We construct a new minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$, $K^2=2$ and $H_1=\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$ (in fact $π_1^{\text{alg}}=\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$), which settles the existence question for numerical Campedelli surfaces with all possible algebraic fundamental groups. The main techniques involved in the construction are a rational blow-down surgery and a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing theory.
We construct a minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$, $K^2 =4$, and $π_1=\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ using a rational blow-down surgery and a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing theory. In a similar fashion, we also construct a symplectic 4-manifold with $b_2^+=1$, $K^2=5$, and $π_1=\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$.
Using the global Gulliksen-Negård complex, we build in this note regular canonical surfaces of general type in ${\mathbb P}^6$, Calabi-Yau 3-folds in ${\mathbb P}^7$ and Fano anticanonical 4-folds, all of degree 17 and 20. We also give their Hodge number and syzygies.
In this paper, we study $\mathbb{A}^1$ curves on log K3 surfaces. We classify all genuine log K3 surfaces of type II which admits countably infinite $\mathbb{A}^1$ curves.
This is the final paper in a series of four, concerning the surface $T \times T$ embedded in $\mathbb{CP}^8$, where $T$ is a the one dimensional torus. In this paper we compute the fundamental group of the Galois cover of the surface with respect to a generic projection onto $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and show that it is nilpotent of class 3. This is the first time such a group is presented as the fundamental group of a Galois cover of a surface.
We give a general structure theorem for affine A 1-fibrations on smooth quasi-projective surfaces. As an application, we show that every smooth A 1-fibered affine surface non-isomorphic to the total space of a line bundle over a smooth affine curve fails the Zariski Cancellation Problem. The present note is an expanded version of a talk given at the Kinosaki Algebraic Geometry Symposium in October 2019.
We investigate the problem of existence of degenerations of surfaces in $\mathbb P^3$ with ordinary singularities into plane arrangements in general position.
We investigate exceptional sheaves on the Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{F}_2$, as the first attempt toward the classification of exceptional objects on weak del Pezzo surfaces.
We compute equations for Coughlan's family of Godeaux surfaces with torsion $\mathbb Z/2$, which we call $\mathbb Z/2$-Godeaux surfaces, and we show that it is (at most) 7 dimensional. We classify non-rational KSBA degenerations $W$ of $\mathbb Z/2$-Godeaux surfaces with one Wahl singularity, showing that $W$ is birational to particular either Enriques surfaces, or $D_{2,n}$ elliptic surfaces, with $n=3,4$ or $6$. We present examples for all possibilities in the first case, and for $n=3,4$ in the second.
We construct the first exotic $\mathbb C \mathbb P^2 \# 4 \overline{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}$ by means of rational blowdowns. Similarly, we construct the first exotic $3\mathbb C \mathbb P^2 \# b^- \overline{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}$ for $b^-=9,8,7$ . All of them are minimal and symplectic, as they are produced from projective surfaces $W$ with Wahl singularities, and $K_W$ big and nef. In more generality, we elaborate on the problem of finding exotic $(2χ(\mathcal{O}_W)-1) \mathbb C \mathbb P^2 \# (10χ(\mathcal{O}_W)-K^2_W-1) \overline{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}$ from these Kollár--Shepherd-Barron--A…
Minimal algebraic surfaces of general type $X$ such that $K^2_X=2χ(\mathcal{O}_X)-6$ or $K^2_X=2χ(\mathcal{O}_X)-5$ are called Horikawa surfaces. In this note we study $\mathbb{Z}^2_2$-actions on Horikawa surfaces. The main result is that all the connected components of Gieseker's moduli space of canonical models of surfaces of general type with invariants satisfying these relations contain surfaces with $\mathbb{Z}^2_2$-actions.
A link at the origin of an isolated singularity of a two-dimensional semialgebraic surface in $\mathbb{R}^4$ is a topological knot (or link) in $S^3$. We study the connection between the ambient Lipschitz geometry of semialgebraic surface germs in $\mathbb{R}^4$ and the knot theory. Namely, for any knot $K$, we construct a surface $X_K$ in $\mathbb{R}^4$ such that: the link at the origin of $X_{K}$ is a trivial knot; the germs $X_K$ are outer bi-Lipschitz equivalent for all $K$; two germs $X_{K}$ and $X_{K'}$ are ambient bi-Lipschitz equivalent only if the knots $K$ and $K'$ are isotopic. We s…
P. Stiller computed the Picard numbers of several families of elliptic surfaces, the rank of the Néron-Severi groups of these surfaces. However he did not give the generators of these groups. In this paper we give $\mathbb Q$-bases of these groups explicitly. If these surfaces are rational, then we also show that they are $\mathbb Z$-bases.
We prove that a curve of degree $dk$ on a very general surface of degree $d \geq 5$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$ has geometric genus at least $\frac{dk(d-5)+k}{2} + 1$. This improves bounds given by G. Xu. As a corollary, we conclude that the very general quintic surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ is algebraically hyperbolic.
In this paper, we study $\mathbb{A}^1$-equivalence classes of zero cycles on open complex algebraic surfaces. We prove the logarithmic version of Mumford's theorem on zero cycles and prove that log Bloch's conjecture holds for quasiprojective surfaces with log Kodaira dimension $-\infty$.
In this note we prove that if $S$ is an affine non-toric $\mathbb{G}_m$-surface of hyperbolic type that admits a $\mathbb{G}_a$-action and $X$ is an affine irreducible variety such that $Aut(X)$ is isomorphic to $Aut(S)$ as an abstract group, then $X$ is a $\mathbb{G}_m$-surface of hyperbolic type. Further, we show that a smooth Danielewski surface $Dp = \{ xy = p(z) \} \subset \mathbb{A}^3$, where $p$ has no multiple roots, is determined by its automorphism group seen as an ind-group in the category of affine irreducible varieties.
Since the work of Ellingsrud and Peskine at the end of 1980s, it has been known that, with the exception of a finite number of families, smooth compact complex surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$ with prescribed Chern classes must lie on hypersurfaces of degree $m\leq 5$. The study of surfaces lying on a small degree hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^4$---small meaning $\leq5$---seems to be a way of obtaining empirical data leading to a better conceptual understanding of surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$. From this perspective, two main issues are considered in the paper: - an analogue of the Hartshorne-Lichtenbaum…
We consider a surface that admits a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein degeneration to a cyclic quotient singularity $\frac{1}{dn^2}(1,dna-1)$. Under several technical assumptions, we construct $d$ exceptional vector bundles of rank $n$ which are orthogonal to each other.
We consider the deformation spaces of some singular product-quotient surfaces $X=(C_1 \times C_2)/G$, where the curves $C_i$ have genus 3 and the group $G$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_4$. As a by-product, we give a new construction of Todorov surfaces with $p_g=1$, $q=0$ and $2\le K^2\le 8$ by using $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothings.
We study smooth quadric surfaces in the Pfaffian hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{14}$ parameterising $6 \times 6$ skew-symmetric matrices of rank at most 4, not intersecting the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(1,5)$. Such surfaces correspond to quadratic systems of skew-symmetric matrices of size 6 and constant rank 4, and give rise to a globally generated vector bundle $E$ on the quadric. We analyse these bundles and their geometry, relating them to linear congruences of lines in $\mathbb{P}^5$.
Recently, Haase and Ilten initiated the study of classifying algebraically hyperbolic surfaces in toric threefolds. We complete this classification for $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, $\mathbb{P}^2 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, $\mathbb{F}_e \times \mathbb{P}^1$ and the blowup of $\mathbb{P}^3$ at a point, augmenting our earlier work on $\mathbb{P}^3$. In the process, we codify several different techniques for proving algebraic hyperbolicity, allowing us to prove similar results for hypersurface in any variety admitting a group action with dense orbit.
For each finite primitive subgroup $G$ of $\operatorname{PGL}_4(\mathbb{C})$, we find all the smooth $G$-invariant quartic surfaces. We also find all the faithful representations in $\operatorname{PGL}_4(\mathbb{C})$ of the smooth quartic $G$-invariant surfaces by the groups: $\mathfrak{A}_5,\mathfrak{S}_5, \operatorname{PSL_2(\mathbb{F}_7)},\mathfrak{A}_6,\mathbb{Z}_2^4\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_5$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2^4\rtimes D_{10}$. The primitive representation of these groups are precisely the subgroups of $\operatorname{PGL}_4(\mathbb{C})$ for which $\mathbb{P}^3$ is not $G$-super rigid. As a bypro…
In this paper we give an upper bound on the number of rational points on an irreducible curve $C$ of degree $δ$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ lying on a Frobenius classical surface $S$ embedded in $\mathbb{P}^3$. This leads us to investigate arithmetic properties of curves lying on surfaces. In a certain range of $δ$ and $q$, our result improves all other known bounds in the context of space curves.
We study the behavior of the bilinkage process in codimension $3$. In particular, we construct a smooth canonically embedded and linearly normal surface of general type of degree $18$ in $\mathbb{P}^5$, this is probably the highest degree such surface may have. Next, we apply our construction to find a geometric description of Tonoli Calabi--Yau threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^6$.
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group which acts symplectically on a K3 surface. The Néron-Severi lattice of the projective K3 surfaces admitting $G$ symplectic action and with minimal Picard number is computed by Garbagnati and Sarti. We consider a $4$-dimensional family of projective K3 surfaces with $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$ symplectic action which do not fall in the above cases. If $X$ is one of these K3 surfaces, then it arises as the minimal resolution of a specific $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$-cover of $\mathbb{P}^2$ branched along six general lines. We show that the Néron-Severi lattice of $X$ with minimal Pic…
In this paper, we compute the E-polynomials of the $PGL(2,\mathbb{C})$-character varieties associated to surfaces of genus $g$ with one puncture, for any holonomy around it, and compare it with its Langlands dual case, $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$. The study is based on the stratification of the space of representations and on the analysis of the behaviour of the E-polynomial under fibrations.
The goal of this paper is to construct a compactification of the moduli space of degree $d \ge 5$ surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$, i.e. a parameter space whose interior points correspond to (equivalence classes of) smooth surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ and whose boundary points correspond to degenerations of such surfaces. We study a more general problem and consider a divisor $D$ on a Fano variety $Z$ as a pair $(Z, D)$ satisfying certain properties. We find a modular compactification of such pairs and, in the case of $Z = \mathbb{P}^3$ and $D$ a surface, use their properties to classify the pairs on …
In this note the geography of minimal surfaces of general type admitting $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-actions is studied. More precisely, it is shown that Gieseker's moduli space $\mathfrak{M}_{K^2,χ}$ contains surfaces admitting a $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-action for every admissible pair $(K^2, χ)$ such that $2χ-6\leq K^2\leq 8χ-8$ or $K^2=8χ$. The examples considered allow to prove that the locus of Gorenstein stable surfaces is not closed in the KSBA-compactification $\overline{\mathfrak{M}}_{K^2,χ}$ of Gieseker's moduli space $\mathfrak{M}_{K^2,χ}$ for every admissible pair $(K^2, χ)$ such that $2χ-6\leq K^2\…
Using recent developments in the theory of mixed motives, we prove that the log Bloch conjecture holds for an open smooth complex surface if the Bloch conjecture holds for its compactification. This verifies the log Bloch conjecture for all $\mathbb{Q}$-homology planes and for open smooth surfaces which are not of log general type.
In this article we study congruences of lines in $\mathbb{P}^n$, and in particular of order one. After giving general results, we obtain a complete classification in the case of $\mathbb{P}^4$ in which the fundamental surface $F$ is in fact a variety-i.e. it is integral-and the congruence is the irreducible set of the trisecant lines of $F$.
We prove new local inequality for divisors on surfaces and utilize it to compute $α$-invariants of singular del Pezzo surfaces, which implies that del Pezzo surfaces of degree one whose singular points are of type $\mathbb{A}_{1}$, $\mathbb{A}_{2}$, $\mathbb{A}_{3}$, $\mathbb{A}_{4}$, $\mathbb{A}_{5}$ or $\mathbb{A}_{6}$ are Kähler-Einstein.
In this text, we study Viro's conjecture and related problems for real algebraic surfaces in $(\mathbb{CP}^1)^3$. We construct a counter-example to Viro's conjecture in tridegree $(4,4,2)$ and a family of real algebraic surfaces of tridegree $(2k,2l,2)$ in $(\mathbb{CP}^1)^3$ with asymptotically maximal first Betti number of the real part. To perform such constructions, we consider double covers of blow-ups of $(\mathbb{CP}^1)^2$ and we glue singular curves with special position of the singularities adapting the proof of Shustin's theorem for gluing singular hypersurfaces.
We prove that several invariants of a possibly singular complex affine or projective variety of degree $d$ in the affine space $\mathbb{A}^{n}$, or $\mathbb{P}^n$, are bounded by a function of $d$ alone, provided $b_{1}=0$ for a resolution of singularities of the variety.
In this paper we study birational immersions from a very general smooth plane curve to a non-rational surface with $p_g=q=0$ to treat dominant rational maps from a very general surface $X$ of degree$\geq 5$ in ${\mathbb P}^3$ to smooth projective surfaces $Y$. Based on the classification theory of algebraic surfaces, Hodge theory, and deformation theory, we prove that there is no dominant rational map from $X$ to $Y$ unless $Y$ is rational or $Y$ is birational to $X$.
Let $X \subset \mathbb P^3$ be a smooth hypersurface of degree $6$ over complex numbers. In this paper, we give a characterization of initialized and ACM bundles of rank $1$ on $X$ with respect to the line bundle given by a smooth hyperplane section of $X$.
Surfaces of general type with geometric genus $p_g=0$, which can be given as Galois covering of the projective plane branched over an arrangement of lines with Galois group $G=(\mathbb Z/q\mathbb Z)^k$, where $k\geq 2$ and $q$ is a prime number, are investigated. The classical Godeaux surface, Campedelli surfaces, Burniat surfaces, and a new surface $X$ with $K_X^2=6$ and $(\mathbb Z/3\mathbb Z)^3\subset {Tors} (X)$ can be obtained as such coverings. It is proved that the group of automorphisms of a generic surface of the Campedelli type is isomorphic to $(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^3$. The irreduc…
We compute the automorphism groups of the Dolbeault, de Rham and Betti moduli spaces for the multiplicative group ${\mathbb C}^*$ associated to a compact connected Riemann surface.
The subject of this paper is the study of various families of quartic K3 surfaces which are invariant under a certain $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$ action. In particular, we describe families whose general member contains $8,16,24$ or $32$ lines as well as the $320$ conics found by Eklund (some of which degenerate into the mentioned lines). The second half of this paper is dedicated to finding the Picard group of a general member of each of these families, and describing it as a lattice. It turns out that for each family the Picard group of a very general surface is generated by the lines and…
Let $F\subseteq\mathbb{P}^3$ be a smooth determinantal quartic surface which is general in the Nöther-Lefschetz sense. In the present paper we give a complete classification of locally free sheaves $\mathcal{E}$ of rank $2$ on $F$ such that $h^1\big(F,\mathcal{E}(th)\big)=0$ for $t\in\mathbb{Z}$.
We prove two kinds of $\mathbb{Z}/2$-periodic Koszul duality equivalences for triangulated categories of matrix factorizations associated with $(-1)$-shifted cotangents over quasi-smooth affine derived schemes. We use this result to define $\mathbb{Z}/2$-periodic version of Donaldson-Thomas categories for local surfaces, whose $\mathbb{C}^{\ast}$-equivariant version was introduced and developed in the author's previous paper. We compare $\mathbb{Z}/2$-periodic DT category with the $\mathbb{C}^{\ast}$-equivariant one, and deduce wall-crossing equivalences of $\mathbb{Z}/2$-periodic DT categorie…
Over a perfect field, we determine the sheaf of $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected components of a class of threefolds given by the Blow-up of a variety admitting a $\mathbb{P}^1$-fibration over either an $\mathbb{A}^1$-rigid or a non-uniruled surface, along a smooth curve. As a consequence, we verify that the sheaf of $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected components for such varieties is $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant.
Let $F\subseteq\mathbb{P}^3$ be a smooth quartic surface and let $\mathcal{O}_F(h):=\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^3}(1)\otimes\mathcal{O}_F$. In the present paper we classify locally free sheaves $\mathcal{E}$ of rank $2$ on $F$ such that $c_1(\mathcal{E})=\mathcal{O}_F(2h)$, $c_2(\mathcal{E})=8$ and $h^1\big(F,\mathcal{E}(th)\big)=0$ for $t\in\mathbb{Z}$. We also deal with their stability.
We give bounds on the degree of generation and relations of section rings associated to arbitrary $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors on projective spaces of all dimensions and Hirzebruch surfaces. For section rings of effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors on projective spaces, we find the best possible bound on the degrees of generators and relations.
We explicitly describe the $\mathbb A^1$-chain homotopy classes of morphisms from a smooth henselian local scheme into a smooth projective surface, which is birationally ruled over a curve of genus $> 0$. We consequently determine the sheaf of naive $\mathbb A^1$-connected components of such a surface and show that it does not agree with the sheaf of its genuine $\mathbb A^1$-connected components when the surface is not a minimal model. However, the sections of the sheaves of both naive and genuine $\mathbb A^1$-connected components over schemes of dimension $\leq 1$ agree. As a consequence, w…
