Conservation laws are formulated for systems of differential equations by using symmetries and adjoint symmetries, and an application to systems of evolution equations is made, together with illustrative examples. The formulation does not require the existence of a Lagrangian for a given system, and the presented examples include computations of conserved densities for the heat equation, Burgers' equation and the Korteweg-de Vries equation.
Nonlinear self-adjointness method for constructing conservation laws of partial differential equations (PDEs) is further studied. We show that any adjoint symmetry of PDEs is a differential substitution of nonlinear self-adjointness and vice versa. Consequently, each symmetry of PDEs corresponds to a conservation law via a formula if the system of PDEs is nonlinearly self-adjoint with differential substitution. As a byproduct, we find that the set of differential substitutions includes the set of conservation law multipliers as a subset. The results are illustrated by three typical examples.
A conservation law theorem stated by N. Ibragimov along with its subsequent extensions are shown to be a special case of a standard formula that uses a pair consisting of a symmetry and an adjoint-symmetry to produce a conservation law through a well-known Fréchet derivative identity. This paper presents recent work on connections between symmetries and conservation laws. After reviewing Noether's theorem and its limitations, we present the Direct Construction Method to show how to find directly the conservation laws for any given system of differential equations. This method yields the multipliers for conservation laws as well as an integral formula for corresponding conserved densities. All three-point and five-point conservation laws for the discrete Korteweg-de Vries equations are found. These conservation laws satisfy a functional equation, which we solve by reducing it to a system of partial differential equations. Our method uses computer algebra intensively, because the determining functional equation is quite complicated.
We study local conservation laws for evolution equations in two independent variables. In particular, we present normal forms for the equations admitting one or two low-order conservation laws. Examples include Harry Dym equation, Korteweg-de-Vries-type equations, and Schwarzian KdV equation. It is also shown that for linear evolution equations all their conservation laws are (modulo trivial conserved vectors) at most quadratic in the dependent variable and its derivatives.
For the hyperbolic system of quasilinear first-order partial differential equations, linearizable by hodograph transformation, the conservation laws are used to solve the Cauchy problem. The equivalence of the initial problem for quasilinear system and the problem for conservation laws system permits to construct the characteristic lines in domains, where Jacobian of hodograph transformations is equal to zero. Moreover, the conservation laws give all solutions of the linearized system. Some examples from the gas dynamics and theory of plasticity are considered.

We study the hydrodynamic-type system of differential equations modeling isothermal no-slip drift flux. Using the facts that the system is partially coupled and its subsystem reduces to the (1+1)-dimensional Klein--Gordon equation, we exhaustively describe generalized symmetries, cosymmetries and local conservation laws of this system. In this paper we introduce a new property of two-dimensional integrable systems -- existence of infinitely many local three-dimensional conservation laws for pairs of integrable two-dimensional commuting flows. By the Cole-Hopf transformation, with any linear evolution equation in 1+1 dimensions a generalized Burgers equation is associated. We describe local conservation laws of these equations. It turns out that any generalized Burgers equation has only one conservation law, while a linear evolution equation with constant coefficients has an infinite number of (x,t)-independent conservation laws iff the equation involves only odd order terms and, therefore, is bi-Hamiltonian.
New approach to classification of integrable hydrodynamic chains is established. Generating functions of conservation laws are classified by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. N parametric family of explicit hydrodynamic reductions allows to reconstruct corresponding hydrodynamic chains. Plenty new hydrodynamic chains are found.
We discuss nonlocal symmetries and nonlocal conservation laws that follow from the systematic potentialisation of evolution equations. Those are the Lie point symmetries of the auxiliary systems, also known as potential symmetries. We define higher-degree potential symmetries which then lead to nonlocal conservation laws and nonlocal transformations for the equations. We demonstrate our approach by the Burgers' hierarchy and the Calogero-Degasperis-Ibragimov-Shabat hierarchy.
In the paper we derive infinitely many conservation laws for the ABS lattice equations from their Lax pairs. These conservation laws can algebraically be expressed by means of some known polynomials. We also show that H1, H2, H3, Q1, Q2, Q3 and A1 equation in ABS list share a generic discrete Riccati equation.
Sequences of canonical conservation laws and generalized symmetries for the lattice Boussinesq and the lattice modified Boussinesq systems are successively derived. The interpretation of these symmetries as differential-difference equations leads to corresponding hierarchies of such equations for which conservation laws and Lax pairs are constructed. Finally, using the continuous symmetry reduction approach, an integrable, multidimensionally consistent system of partial differential equations is derived in relation with the lattice modified Boussinesq system.
We consider two discrete completely integrable evolutions: the Toda Lattice and the Ablowitz-Ladik system. The principal thrust of the paper is the development of microscopic conservation laws that witness the conservation of the perturbation determinant under these dynamics. In this way, we obtain discrete analogues of objects that we found essential in our recent analyses of KdV, NLS, and mKdV. In concert with this, we revisit the classical topic of microscopic conservation laws attendant to the (renormalized) trace of the Green's function.
We determine, by hierarchy, dependencies between higher order linear symmetries which occur when generating them using recursion operators. Thus, we deduce a formula which gives the number of independent generalized symmetries (basis) of several orders. We construct a basis for conservation laws (with respect to the group admitted by the system of differential equation) and hence generate infinite conservation laws in each equivalence class.
A method based on infinite parameter conservation laws is described to factor linear differential operators out of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) or out of differential consequences of nonlinear PDEs. This includes a complete linearization to an equivalent linear PDE (-system) if that is possible. Infinite parameter conservation laws can be computed, for example, with the computer algebra package ConLaw.
