We analyze low-frequency vibrational modes in a two-dimensional, zero-temperature, quasistatically sheared model glass to identify a population of structural "soft spots" where particle rearrangements are initiated. The population of spots evolves slowly compared to the interval between particle rearrangements and the soft spots are structurally different from the rest of the system. Our results suggest that disordered solids flow via localized rearrangements that tend to occur at soft spots, which are analogous to dislocations in crystalline solids.
Shearing granular materials induces non-affine displacements. Such non-affine displacements have been studied extensively, and are known to correlate with plasticity and other mechanical features of amorphous packings. A well known example is shear transformation zones as captured by the local deviation from affine deformation, $D^2_{min}$, and their relevance to failure and stress fluctuations. We analyze sheared frictional athermal disk packings and show that there exists at least one additional mesoscopic transport mechanism that superimposes itself on top of local diffusive motion. We evid…

Granular material exposed to shear shows a variety of unique phenomena: Reynolds dilatancy, positional order and orientational order effects may compete in the shear zone. We study granular packings consisting of macroscopic prolate, oblate and spherical grains and compare their behaviour. X-ray tomography is used to determine the particle positions and orientations in a cylindrical split bottom shear cell. Packing densities and the arrangements of individual particles in the shear zone are evaluated. For anisometric particles, we observe the competition of two opposite effects. One the one ha…
By minimizing the enthalpy of packings of frictionless particles, we obtain jammed solids at desired pressures and hence investigate the jamming transition with and without shear. Typical scaling relations of the jamming transition are recovered in both cases. In contrast to systems without shear, shear-driven jamming transition occurs at a higher packing fraction and the jammed solids are more rigid with an anisotropic force network. Furthermore, by introducing the macro-friction coefficient, we propose an explanation of the packing fraction gap between sheared and non-sheared systems at fixe…
Using an athermal quasistatic simulation protocol, we study the distribution of free volumes in sheared hard-particle packings close to, but below, the random-close packing threshold. We show that under shear, and independent of volume fraction, the free volumes develop features similar to close-packed systems -- particles self-organize in a manner as to mimick the isotropically jammed state. We compare athermally sheared packings with thermalized packings and show that thermalization leads to an erasure of these structural features. The temporal evolution, in particular the opening-up and the…
Self-organization, and transitions from reversible to irreversible behaviour, of interacting particle assemblies driven by externally imposed stresses or deformation is of interest in comprehending diverse phenomena in soft matter. They have been investigated in a wide range of systems, such as colloidal suspensions, glasses, and granular matter. In different density and driving regimes, such behaviour is related to yielding of amorphous solids, jamming, and memory formation, \emph{etc.} How these phenomena are related to each other has not, however, been much studied. In order to obtain a uni…
Jammed particulate systems composed of various shapes of particles undergo the jamming transition as they are compressed or decompressed. To date, sphere packings have been extensively studied in many previous works, where isostaticity at the transition and scaling laws with the pressure of various quantities, including the contact number and the vibrational density of states, have been established. Additionally, much attention has been paid to nonspherical packings, and particularly recent work has made progress in understanding ellipsoidal packings. In the present work, we study the dimer pa…
Contact breaking and Hertzian interactions between grains can both give rise to nonlinear vibrational response of static granular packings. We perform molecular dynamics simulations at constant energy in 2D of frictionless bidisperse disks that interact via Hertzian spring potentials as a function of energy and measure directly the vibrational response from the Fourier transform of the velocity autocorrelation function. We compare the measured vibrational response of static packings near jamming onset to that obtained from the eigenvalues of the dynamical matrix to determine the temperature ab…
Under applied shear strain, granular and amorphous materials deform via particle rearrangements, which can be small and localized or organized into system-spanning avalanches. While the statistical properties of avalanches under quasi-static shear are well-studied, the dynamics during avalanches is not. In numerical simulations of sheared soft spheres, we find that avalanches can be decomposed into bursts of localized deformations, which we identify using an extension of persistent homology methods. We also study the linear response of unstable systems during an avalanche, demonstrating that e…
We present an experiment on crystallization of packings of macroscopic granular spheres. This system is often considered to be a model for thermally driven atomic or colloidal systems. Cyclically shearing a packing of frictional spheres, we observe a first order phase transition from a disordered to an ordered state. The ordered state consists of crystallites of mixed FCC and HCP symmetry that coexist with the amorphous bulk. The transition, initiated by homogeneous nucleation, overcomes a barrier at 64.5% volume fraction. Nucleation consists predominantly of the dissolving of small nuclei and…
Using particle trajectory data obtained from x-ray tomography, we determine two kinds of effective temperatures in a cyclically sheared granular system. The first one is obtained from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem which relates the diffusion and mobility of lighter tracer particles immersed in the system. The second is the Edwards compactivity defined via the packing volume fluctuations. We find robust excellent agreement between these two temperatures, independent of the type of the tracers, cyclic shear amplitudes, and particle surface roughness. We further elucidate that in granular s…
We study the localization of vibrational modes of frictionless granular media. We introduce a new method, motivated by earlier work on non-Hermitian quantum problems, which works well both in the localized regime where the localization length $ξ$ is much less than the linear size $L$ and in the regime $ξ$ grater or of order $L$ when modes are extended throughout our finite system. Our very lowest frequency modes show "quasi-localized" resonances away from the jamming point; the spatial extent of these regions increases as the jamming point is approached, as expected theoretically. Throughout t…
Granular packings of non-convex or elongated particles can form free-standing structures like walls or arches. For some particle shapes, such as staples, the rigidity arises from interlocking of pairs of particles, but the origins of rigidity for non-interlocking particles remains unclear. We report on experiments and numerical simulations of sheared columns of "hexapods," particles consisting of three mutually orthogonal sphero-cylinders whose centers coincide. We vary the length-to-diameter aspect ratio, $α$, of the sphero-cylinders and subject the packings to quasistatic direct shear. For s…
We investigate correlations between low-frequency vibrational modes and rearrangements in two-dimensional colloidal glasses composed of thermosensitive microgel particles which readily permit variation of sample packing fraction. At each packing fraction, the particle displacement covariance matrix is measured and used to extract the vibrational spectrum of the "shadow" colloidal glass (i.e., the particle network with the same geometry and interactions as the sample colloid but absent damping). Rearrangements are induced by successive, small reductions in packing fraction. The experimental res…
We find in complementary experiments and event driven simulations of sheared inelastic hard spheres that the velocity autocorrelation function $ψ(t)$ decays much faster than $t^{-3/2}$ obtained for a fluid of elastic spheres at equilibrium. Particle displacements are measured in experiments inside a gravity driven flow sheared by a rough wall. The average packing fraction obtained in the experiments is 0.59, and the packing fraction in the simulations is varied between 0.5 and 0.59. The motion is observed to be diffusive over long times except in experiments where there is layering of particle…
In stark contrast to the jamming of frictionless hard-sphere (hard-disk if in two dimensions) packings, the critical jamming of frictional packings is much more elusive and still under intense debate. Here we show that frictional hard-disk packings self-organize near a critical jamming state when subjected to quasi-static steady-state cyclic shear, displaying scale-free fluctuations in particle velocity fields as characterized by the power spectra $E(k)\propto k^{-α}$ for both longitudinal and transverse modes in wavevector space, with $α\approx2.0\pm0.15$, and the nearly flat spectra $E(ω)\pr…
We comprehensively study mechanical and vibrational properties of dimer packings in three-dimensional space with particular attention on critical scaling behaviors near the jamming transition. First, we confirm the dependence of the packing fraction at the transition on the aspect ratio, the isostatic contact number at the transition, and the scaling dependence of the excess contact number on the excess density. Second, we study the elastic moduli, bulk and shear moduli, and establish power-law scaling of them. Finally, we study the vibrational density of states and its characteristic frequenc…
We conduct extensive independent numerical experiments considering frictionless disks without internal degrees of freedom (rotation etc.) in two dimensions. We report here that for a large range of the packing fractions below random-close packing, all components of the stress tensor of wet granular materials remain finite in the limit of zero shear rate. This is direct evidence for a fluid-to-solid arrest transition. The offset value of the shear stress characterizes plastic deformation of the arrested state {which corresponds to {\em dynamic yield stress} of the system}. {Based on an analytic…
We present extensive computational results for the effective temperature, defined by the fluctuation-dissipation relation between the mean square displacement and the average displacement of grains, under the action of a weak, external perturbation, of a sheared, bi-disperse granular packing of compressible spheres. We study the dependence of this parameter on the shear rate and volume fractions, the type of particle and the observable in the fluctuation-dissipation relation. We find the same temperature for different tracer particles in the system. The temperature becomes independent on the s…
In a recent paper [S. Mandal et al., Phys. Rev. E 88, 022129 (2013)] the nature of spatial correlations of plasticity in hard sphere glasses was addressed both via computer simulations and in experiments. It was found that the experimentally obtained correlations obey a power law whereas the correlations from simulations are better fitted by an exponential decay. We here provide direct evidence--- via simulations of a hard sphere glass in 2D---that this discrepancy is a consequence of the finite system size in the 3D simulations. By extending the study to a 2D soft disk model at zero temperatu…
We consider the contribution to the density of vibrational states and the distribution of energy barrier heights of incipient instabilities in a glass modeled by a jammed packing of spheres. On approaching an instability, the frequency of a normal mode and the height of the energy barrier to cross into a new ground state both vanish. These instabilities produce a contribution to the density of vibrational states that scales as $ω^3$ at low frequencies $ω$, but which vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. In addition, they affect an anharmonic property, the distribution of energy barriers $ΔH$, g…
To better understand the surprising low-frequency vibrational modes in structural glasses, we study the spectra of a large ensemble of sparse random matrices where disorder is controlled by the distribution of bond weights and network coordination. We find $D(ω)$ has three regimes: a very-low-frequency regime that can be predicted analytically using extremal statistics, an intermediate regime with quasi-localized modes, and a plateau with $D(ω) \sim ω^0$. In the special case of uniform bond weights, the intermediate regime displays $D(ω) \sim ω^4$, independent of network coordination and syste…
We probe the flow of two dimensional foams, consisting of a monolayer of bubbles sandwiched between a liquid bath and glass plate, as a function of driving rate, packing fraction and degree of disorder. First, we find that bidisperse, disordered foams exhibit strongly rate dependent and inhomogeneous (shear banded) velocity profiles, while monodisperse, ordered foams are also shear banded, but essentially rate independent. Second, we introduce a simple model based on balancing the averaged drag forces between the bubbles and the top plate and the averaged bubble-bubble drag forces. This model …
We numerically simulate the uniform athermal shearing of bidisperse, frictionless, two dimensional spherocylinders and three dimensional prolate ellipsoids. We focus on the orientational ordering of particles as an asphericity parameter $α\to 0$ and particles approach spherical. We find that the nematic order parameter $S_2$ is non-monotonic in the packing fraction $ϕ$, and that as $α\to 0$ $S_{2}$ stays finite at jamming and above. The approach to spherical particles thus appears to be singular. We also find that sheared particles continue to rotate above jamming, and that particle contacts p…
We performed molecular dynamics simulations of granular beds driven by a model hydrodynamic shear flow to elucidate general grain-scale mechanisms that determine the onset and cessation of sediment transport. By varying the Shields number (the nondimensional shear stress at the top of the bed) and particle Reynolds number (the ratio of particle inertia to viscous damping), we explore how variations of the fluid flow rate, particle inertia, and fluid viscosity affect the onset and cessation of bed motion. For low to moderate particle Reynolds numbers, a critical boundary separates mobile and st…
Granular crystallisation is an important phenomenon whereby ordered packing structures form in granular matter under vibration. However, compared with the well-developed principles of crystallisation at the atomic scale, crystallisation in granular matter remains relatively poorly understood. To investigate this behaviour further and bridge the fields of granular matter and materials science, we simulated mono-disperse spheres confined in cylindrical containers to study their structural dynamics during vibration. By applying adequate vibration, disorder-to-order transitions were induced. Such …
Much recent effort has focused on glassy and jamming properties of spherical particles. Very little is known about such phenomena for non-spherical particles, and we take a first step by studying ellipses. We find important differences between the dynamical and structural properties of disks and two-dimensional ellipses subject to continuous Couette shear. In particular, ellipses show slow dynamical evolution, without a counterpart in disks, in the mean velocity, local density, orientational order, and local stress. starting from an unjammed state, ellipses can first jam under shear, and then …
We study the vibrational properties near a free surface of disordered spring networks derived from jammed sphere packings. In bulk systems, without surfaces, it is well understood that such systems have a plateau in the density of vibrational modes extending down to a frequency scale $ω^*$. This frequency is controlled by $ΔZ = \langle Z \rangle - 2d$, the difference between the average coordination of the spheres and twice the spatial dimension, $d$, of the system, which vanishes at the jamming transition. In the presence of a free surface we find that there is a density of disordered vibrati…
Numerical simulations of soft-core frictionless disks in two dimensions are carried out to study behavior of a simple liquid as a function of thermal temperature $T$, packing fraction $ϕ$, and uniform applied shear strain rate $\dotγ$. Inferring the hard-core limit from our soft-core results, we find that it depends on the two parameters $ϕ$ and $T/\dotγ$. $T/\dotγ\to 0$ defines the athermal limit in which a shear driven jamming transition occurs at a well defined $ϕ_J$. $T/\dotγ\to\infty$ defines the thermalized limit where an equilibrium glass transition may take place at a $ϕ_G$. This concl…
Several mean-field theories predict that Hessian matrices of amorphous solids can be written by using the random matrix in the limit of the large spatial dimensions $d\to\infty$. Motivated by these results, we here propose a way to map a Hessian of the amorphous solid to a random matrix. This is possible by determining the coefficients of a random matrix so that the trace of the random matrix coincides with the Hessian of the original system. We compare our result with that of previous numerical simulations of harmonic spheres in several spatial dimensions $d=3$, $5$, and $9$. For small pressu…
When elastic solids are sheared, a nonlinear effect named after Poynting gives rise to normal stresses or changes in volume. We provide a novel relation between the Poynting effect and the microscopic Grüneisen parameter, which quantifies how stretching shifts vibrational modes. By applying this relation to random spring networks, a minimal model for, e.g., biopolymer gels and solid foams, we find that networks contract or develop tension because they vibrate faster when stretched. The amplitude of the Poynting effect is sensitive to the network's linear elastic moduli, which can be tuned via …
We present the experimental and numerical studies of a 2D sheared amorphous material constituted of bidisperse photo-elastic disks. We analyze the statistics of avalanches during shear including the local and global fluctuations in energy and changes in particle positions and orientations. We find scale free distributions for these global and local avalanches denoted by power-laws whose cut-offs vary with inter-particle friction and packing fraction. Different exponents are found for these power-laws depending on the quantity from which variations are extracted. An asymmetry in time of the ava…
Microstructural dynamics in amorphous particle packings is commonly probed by quantifying particle displacements. While rigidity in particle packings emerges when displacement of particles are hindered, it is not obvious how the typically disordered displacement metrics connect to mechanical response. Particle rotations, in contrast, are much less sensitive to confinement effects, while still sensitive to the mechanics of the packing. So far, little attention has been paid to connect microscopic rotational motion to mechanics of athermal amorphous packings. We demonstrate through experimental …
When we elastically impose a homogeneous, affine deformation on amorphous solids, they also undergo an inhomogeneous, non-affine deformation, which can have a crucial impact on the overall elastic response. To correctly understand the elastic modulus $M$, it is therefore necessary to take into account not only the affine modulus $M_A$, but also the non-affine modulus $M_N$ that arises from the non-affine deformation. In the present work, we study the bulk ($M=K$) and shear ($M=G$) moduli in static jammed particulate packings over a range of packing fractions $φ$. One novelty of this work is to…
Memory encoding by cyclic shear is a reliable process to store information in jammed solids, yet its underlying mechanism and its connection to the amorphous structure are not fully understood. When a jammed sphere packing is repeatedly sheared with cycles of the same strain amplitude, it optimizes its mechanical response to the cyclic driving and stores a memory of it. We study memory by cyclic shear training as a function of the underlying stability of the amorphous structure in marginally stable and highly stable packings, the latter produced by minimizing the potential energy using both po…
Amorphous packings prepared in the vicinity of the jamming transition play a central role in theoretical studies of the vibrational spectrum of glasses. Two mean-field theories predict that the vibrational density of states $g(ω)$ obeys a characteristic power law, $g(ω)\simω^2$, called the non-Debye scaling in the low-frequency region. Numerical studies have however reported that this scaling breaks down at low frequencies, due to finite dimensional effects. In this study, we prepare amorphous packings of up to $128000$ particles in spatial dimensions from $d=3$ to $d=9$ to characterise the ra…
As a function of packing fraction at zero temperature and applied stress, an amorphous packing of spheres exhibits a jamming transition where the system is sensitive to boundary conditions even in the thermodynamic limit. Upon further compression, the system should become insensitive to boundary conditions provided it is sufficiently large. Here we explore the linear response to a large class of boundary perturbations in 2 and 3 dimensions. We consider each finite packing with periodic-boundary conditions as the basis of an infinite square or cubic lattice and study properties of vibrational m…
We report on numerical simulations of simple models of athermal, bidisperse, soft-core, massive disks in two dimensions, as a function of packing fraction $ϕ$, inelasticity of collisions as measured by a parameter $Q$, and applied uniform shear strain rate $\dotγ$. Our particles have contact interactions consisting of normally directed elastic repulsion and viscous dissipation, as well as tangentially directed viscous dissipation, but no inter-particle Coulombic friction. Mapping the phase diagram in the $(ϕ,Q)$ plane for small $\dotγ$, we find a sharp first-order rheological phase transition …
We conduct experiments on two-dimensional packings of colloidal thermosensitive hydrogel particles whose packing fraction can be tuned above the jamming transition by varying the temperature. By measuring displacement correlations between particles, we extract the vibrational properties of a corresponding "shadow" system with the same configuration and interactions, but for which the dynamics of the particles are undamped. The vibrational spectrum and the nature of the modes are very similar to those predicted for zero-temperature idealized sphere models and found in atomic and molecular glass…
The statement of the title is shown by numerical simulation of homogeneously sheared packings of frictionless, nearly rigid beads in the quasistatic limit. Results coincide for steady flows at constant shear rate γ in the limit of small γ and static approaches, in which packings are equilibrated under growing deviator stresses. The internal friction angle ϕ, equal to 5.76 $\pm$ 0.22 degrees in simple shear, is independent on the average pressure P in the rigid limit. It is shown to stem from the ability of stable frictionless contact networks to form stress-induced anisotr…
Amorphous solids tend to present an abundance of soft elastic modes, which diminish their transport properties, generate heterogeneities in their elastic response, and affect non-linear processes like thermal activation of plasticity. This is especially true in packings of particles near their jamming transition, for which effective medium theory and variational arguments can both predict the density of vibrational modes. However, recent numerics support that one hypothesis of the variational argument does not hold. We provide a novel variational argument which overcomes this problem, and corr…
Utilizing molecular dynamics simulations, we report a non-monotonic dependence of the shear stress on the strength of an external magnetic field ($H$) in a liquid-crystalline mixture of magnetic and non-magnetic anisotropic particles. This non-monotonic behavior is in sharp contrast with the well-studied monotonic $H$-dependency of the shear stress in conventional ferrofluids, where the shear stress increases with $H$ until it reaches a saturation value. We relate the origin of this non-monotonicity to the competing effects of particle alignment along the shear-induced direction, on the one ha…
Granular materials can fail through spontaneous events like earthquakes or brittle fracture. However, measurements and analytic models which forecast failure in this class of materials, while of both fundamental and practical interest, remain elusive. Materials including numerical packings of spheres, colloidal glasses, and granular materials have been known to develop an excess of low-frequency vibrational modes as the confining pressure is reduced. Here, we report experiments on sheared granular materials in which we monitor the evolving density of excited modes via passive monitoring of aco…
Particle shape is a key to the space-filling and strength properties of granular matter. We consider a shape parameter $η$ describing the degree of distortion from a perfectly spherical shape. Encompassing most specific shape characteristics such as elongation, angularity and nonconvexity, $η$ is a low-order but generic parameter that we used in a numerical benchmark test for a systematic investigation of shape-dependence in sheared granular packings composed of particles of different shapes. We find that the shear strength is an increasing function of $η$ with nearly the same trend for all sh…
We present experimental measurements of dynamical heterogeneities in a dense system of microgel spheres, sheared at different rates and at different packing fractions in a microfluidic channel, and visualized with high speed digital video microscopy. A four-point dynamic susceptibility is deduced from video correlations, and is found to exhibit a peak that grows in height and shifts to longer times as the jamming transition is approached from two different directions. In particular, the time for particle-size root-mean square relative displacements is found to scale as $τ^* \sim (\dot γΔϕ^4)^{…
We measure the two-point density correlations and Voronoi cell distributions of cyclically sheared granular spheres obtained with a fluorescence technique and compare them with random packing of frictionless spheres. We find that the radial distribution function $g(r)$ is captured by the Percus-Yevick equation for initial volume fraction $ϕ=0.59$. However, small but systematic deviations are observed because of the splitting of the second peak as $ϕ$ is increased towards random close packing. The distribution of the Voronoi free volumes deviates from postulated $Γ$ distributions, and the orien…
We propose a `phase diagram' for particulate systems that interact via purely repulsive contact forces, such as granular media and colloidal suspensions. We identify and characterize two distinct classes of behavior as a function of the input kinetic energy per degree of freedom $T_0$ and packing fraction deviation above and below jamming onset $Δϕ=ϕ- ϕ_J$ using numerical simulations of purely repulsive frictionless disks. Iso-coordinated solids (ICS) only occur above jamming for $Δϕ> Δϕ_c(T_0)$; they possess average coordination number equal to the isostatic value ($< z> = z_{\rm iso}$) requi…
We experimentally and numerically study the structure and dynamics of a mono-disperse packing of spontaneously aligning self-propelled hard disks. The packings are such that their equilibrium counterparts form perfectly ordered hexagonal structures. Experimentally, we first form a perfect crystal in an hexagonal arena which respects the same crystalline symmetry. Frustration of the hexagonal order, obtained by removing a few particles, leads to the formation of a rapidly diffusing "droplet". Removing more particles, the whole system spontaneously forms a macroscopic sheared flow, while conserv…
States of self stress, organizations of internal forces in many-body systems that are in equilibrium with an absence of external forces, can be thought of as the constitutive building blocks of the elastic response of a material. In overconstrained disordered packings they have a natural mathematical correspondence with the zero-energy vibrational modes in underconstrained systems. While substantial attention in the literature has been paid to diverging length scales associated with zero- and finite-energy vibrational modes in jammed systems, less is known about the spatial structure of the st…
Soft, amorphous solids such as tissues, foams, and emulsions are composed of deformable particles. However, the effect of single-particle deformability on the collective behavior of soft solids is still poorly understood. We perform numerical simulations of two-dimensional jammed packings of explicitly deformable particles to study the mechanical response of model soft solids. We find that jammed packings of deformable particles with excess shape degrees of freedom possess low-frequency quartic vibrational modes that stabilize the packings even though they possess fewer interparticle contacts …
