In the first part of the book, we classify the automorphic representations of {\rm GSp}(2) which are invariant under tensor product with a given quadratic idèle class character, via the lifting of automorphic representations of twisted endoscopic groups. In the second part of the book, we classify the admissible representations of {\rm GSp}(2, k), k a p-adic field, which are invariant under tensor product with a given quadratic character of k^\times. This classification is given in terms of twisted character identities among the admissible representations of {\rm GSp}(2, k) and those of its twisted endoscopic groups. The main tool which we use is the trace formula technique.
In this paper, we compute the conjugacy classes and the list of irreducible characters of GSp(4,q), where q is odd. We also determine precisely which irreducible characters are non-cuspidal and which are generic. These characters are then used to compute dimensions of certain subspaces of fixed vectors of smooth admissible non-supercuspidal representations of GSp(4,F), where F is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero with residue field of order q.
We explicitly compute the adjoint L-function of those L-packets of representations of the group GSp(4) over a p-adic field of characteristic zero that contain non-supercuspidal representations. As an application we verify a conjecture of Gross-Prasad and Rallis in this case. The conjecture states that the adjoint L-function has a pole at s=1 if and only if the L-packet contains a generic representation.
We prove that every irreducible, admissible representation of GSp(4,F), where F is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero, admits a Bessel functional, provided the representation is not one-dimensional. Given such a representation, we explicitly determine the set of all split Bessel functionals admitted by the representation, and prove that these functionals are unique. If the representation is not supercuspidal, or in an L-packet with a non-supercuspidal representation, we explicitly determine the set of all Bessel functionals admitted by the representation, and prove that these…
We obtain explicit formulas for the test vector in the Bessel model and derive the criteria for existence and uniqueness for Bessel models for the unramified, quadratic twists of the Steinberg representation πof GSp(4,F), where F is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. We also give precise criteria for the Iwahori spherical vector in πto be a test vector. We apply the formulas for the test vector to obtain an integral representation of the local L-function of πtwisted by any irreducible, admissible representation of GL(2,F). Together with results in \cite{Fu} and \cite{PS2}, w…
We realize the non-split Bessel model of Novodvorsky and Piatetski-Shapiro as a generalized Gelfand-Graev representation of GSp(4), as suggested by Kawanaka. With uniqueness of the model already established by Novodvorsky and Piatetski-Shapiro, we establish existence of a Bessel model for unramified principal series representations. We then connect the Iwahori-fixed vectors in the Bessel model to a linear character of the Hecke algebra of GSp(4) following the method outlined more generally by Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg. We use this connection to calculate the image of Iwahori-fixed vectors …
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $e_p$ be its irregularity index. If $4e_p+8 <\frac{p-1}{2}$ we construct a Galois representation with image in the diagonal torus of $\op{GSp}_4(\Fp)$ that lifts to a characteristic $0$ representation unramified at all primes $\ell\neq p$ with image containing a finite index subgroup of $\Symp$.
We prove several multiplicity one theorems in this paper. For k a local field not of characteristic two, and V a symplectic space over k, any irreducible admissible representation of the symplectic similitude group GSp(V) decomposes with multiplicity one when restricted to the symplectic group Sp(V). We prove the analogous result for GO(V) and O(V), where V is an orthogonal space over k. When k is non-archimedean, we prove the uniqueness of Fourier-Jacobi models for representations of GSp(4), and the existence of such models for supercuspidal representations of GSp(4).
We find the number $s_k(p,Ω)$ of cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ with trivial central character such that the archimedean component is a holomorphic discrete series representation of weight $k\ge 3$, and the non-archimedean component at $p$ is an Iwahori-spherical representation of type $Ω$ and unramified otherwise. Using the automorphic Plancherel density theorem, we show how a limit version of our formula for $s_k(p,Ω)$ generalizes to the vector-valued case and a finite number of ramified places.
Let $F$ be a vector-valued real analytic Siegel cusp eigenform of weight $(2,1)$ with the eigenvalues $-\frac 5{12}$ and 0 for the two generators of the center of the algebra consisting of all $Sp_4(\R)$-invariant differential operators on the Siegel upper half plane of degree 2. Under the assumptions (1) the validity of the transfer of automorphic representations of $GSp_4$ to $GL_4$; (2) the existence of mod $\ell$ Galois representation attached to $F$ and its lift to characteristic zero; (3) rationality of the space consisting of any such $F$; and (4) the integrality of Hecke polynomials of…
Each orthogonal group $\OO(n)$ has a nontrivial $\GL(1)$-extension, which we call $\GPin(n)$. The identity component of $\GPin(n)$ is the more familiar $\GSpin(n)$, the general Spin group. We prove that the restriction to $\GPin(n-1)$ of an irreducible admissible representation of $\GPin(n)$ over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero is multiplicity free and also prove the analogous theorem for $\GSpin(n)$. Our proof uses the method of Aizenbud, Gourevitch, Rallis and Schiffman, who proved the analogous theorem for $\OO(n)$, and Waldspurger, who proved that for $\SO(n)$. We also …
We prove the expected algebraicity property for the critical values of character twists of the standard $L$-function associated to vector-valued holomorphic Siegel cusp forms of archimedean type $(k_1, k_2, \ldots, k_n)$, where $k_n \geq n+1$ and all $k_i$ are of the same parity. For the proof, we use an explicit integral representation to reduce to arithmetic properties of differential operators on vector-valued nearly holomorphic Siegel cusp forms. We establish these properties via a representation-theoretic approach.
In this paper we obtain realizations of the 4-dimensional general symplectic group over a prime field of characteristic $\ell>3$ as the Galois group of a tamely ramified Galois extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. The strategy is to consider the Galois representation $ρ_{\ell}$ attached to the Tate module at $\ell$ of a suitable abelian surface. We need to choose the abelian varieties carefully in order to ensure that the image of $ρ_{\ell}$ is large and simultaneously maintain a control on the ramification of the corresponding Galois extension. We obtain an explicit family of curves of genus 2 such tha…
Let $p$ be an odd prime, $N$ a square-free odd positive integer prime to $p$, $π$ a $p$-ordinary cohomological irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GSp}_4(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ of principal level $N$ and Iwahori level at $p$. Using a $p$-integral version of Rallis inner product formula and modularity theorems for $\mathrm{GSp}_{4/\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\mathrm{U}_{4/\mathbb{Q}}$, we establish an identity between the $p$-part of the critical value at $1$ of the degree $5$ $L$-function of $π$ twisted by the non-trivial quadratic Dirichlet character $ξ$ associated to the exten…
We construct multiple Dirichlet series in several complex variables whose coefficients involve quadratic residue symbols. The series are shown to have an analytic continuation and satisfy a certain group of functional equations. These are the first examples of an infinite collection of unstable Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series in greater than two variables.
An integral quadratic polynomial (with positive definite quadratic part) is called almost universal if it represents all but finitely many positive integers. In this paper, we provide a characterization of almost universal ternary quadratic polynomials with conductor 2.
We estimate the number of primes represented by a general quadratic polynomial with discriminant $Δ$, assuming that the corresponding real character is exceptional.
Let $Q(x,y,z)$ be an integral quadratic form with determinant coprime to some modulus $q$. We show that $q\mid Q$ for some non-zero integer vector $(x,y,z)$ of length $O(q^{5/8+\varepsilon})$, for any fixed $\varepsilon>0$. Without the coprimality condition on the determinant one could not achieve an exponent below $2/3$. The proof uses a bound for short character sums involving binary quadratic forms, which extends a result of Chang.
The aim of this paper is twofold: on one hand we study the invariants of traces of quadratic forms over a finite field of characteristic two. On the other hand, we give results about the zeta functions of certain curves studied by van der Geer and ven der Vlugt.
We study smoothed character sums involving $\sum_{m,n} ( \frac{m}{n} )_2$, where $( \frac{m}{n} )_2$ denotes the quadratic symbol in the Gaussian field. We extend previously known results to obtain asymptotic formulas for the sums considered to larger ranges of $m$ and $n$.
When p is congruent to 1 mod 8, we have a criterion of the quadratic character of 1+\sqrt{2}, which is related to the class number of \Q(\sqrt{-p}). In this paper, we obtain a similar criterion using an elliptic curve, which contrasts to the proof using algebraic number theory for the old one.
The multi-valued quantum $j$-invariant in positive characteristic is studied at quadratic elements. For every quadratic $f$, an explicit expression for each of the values of $j^{\rm qt}(f)$ is given as a limit of rational functions of $f$. It is proved that the number of values of $j^{\rm qt}(f)$ is finite and that none of these values is $\infty$.

We survey a number of different methods for computing $L(χ,1-k)$ for a Dirichlet character $χ$, with particular emphasis on quadratic characters. The main conclusion is that when $k$ is not too large (for instance $k\le100$) the best method comes from the use of Eisenstein series of half-integral weight, while when $k$ is large the best method is the use of the complete functional equation, unless the conductor of $χ$ is really large, in which case the previous method again prevails.
An algorithm to compute Dirichlet $L$-functions for many quadratic characters is derived. The algorithm is optimal (up to logarithmic factors) provided that the conductors of the characters under consideration span a dyadic window.
Let $\mathcal L^+$ be the set of all primes $p$ for which the sums of $\left(\frac{n}{p}\right)$ over the interval $[1,N]$ are non-negative for all $N$. We prove that the estimate \[ |\mathcal L^+\cap [1,x]|\ll \frac{x}{\ln x(\ln\ln x)^{c-o(1)}} \] holds for $c\approx 0.0368$
