We find in complementary experiments and event driven simulations of sheared inelastic hard spheres that the velocity autocorrelation function $ψ(t)$ decays much faster than $t^{-3/2}$ obtained for a fluid of elastic spheres at equilibrium. Particle displacements are measured in experiments inside a gravity driven flow sheared by a rough wall. The average packing fraction obtained in the experiments is 0.59, and the packing fraction in the simulations is varied between 0.5 and 0.59. The motion is observed to be diffusive over long times except in experiments where there is layering of particles parallel to boundaries, and diffusion is inhibited between layers. Regardless, a rapid decay of $ψ(t)$ is observed, indicating that this is a feature of the sheared dissipative fluid, and is independent of the details of the relative particle arrangements. An important implication of our study is that the non-analytic contribution to the shear stress may not be present in a sheared inelastic fluid, leading to a wider range of applicability of kinetic theory approaches to dense granular matter.
We revisit the relation between the shear stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$, computed at finite shear strain $0 < γ\ll 1$, and the shear stress autocorrelation functions $C(t)|_γ$ and $C(t)|_τ$ computed, respectively, at imposed strain $γ$ and mean stress $τ$. Focusing on permanent isotropic spring networks it is shown theoretically and computationally that in general $G(t) = C(t)|_τ = C(t)|_γ + G_{eq}$ for $t > 0$ with $G_{eq}$ being the static equilibrium shear modulus. $G(t)$ and $C(t)|_γ$ thus must become different for solids and it is impossible to obtain $G_{eq}$ alone from $C(t)|_γ$ as o…
The shear stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$ may be determined from the shear stress $τ(t)$ after switching on a tiny step strain $γ$ or by inverse Fourier transformation of the storage modulus $G^{\prime}(ω)$ or the loss modulus $G^{\prime\prime}(ω)$ obtained in a standard oscillatory shear experiment at angular frequency $ω$. It is widely assumed that $G(t)$ is equivalent in general to the equilibrium stress autocorrelation function $C(t) = βV \langle δτ(t) δτ(0)\rangle$ which may be readily computed in computer simulations ($β$ being the inverse temperature and $V$ the volume). Focusing on is…
The Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell models is considered to determine the rheological properties in a granular binary mixture in the simple shear flow state. The transport coefficients (shear viscosity and viscometric functions) are {\em exactly} evaluated in terms of the coefficients of restitution, the (reduced) shear rate and the parameters of the mixture (particle masses, diameters and concentration). The results show that in general, for a given value of the coefficients of restitution, the above transport properties decrease with increasing shear rate.
One prototypical instability in granular flows is the shear-banding instability, in which a uniform granular shear flow breaks into alternating bands of dense and dilute clusters of particles having low and high shear (shear stress or shear rate), respectively. In this work, the shear-banding instability in an arbitrarily inelastic granular shear flow is analyzed through the linear stability analysis of granular hydrodynamic equations closed with Navier--Stokes-level constitutive relations. It is shown that the choice of appropriate constitutive relations plays an important role in predicting …
Considering a granular fluid of inelastic smooth hard spheres we discuss the conditions delineating the rheological regimes comprising Newtonian, Bagnoldian, shear thinning, and shear thickening behavior. Developing a kinetic theory, valid at finite shear rates and densities around the glass transition density, we predict the viscosity and Bagnold coefficient at practically relevant values of the control parameters. The determination of full flow curves relating the shear stress $σ$ to the shear rate $\dotγ$, and predictions of the yield stress complete our discussion of granular rheology deri…
We carry out constant volume simulations of steady-state, shear driven flow in a simple model of athermal, bidisperse, soft-core, frictionless disks in two dimensions, using a dissipation law that gives rise to Bagnoldian rheology. Focusing on the small strain rate limit, we map out the rheological behavior as a function of particle packing fraction $ϕ$ and a parameter $Q$ that measures the elasticity of binary particle collisions. We find a $Q^*(ϕ)$ that marks the clear crossover from a region characteristic of strongly inelastic collisions, $Q<Q^*$, to a region characteristic of weakly inela…
The influence of an applied shear field on the dynamics of an aging colloidal suspension has been investigated by the dynamic light scattering determination of the density autocorrelation function. Though a stationary state is never observed, the slow dynamics crosses between two different non-equilibrium regimes as soon as the structural relaxation time approaches the inverse shear rate. In the shear dominated regime (at high shear rate values) the structural relaxation time is found to be strongly sensitive to shear rate while aging proceeds at a very slow rate. The effect of shear on the de…
The Boltzmann equation for d-dimensional inelastic Maxwell models is considered to analyze transport properties in spatially inhomogeneous states close to the simple shear flow. A normal solution is obtained via a Chapman--Enskog--like expansion around a local shear flow distribution f^{(0)} that retains all the hydrodynamic orders in the shear rate. The constitutive equations for the heat and momentum fluxes are obtained to first order in the deviations of the hydrodynamic field gradients from their values in the reference state and the corresponding generalized transport coefficients are {\e…
The dynamics of sheared inelastic-hard-sphere systems are studied using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and direct simulation Monte Carlo. In the molecular dynamics simulations Lees-Edwards boundary conditions are used to impose the shear. The dimensions of the simulation box are chosen to ensure that the systems are homogeneous and that the shear is applied uniformly. Various system properties are monitored, including the one-particle velocity distribution, granular temperature, stress tensor, collision rates, and time between collisions. The one-particle velocity distribution …
We compute the rheological properties of inelastic hard spheres in steady shear flow for general shear rates and densities. Starting from the microscopic dynamics we generalise the Integration Through Transients (\textsc{itt}) formalism to a fluid of dissipative, randomly driven granular particles. The stress relaxation function is computed approximately within a mode-coupling theory---based on the physical picture, that relaxation of shear is dominated by slow structural relaxation, as the glass transition is approached. The transient build-up of stress in steady shear is thus traced back to …
We present a generalized mode-coupling theory for a dense binary fluid mixture. The theory is used to calculate molecular-scale renormalizations to the stress-tensor autocorrelation function (STAF) and to the long-wavelength zero-frequency shear viscosity. As in the case of a dense simple fluid, we find that the STAF appears to decay as $t^{-3/2}$ over an intermediate range of time. The coefficient of this long-time tail is more than two orders of magnitude larger than that obtained from conventional mode-coupling theory. Our study focuses on the effect of compositional disorder on the decay o…
The Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell models is considered to determine the velocity moments through fourth degree in the simple shear flow state. First, the rheological properties (which are related to the second-degree velocity moments) are {\em exactly} evaluated in terms of the coefficient of restitution $α$ and the (reduced) shear rate $a^*$. For a given value of $α$, the above transport properties decrease with increasing shear rate. Moreover, as expected, the third-degree and the asymmetric fourth-degree moments vanish in the long time limit when they are scaled with the thermal …
We consider dense rapid shear flow of inelastically colliding hard disks. Navier-Stokes granular hydrodynamics is applied accounting for the recent finding \cite{Luding,Khain} that shear viscosity diverges at a lower density than the rest of constitutive relations. New interpolation formulas for constitutive relations between dilute and dense cases are proposed and justified in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A linear stability analysis of the uniform shear flow is performed and the full phase diagram is presented. It is shown that when the inelasticity of particle collision becomes large…
The inelastic Boltzmann equation for a granular gas is applied to spatially inhomogeneous states close to the uniform shear flow. A normal solution is obtained via a Chapman-Enskog-like expansion around a local shear flow distribution. The heat and momentum fluxes are determined to first order in the deviations of the hydrodynamic field gradients from their values in the reference state. The corresponding transport coefficients are determined from a set of coupled linear integral equations which are approximately solved by using a kinetic model of the Boltzmann equation. The main new ingredien…
We describe a special class of steady Couette flows in dilute granular gases admitting a non-Newtonian hydrodynamic description for strong dissipation. The class occurs when viscous heating exactly balances inelastic cooling, resulting in a uniform heat flux. It includes the Fourier flow of ordinary gases and the simple or uniform shear flow (USF) of granular gases as special cases. The rheological functions have the same values as in the USF and generalized thermal conductivity coefficients can be identified. These points are confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations, Monte Carlo simulation…
Non-Newtonian transport properties of an inertial suspension of inelastic rough hard spheres under simple shear flow are determined from the Boltzmann kinetic equation. The influence of the interstitial gas on rough hard spheres is modeled via a Fokker-Planck generalized equation for rotating spheres accounting for the coupling of both the translational and rotational degrees of freedom of grains with the background viscous gas. The generalized Fokker-Planck term is the sum of two ordinary Fokker-Planck differential operators in linear $\mathbf{v}$ and angular $\boldsymbolω$ velocity space. As…
We report on numerical simulations of simple models of athermal, bidisperse, soft-core, massive disks in two dimensions, as a function of packing fraction $ϕ$, inelasticity of collisions as measured by a parameter $Q$, and applied uniform shear strain rate $\dotγ$. Our particles have contact interactions consisting of normally directed elastic repulsion and viscous dissipation, as well as tangentially directed viscous dissipation, but no inter-particle Coulombic friction. Mapping the phase diagram in the $(ϕ,Q)$ plane for small $\dotγ$, we find a sharp first-order rheological phase transition …
We discuss the uniform shear flow of a fluidized granular bed composed of monodisperse Hertzian spheres. Considering high densities around the glass transition density of inelastic Hertzian spheres, we report kinetic theory expressions for the Newtonian viscosity as well as the Bagnold coefficient. We discuss the dependence of the transport coefficients on density and coefficient of restitution.
In the preceding paper (cond-mat/0405252), we have conjectured that the main transport properties of a dilute gas of inelastic hard spheres (IHS) can be satisfactorily captured by an equivalent gas of elastic hard spheres (EHS), provided that the latter are under the action of an effective drag force and their collision rate is reduced by a factor $(1+α)/2$ (where $α$ is the constant coefficient of normal restitution). In this paper we test the above expectation in a paradigmatic nonequilibrium state, namely the simple or uniform shear flow, by performing Monte Carlo computer simulations of th…
We report on measurements of self-diffusion coefficients in discrete numerical simulations of steady, homogeneous, collisional shearing flows of nearly identical, frictional, inelastic spheres. We focus on a range of relatively high solid volume fractions that are important in those terrestrial gravitational shearing flows that are dominated by collisional interactions. Diffusion over this range of solid fraction has not been well characterized in previous studies. We first compare the measured values with an empirical scaling based on shear rate previously proposed in the literature, and high…
The long-time behaviors of the velocity autocorrelation function $C(t)$ for sheared fluids ^M are investigated theoretically and numerically. It is found the existence of the cross-overs of^M $C(t)$ from $t^{-d/2}$ to $t^{-d}$ ^M in sheared fluids of elastic particles without any thermostat, and from $t^{-d/2}$ to $t^{-(d+2)/2}$ ^M in both sheared fluids of elastic particles with a thermostat and sheared granular fluids,^M where $d$ is the spatial dimension. ^M The validity of the predictions has been confirmed by^M our numerical simulations.
We study the effect of pre-collisional velocity correlations on granular shear flow by molecular dynamics simulations of the inelastic hard sphere system. Comparison of the simulations with the kinetic theory reveals that the theory overestimates both the energy dissipation rate and the normal stress in the dense flow region. We find that the relative normal velocity of colliding particles is smaller than that expected from random collisions, and the discrepancies in the dissipation and the normal stress can be adjusted by introducing the idea of the collisional temperature, from which we conc…
I derive a mode-coupling theory for the velocity autocorrelation function, ψ(t), in a fluid of randomly driven inelastic hard spheres far from equilibrium. With this, I confirm a conjecture from simulations that the velocity autocorrelation function decays algebraically, ψ(t) ~ t^{-3/2}, if momentum is conserved. I show that the slow decay is due to the coupling to transverse currents.
The fundamental question addressed in this paper is whether the partial Chapman--Enskog expansion $P_{xy}=-\sum_{k=0}^\infty η_k ({\partial u_x}/{\partial y})^{2k+1}$ of the shear stress converges or not for a gas of inelastic hard spheres. By using a simple kinetic model it is shown that, in contrast to the elastic case, the above series does converge, the radius of convergence increasing with inelasticity. It is argued that this paradoxical conclusion is not an artifact of the kinetic model and can be understood in terms of the time evolution of the scaled shear rate in the uniform shear flo…
Segregation induced by a thermal gradient of an impurity in a driven low-density granular gas is studied. The system is enclosed between two parallel walls from which we input thermal energy to the gas. We study here steady states occurring when the inelastic cooling is exactly balanced by some external energy input (stochastic force or viscous heating), resulting in a uniform heat flux. A segregation criterion based on Navier-Stokes granular hydrodynamics is written in terms of the tracer diffusion transport coefficients, whose dependence on the parameters of the system (masses, sizes and coe…
X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy was used to measure the diffusive dynamics of colloidal particles in a shear flow. The results presented here show how the intensity autocorrelation functions measure both the diffusive dynamics of the particles and their flow-induced, convective motion. However, in the limit of low flow/shear rates, it is possible to obtain the diffusive component of the dynamics, which makes the method suitable for the study of the dynamical properties of a large class of complex soft-matter and biological fluids. An important benefit of this experimental strategy over m…
We use numerical simulations to investigate the effect of different dissipative models on the shearing rheology of massive soft-core frictionless disks in two dimensions. We show that the presence of Newtonian (overdamped) vs Bagnoldian (inertial) rheology is related to the formation of large connected clusters of disks, and that sharp transitions may exist between the two as system parameters vary. In the limit of strongly inelastic collisions, we find that rheological curves collapse to a well-defined limit when plotted against an appropriate dimensionless strain rate.
Computer simulations of sheared granular fluids, modeled as inelastic hard spheres, are presented which show signs of a uniquely three-dimensional instabilty. In the stable regime, a linear velocity profile, $v_{x}=ay$, with shear rate $a$ is established using Lees-Edwards boundary conditions. In the unstable regime, the velocity profile aquires a dependence on the third dimension of the form $v_{x}=ay+sin(2πz/L)$ in a cubic box with sides of length $L$. An analysis of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations shows the presence of an instability and gives a simple expression for the critical wav…
Unified description on the long-time tail of velocity autocorrelation function and the long-range correlation for the equal-time spatial correlation functions is developed based on the generalized fluctuating hydrodynamics. The cross-over of the long-time tail from $t^{-3/2}$ to $t^{-5/2}$ is predicted independent of the density, and the equal-time spatial density correlation function and the equal-time spatial velocity correlation function respectively satisfy $r^{-11/3}$ and $r^{-5/3}$ for large $r$ limit.
We numerically and theoretically investigate how the softness of particles affects the rheology of sheared dilute granular gases. We find that the kinetic theory predicts the deviation of the flow curve from the Bagnold scaling, and it works well below a certain shear rate when we compare with the simulation results. It is also found that there is no theoretical solution above this shear rate, which is because the energy loss due to inelastic collisions cannot be balanced with the energy injection by the shear.
We rigorously establish that, in disordered three-dimensional (3D) isotropic solids, the stress autocorrelation function presents anisotropic terms that decay as $1/r^3$ at long-range, with $r$ the distance, as soon as either pressure or shear stress fluctuations are normal. By normal, we mean that the fluctuations of stress, as averaged over spherical domains, decay as the inverse domain volume. Since this property is required for macroscopic stress to be self-averaging, it is expected to hold generically in all glasses and we thus conclude that the presence of $1/r^3$ stress correlation tail…
Dynamics of inelastic gases are studied within the framework of random collision processes. The corresponding Boltzmann equation with uniform collision rates is solved analytically for gases, impurities, and mixtures. Generally, the energy dissipation leads to a significant departure from the elastic case. Specifically, the velocity distributions have overpopulated high energy tails and different velocity components are correlated. In the freely cooling case, the velocity distribution develops an algebraic high-energy tail, with an exponent that depends sensitively on the dimension and the deg…
In this letter, we discuss how flow inhomogeneity affects the self-diffusion behavior in granular flows. Whereas self-diffusion scalings have been well characterized in the past for homogeneous shearing, the effect of shear localization and nonlocality of the flow has not been studied. We therefore present measurements of self-diffusion coefficients in discrete numerical simulations of steady, inhomogeneous, and collisional shearing flows of nearly identical, frictional, and inelastic spheres. We focus on a wide range of dense solid volume fractions, that correspond to geophysical and industri…
We investigate the origin of the violation of the Stokes-Einstein (SE) relation in two-dimensional Yukawa liquids. Using comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations, we identify the time scales supporting the violation of the SE relation $D\propto (η/T)^{-1}$, where $D$ is the self-diffusion coefficient and $η$ is the shear viscosity. We first compute the self-intermediate scattering function $F_s(k,t)$, the non-Gaussian parameter $α_2$, and the autocorrelation function of the shear stress $C_η(t)$. The timescales obtained from these functions are included the structural relaxation time $τ_α$…
We study in this work a steady shearing laminar flow with null heat flux (usually called "uniform shear flow") in a gas-solid suspension at low density. The solid particles are modeled as a gas of smooth hard spheres with inelastic collisions while the influence of the surrounding interstitial fluid on the dynamics of grains is modeled by means of a volume drag force, in the context of a rheological model for suspensions. The model is solved by means of three different but complementary routes, two of them being theoretical (Grad's moment method applied to the corresponding Boltzmann equation …
The nonequilibrium hydrodynamic correlations of a Multiparticle-Collision-Dynamics (MPC) fluid in shear flow are studied by analytical calculations and simulations. The Navier-Stokes equations for a MPC fluid are linearized about the shear flow and the hydrodynamic modes are evaluated as an expansion in the momentum vector. The shear-rate dependence and anisotropy of the transverse and longitudinal velocity correlations are analyzed. We demonstrate that hydrodynamic correlations in shear flow are anisotropic, specifically, the two transverse modes are no longer identical. In addition, our simu…
We investigate velocity statistics of homogeneous inelastic gases using the Boltzmann equation. Employing an approximate uniform collision rate, we obtain analytic results valid in arbitrary dimension. In the freely evolving case, the velocity distribution is characterized by an algebraic large velocity tail, P(v,t) ~ v^{-sigma}. The exponent sigma(d,epsilon), a nontrivial root of an integral equation, varies continuously with the spatial dimension, d, and the dissipation coefficient, epsilon. Although the velocity distribution follows a scaling form, its moments exhibit multiscaling asymptoti…
In the steady Couette flow of a granular gas the sign of the heat flux gradient is governed by the competition between viscous heating and inelastic cooling. We show from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell particles that a special class of states exists where the viscous heating and the inelastic cooling exactly compensate each other at every point, resulting in a uniform heat flux. In this state the (reduced) shear rate is enslaved to the coefficient of restitution $α$, so that the only free parameter is the (reduced) thermal gradient $ε$. It turns out that the reduced moments of or…
The stochastic motion of a two-dimensional vesicle in linear shear flow is studied at finite temperature. In the limit of small deformations from a circle, Langevin-type equations of motion are derived, which are highly nonlinear due to the constraint of constant perimeter length. These equations are solved in the low temperature limit and using a mean field approach, in which the length constraint is satisfied only on average. The constraint imposes non-trivial correlations between the lowest deformation modes at low temperature. We also simulate a vesicle in a hydrodynamic solvent by using t…
The linear response description for impurity diffusion in a granular fluid undergoing homogeneous cooling is developed in the preceeding paper. The formally exact Einstein and Green-Kubo expressions for the self-diffusion coefficient are evaluated there from an approximation to the velocity autocorrelation function. These results are compared here to those from molecular dynamics simulations over a wide range of density and inelasticity, for the particular case of self-diffusion. It is found that the approximate theory is in good agreement with simulation data up to moderate densities and degr…
We investigate shear-induced crystallization in a very dense flow of mono-disperse inelastic hard spheres. We consider a steady plane Couette flow under constant pressure and neglect gravity. We assume that the granular density is greater than the melting point of the equilibrium phase diagram of elastic hard spheres. We employ a Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics with constitutive relations all of which (except the shear viscosity) diverge at the crystal packing density, while the shear viscosity diverges at a smaller density. The phase diagram of the steady flow is described by three parameters: an…
We study the Navier-Stokes steady states for a low density monodisperse hard sphere granular gas (i.e, a hard sphere ideal monatomic gas with inelastic interparticle collisions). We present a classification of the uniform steady states that can arise from shear and temperature (or energy input) applied at the boundaries (parallel walls). We consider both symmetric and asymmetric boundary conditions and find steady states not previously reported, including sheared states with linear temperature profiles. We provide explicit expressions for the hydrodynamic profiles for all these steady states. …
The decay of a small homogeneous perturbation of the temperature of a dilute granular gas in the steady uniform shear flow state is investigated. Using kinetic theory based on the inelastic Boltzmann equation, a closed equation for the decay of the perturbation is derived. The equation involves the generalized shear viscosity of the gas in the time-dependent shear flow state, and therefore it predicts relevant rheological effects beyond the quasi-elastic limit. A good agreement is found when comparing the theory with molecular dynamics simulation results. Moreover, the Onsager postulate on the…
Rheology of a dilute cohesive granular gas is theoretically and numerically studied. The flow curve between the shear viscosity and the shear rate is derived from the inelastic Boltzmann equation for particles having square-well potentials in a simple shear flow. It is found that (i) the stable uniformly sheared state only exists above a critical shear rate and (ii) the viscosity in the uniformly sheared flow is almost identical to that for uniformly sheared flow of hard core granular particles. Below the critical shear rate, clusters grow with time, in which the viscosity can be approximated …
In contrast to normal fluids, a granular fluid under shear supports a steady state with uniform temperature and density since the collisional cooling can compensate locally for viscous heating. It is shown that the hydrodynamic description of this steady state is inherently non-Newtonian. As a consequence, the Newtonian shear viscosity cannot be determined from experiments or simulation of uniform shear flow. For a given degree of inelasticity, the complete nonlinear dependence of the shear viscosity on the shear rate requires the analysis of the unsteady hydrodynamic behavior. The relationshi…
Steady simple shear flow of a low-density binary mixture of inelastic smooth hard spheres is studied in the context of the Boltzmann equation. This equation is solved by using two different and complementary approaches: a Sonine polynomial expansion and the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. The dependence of the shear and normal stresses as well as of the steady granular temperature on both the dissipation and the parameters of the mixture (ratios of masses, concentration, and sizes) is analyzed. In contrast to previous studies, the theory predicts and the simulation confirms that the part…
This paper deals with the convergence/divergence issue of the Chapman-Enskog series expansion of the shear and normal stresses for a granular gas of inelastic hard spheres. From the exact solution of a simple kinetic model in the uniform shear and longitudinal flows, it is shown that (except in the elastic limit) both series converge and their respective radii of convergence increase with inelasticity. This paradoxical result can be understood in terms of the time evolution of the Knudsen number and the existence of a nonequilibrium steady state.
The Boltzmann collision operator for a dilute granular gas of inelastic rough hard spheres is much more intricate than its counterpart for inelastic smooth spheres. Now the one-body distribution function depends not only on the translational velocity of the center of mass but also on the angular velocity of the particle. Moreover, the collision rules couple both velocities, involving not only the coefficient of normal restitution but also the coefficient of tangential restitution. The aim of this paper is to propose an extension to inelastic rough particles of a Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook-like kine…
We employ hydrodynamic equations to follow the clustering instability of a freely cooling dilute gas of inelastically colliding spheres into a well-developed nonlinear regime. We simplify the problem by dealing with a one-dimensional coarse-grained flow. We observe that at a late stage of the instability the shear stress becomes negligibly small, and the gas flows solely by inertia. As a result the flow formally develops a finite time singularity, as the velocity gradient and the gas density diverge at some location. We argue that flow by inertia represents a generic intermediate asymptotic of…
We study the steady plane shear flow of a dense assembly of frictional, inelastic disks using discrete simulation and prescribing the pressure and the shear rate. We show that, in the limit of rigid grains, the shear state is determined by a single dimensionless number, called inertial number I, which describes the ratio of inertial to pressure forces. Small values of I correspond to the quasi-static regime of soil mechanics, while large values of I correspond to the collisional regime of the kinetic theory. Those shear states are homogeneous, and become intermittent in the quasi-static regime…
The rheological properties for dilute and moderately dense granular binary mixtures of smooth, inelastic hard disks/spheres under uniform shear flow in steady state conditions are reported. The results are based on the Enskog kinetic theory, numerically solved by a dense gas extension of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method for dilute gases. These results are confronted to the ones also obtained by performing molecular dynamics simulations with very good agreement for the lower densities and higher coefficients of restitution. It appears that the range of densities for which the Enskog equ…
We discuss in this work the validity of the theoretical solution of the nonlinear Couette flow for a granular impurity obtained in a recent work [preprint arXiv:0802.0526], in the range of large inelasticity and shear rate. We show there is a good agreement between the theoretical solution and Monte Carlo simulation data, even under these extreme conditions. We also discuss an extended theoretical solution that would work for large inelasticities in ranges of shear rate $a$ not covered by our previous work (i.e., below the threshold value $a_{th}$ for which uniform shear flow may be obtained) …
The Eckart co-rotating frame is used to analyze the dynamics of star polymers under shear flow, either in melt or solution and with different types of bonds. This formalism is compared with the standard approach used in many previous studies on polymer dynamics, where an apparent angular velocity $ω$ is obtained from relation between the tensor of inertia and angular momentum. A common mistake is to interpret $ω$ as the molecular rotation frequency, which is only valid for rigid-body rotation. The Eckart frame, originally formulated to analyze the infrared spectra of small molecules, dissects …
