreducible representations of simple Lie algebras (or simple algebraic groups) over the complex numbers, i.e., that the characters of irreducible representations are irreducible after dividing out by (generalized) Weyl denominator type factors. For $SL(r)$ the irreducibility result is the following: let $λ=(a_1\geq a_2\geq ... a_{r-1}\geq 0)$ be the highest weight of an irreducible rational representation $V_λ$ of $SL(r)$. Assume that the integers $a_1+r-1, ~a_2+r-2,..., a_{r-1}+1$ are relatively prime. Then the…
We show that if the principal p-block of a finite group G contains exactly 5 irreducible ordinary characters, then a Sylow p-subgroup of G has order 5, 7 or is isomorphic to one of the non-abelian 2-groups of order 8.
