We compute the rheological properties of inelastic hard spheres in steady shear flow for general shear rates and densities. Starting from the microscopic dynamics we generalise the Integration Through Transients (\textsc{itt}) formalism to a fluid of dissipative, randomly driven granular particles. The stress relaxation function is computed approximately within a mode-coupling theory---based on the physical picture, that relaxation of shear is dominated by slow structural relaxation, as the glass transition is approached. The transient build-up of stress in steady shear is thus traced back to transient density correlations which are computed self-consistently within mode-coupling theory. The glass transition is signalled by the appearance of a yield stress and a divergence of the Newtonian viscosity, characterizing linear response. For shear rates comparable to the structural relaxation time, the stress becomes independent of shear rate and we observe shear thinning, while for the largest shear rates Bagnold scaling, i.e., a quadratic increase of shear stress with shear rate, is recovered. The rheological properties are qualitatively similar for all values of $\varepsilon$, the coefficient of restitution; however, the magnitude of the stress as well as the range of shear thinning and thickening show significant dependence on the inelasticity.
Considering a granular fluid of inelastic smooth hard spheres we discuss the conditions delineating the rheological regimes comprising Newtonian, Bagnoldian, shear thinning, and shear thickening behavior. Developing a kinetic theory, valid at finite shear rates and densities around the glass transition density, we predict the viscosity and Bagnold coefficient at practically relevant values of the control parameters. The determination of full flow curves relating the shear stress $σ$ to the shear rate $\dotγ$, and predictions of the yield stress complete our discussion of granular rheology deri…
A gas of inelastic rough spheres admits a spatially homogeneous base state which turns into a hydrodynamic state after a finite relaxation time. We show that this relaxation time is hardly dependent on the degree of inelasticity but increases dramatically with decreasing roughness. An accurate description of translational-rotational velocity correlations at all times is also provided. At a given inelasticity, the roughness parameter can be tuned to produce a huge distortion from the Maxwellian distribution function. The results are obtained from a Grad-like solution of the Boltzmann-Enskog equ…
The Boltzmann equation for inelastic and rough hard spheres is considered as a model of a dilute granular gas. In this model, the collisions are characterized by constant coefficients of normal and tangential restitution and hence the translational and rotational degrees of freedom are coupled. A normal solution to the Boltzmann equation is obtained by means of the Chapman-Enskog method for states near the homogeneous cooling state. The analysis is carried out to first order in the spatial gradients of the number density, the flow velocity, and the granular temperature. The constitutive equati…
Starting from a recent derivation of the energy production rates in terms of the number of translational and rotational degrees of freedom, a comparative study on different granular temperatures in gas mixtures of inelastic and rough disks or spheres is carried out. Both the homogeneous freely cooling state and the state driven by a stochastic thermostat are considered. It is found that the relaxation number of collisions per particle is generally smaller for disks than for spheres, the mean angular velocity relaxing more rapidly than the temperature ratios. In the asymptotic regime of the und…
In this paper we numerically investigate the influence of dissipation during particle collisions in an homogeneous turbulent velocity field by coupling a discrete element method to a Lattice-Boltzmann simulation with spectral forcing. We show that even at moderate particle volume fractions the influence of dissipative collisions is important. We also investigate the transition from a regime where the turbulent velocity field significantly influences the spatial distribution of particles to a regime where the distribution is mainly influenced by particle collisions.
Soft, low-friction particles in silos show peculiar features during their discharge. The outflow velocity and the clogging probability both depend upon the momentary silo fill height, in sharp contrast to silos filled with hard particles. The reason is the fill-height dependence of the pressure at the orifice. We study the statistics of silo discharge of soft hydrogel spheres. The outflow is found to become increasingly fluctuating and even intermittent with decreasing orifice size, and with decreasing fill height. In orifices narrower than two particle diameters, outflow can stop completely, …
We study here the steady state attained in a granular gas of inelastic rough spheres that is subject to a spatially uniform random volume force. The stochastic force has the form of the so-called white noise and acts by adding impulse to the particle translational velocities. We work out an analytical solution of the corresponding velocity distribution function from a Sonine polynomial expansion that displays energy non-equipartition between the translational and rotational modes, translational and rotational kurtoses, and translational-rotational velocity correlations. By comparison with a nu…
We report the emergence of a giant Mpemba effect in the uniformly heated gas of inelastic rough hard spheres: The initially hotter sample may cool sooner than the colder one, even when the initial temperatures differ by more than one order of magnitude. In order to understand this behavior, it suffices to consider the simplest Maxwellian approximation for the velocity distribution in a kinetic approach. The largeness of the effect stems from the fact that the rotational and translational temperatures, which obey two coupled evolution equations, are comparable. Our theoretical predictions agree…
Conditions for the stability under linear perturbations around the homogeneous cooling state are studied for dilute granular gases of inelastic and rough hard disks or spheres with constant coefficients of normal ($α$) and tangential ($β$) restitution. After a formally exact linear stability analysis of the Navier--Stokes--Fourier hydrodynamic equations in terms of the translational ($d_t$) and rotational ($d_r$) degrees of freedom, the transport coefficients derived in the companion paper [A. Megías and A. Santos, "Hydrodynamics of granular gases of inelastic and rough hard disks or spheres. …
Non-Newtonian transport properties of an inertial suspension of inelastic rough hard spheres under simple shear flow are determined from the Boltzmann kinetic equation. The influence of the interstitial gas on rough hard spheres is modeled via a Fokker-Planck generalized equation for rotating spheres accounting for the coupling of both the translational and rotational degrees of freedom of grains with the background viscous gas. The generalized Fokker-Planck term is the sum of two ordinary Fokker-Planck differential operators in linear $\mathbf{v}$ and angular $\boldsymbolω$ velocity space. As…
The transport coefficients for dilute granular gases of inelastic and rough hard disks or spheres with constant coefficients of normal ($α$) and tangential ($β$) restitution are obtained in a unified framework as functions of the number of translational ($d_t$) and rotational ($d_r$) degrees of freedom. The derivation is carried out by means of the Chapman--Enskog method with a Sonine-like approximation in which, in contrast to previous approaches, the reference distribution function for angular velocities does not need to be specified. The well-known case of purely smooth $d$-dimensional part…
In a recent paper [A. Santos, G. M. Kremer, and V. Garzó, \emph{Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl.} \textbf{184}, 31-48 (2010)] the collisional energy production rates associated with the translational and rotational granular temperatures in a granular fluid mixture of inelastic rough hard spheres have been derived. In the present paper the energy production rates are explicitly decomposed into equipartition rates (tending to make all the temperatures equal) plus genuine cooling rates (reflecting the collisional dissipation of energy). Next the homogeneous free cooling state of a binary mixture is anal…
The Boltzmann collision operator for a dilute granular gas of inelastic rough hard spheres is much more intricate than its counterpart for inelastic smooth spheres. Now the one-body distribution function depends not only on the translational velocity of the center of mass but also on the angular velocity of the particle. Moreover, the collision rules couple both velocities, involving not only the coefficient of normal restitution but also the coefficient of tangential restitution. The aim of this paper is to propose an extension to inelastic rough particles of a Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook-like kine…
We consider a dilute granular gas of hard spheres colliding inelastically with coefficients of normal and tangential restitution $α$ and $β$, respectively. The basic quantities characterizing the distribution function $f(\mathbf{v},\bmω)$ of linear ($\mathbf{v}$) and angular ($\bmω$) velocities are the second-degree moments defining the translational ($T^\text{tr}$) and rotational ($T^\text{rot}$) temperatures. The deviation of $f$ from the Maxwellian distribution parameterized by $T^\text{tr}$ and $T^\text{rot}$ can be measured by the cumulants associated with the fourth-degree velocity momen…
We study the inelastic collapse in the one-dimensional $N$-particle systems in the situation where the system is driven from below under the gravity. We investigate the hard-sphere limit of the inelastic soft-sphere systems by numerical simulations to find how the collision rate per particle $n_{coll}$ increases as a function of the elastic constant of the sphere $k$ when the restitution coefficient $e$ is kept constant. For the systems with large enough $N \agt 20$, we find three regimes in $e$ depending on the behavior of $n_{coll}$ in the hard-sphere limit: (i) uncollapsing regime for $1 \g…
Previous experiments have revealed that shock waves driven through dissipative gases may become unstable, for example, in granular gases, and in molecular gases undergoing strong relaxation effects. The mechanisms controlling these instabilities are not well understood. We successfully isolated and investigated this instability in the canonical problem of piston driven shock waves propagating into a medium characterized by inelastic collision processes. We treat the standard model of granular gases, where particle collisions are taken as inelastic with constant coefficient of restitution. The …
Colloidal glasses form from hard spheres, nearly hard spheres, ellipsoids and platelets or their attractive variants have been studied in detail. Complementing and checking theoretical approaches and simulations, the many different types of model systems have significantly advanced our understanding of the glass transition in general. Despite their early prediction, however, no experimental charged sphere glasses have been found at low density, where the competing process of crystallization prevails. We here report the formation of a transient amorphous solid formed from charged polymer sphere…
We design a nematic collider for controlled out-of-equilibrium anisotropic aggregation of spherical colloidal particles. The nematic surrounding imparts dipolar interactions among the spheres. A bidirectional backflow of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a periodic electric field forces the spheres to collide with each other. The inelastic collisions are of two types, head-to-tail and head-to-head. Head-to-tail collisions of dipoles result in longitudinal aggregation while head-to-head collisions promote aggregation in the transversal direction. The frequency of head-to-head collisions is se…
The dynamical properties of a tracer or impurity particle immersed in a host gas of inelastic and rough hard spheres in the homogeneous cooling state is studied. Specifically, the breakdown of energy equipartition as characterized by the tracer/host ratios of translational and rotational temperatures is analyzed by exploring a wide spectrum of values of the control parameters of the system (masses, moments of inertia, sizes, and coefficients of restitution). Three complementary approaches are considered. On the theoretical side, the Boltzmann and Boltzmann--Lorentz equations (both assuming the…
The aim of this work is to explore the combined effect of polydispersity and roughness on the partial energy production rates and on the total cooling rate of a granular fluid mixture. We consider a mixture of inelastic rough hard spheres of different number densities, masses, diameters, moments of inertia, and mutual coefficients of normal and tangential restitution. Starting from the first equation of the BBGKY hierarchy, the collisional energy production rates associated with the translational and rotational temperatures ($T_i^\text{tr}$ and $T_i^\text{rot}$) are expressed in terms of two-b…
The rolling resistance between a pair of contacting particles can be modeled with two mechanisms. The first mechanism, already widely addressed in the DEM literature, involves a contact moment between the particles. The second mechanism involves a reduction of the tangential contact force, but without a contact moment. This type of rotational resistance, termed creep-friction, is the subject of the paper. Within the creep-friction literature, the term "creep" does not mean a viscous mechanism, but rather connotes a slight slip that accompanies rolling. Two extremes of particle motions bound th…
The most widely used model for granular gases is perhaps the inelastic hard-sphere model (IHSM), where the grains are assumed to be perfectly smooth spheres colliding with a constant coefficient of normal restitution. A much more tractable model is the inelastic Maxwell model (IMM), in which the velocity-dependent collision rate is replaced by an effective mean-field constant. This simplification has been taken advantage of by many researchers to find a number of exact results within the IMM. On the other hand, both the IHSM and IMM neglect the impact of roughness -- generally present in real …
We present results from microscopic mode coupling theory generalized to colloidal dispersions under shear in an integration-through-transients formalism. Stress-strain curves in start-up shear, flow curves, and normal stresses are calculated with the equilibrium static structure factor as only input. Hard spheres close to their glass transition are considered, as are hard spheres with a short-ranged square-well attraction at their attraction dominated glass transition. The consequences of steric packing and physical bond formation on the linear elastic response, the stress release during yield…

We use existing 3D Discrete Element simulations of simple shear flows of spheres to evaluate the radial distribution function at contact that enables kinetic theory to correctly predict the pressure and the shear stress, for different values of the collisional coefficient of restitution. Then, we perform 3D Discrete Element simulations of plane flows of frictionless, inelastic spheres, sheared between walls made bumpy by gluing particles in a regular array, at fixed average volume fraction and distance between the walls. The results of the numerical simulations are used to derive boundary cond…
Granular matter under rapid flow conditions can be modeled as a granular gas, namely, a gas of hard spheres dissipating part of their kinetic energy during binary collisions (inelastic hard spheres, IHS). On the other hand, given that collisions are inelastic one has to inject energy into the system to compensate for the inelastic cooling and maintain it in rapid conditions. Although in real experiments the external energy is supplied to the system by the boundaries, it is quite usual in computer simulations to heat the system by the action of an external driving force or thermostat. Despite t…
Live cells have ambiguous mechanical properties. They were often described as either elastic solids or viscoelastic fluids and have recently been classified as soft glassy materials characterized by weak power-law rheology. Nonlinear rheological measurements have moreover revealed a pronounced inelastic response indicative of a competition between stiffening and softening. It is an intriguing question whether these observations can be explained from the material properties of much simpler in-vitro reconstituted networks of biopolymers that serve as reduced model systems for the cytoskeleton. H…
We study a model amorphous solid that is subjected to repeated athermal cyclic shear deformation. It has previously been demonstrated that the memory of the amplitudes of shear deformation the system is subjected to (or trained at) is encoded, and can be retrieved by subsequent deformation cycles that serve as read operations. Here we consider different read protocols and measurements and show that single and multiple memories can be robustly retrieved through these different protocols. We also show that shear deformation by a larger amplitude always erases the stored memories. These observati…
We discuss the uniform shear flow of a fluidized granular bed composed of monodisperse Hertzian spheres. Considering high densities around the glass transition density of inelastic Hertzian spheres, we report kinetic theory expressions for the Newtonian viscosity as well as the Bagnold coefficient. We discuss the dependence of the transport coefficients on density and coefficient of restitution.
The Navier-Stokes transport coefficients of a granular dense fluid of smooth inelastic hard disks or spheres are explicitly determined by solving the inelastic Enskog equation by means of Grad's moment method. The transport coefficients are explicitly determined as functions of the (constant) coefficient of restitution and the solid volume fraction. In addition, the cooling rate is also calculated to first order in the spatial gradients. The calculations are performed for an arbitrary number of dimensions. The results are not limited to small dissipation and are expected to apply at moderate d…
We have designed 3D numerical simulations of a soft spheres model, with size polidispersity and in athermal conditions, to study the transient shear banding that occurs during yielding of jammed soft solids. We analyze the effects of different types of drag coefficients used in the simulations and compare the results obtained using Lees-Edwards periodic boundary conditions with the case in which the same model solid is confined between two walls. The specific damping mechanism and the different boundary conditions indeed modify the load curves and the velocity profiles in the transient regime.…
The transient response of model hard sphere glasses is examined during the application of steady rate start-up shear using Brownian Dynamics (BD) simulations, experimental rheology and confocal microscopy. With increasing strain the glass initially exhibits an almost linear elastic stress increase, a stress peak at the yield point and then reaches a constant steady state. The stress overshoot has a non-monotonic dependence with Peclet number, Pe, and volume fraction, ϕ, determined by the available free volume and a competition between structural relaxation and shear advection. Examination of t…
We show that the position of the de Gennes minimum in scattering spectra, where the dynamics of liquids shows down, is given by a hard-sphere expression for a range of mono-atomic liquids that crystallize in a close packed structure. This expression relates the position of the minimum to the number density of the liquid, without any adjustable or unknown parameters. We argue that this implies that a liquid can be viewed as a close packed structure of the cages that represent the confinement of atoms by their neighbors. We further show that some metals deviate from this expression, namely those…
In deep supercooled liquids, particles get trapped in transient cages made up of neighbouring particles. Here we define a cage from a geometrical quantity, free volume, such that the free volume of a particle is the cage volume. First we show that the relationship between the average cage volume and the structural relaxation time questions the existence of glass transition in hard sphere systems. Our observation suggests that the cage volume is zero at the transition. Further we show that cage rearrangements are strongly coupled to the single particle squared displacements. Additionally a cage…
Intermediate filaments are cytoskeletal proteins that are key regulators of cell mechanics, a role which is intrinsically tied to their hierarchical structure and their unique ability to accommodate large axial strains. However, how the single-filament response to applied strains translates to networks remains unclear, particularly with regards to the crosslinking role played by the filaments' disordered "tail" domains. Here we test the role of these noncovalent crosslinks in the nonlinear rheology of reconstituted networks of the intermediate filament protein vimentin, probing their stress- a…
Grad's method of moments is employed to develop higher-order Grad's moment equations---up to first 26-moments---for granular gases within the framework of the (inelastic) Boltzmann equation. The homogeneous cooling state of a freely cooling granular gas is investigated with the Grad's 26-moment equations in a semi-linearized setting and it is shown that the granular temperature in the homogeneous cooling state still decays according to Haff's law while the other higher-order moments decay on a faster time scale. The constitutive relations for stress and heat flux (the Navier--Stokes and Fourie…
It is well-recognized that granular media under rapid flow conditions can be modeled as a gas of hard spheres with inelastic collisions. At moderate densities, a fundamental basis for the determination of the granular hydrodynamics is provided by the Enskog kinetic equation conveniently adapted to account for inelastic collisions. A surprising result (compared to its molecular gas counterpart) for granular mixtures is the failure of the energy equipartition, even in homogeneous states. This means that the partial temperatures $T_i$ (measuring the mean kinetic energy of each species) are differ…
