The Gardner method, traditionally used to generate conservation laws of integrable equations, is generalized to generate symmetries. The method is demonstrated for the KdV, Camassa-Holm and Sine-Gordon equations. The method involves identifying a symmetry which depends upon a parameter; expansion of this symmetry in a (formal) power series in the parameter then gives the usual infinite hierarchy of symmetries. We show that the obtained symmetries commute, discuss the relation of the Gardner method with Lenard recursion (both for generating symmetries and conservation laws), and also the connection between the symmetries of continuous integrable equations and their discrete analogs.
The application of the Gardner method for generation of conservation laws to all the ABS equations is considered. It is shown that all the necessary information for the application of the Gardner method, namely Bäcklund transformations and initial conservation laws, follow from the multidimensional consistency of ABS equations. We also apply the Gardner method to an asymmetric equation which is not included in the ABS classification. An analog of the Gardner method for generation of symmetries is developed and applied to discrete KdV. It can also be applied to all the other ABS equations.
In this paper, a variable-coefficient Gardner equation is considered. By using the classical symmetry analysis method symmetries for this equation are obtained. Then, the generalized Jacobi elliptic function expansion method is used to solve the reduced ODE. Some new exact solutions for the considered PDE are obtained.
In \cite{RH3} Rasin and Hydon suggested a way to construct an infinite number of conservation laws for the discrete KdV equation (dKdV), by repeated application of a certain symmetry to a known conservation law. It was not decided, however, whether the resulting conservation laws were distinct and nontrivial. In this paper we obtain the following results: (1) We give an alternative method to construct an infinite number of conservation laws using a discrete version of the Gardner transformation. (2) We give a direct proof that the Rasin-Hydon conservation laws are indeed distinct and nontrivia…
A method for symbolically computing conservation laws of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) in multiple space dimensions is presented in the language of variational calculus and linear algebra. The steps of the method are illustrated using the Zakharov-Kuznetsov and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations as examples. The method is algorithmic and has been implemented in Mathematica. The software package, ConservationLawsMD.m, can be used to symbolically compute and test conservation laws for polynomial PDEs that can be written as nonlinear evolution equations. The code ConservationLawsM…
We classify the Lie symmetries of variable coefficient Gardner equations (called also the combined KdV-mKdV equations). In contrast to the particular results presented in Molati and Ramollo (2012) we perform the exhaustive group classification. It is shown that the complete result can be achieved using either the gauging of arbitrary elements of class by the equivalence transformations or the method of mapping between classes. As by-product of the second approach the complete group classification of a class of variable coefficient mKdV equations with forcing term is derived. Advantages of the …
We discuss nonlocal symmetries and nonlocal conservation laws that follow from the systematic potentialisation of evolution equations. Those are the Lie point symmetries of the auxiliary systems, also known as potential symmetries. We define higher-degree potential symmetries which then lead to nonlocal conservation laws and nonlocal transformations for the equations. We demonstrate our approach by the Burgers' hierarchy and the Calogero-Degasperis-Ibragimov-Shabat hierarchy.
Infinitely many nonlocal symmetries and conservation laws of the (1+1)-dimensional Sine-Gordon (SG) equation are derived in terms of its Bäcklund transformation (BT). Some special nonlocal symmetries and nonlocal conservation laws are obtained from the linearized equations of the SG equation and its BT. Furthermore, one can derive infinitely many nonlocal symmetries from a known nonlocal symmetry, but also infinitely many nonlocal conservation laws from a known nonlocal conservation law. In addition, infinitely many local and nonlocal conservation laws can be directed generated from BT through…
Sequences of canonical conservation laws and generalized symmetries for the lattice Boussinesq and the lattice modified Boussinesq systems are successively derived. The interpretation of these symmetries as differential-difference equations leads to corresponding hierarchies of such equations for which conservation laws and Lax pairs are constructed. Finally, using the continuous symmetry reduction approach, an integrable, multidimensionally consistent system of partial differential equations is derived in relation with the lattice modified Boussinesq system.
The hierarchy of the integrable nonlinear equations associated with the quadratic bundle is considered. The expressions for the solution of the linearization of these equations and their conservation law in the terms of the solutions of the corresponding Lax pairs are found. It is shown for the first member of the hierarchy that the conservation law is connected with the solution of the linearized equation due to the Noether's theorem. The local hierarchy and three nonlocal ones of the infinitesimal symmetries and the conservation laws that are explicitly expressed through the variables of the…
We study the Veronese web equation $u_y u_{tx}+ λu_xu_{ty} - (λ+1)u_tu_{xy} =0$ and using its isospectral Lax pair construct two infinite series of nonlocal conservation laws. In the infinite differential coverings associated to these series, we describe the Lie algebras of the corresponding nonlocal symmetries. Finally, we construct a recursion operator and explore its action on nonlocal shadows. The operator provides a new shadow which serves as a master-symmetry.
In 2003, A.J. Majda and J.A. Biello derived and studied the so-called reduced equations for equatorial baroclinic-barotropic waves, to which we refer as to the Majda-Biello system. The equations in question describe the nonlinear interaction of long-wavelength equatorial Rossby waves and barotropic Rossby waves with a significant midlatitude projection in the presence of suitable horizontally and vertically sheared zonal mean flows. Below we present a Hamiltonian structure for Majda-Biello system and describe all generalized symmetries and conservation laws for the latter. It turns out that th…
The technique of Darboux transformation is applied to nonlocal partner of two-dimensional periodic A_{n-1} Toda lattice. This system is shown to admit a representation as the compatibility conditions of direct and dual overdetermined linear systems with quantized spectral parameter. The generalization of the Darboux transformation technique on linear equations of such a kind is given. The connections between the solutions of overdetermined linear systems and their expansions in series at singular points neighborhood are presented. The solutions of the nonlocal Toda lattice and infinite hierarc…
Comment on "An optimal system, invariant solutions, conservation laws, and complete classification of Lie group symmetries for a generalized (2+1)-dim. Davey-Stewartson system of equations for the wave propagation in water of finite depth"
Through a reciprocal transformation $\mathcal{T}_0$ induced by the conservation law $\partial_t(u_x^2) = \partial_x(2uu_x^2)$, the Hunter-Saxton (HS) equation $u_{xt} = 2uu_{2x} + u_x^2$ is shown to possess conserved densities involving arbitrary smooth functions, which have their roots in infinitesimal symmetries of $w_t = w^2$, the counterpart of the HS equation under $\mathcal{T}_0$. Hierarchies of commuting symmetries of the HS equation are studied under appropriate changes of variables initiated by $\mathcal{T}_0$, and two of these are linearized while the other is identical to the hierar…
We derive a method for finding Lie Symmetries for third-order difference equations. We use these symmetries to reduce the order of the difference equations and hence obtain the solutions of some third-order difference equations. We also introduce a technique for obtaining their first integrals.
Integrability conditions for difference equations admitting a second order formal recursion operator are presented and the derivation of symmetries and canonical conservation laws is discussed. In the generic case, nonlocal conservation laws are also generated. A new integrable equation satisfying the second order integrability conditions is presented and its integrability is established by the construction of symmetries, conservation laws and a 3x3 Lax representation. Finally, the relation of the symmetries of this equation to a generalized Bogoyavlensky lattice and a new integrable lattice a…
We determine, by hierarchy, dependencies between higher order linear symmetries which occur when generating them using recursion operators. Thus, we deduce a formula which gives the number of independent generalized symmetries (basis) of several orders. We construct a basis for conservation laws (with respect to the group admitted by the system of differential equation) and hence generate infinite conservation laws in each equivalence class.
A method of the formal diagonalization of the discrete linear operator with a parameter is studied. In the case when the operator provides a Lax operator for a nonlinear quad system the formal diagonalization method allows one to describe effectively conservation laws and generalized symmetries for this system. Asymptotic representation of the Lax operators eigenfunctions are constructed and infinite series of conservation laws are described for the quad system connected with $A^{(1)}_3$ affine Lie algebra, for the modified discrete Boussinesq system and for the discrete Tzitzeica equation. Fo…
Conservation laws are formulated for systems of differential equations by using symmetries and adjoint symmetries, and an application to systems of evolution equations is made, together with illustrative examples. The formulation does not require the existence of a Lagrangian for a given system, and the presented examples include computations of conserved densities for the heat equation, Burgers' equation and the Korteweg-de Vries equation.
An alternative method of constructing the formal diagonalization for the discrete Lax operators is proposed which can be used to calculate conservation laws and in some cases generalized symmetries for discrete dynamical systems. Discrete potential KdV equation, lattice derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, dressing chain, Toda lattice are considered as illustrative examples. For the Toda lattice on a quad graph corresponding to the Lie algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ infinite series of conservation laws are described. Systems of quad graph equations are represented including lattice versions of the …
We provide a complete classification of generalized and formal symmetries and local conservation laws for an evolution equation which generalizes the Kawahara equation having important applications in the study of plasma waves and capillary-gravity water waves. In particular, we show that the equation under study admits no genuinely generalized symmetries and has only finitely many local conservation laws, and thus this equation is not symmetry integrable.
A conservation law theorem stated by N. Ibragimov along with its subsequent extensions are shown to be a special case of a standard formula that uses a pair consisting of a symmetry and an adjoint-symmetry to produce a conservation law through a well-known Fréchet derivative identity. Also, the connection of this formula (and of Ibragimov's theorem) to the standard action of symmetries on conservation laws is explained, which accounts for a number of major drawbacks that have appeared in recent work using the formula to generate conservation laws. In particular, the formula can generate trivia…
We present an infinite series of autonomous discrete equations on the square lattice possessing hierarchies of autonomous generalized symmetries and conservation laws in both directions. Their orders in both directions are equal to $κN$, where $κ$ is an arbitrary natural number and $N$ is equation number in the series. Such a structure of hierarchies is new for discrete equations in the case $N>2$. Symmetries and conservation laws are constructed by means of the master symmetries. Those master symmetries are found in a direct way together with generalized symmetries. Such construction scheme s…
This paper presents recent work on connections between symmetries and conservation laws. After reviewing Noether's theorem and its limitations, we present the Direct Construction Method to show how to find directly the conservation laws for any given system of differential equations. This method yields the multipliers for conservation laws as well as an integral formula for corresponding conserved densities. The action of a symmetry (discrete or continuous) on a conservation law yields conservation laws. Conservation laws yield non-locally related systems that, in turn, can yield nonlocal symm…
Two-component second and third-order Burgers type systems with nondiagonal constant matrix of leading order terms are classified for higher symmetries. New symmetry integrable systems with their master symmetries are obtained. Some third order systems are observed to possess conservation laws. Bi-Poisson structures of systems possessing conservation laws are given.
Using the lax pair, nonlocal symmetry of the coupled Hirota equation is obtained. By introducing an appropriate auxiliary dependent variable the nonlocal symmetry is successfully localized to a Lie point symmetry. For the closed prolongation, one-dimensional optimal systems and nonlocal conservation laws of the coupled Hirota equation are studied.
We show that the so-called hidden potential symmetries considered in a recent paper [Gandarias M., Physica A, 2008, V.387, 2234-2242] are ordinary potential symmetries that can be obtained using the method introduced by Bluman and collaborators. In fact, these are simplest potential symmetries associated with potential systems which are constructed with single conservation laws having no constant characteristics. Furthermore we classify the conservation laws for classes of porous medium equations and then using the corresponding conserved (potential) systems we search for potential symmetries.…
The generalized Kawahara equation $u_t=a(t) u_{xxxxx} +b(t)u_{xxx} +c(t)f(u) u_x$ appears in many physical applications. A complete classification of low-order conservation laws and point symmetries is obtained for this equation, which includes as a special case the usual Kawahara equation $u_t = αu u_x+βu^2u_x +γu_{xxx}+μu_{xxxxx}$. A general connection between conservation laws and symmetries for the generalized Kawahara equation is derived through the Hamiltonian structure of this equation and its relationship to Noether's theorem using a potential formulation.
In this paper, we highlight the complimentary nature of the results of Anco & Bluman and Ibragimov in the construction of conservation laws; that whilst the former establishes the role of multipliers, the latter presents a formal procedure to determine the flows. Secondly, we show that there is an underlying relationship between the symmetries and conservation laws in a general setting - extending the results of Kara & Mahomed. The results take apparently differently forms for point symmetry generators and higher-order symmetries. Similarities exist, to some extent, with a previously establish…
We study the hydrodynamic-type system of differential equations modeling isothermal no-slip drift flux. Using the facts that the system is partially coupled and its subsystem reduces to the (1+1)-dimensional Klein--Gordon equation, we exhaustively describe generalized symmetries, cosymmetries and local conservation laws of this system. A generating set of local conservation laws under the action of generalized symmetries is proved to consist of two zeroth-order conservation laws. The subspace of translation-invariant conservation laws is singled out from the entire space of local conservation …
We describe an infinite-dimensional algebra of hidden symmetries for the self-dual gravity equations. Besides the known diffeomorphism-type symmetries (affine extension of w(infinity) algebra), this algebra contains new hidden symmetries, which are an affine extension of the Lorentz rotations. The full symmetry algebra has both Kac-Moody and Virasoro-like generators, whose exponentiation maps solutions of the field equations to other solutions. Relations to problems of string theories are briefly discussed.
Nonlinear generalizations of integrable equations in one dimension, such as the KdV and Boussinesq equations with $p$-power nonlinearities, arise in many physical applications and are interesting in analysis due to critical behaviour. This paper studies analogous nonlinear $p$-power generalizations of the integrable KP equation and the Boussinesq equation in two dimensions. Several results are obtained. First, for all $p\neq 0$, a Hamiltonian formulation of both generalized equations is given. Second, all Lie symmetries are derived, including any that exist for special powers $p\neq0$. Third, …
Algorithms for the symbolic computation of polynomial conservation laws, generalized symmetries, and recursion operators for systems of nonlinear differential-difference equations (DDEs) are presented. The algorithms can be used to test the complete integrability of nonlinear DDEs. The ubiquitous Toda lattice illustrates the steps of the algorithms, which have been implemented in {\em Mathematica}. The codes {\sc InvariantsSymmetries.m} and {\sc DDERecursionOperator.m} can aid researchers interested in properties of nonlinear DDEs.
A computational classification of contact symmetries and higher-order local symmetries that do not commute with $t,x$, as well as local conserved densities that are not invariant under $t,x$ is carried out for a generalized version of the Krichever-Novikov equation. Several new results are obtained. First, the Krichever-Novikov equation is explicitly shown to have a local conserved density that contains $t,x$. Second, apart from the dilational point symmetries known for special cases of the Krichever-Novikov equation and its generalized version, no other local symmetries with low differential …
We construct new integrable coupled systems of N=1 supersymmetric equations and present integrable fermionic extensions of the Burgers and Boussinesq equations. Existence of infinitely many higher symmetries is demonstrated by the presence of recursion operators. Various algebraic methods are applied to the analysis of symmetries, conservation laws, recursion operators, and Hamiltonian structures. A fermionic extension of the Burgers equation is related with the Burgers flows on associative algebras. A Gardner's deformation is found for the bosonic super-field dispersionless Boussinesq equatio…

In this paper, we construct and analyse the symmetries and conservation laws (conserved densities) of a model of a nonlinear Scrodinger equation with PT-symmetric potentials and inhomogeneity.
In this paper, the nonlinear Rosenau-Hyman equation with time dependent variable coefficients is considered for investigating its invariant properties, exact solutions and conservation laws. Using Lie classical method, we derive symmetries admitted by considered equation. Symmetry reductions are performed for each components of optimal set. Also nonclassical approach is employed on considered equation to find some additional supplementary symmetries and corresponding symmetry reductions are performed. Later three kinds of exact solutions of considered equation are presented graphically for dif…
We discuss the dispersionless Boussinesq type equation, which is equivalent to the Benney-Lax equation, being a system of equations of hydrodynamical type. This equation was discussed in <http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.1088/0305-4470/27/1/013>. The results include: a description of local and nonlocal Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, hierarchies of symmetries, hierarchies of conservation laws, recursion operators for symmetries and generating functions of conservation laws (cosymmetries). Highly interesting are the appearances of operators that send conservation laws and symmetries to each othe…
We find noncommutative analogs for well-known polynomial evolution systems with higher conservation laws and symmetries. The integrability of obtained non-Abelian systems is justified by explicit zero curvature representations with spectral parameter.
