In this paper, we interpret the theta rank of an irreducible character of a finite classical group in terms of the data from the Lusztig classification. Then we prove the following two results: (1) the agreement of the $U$-rank and the theta rank for any irreducible character of low Theta rank; (2) the agreement of the parabolic asymptotic rank and the theta rank for any irreducible character.
It is known that irreducible cuspidal characters satisfy the preservation principle in the Howe correspondences of finite reductive dual pairs. In this article, we generalize the preservation principle to any irreducible characters of classical groups.
For every irreducible Harish-Chandra module of $O^{*}(4)$, we determine its theta lift to $Sp(p,q)$ in terms of the Langlands parameter, for all non-negative integers $p$ and $q$. Our strategy is to determine the desired theta lifts by their infinitesimal characters and lowest $K$-types.
Let $(G,G')$ be a type I irreducible reductive dual pair in $\mathrm{Sp}(W_{\mathbb{R}})$. We assume that $(G,G')$ is in the stable range where $G$ is the smaller member. Let $K$ and $K'$ be maximal compact subgroups of $G$ and $G'$ respectively. Let $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{p}$ and $\mathfrak{g}' = \mathfrak{k}' \oplus \mathfrak{p}'$ be the complexified Cartan decompositions of the Lie algebras of $G$ and $G'$ respectively. Let ${\widetilde{K}}$ and ${\widetilde{K}}'$ be the inverse images of $K$ and $K'$ in the metaplectic double cover $\widetilde{\mathrm{Sp}}(W_\mathbb{…
We determine the occurrence and explicitly describe the theta lifts on all levels of all the irreducible generic representations for the dual pair of groups $(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}, \mathrm{O}(V))$ defined over a local nonarchimedean field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic $0$. As a direct application of our results, we are able to produce a series of non-generic unitarizable representations of these groups.
The theory of almost characters which is closely related to character sheaves is proposed by Lusztig to study the representation theory of finite reductive groups. In this article we show that the decomposition of the Weil character for finite reductive dual pairs $(\Sp_{2n},\rmO^\pm_{2n'})$ or $(\Sp_{2n},\SO_{2n'+1})$ with respect to the almost characters is exactly the same as the decomposition with respect to the irreducible characters. As a consequence, the finite theta correspondence on almost characters is established.
Using a general result of Lusztig, we give explicit formulas for the dimensions of K^F-invariants in irreducible representations of G^F, when G=GL_n, F:G->G is a Frobenius map, and K is an F-stable subgroup of finite index in G^theta for some involution theta:G->G commuting with F. The proofs use some combinatorial facts about characters of symmetric groups.
Let $G$ be a classical group $\GL(n)$, $\oU(n)$, $\oO(n)$ or $\Sp(2n)$, over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. Let $π$ be an irreducible admissible smooth representation of $G$. It is well known that the contragredient of $π$ is isomorphic to a twist of $π$ by an automorphism of $G$. We prove a similar result for double covers of $G$ which occur in the study of local theta correspondences.
In this article, we consider a dual pair $(G, G')$ in the symplectic group $Sp(W)$ with $G$ compact and let $(\tilde{G}, \tilde{G}')$ be the preimages of $G$ and $G'$ in the metaplectic group $\widetilde{Sp(W)}$. For every irreducible representation $Π$ of $\tilde{G}$ appearing in Howe correspondence, we compute explicitly the restriction of the character $Θ_{Π'}$ of the associated representation $Π'$ of $\tilde{G}'$ on the set of regular points on the compact Cartan subgroup $\tilde{H}'$ of $\tilde{G}'$.
We show that if an irreducible admissible representation of $\mathrm{SO}_{4n}(F)$ has a generalized Shalika model, then its small theta lift to $\mathrm{Sp}_{4n}(F)$ has the symplectic linear model, thus answering a question posed by D. Jiang. Here $F$ is a non-archimedean field of characteristic zero.
For an irreducible dual pair $(G, G') \in Sp(W)$ with one member compact and two representations $Π\leftrightarrow Π'$ appearing in the Howe duality, we give an expression of the character $Θ_{Π'}$ of $Π'$ via the character of $Π$. We make computations for the dual pair $(G = U(n, \mathbb{C}), G' = U(p, q, \mathbb{C}))$, which are explicit in low dimensions. For $(G = U(1, \mathbb{C}), G' = U(1, 1, \mathbb{C}))$, we verify directly a result of H. Hecht saying that the character has the same value on both Cartan subgroups of $G'$.
In this paper, we parametrize certain irreducible supercuspidal representations of U(1,1) and U(2) via explicit induction data. The parametrization depends on traceless elements of negative valuation in a quadratic extension of base field. We use the lattice model of the Weil representation to determine which traceless elements are involved in the theta correspondence for reductive dual pair U(1,1) and U(2).
Using the theta correspondence, we extend the classification of irreducible representations of quasi-split unitary groups (the so-called local Langlands correspondence, which was established in an early paper of Mok) to non quasi-split unitary groups. We also prove that our classification satisfies some good properties, which characterize it uniquely. In particular, this provides an alternative approach to the works of Kaletha-Minguez-Shin-White and Moeglin-Renard.
We use recent results of Rolen, Zwegers, and the first author to study characters of irreducible (highest weight) modules for the vertex operator algebra $L_{\frak{sl}_\ell}(-Λ_0)$. We establish asymptotic behaviors of characters for the (ordinary) irreducible $L_{\frak{sl}_\ell}(-Λ_0)$-modules. As a consequence we prove that their quantum dimensions are one, as predicted by representation theory. We also establish a full asymptotic expansion of irreducible characters for $\frak{sl}_3$. Finally, we determine a decomposition formula for the full characters in terms of unary theta and false thet…
Using theta correspondence, we obtain a classification of irreducible representations of an arbitrary even orthogonal group (i.e. the local Langlands correspondence) by deducing it from the local Langlands correspondence for symplectic groups due to Arthur. Moreover,we show that our classifications coincide with the local Langlands correspondence established by Arthur and formulated precisely by Atobe-Gan for quasi-split even orthogonal groups.
We study the Hecke algebra modules arising from theta correspondence between certain Harish-Chandra series for type I dual pairs over finite fields. For the product of the pair of Hecke algebras under consideration, we show that there is a generic Hecke algebra module whose specializations at prime powers give the Hecke algebra modules and whose specialization at $1$ can be explicitly described. As an application, we prove the conservation relation on the first occurrence indices for all irreducible representations. As another application, we generalize the results of Aubert-Michel-Rouquier an…
In this paper we study representations of the indefinite orthogonal group O(n,m) which are local theta lifts of one dimensional characters or unitary lowest weight modules of the double covers of the symplectic groups. We apply the transfer of K-types on these representations of O(n,m), and we study their effects on the dual pair correspondences. These results provide examples that the theta lifting is compatible with the transfer of K-types. Finally we will use these results to study subquotients of some cohomologically induced modules.
We obtain an explicit formula for the mock theta function $Φ^{[m,s]}$ in the case when either $m$ or $s$ is a half of an odd integer by using the coroot lattice of $D(2,1;a)$. This enables us, together with the recurrence formula for $Φ^{[m,s]}$, to know $Φ^{[m,s]}$ for all $m$ and $s$. As its application, we deduce explicit formulas for the character and the supercharacter of N=3 modules obtained from the quantum Hamiltonian reduction of $\hat{osp}(3|2)$-modules.
The classical theta correspondence, based on the Weil representation, allows one to lift automorphic representations on symplectic groups or their double covers to automorphic representations on special orthogonal groups. It is of interest to vary the orthogonal group and describe the behavior in this theta tower (the Rallis tower). In prior work, the authors obtained an extension of the classical theta correspondence to higher degree metaplectic covers of symplectic and special orthogonal groups that is based on the tensor product of the Weil representation with another small representation. …
In this paper we first construct natural filtrations on the full theta lifts for any real reductive dual pairs. We will use these filtrations to calculate the associated cycles and therefore the associated varieties of Harish-Chandra modules of the indefinite orthogonal groups which are theta lifts of unitary lowest weight modules of the metaplectic double covers of the real symplectic groups. We will show that some of these representations are special unipotent and satisfy a K-type formula in a conjecture of Vogan.
In this paper, we will determine the factorization of global period attached to the spherical variety $X:=\mathrm{SO}(n-1)\backslash \mathrm{SO}(n)$, which is a special case of the Sakellaridis-Venkatesh conjecture. The main idea is to build a connection between the periods of $X$ and the periods of the Whittaker case $N,ψ\backslash \mathrm{SL}_2$ (n even) or $N,ψ\backslash \mathrm{Mp}_2$ (n odd) using the tool of theta correspondence. In the local setting, we determine the Plancherel formula of $L^2(X)$, the relative character identities and give an explicite integral formula of transfer betw…
We study model transition for representations occurring in the local theta correspondence between split even special orthogonal groups and symplectic groups, over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero.
A basis for the space of generalized theta functions of level one for the spin groups, parameterized by the theta characteristics (the even theta characteristcs for the odd spin groups) on a curve, is shown to be projectively flat over the moduli space of curves (for Hitchin's connection). The symplectic strange duality conjecture, conjectured by Beauville is shown to hold for all curves of genus at least two, by using Abe's proof of the conjecture for generic curves, and the above monodromy result.
Let G be a finite group, let N be a normal subgroup of G, and let theta in Irr(N) be a G-invariant character. We fix a prime p, and we introduce a canonical partition of Irr(G|theta) relative to p. We call each member B_theta of this partition a theta-block, and to each theta-block B_theta we naturally associate a conjugacy class of p-subgroups of G/N, which we call the theta-defect groups of B_theta. If N is trivial, then the theta-blocks are the Brauer p-blocks. Using theta-blocks, we can unify the Gluck-Wolf-Navarro-Tiep theorem and Brauer's Height Zero conjecture in a single statement, whi…
We give a proof of the Howe duality conjecture for the (almost) equal rank dual pairs in full generality. For arbitrary dual pairs, we prove the irreducibility of the (small) theta lifts for all tempered representations. Our proof works for any nonarchimedean local field of characteristic not 2 and in arbitrary residual characteristic.
We, firstly, improve a theorem of B. Roberts which characterizes non-vanishing of a global theta lift from O(X) to Sp(n) in terms of non-vanishing of local theta lifts. In particular, we will remove all the archimedean conditions imposed upon his theorem. Secondly, following Roberts, we will apply our theorem to theta lifting of low rank similitude groups. Namely we characterize the non-vanishing condition of a global theta lift from GO(4) to GSp(2) in our improved setting. Also we consider non-vanishing conditions of a global theta lift from GO(4) to GSp(1) and explicitly compute the lift whe…
We prove several asymptotic results for partial and false theta functions arising from Jacobi forms, as the modular variable $τ$ tends to $0$ along the imaginary axis, and the elliptic variable $z$ is unrestricted in the complex plane. We observe that these functions exhibit Stokes' phenomenon - the asymptotic behavior of these functions sharply differs depending on where the elliptic variable $z$ is located within the complex plane. We apply our results to study the asymptotic expansions of regularized characters and quantum dimensions of the $(1,p)$-singlet vertex operator algebra coming fro…
We study the theta lifting for real unitary groups and completely determine the theta lifts of discrete series representations. In particular, we show that these theta lifts can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the weakly fair range. This extends a result of J.-S. Li in the case of discrete series representations with sufficiently regular infinitesimal character, whose theta lifts can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the good range.

For Brylinski-Deligne covering groups of an arbitrary split reductive group, we consider theta representations attached to certain exceptional genuine characters. The goal of the paper is to determine when a theta representation has exactly a one-dimensional space of Whittaker functionals, in which case it is called distinguished. For this purpose, we first give effective lower and upper bounds for the dimension of Whittaker functionals for general theta representations. As a consequence, the dimension in many cases can be reduced to simple combinatorial computations, e.g., the Kazhdan-Patters…
Theta representations appear globally as the residues of Eisenstein series on covers of groups; their unramified local constituents may be characterized as subquotients of certain principal series. A cuspidal theta representation is one which is equal to the local twisted theta representation at almost all places. Cuspidal theta representations are known to exist but only for covers of $GL_j$, $j\leq 3$. In this paper we establish necessary conditions for the existence of cuspidal theta representations on the $r$-fold metaplectic cover of the general linear group of arbitrary rank.
We evaluate characters of irreducible representations of the N=2 supersymmetric extension of the Virasoro algebra. We do so by deriving the BGG-resolution of the admissible N=2 representations and also a new 3,5,7...-resolution in terms of twisted massive Verma modules. We analyse how the characters behave under the automorphisms of the algebra, whose most significant part is the spectral flow transformations. The possibility to express the characters in terms of theta functions is determined by their behaviour under the spectral flow. We also derive the identity expressing every $\hat{sl}(2)$…
