Utilizing molecular dynamics simulations, we report a non-monotonic dependence of the shear stress on the strength of an external magnetic field ($H$) in a liquid-crystalline mixture of magnetic and non-magnetic anisotropic particles. This non-monotonic behavior is in sharp contrast with the well-studied monotonic $H$-dependency of the shear stress in conventional ferrofluids, where the shear stress increases with $H$ until it reaches a saturation value. We relate the origin of this non-monotonicity to the competing effects of particle alignment along the shear-induced direction, on the one hand, and the magnetic field direction, on the other hand. To isolate the role of these competing effects, we consider a two-component mixture composed of particles with effectively identical steric interactions, where the orientations of a small fraction, i.e.\ the magnetic ones, are coupled to the external magnetic field. By increasing $H$ from zero, the orientations of the magnetic particles show a Fréederickz-like transition and eventually start deviating from the shear-induced orientation, leading to an increase in shear stress. Upon further increase of $H$, a demixing of the magnetic particles from the non-magnetic ones occurs which leads to a drop in shear stress, hence creating a non-monotonic response to $H$. Unlike the equilibrium demixing phenomena reported in previous studies, the demixing observed here is neither due to size-polydispersity nor due to a wall-induced nematic transition. Based on a simplified Onsager analysis, we rather argue that it occurs solely due to packing entropy of particles with different shear- or magnetic-field-induced orientations.
We consider a confined sheared active polar liquid crystal with a uniform orientation and study the effect of variations in the magnitude of polarization. Restricting our analysis to one-dimensional geometries, we demonstrate that with asymmetric boundary conditions, this system is characterized, macroscopically, by a linear shear stress vs. shear strain relationship that does not pass through the origin: At a zero strain rate, the fluid sustains a non-zero stress. Analytic solutions for the polarization, density, and velocity fields are derived for asymptotically large or small systems and ar…
We study the flow behaviour of a twist-bend nematic $(N_{TB})$ liquid crystal. It shows three distinct shear stress ($σ$) responses in a certain range of temperatures and shear rates ($\dotγ$). In Region-I, $σ\sim\sqrt{\dotγ}$, in region-II, the stress shows a plateau, characterised by a power law $σ\sim{\dotγ}^α$, where $α\sim0.1-0.4$ and in region-III, $σ\sim\dotγ$. With increasing shear rate, $σ$ changes continuously from region-I to II, whereas it changes discontinuously with a hysteresis from region-II to III. In the plateau (region-II), we observe a dynamic stress fluctuations, exhibitin…
Based on a continuum theory, we investigate the manipulation of the non-equilibrium behavior of a sheared liquid crystal via closed-loop feedback control. Our goal is to stabilize a specific dynamical state, that is, the stationary "flow-alignment", under conditions where the uncontrolled system displays oscillatory director dynamics with in-plane symmetry. To this end we employ time-delayed feedback control (TDFC), where the equation of motion for the ith component, q_i(t), of the order parameter tensor is supplemented by a control term involving the difference q_i(t)-q_i(t-τ). In this diagon…
A noneqilibrium liquid theory for uniformly sheared granular liquids is developed starting from the SLLOD Liouville equation. We derive a generalized Green-Kubo formula and also demonstrate that the formulation is essentially independent of the choice of initial condition.
We show how liquid migrates in sheared unsaturated granular media using a grain scale model for capillary bridges. Liquid is redistributed to neighboring contacts after rupture of individual capillary bridges leading to redistribution of liquid on large scales. The liquid profile evolution coincides with a recently developed continuum description for liquid migration in shear bands. The velocity profiles which are linked to the migration of liquid as well as the density profiles of wet and dry granular media are studied.
One of the most ubiquitous and technologically important phenomena in nature is the nucleation of homogeneous flowing systems. The microscopic effects of shear on a nucleating system are still imperfectly understood, although in recent years a consistent picture has emerged. The opposing effects of shear can be split into two major contributions for simple liquids: increase of the energetic cost of nucleation, and enhancement of the kinetics. In this perspective, we describe the latest computational and theoretical techniques which have been developed over the past two decades. We collate and …
Spatial correlations for sheared isothermal elastic liquids and granular liquids are theoretically investigated. Using the generalized fluctuating hydrodynamics, correlation functions for both the microscopic scale and the macroscopic scale are obtained. The existence of the long-range correlation functions obeying power laws has been confirmed. The validity of our theoretical predictions have been verified from the molecular dynamics simulation.
The rheology of dense amorphous materials under large shear strain is not fully understood, partly due to the difficulty of directly viewing the microscopic details of such materials. We use a colloidal suspension to simulate amorphous materials, and study the shear-induced structural relaxation with fast confocal microscopy. We quantify the plastic rearrangements of the particles in several ways. Each of these measures of plasticity reveals spatially heterogeneous dynamics, with localized regions where many particles are strongly rearranging by these measures. We examine the shapes of these r…
We numerically study dynamics and correlation length scales of a colloidal liquid in both quiescent and sheared conditions to further understand the origin of slow dynamics and dynamic heterogeneity in glass-forming systems. The simulation is performed in a weakly frustrated two-dimensional liquid, where locally preferred order is allowed to develop with increasing density. The four-point density correlations and bond-orientation correlations, which have been frequently used to capture dynamic and static length scales $ξ$ in a quiescent condition, can be readily extended to a system under stea…

Using high-speed confocal microscopy, we measure the particle positions in a colloidal suspension under large amplitude oscillatory shear. Using the particle positions we quantify the in situ anisotropy of the pair-correlation function -- a measure of the Brownian stress. From these data, we find two distinct types of responses as the system crosses over from equilibrium to far-from-equilibrium states. The first is a nonlinear amplitude saturation that arises from shear-induced advection, while the second is a linear frequency saturation due to competition between suspension relaxation and she…
We propose and study a local map capable of describing the full variety of dynamical states, ranging from regular to chaotic, obtained when a nematic liquid crystal is subjected to a steady shear flow. The map is formulated in terms of a quaternion parametrization of rotations of the local frame described by the axes of the nematic director, subdirector and the joint normal to these, with two additional scalars describing the strength of ordering. Our model yields kayaking, wagging, tumbling, aligned and coexistence states, in agreement with previous formulations based on coupled ordinary diff…
Unified description on the long-time tail of velocity autocorrelation function and the long-range correlation for the equal-time spatial correlation functions is developed based on the generalized fluctuating hydrodynamics. The cross-over of the long-time tail from $t^{-3/2}$ to $t^{-5/2}$ is predicted independent of the density, and the equal-time spatial density correlation function and the equal-time spatial velocity correlation function respectively satisfy $r^{-11/3}$ and $r^{-5/3}$ for large $r$ limit.
We formulate a hydrodynamic theory of $p-$atic liquid crystals, namely two-dimensional anisotropic fluids endowed with generic $p-$fold rotational symmetry. Our approach, based on an order parameter tensor that directly embodies the discrete rotational symmetry of $p-$atic phases, allows us to unveil several unknown aspects of flowing $p-$atics, that previous theories, characterized by ${\rm O(2)}$ rotational symmetry, could not account for. This includes the onset of long-ranged orientational order in the presence of a simple shear flow of arbitrary shear rate, as opposed to the standard quas…
The importance of mesoscale fluctuations in flowing amorphous materials is widely accepted, without a clear understanding of their role. We propose a mean-field elastoplastic model that admits both stress and strain-rate fluctuations, and investigate the character of its power distribution under steady shear flow. The model predicts the suppression of negative power fluctuations near the liquid-solid transition; the existence of a fluctuation relation in limiting regimes but its replacement in general by stretched-exponential power-distribution tails; and a crossover between two distinct mecha…
We present a numerical simulation study of a simple monatomic Lennard-Jones liquid under shear flow, as a function of both temperature and shear rate. By investigating different observables we find that i) It exists a line in the (temperature-shear) plane that sharply marks the boarder between an ``equilibrium'' and a ``shear-controlled'' region for both the dynamic and the thermodynamic quantities; and ii) Along this line the structural relaxation time, is proportional to the inverse shear rate, i.e. to the typical time-scale introduced by the shear flow. Above the line the liquid dynamics is…
A variety of complex fluids under shear exhibit complex spatio-temporal behaviour, including what is now termed rheological chaos, at moderate values of the shear rate. Such chaos associated with rheological response occurs in regimes where the Reynolds number is very small. It must thus arise as a consequence of the coupling of the flow to internal structural variables describing the local state of the fluid. We propose a coupled map lattice (CML) model for such complex spatio-temporal behaviour in a passively sheared nematic liquid crystal, using local maps constructed so as to accurately de…
Liquid-phase exfoliation, the use of a sheared liquid to delaminate graphite into few-layer graphene, is a promising technique for the large-scale production of graphene. But the micro and nanoscale fluid-structure processes controlling the exfoliation are not fully understood. Here we perform non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of a defect-free graphite nanoplatelet suspended in a shear flow and measure the critical shear rate $\dot γ_c$ needed for the exfoliation to occur. We compare $\dot γ_c$ for different solvents including water and NMP, and nanoplatelets of different lengths.…
We analyze the behavior of a suspension of active polar particles under shear. In the absence of external forces, orientationally ordered active particles are known to exhibit a transition to a state of non-uniform polarization and spontaneous flow. Such a transition results from the interplay between elastic stresses, due to the liquid crystallinity of the suspension, and internal active stresses. In the presence of an external shear we find an extremely rich variety of phenomena, including an effective reduction (increase) in the apparent viscosity depending on the nature of the active stres…
Oscillatory shear on two-dimensional monodisperse liquid foams was performed. We show that the effect of the oscillatory shear is to cause the migration of bubbles which size is greater than that of a typical bubble of the foam. These so-called flaws move towards the periphery of the foam in a non random motion, thus realizing size segregation in a system which is by construction gravity insensitive. We also show that elongated cavities in the foam could be relaxed towards a more isotropic form with oscillatory shear, and we discuss the pertinent parameters of this relaxation.
A steady shear flow can drive supercooled liquids into a non-equilibrium state. Using molecular dynamics simulations under steady shear flow superimposed with oscillatory shear strain for a probe, non-equilibrium mechanical responses are studied for a model supercooled liquid composed of binary soft spheres. We found that even in the strongly sheared situation, the supercooled liquid exhibits surprisingly isotropic responses to oscillating shear strains applied in three different components of the strain tensor. Based on this isotropic feature, we successfully constructed a simple two-mode Max…
We consider a binary Lennard-Jones glassformer whose super-Arrhenius dynamics are correlated with the formation of particles organized into icosahedra under simple steady state shear. We recast this glassformer as an effective system of icosahedra [Pinney et al. J. Chem. Phys. 143 244507 (2015)]. From the observed population of icosahedra in each steady state, we obtain an effective temperature which is linearly dependent on the shear rate in the range considered. Upon shear banding, the system separates into a region of high shear rate and a region of low shear rate. The effective temperature…
In a preceding paper, we have presented a general lattice formulation of the dynamic self-consistent field (DSCF) theory for inhomogeneous, unentangled homopolymer fluids. Here we apply the DSCF theory to study both transient and steady-state interfacial structure, flow and rheology in a sheared planar channel containing either a one-component melt or a phase-separated, two-component blend. We focus here on the case that the solid-liquid and the liquid-liquid interfaces are parallel to the walls of the channel, and assume that the system has translational symmetry within planes parallel to the…

We numerically simulate the uniform athermal shearing of bidisperse, frictionless, two dimensional spherocylinders and three dimensional prolate ellipsoids. We focus on the orientational ordering of particles as an asphericity parameter $α\to 0$ and particles approach spherical. We find that the nematic order parameter $S_2$ is non-monotonic in the packing fraction $ϕ$, and that as $α\to 0$ $S_{2}$ stays finite at jamming and above. The approach to spherical particles thus appears to be singular. We also find that sheared particles continue to rotate above jamming, and that particle contacts p…
Using molecular simulations and a modified Classical Nucleation Theory, we study the nucleation, under flow, of a variety of liquids: different water models, Lennard-Jones and hard sphere colloids. Our approach enables us to analyze a wide range of shear rates inaccessible to brute-force simulations. Our results reveal that the variation of the nucleation rate with shear is universal. A simplified version of the theory successfully captures the non-monotonic temperature dependence of the nucleation behavior, which is shown to originate from the violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation.
In the present study, we performed molecular-dynamics simulations and investigated dynamical heterogeneity in a supercooled liquid under a steady shear flow. Dynamical heterogeneity can be characterized by three quantities: the correlation length $ξ_4(t)$, the intensity $χ_4(t)$, and the lifetime $τ_\text{hetero}(t)$. We quantified all three quantities by means of the correlation functions of the particle dynamics, i.e., the four-point correlation functions, which are extended to the sheared condition. Here, to define the local dynamics, we used two time intervals $t=τ_α$ and $τ_{\text{ngp}}$;…
The particle dynamics and shear forces of granular matter in a Couette geometry are determined experimentally. The normalized tangential velocity $V(y)$ declines strongly with distance $y$ from the moving wall, independent of the shear rate and of the shear dynamics. Local RMS velocity fluctuations $δV(y)$ scale with the local velocity gradient to the power $0.4 \pm 0.05$. These results agree with a locally Newtonian, continuum model, where the granular medium is assumed to behave as a liquid with a local temperature $δV(y)^2$ and density dependent viscosity.
We introduce a new mesoscopic model for nematic liquid crystals (LCs). We extend the particle-based stochastic rotation dynamics method, which reproduces the Navier-Stokes equation, to anisotropic fluids by including a simplified Ericksen-Leslie formulation of nematodynamics. We verify the applicability of this hybrid model by studying the equilibrium isotropic-nematic phase transition and nonequilibrium problems, such as the dynamics of topological defects, and the rheology of sheared LCs. Our simulation results show that this hybrid model captures many essential aspects of LC physics at the …
We have performed molecular dynamics simulations for a model two-dimensional soft-core mixture in a supercooled state. The mixture exhibits a slow structural relaxation in a quiescent state, however, the relaxation is much enhanced in sheared states. There observed surprisingly small anisotropy both in the coherent and incoherent density correlation functions even under extremely strong shear which is $10^3$ times faster than the structural relaxation rate. The present simulation results agree well with predictions of the recently developed mode-coupling theory in shear.
We study interfacial instabilities between two spatially periodically sheared ideal fluids. Bloch wavefunction decompositions of the surface deformation and fluid velocities result in a nonhermitian secular matrix with an associated band structure that yields both linear oscillating and nonoscillating instabilities, enhanced near Bragg planes corresponding to the periodicity determined by converging or diverging surface flows. The instabilities persist even when the dynamical effects of the upper fluid are neglected, in contrast to the uniform shear Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability. Periodic …
Numerical simulations of soft-core frictionless disks in two dimensions are carried out to study behavior of a simple liquid as a function of thermal temperature $T$, packing fraction $ϕ$, and uniform applied shear strain rate $\dotγ$. Inferring the hard-core limit from our soft-core results, we find that it depends on the two parameters $ϕ$ and $T/\dotγ$. $T/\dotγ\to 0$ defines the athermal limit in which a shear driven jamming transition occurs at a well defined $ϕ_J$. $T/\dotγ\to\infty$ defines the thermalized limit where an equilibrium glass transition may take place at a $ϕ_G$. This concl…
We study numerically the crystallization process in a supersaturated suspension of repulsive colloidal particles driven by simple shear flow. The effect of the shear flow on crystallization is two-fold: while it suppresses the initial nucleation, once a large enough critical nucleus has formed its growth is enhanced by the shear flow. Combining both effects implies an optimal strain rate at which the overall crystallization rate has a maximum. To gain insight into the underlying mechanisms, we employ a discrete state model describing the transitions between the local structural configurations …
Using Brownian Dynamics (BD) simulations we investigate non-equilibrium transitions of sheared colloidal films under controlled shear stress $σ_{\mathrm{xz}}$. In our approach the shear rate $\dotγ$ is a dynamical variable, which relaxes on a timescale $τ_c$ such that the instantaneous, configuration-dependent stress $σ_{\mathrm{xz}}(t)$ approaches a pre-imposed value. Investigating the dynamics under this "feedback-control" scheme we find unique behavior in regions where the flow curve $σ_{\mathrm{xz}}(\dotγ)$ of the uncontrolled system is monotonic. However, in non-monotonic regions our meth…
We studied the acoustic properties of liquid oxygen up to 90 T by means of ultrasound measurements. We observed a monotonic decrease of the sound velocity and an asymptotic increase of the sound attenuation when applying magnetic fields. The unusual attenuation, twenty times as large as the zero-field value, suggests strong fluctuations of the local molecular arrangement. We point out that the observed fluctuations are related to a liquid-liquid transition or crossover, from a small-magnetization to a large-magnetization liquid, which is characterized by a local-structure rearrangement. To inv…
Aiming to study the bubble cavitation problem in quiescent and sheared liquids, a third-order isothermal lattice Boltzmann (LB) model that describes a two-dimensional ($2D$) fluid obeying the van der Waals equation of state, is introduced. The evolution equations for the distribution functions in this off-lattice model with 16 velocities are solved using the corner transport upwind (CTU) numerical scheme on large square lattices (up to $6144 \times 6144$ nodes). The numerical viscosity and the regularization of the model are discussed for first and second order CTU schemes finding that the lat…
While the transformation of flowing liquids into rigid glasses is omnipresent, a complete understanding of vitrification remains elusive. Of the numerous approaches aimed at solving the glass transition problem, the Random First-Order Theory (RFOT) is the most prominent. However, the existence of the underlying thermodynamic phase transition envisioned by RFOT remains debatable, since its key microscopic predictions concerning the growth of amorphous order and the nature of dynamic correlations lack experimental verification. Here, by using holographic optical tweezers, we freeze a wall of par…
The complexity of the frictional dynamics at the microscopic scale makes difficult to identify all of its controlling parameters. Indeed, experiments on sheared elastic bodies have shown that the static friction coefficient depends on loading conditions, the real area of contact along the interfaces and the confining pressure. Here we show, by means of numerical simulations of a 2D Burridge-Knopoff model with a simple local friction law, that the macroscopic friction coefficient depends non-monotonically on the bulk elasticity of the system. This occurs because elastic constants control the ge…
The relaxation dynamics of glass forming liquids and their structure are influenced in the vicinity of confining walls. In view of the great potential of this effect for applications in those fields of science and industry, where liquids occur under strong confinement (e.g., nano-technology), the number of researchers studying various aspects and consequences of this non-monotonic behaviour has been rapidly growing. This review aims at providing an overview of the research activity in this newly emerging field. We first briefly discuss how competing mechanisms such as packing effects and short…
We probe the rheology of the model liquid octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS) confined into molecularly thin films, using a unique Surface Forces Apparatus allowing to explore a large range of shear rates and confinement. We thus show that OMCTS under increasing confinement exhibits the viscosity enhancement and the non-linear flow properties characteristic of a sheared supercooled liquid approaching its glass transition. Besides, we study the drainage of confined OMCTS via the propagation of "squeeze-out" fronts. The hydrodynamic model proposed by Becker and Mugele [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}…
We investigate the effective friction encountered by a mass sliding on a granular layer as a function of bed thickness and boundary roughness conditions. The observed friction has minima for a small number of layers before it increases and saturates to a value which depends on the roughness of the sliding surface. We use an index-matched interstitial liquid to probe the internal motion of the grains with fluorescence imaging in a regime where the liquid has no significant effect on the measured friction. The shear profiles obtained as a function of depth show decrease in slip near the sliding …
The acoustic properties of liquid oxygen have been studied up to 90 T by means of the ultrasound pulse-echo technique. A monotonic decrease of the sound velocity and an asymptotic increase of the acoustic attenuation are observed by applying magnetic fields. An unusually large acoustic attenuation, that becomes 20 times as large as the zero-field value, cannot be explained by the classical theory. These results indicate strong fluctuations of antiferromagnetically coupled local structures. We point out that the observed fluctuations are a precursor of a liquid-liquid transition, from a low-sus…
The collective diffusion effects in system of a colloidal particles in a liquid crystal has been proposed. In this article described peculiarity of collective diffusion colloidal particles in a liquid crystal, which can be observe experimentally. The diffusion coefficient should be crucial dependence from temperature and concentration of particles. In system colloidal particles arise from the elastic distortion of the elastic director field the inter-particle interaction. These interaction can cause nontrivial collective behavior, as the results the non-monotonic dependence collective diffusio…
The glass is a disordered solid that processes distinct dynamical and elastic properties compared with crystal. How heterogeneous glassy materials can be and to what extent dynamics is encoded with structure and elasticity are long-standing puzzles in glass science. In this experiment, we probed the responses of binary colloidal glasses towards the excitations induced by highly focused laser pulses. We observed very similar excitation patterns when the laser was repeated in the linear region; directly proving that the dynamical heterogeneity is strongly encoded with structure. In the non-linea…
We point out unconventional mechanical properties of confined active fluids, such as bacterial suspensions, under shear. Using a minimal model of an active liquid crystal with no free parameters, we predict the existence of a window of bacteria concentration for which a suspension of \textit{E.~Coli} effectively behaves, at steady-state, as a negative viscosity fluid and reach quantitative agreement with experimental measurements. Our theoretical analysis further shows that a negative apparent viscosity is due to a non-monotonic local velocity profile, and is associated with a non-monotonic st…
Shear induced drainage of a foamy yield stress fluid is investigated using MRI techniques. Whereas the yield stress of the interstitial fluid stabilizes the system at rest, a fast drainage is observed when a horizontal shear is imposed. It is shown that the sheared interstitial material behaves as a viscous fluid in the direction of gravity, the effective viscosity of which is controlled by shear in transient foam films between bubbles. Results provided for several bubble sizes are not captured by the R^2 scaling classically observed for liquid flow in particulate systems, such as foams and th…
Recent step strain experiments in well-entangled polymeric liquids demonstrated a bulk fracture-like phenomenon. We have studied this instability using a modern version of the Doi-Edwards theory for entangled polymers, and we find close quantitative agreement with the experiments. The phenomenon occurs because the viscoelastic liquid is sheared into a rubbery state that possesses an elastic constitutive instability (Marrucci and Grizzuti, 1983). The fracture is a transient manifestation of this instability, which relies on the amplification of spatially inhomogeneous fluctuations. This mechani…
Advances in high-precision dielectric spectroscopy has enabled access to non-linear susceptibilities of polar molecular liquids. The observed non-monotonic behavior has been claimed to provide strong support for theories of dynamic arrest based on thermodynamic amorphous order. Here we approach this question from the perspective of dynamic facilitation, an alternative view focusing on emergent kinetic constraints underlying the dynamic arrest of a liquid approaching its glass transition. We derive explicit expressions for the frequency-dependent higher-order dielectric susceptibilities exhibit…
Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we study the rheology of a model hybrid mixture of liquid crystals (LCs) and dipolar soft spheres (DSS) representing magnetic nanoparticles. The bulk isotropic LC-DSS mixture is sheared with different shear rates using Lees-Edwards periodic boundary conditions. The steady-state rheological properties and the effect of the shear on the microstructure of the mixture are studied for different strengths of the dipolar coupling, $λ$, among the DSS. We find that at large shear rates, the mixture shows a shear-thinning behavior for all considered …
In this paper the phase behavior and pattern formation in a sheared non-ideal fluid under a periodic potential is studied. An isothermal two-dimensional formulation of a lattice Boltzmann scheme for a liquid-vapor system with the van der Waals equation of state is presented and validated. Shear is applied by moving walls and the periodic potential will vary along the flow direction. A region of the parameter space, where in absence of flow a striped phase with oscillating density is stable, will be considered. At low shear rates the periodic patterns are preserved and slightly distorted by the…
The nonequilibrium dynamics of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture in a simple shear flow is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The range of temperature investigated covers both the liquid, supercooled and glassy states, while the shear rate covers both the linear and nonlinear regimes of rheology. The results can be interpreted in the context of a nonequilibrium, schematic mode-coupling theory developed recently, which makes the theory applicable to a wide range of soft glassy materials. The behavior of the viscosity is first investigated. In the nonlinear regime, strong shea…
