The stochastic motion of a two-dimensional vesicle in linear shear flow is studied at finite temperature. In the limit of small deformations from a circle, Langevin-type equations of motion are derived, which are highly nonlinear due to the constraint of constant perimeter length. These equations are solved in the low temperature limit and using a mean field approach, in which the length constraint is satisfied only on average. The constraint imposes non-trivial correlations between the lowest deformation modes at low temperature. We also simulate a vesicle in a hydrodynamic solvent by using the multi-particle collision dynamics technique, both in the quasi-circular regime and for larger deformations, and compare the stationary deformation correlation functions and the time autocorrelation functions with theoretical predictions. Good agreement between theory and simulations is obtained.
We calculate the stress tensor for a quasi-spherical vesicle and we thermally average it in order to obtain the actual, mechanical, surface tension $τ$ of the vesicle. Both closed and poked vesicles are considered. We recover our results for $τ$ by differentiating the free-energy with respect to the proper projected area. We show that $τ$ may become negative well before the transition to oblate shapes and that it may reach quite large negative values in the case of small vesicles. This implies that spherical vesicles may have an inner pressure lower than the outer one.
The dynamics of a single fluid bilayer membrane in an external hydrodynamic flow field is considered. The deterministic equation of motion for the configuration is derived taking into account both viscous dissipation in the surrounding liquid and local incompressibility of the membrane. For quasi-spherical vesicles in shear flow, thermal fluctuations can be incorporated in a Langevin-type equation of motion for the deformation amplitudes. The solution to this equation shows an overdamped oscillatory approach to a stationary tanktreading shape. Inclination angle and ellipiticity of the contour …
We consider a ubiquitous scenario where a fluctuating, semipermeable vesicle is embedded in solution while enclosing a fixed number of solute particles. The swelling with increasing number of particles or decreasing concentration of the outer solution exhibits a continuous phase transition from a fluctuating state to the maximum-volume configuration, whereupon appreciable pressure difference and surface tension build up. This criticality is unique to particle-encapsulating vesicles, whose volume and inner pressure both fluctuate. It implies a universal swelling behavior of such vesicles as the…
Bound vesicles subject to lateral forces such as arising from shear flow are investigated theoretically by combining a lubrication analysis of the bound part with a scaling approach to the global motion. A minor inclination of the bound part leads to significant lift due to the additive effects of lateral and tank-treading motions. With increasing shear rate, the vesicle unbinds from the substrate at a critical value. Estimates are in agreement with recent experimental data.
We add thermal noise consistently to reduced models of undeformable vesicles and capsules in shear flow and derive analytically the corresponding stochastic equations of motion. We calculate the steady-state probability distribution function and construct the corresponding phase diagrams for the different dynamical regimes. For fluid vesicles, we predict that at small shear rates thermal fluctuations induce a tumbling motion for any viscosity contrast. For elastic capsules, due to thermal mixing, an intermittent regime appears in regions where deterministic models predict only pure tank treadi…
The dynamics and rheology of suspensions of fluid vesicles or red blood cells is investigated by a combination of molecular dynamics and mesoscale hydrodynamics simulations in two dimensions. The vesicle suspension is confined between two no-slip walls, which are driven externally to generate a shear flow with shear rate $\dotγ$. The flow behavior is studied as a function of $\dotγ$, the volume fraction of vesicles, and the viscosity contrast between inside and outside fluids. Results are obtained for the encounter and interactions of two vesicles, the intrinsic viscosity of the suspension, an…
The dynamics of a nucleate cell in shear flow is of great relevance in cancer cells and circulatory tumor cells where they dominate the dynamics of blood. Buoyed by the success of Giant Unilamellar vesicles in explaining the dynamics of anucleate cells such as Red Blood cells, compound vesicles have been suggested as a simple model for nucleate cells. In this work, a theoretical model is presented to study the deformation and dynamics of a compound vesicle in linear shear flow using small deformation theory and spherical harmonics with higher order approximation to the membrane forces. The res…
The dynamics of a vesicle suspension in a shear flow between parallel plates has been investigated under microgravity conditions, where vesicles are only submitted to hydrodynamic effects such as lift forces due to the presence of walls and drag forces. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution of the vesicles has been recorded thanks to digital holographic microscopy, during parabolic flights and under normal gravity conditions. The collected data demonstrates that vesicles are pushed away from the walls with a lift velocity proportional to $\dotγ R^3/z^2$ where $\dotγ$ is the shear …
The effect of membrane viscosity on the dynamics of vesicles in shear flow is studied. We present a new simulation technique, which combines three-dimensional multi-particle collision dynamics for the solvent with a dynamically-triangulated membrane model. Vesicles are found to transit from steady tank-treading to unsteady tumbling motion with increasing membrane viscosity. Depending on the reduced volume and membrane viscosity, shear can induce both discocyte-to-prolate and prolate-to-discocyte transformations. This dynamical behavior can be understood from a simplified model.
The dynamics of fluid vesicles in simple shear flow is studied using mesoscale simulations of dynamically-triangulated surfaces, as well as a theoretical approach based on two variables, a shape parameter and the inclination angle, which has no adjustable parameters. We show that between the well-known tank-treading and tumbling states, a new ``swinging'' state can appear. We predict the dynamic phase diagram as a function of the shear rate, the viscosities of the membrane and the internal fluid, and the reduced vesicle volume. Our results agree well with recent experiments.
We describe the dynamics of three-dimensional fluid vesicles in steady shear flow in the vicinity of a wall. This is analyzed numerically at low Reynolds numbers using a boundary element method. The area-incompressible vesicle exhibits bending elasticity. Forces due to adhesion or gravity oppose the hydrodynamic lift force driving the vesicle away from a wall. We investigate three cases. First, a neutrally buoyant vesicle is placed in the vicinity of a wall which acts only as a geometrical constraint. We find that the lift velocity is linearly proportional to shear rate and decreases with incr…
The dynamics of fluid vesicles in oscillatory shear flow was studied using differential equations of two variables: the Taylor deformation parameter and inclination angle $θ$. In a steady shear flow with a low viscosity $η_{\rm {in}}$ of internal fluid, the vesicles exhibit steady tank-treading motion with a constant inclination angle $θ_0$. In the oscillatory flow with a low shear frequency, $θ$ oscillates between $\pm θ_0$ or around $θ_0$ for zero or finite mean shear rate $\dotγ_{\rm m}$, respectively. As shear frequency $f_γ$ increases, the vesicle oscillation becomes delayed with respect …
Numerical simulations of vesicle suspensions are performed in two dimensions to study their dynamical and rheological properties. An hybrid method is adopted, which combines a mesoscopic approach for the solvent with a curvature-elasticity model for the membrane. Shear flow is induced by two counter-sliding parallel walls, which generate a linear flow profile. The flow behavior is studied for various vesicle concentrations and viscosity ratios between the internal and the external fluid. Both the intrinsic viscosity and the thickness of depletion layers near the walls are found to increase wit…
We study the fully nonlinear, nonlocal dynamics of two-dimensional multicomponent vesicles in a shear flow with matched viscosity of the inner and outer fluids. Using a nonstiff, pseudo-spectral boundary integral method, we investigate dynamical patterns induced by inhomogeneous bending for a two phase system. Numerical results reveal that there exist novel phase-treading and tumbling mechanisms that cannot be observed for a homogeneous vesicle. In particular, unlike the well-known steady tank-treading dynamics characterized by a fixed inclination angle, here the phase-treading mechanism leads…
The dynamics and rheology of a vesicle confined in a channel under shear flow are studied at finite temperature. The effect of finite temperature on vesicle motion and system viscosity is investigated. A two-dimensional numerical model, which includes thermal fluctuations and is based on a combination of molecular dynamics and mesoscopic hydrodynamics, is used to perform a detailed analysis in a wide range of the Peclet numbers (the ratio of the shear rate to the rotational diffusion coefficient). The suspension viscosity is found to be a monotonous increasing function of the viscosity contras…
Vesicles are micrometric soft particles whose the membrane is a two-dimensional incompressible fluid governed by bending resistance leading to a zoology of shapes. The dynamics of deflated vesicles in shear flow with a bottom wall, a first minimal configuration to consider confined vesicles is investigated using numerical simulations. Coexistence under flow of oblate (metastable) and prolate (stable) shapes is studied in details. In particular, we discuss the boundaries of the region of coexistence in the (v, Ca) plane where v is the reduced volume of the vesicle and Ca the Capillary number. W…
The dynamics of two-dimensional viscous vesicles in shear flow, with different fluid viscosities $η_{\rm in}$ and $η_{\rm out}$ inside and outside, respectively, is studied using mesoscale simulation techniques. Besides the well-known tank-treading and tumbling motions, an oscillatory swinging motion is observed in the simulations for large shear rate. The existence of this swinging motion requires the excitation of higher-order undulation modes (beyond elliptical deformations) in two dimensions. Keller-Skalak theory is extended to deformable two-dimensional vesicles, such that a dynamical pha…
Despite the recent upsurge of theoretical reduced models for vesicle shape dynamics, comparisons with experiments have not been accomplished. We review the implications of some of the recently proposed models for vesicle dynamics, especially the Tumbling-Trembling domain regions of the phase plane and show that they all fail to capture the essential behavior of real vesicles for excess areas, Δ, greater than 0.4. We emphasize new observations of shape harmonics and the role of thermal fluctuations.
Dynamics of a single vesicle under shear flow between two parallel plates is studied using two-dimensional lattice-Boltzmann simulations. We first present how we adapted the lattice-Boltzmann method to simulate vesicle dynamics, using an approach known from the immersed boundary method. The fluid flow is computed on an Eulerian regular fixed mesh while the location of the vesicle membrane is tracked by a Lagrangian moving mesh. As benchmarking tests, the known vesicle equilibrium shapes in a fluid at rest are found and the dynamical behavior of a vesicle under simple shear flow is being reprod…
A numerical and systematic parameter study of three-dimensional vesicle electrohydrodynamics is presented to investigate the effects of different fluid and membrane properties. The dynamics of vesicles in the presence of DC electric fields is considered, both in the presence and absence of linear shear flow. For suspended vesicles it is shown that the conductivity ratio and viscosity ratio between the interior and exterior fluids, as well as the vesicle membrane capacitance, substantially affect the minimum electric field strength required to induce a full Prolate-Oblate-Prolate transition. In …
Vesicles or biological cells under simultaneous shear and electric field can be encountered in dielectrophoretic devices or devices used for continuous flow electrofusion or electroporation. In this work, the dynamics of a vesicle subjected to simultaneous shear and uniform AC electric field is investigated in the small deformation limit. The coupled equations for vesicle orientation and shape evolution are derived theoretically and the resulting nonlinear equations are handled numerically to generate relevant phase diagrams that demonstrate the effect of electrical parameters on the different…
The viscosity of lipid bilayer membranes plays an important role in determining the diffusion constant of embedded proteins and the dynamics of membrane deformations, yet it has historically proven very difficult to measure. Here we introduce a new method based on quantification of the large-scale circulation patterns induced inside vesicles adhered to a solid surface and subjected to simple shear flow in a microfluidic device. Particle Image Velocimetry based on spinning disk confocal imaging of tracer particles inside and outside of the vesicle, and tracking of phase-separated membrane domai…
We develop a new model, to our knowledge, for the many-body hydrodynamics of amphiphilic Janus particles suspended in a viscous background flow. The Janus particles interact through a hydrophobic attraction potential that leads to self-assembly into bilayer structures. We adopt an efficient integral equation method for solving the screened Laplace equation for hydrophobic attraction and for solving the mobility problem for hydrodynamic interactions. The integral equation formulation accurately captures both interactions for near touched boundaries. Under a linear shear flow, we observe the tan…
Using a refractive index matching method, we investigate the trajectories of particles in a three dimensional granular packing submitted to cyclic shear deformation. The particle motion observed during compaction is not diffusive but exhibits transient cage effect, similar to the one observed in colloidal glasses. We precisely study the statistics of the step size between two successive cycles and observe that it is proportional to the shear amplitude. The link between the microscopic observations and the macroscopic evolution of the volume fraction during compaction is discussed.
The effect of strong shear flow on highly fluctuating lamellar systems stabilized by intermembrane collisions via the Helfrich interaction is studied. Advection enters the microscopic equation of motion for a single membrane via a non-linear coupling. Upon coarse-graining the theory for a single bilayer up to the length scale of the collision length, at which a hydrodynamic description applies, an additional dynamical coupling is generated which is of the form of a wavevector-dependent tension that is non-linear in the applied shear rate. This new term has consequences for the effects of stron…
Vesicles under shear flow exhibit various dynamics: tank-treading ($tt$), tumbling ($tb$) and vacillating-breathing ($vb$). A consistent higher order theory reveals a direct bifurcation from $tt$ to $tb$ if $C_a\equiv τ\dotγ$ is small enough ($τ$= vesicle relaxation time towards equilibrium shape, $\dotγ$=shear rate). At larger $C_a$ the $tb$ is preceded by the $vb$ mode. For $C_a\gg 1$ we recover the leading order original calculation, where the $vb$ mode coexists with $tb$. The consistent calculation reveals several quantitative discrepancies with recent works, and points to new features. We…
The use of tank-treading as a means of propulsion for microswimmers in viscous shear flows is taken into exam. We discuss the possibility that a vesicle be able to control the drift in an external shear flow, by varying locally the bending rigidity of its own membrane. By analytical calculation in the quasi-spherical limit, the stationary shape and the orientation of the tank-treading vesicle in the external flow, are determined, working to lowest order in the membrane inhomogeneity. The membrane inhomogeneity acts in the shape evolution equation as an additional force term, that can be used t…
In this work, the nonlinear dynamics of a fully three-dimensional multicomponent vesicle in shear flow are explored. Using a volume- and area-conserving projection method coupled to a gradient-augmented level set and surface phase method, the dynamics are systematically studied as a function of the membrane bending rigidity difference between the components, the speed of diffusion compared to the underlying shear flow, and the strength of the phase domain energy compared to the bending energy. Using a pre-segregated vesicle, three dynamics are observed: stationary phase, phase-treading, and a …
The hydrodynamic interaction of two deformable vesicles in shear flow induces a net displacement, in most cases an increase of their distance in the transverse direction. The statistical average of these interactions leads to shear-induced diffusion in the suspension, both at the level of individual particles which experience a random walk made of successive interactions, and at the level of suspension where a non-linear down-gradient diffusion takes place, an important ingredient in the structuring of suspension flows. We make an experimental and computational study of the interaction of a pa…
The stretched exponential function, $\exp[-(t/τ_{K})^β]$, describes various relaxation processes while it has been suggested that the power exponent, $β$ is derived from the non-uniformity of the process. In this paper, we attempted to estimate this non-uniformity by introducing Shannon entropy. Shannon entropy evaluates the average information contents of the distribution function, which reflects statistical homogeneity. We investigated the relaxation process of shear induced multilamellar system, which is described with the stretched exponential function. Three types of shear (constant, squa…
The dynamic shape relaxation of the two-layer-vesicle is calculated. In additional to the undulation relaxation where the two bilayers move in the same direction, the squeezing mode appears when the gap between the two bilayers is small. At large gap, the inner vesicle relaxes much faster, whereas the slow mode is mainly due to the outer layer relaxation. We have calculated the viscoelasticity of the dilute two-layer-vesicle suspension. It is found that for small gap, the applied shear drives the undulation mode strongly while the slow squeezing mode is not much excited. In this limit the comp…
Recent experiments have shown that when a near-hemispherical lipid vesicle attached to a solid surface is subjected to a simple shear flow it exhibits a pattern of membrane circulation much like a dipole vortex. This is in marked contrast to the toroidal circulation that would occur in the related problem of a drop of immiscible fluid attached to a surface and subjected to shear. This profound difference in flow patterns arises from the lateral incompressibility of the membrane, which restricts the observable flows to those in which the velocity field in the membrane is two-dimensionally diver…
Vesicles are becoming a quite popular model for the study of red blood cells (RBCs). This is a free boundary problem which is rather difficult to handle theoretically. Quantitative computational approaches constitute also a challenge. In addition, with numerical studies, it is not easy to scan within a reasonable time the whole parameter space. Therefore, having quantitative analytical results is an essential advance that provides deeper understanding of observed features and can be used to accompany and possibly guide further numerical development. In this paper shape evolution equations for …
Hypothesis Ferrihydrite (Fh) nanoparticles are receiving considerable scientific interest due to their large reactive surface areas, crystalline structures, and nanoparticle morphology. They are of great importance in biogeochemical processes and have the ability to sequester hazardous and toxic substances. Here, the working hypothesis was to entrap fractal-like Fh nanoparticles, with a radius of gyration of 6.2 nm and a primary building block of polydisperse spheres with a radius of 0.8 nm, in a shear-induced multilamellar vesicle (MLV) state using a 40 wt.% polyethylene glycol dodecyl ether …
The process of fission and vesicle formation depends on the geometry of the membrane that will split. For instance, a flat surface finds it difficult to form vesicles because of the lack of curved regions where to start the process. Here we show that vesicle formation can be promoted by temperature, by using a membrane phase field model with Gaussian curvature. We find a phase transition between fluctuating and vesiculation phases that depends on temperature, spontaneous curvature, and the ratio between bending and Gaussian moduli. We analysed the energy dynamical behaviour of these processes …
The dynamics of an adhesive two-dimensional vesicle doublet under various flow conditions is investigated numerically using a high-order, adaptive-in-time boundary integral method. In a quiescent flow, two nearby vesicles move slowly towards each other under the adhesive potential, pushing out fluid between them to form a vesicle doublet at equilibrium. A lubrication analysis on such draining of a thin film gives the dependencies of draining time on adhesion strength and separation distance that are in good agreement with numerical results. In a planar extensional flow we find a stable vesicle…
A coarse-grained bead-spring-dashpot chain model with the dashpots representing the presence of internal friction, is solved exactly numerically, for the case of chains with more than two beads. Using a decoupling procedure to remove the explicit coupling of a bead's velocity with that of its nearest neighbors, the governing set of stochastic differential equations are solved with Brownian dynamics simulations to obtain material functions in oscillatory and steady simple shear flow. Simulation results for the real and imaginary components of the complex viscosity have been compared with the re…
We perform Brownian dynamics simulations of semiflexible colloidal sheets with hydrodynamic interactions and thermal fluctuations in shear flow. As a function of the ratio of bending rigidity to shear energy (a dimensionless quantity we denote $S$) and the ratio of bending rigidity to thermal energy, we observe a dynamical transition from stochastic flipping to crumpling and continuous tumbling. This dynamical transition is broadened by thermal fluctuations, and the value of $S$ at which it occurs is consistent with the onset of chaotic dynamics found for athermal sheets. The effects of differ…
The study of vesicles under flow, a model system for red blood cells (RBCs), is an essential step in understanding various intricate dynamics exhibited by RBCs in vivo and in vitro. Quantitative 3D analyses of vesicles under flow are presented. The regions of parameters to produce tumbling (TB), tank-treating (TT), vacillating-breathing (VB) {and even Kayaking (K)} modes are determined. New qualitative features are found: (i) a significant widening of the VB mode region in parameter space upon increasing shear rate $\dotγ$ and (ii) a striking robustness of period of TB and VB with $\dotγ$. Ana…
We solve the dynamic equations of motion for a growing semi-flexible polymer, or fiber, approaching a fluctuating membrane at an angle. At late times we find three different regimes: fiber {\em stalling}, when fiber growth stops due to membrane resistence, {\em run-away}, in which the polymer bends away from the membrane, and another regime in which the membrane response is nonlinear and tubular membrane {\em spicules} are formed. We discuss which regions of the resulting `phase diagram' are explored by (i) single and bundled actin fibers in living cells, (ii) sickle hemoglobin fibers in red b…
The migration of a suspended vesicle in an unbounded Poiseuille flow is investigated numerically in the low Reynolds number limit. We consider the situation without viscosity contrast between the interior of the vesicle and the exterior. Using the boundary integral method we solve the corresponding hydrodynamic flow equations and track explicitly the vesicle dynamics in two dimensions. We find that the interplay between the nonlinear character of the Poiseuille flow and the vesicle deformation causes a cross-streamline migration of vesicles towards the center of the Poiseuille flow. This is in…
We propose a phenomenological model for the multi-lamellar vesicles (onions) formation induced by shear flow. In a nonionic surfactant (C$_{12}$E$_4$) system, onion phases under a fixed shear flow within a certain range show the order-disorder transition accompanied with a size jump by changing temperature. Our model can simulate ordered and disordered onion phases with different onion sizes. We show numerical results of the onion formation simulated by the model and also discuss what factors in this system are critical to cause the transition between these two different onion phases.
Theory and simulation of Brownian colloids suspended in an implicit solvent, with the hydrodynamics of the fluid accounted for by effective interactions between the colloids, are shown to yield a marked and hitherto unobserved discrepancy between the viscosity calculated from the average shear stress under an imposed shear rate in the Stokesian regime and the viscosity extracted by the Green-Kubo formalism from the auto-correlations of thermal stress fluctuations in quiescent equilibrium. We show that agreement between both methods is recovered by accounting for the fluctuating Brownian stress…
Vesicles are involved in a vast variety of transport processes in living organisms. Additionally, they serve as a model for the dynamics of cell suspensions. Predicting the rheological properties of their suspensions is still an open question, as even the interaction of pairs is yet to be fully understood. Here we analyse the effect of a single vesicle, undergoing tank-treading motion, on its surrounding shear flow by studying the induced disturbance field $δ\vec{V}$, the difference between the velocity field in its presence and absence. The comparison between experiments and numerical simulat…
We present a hybrid numerical method to introduce hydrodynamics in dynamic self-consistent field (SCF) studies of inhomogeneous polymer systems. It solves a set of coupled dynamical equations: The Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid flow, and SCF-based convection-diffusion equations for the evolution of the local monomer compositions. The Navier-Stokes equaitons are simulated by the lattice Boltzmann method and the dynamic self-consistent equations are solved by a finite difference scheme. Two applications are presented: First, we study microphase separation in symmetric and asymmetric block…
Shear-flow-induced structure formation in surfactant-water mixtures is investigated numerically using a meshless-membrane model in combination with a particle-based hydrodynamics simulation approach for the solvent. At low shear rates, uni-lamellar vesicles and planar lamellae structures are formed at small and large membrane volume fractions, respectively. At high shear rates, lamellar states exhibit an undulation instability, leading to rolled or cylindrical membrane shapes oriented in the flow direction. The spatial symmetry and structure factor of this rolled state agree with those of inte…
We review the dynamical behavior of giant fluid vesicles in various types of external hydrodynamic flow. The interplay between stresses arising from membrane elasticity, hydrodynamic flows, and the ever present thermal fluctuations leads to a rich phenomenology. In linear flows with both rotational and elongational components, the properties of the tank-treading and tumbling motions are now well described by theoretical and numerical models. At the transition between these two regimes, strong shape deformations and amplification of thermal fluctuations generate a new regime called trembling. I…
Despite its significance in microfluidics, the effect of confinement on the transition from the tank-treading (steady motion) to the tumbling (unsteady motion) dynamical state of deformable micro-particles has not been studied in detail. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of a single viscous vesicle under confining shear as a general model system for red blood cells, capsules, or viscous droplets. The transition from tank-treading to tumbling motion can be triggered by the ratio between internal and external fluid viscosities. Here, we show that the transition can be induced solely by …
We report on the rheology of a lamellar lyotropic surfactant solution (SDS/dodecane/pentanol/water), and identify a discontinuous transition between two shear thinning regimes which correspond to the low stress lamellar phase and the more viscous shear induced multi-lamellar vesicle, or ``onion'' phase. We study in detail the flow curve, stress as a function of shear rate, during the transition region, and present evidence that the region consists of a shear banded phase where the material has macroscopically separated into bands of lamellae and onions stacked in the vorticity direction. We in…
We study the effect of shear flow on the entropic Helfrich interaction in lyotropic surfactant smectic fluids. Arguing that flow induces an effective anisotropic surface tension in bilayers due to a combination of intermonolayer friction, bilayer collisions and convection, we calculate the reduction in fluctuations and hence the renormalised change in effective compression modulus and steady-state layer spacing. We demonstrate that non-permeable or slowly permeating membranes can be susceptible to a undulatory instability of the Helfrich-Hurault type, and speculate that such an instability cou…
The steady state properties of an interface in a stationary Couette flow are addressed within the framework of fluctuating hydrodynamics. Our study reveals that thermal fluctuations are driven out of equilibrium by an effective shear rate that differs from the applied one. In agreement with experiments, we find that the mean square displacement of the interface is strongly reduced by the flow. We also show that nonequilibrium fluctuations present a certain degree of universality in the sense that all features of the fluids can be factorized into a single control parameter. Finally, the results…
In this work, we present two types of microfluidic chips involving magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in cyclohexane with oleic acid. In the first case, the hydrophobically coated nanoparticles are self-assembled with an amphiphilic diblock copolymer by a double-emulsion process in order to prepare giant magnetic vesicles (polymersomes) in one step and at a high throughput. It was shown in literature that such diblock copolymer W/O/W emulsion droplets can evolve into polymersomes made of a thin (nanometric) magnetic membrane through a dewetting transition of the oil phase from the aqueous intern…
Brownian dynamics of a self-propelled particle in linear shear flow is studied analytically by solving the Langevin equation and in simulation. The particle has a constant propagation speed along a fluctuating orientation and is additionally subjected to a constant torque. In two spatial dimensions, the mean trajectory and the mean square displacement (MSD) are calculated as functions of time t analytically. In general, the mean trajectories are cycloids that are modified by finite temperature effects. With regard to the MSD different regimes are identified where the MSD scales with t^a with a…
We analyze the behavior of supercooled fluids under shear both theoretically and numerically. Theoretically, we generalize the mode-coupling theory of supercooled fluids to systems under stationary shear flow. Our starting point is the set of generalized fluctuating hydrodynamic equations with a convection term. A nonlinear integro-differential equation for the intermediate scattering function is constructed. This theory is applied to a two-dimensional colloidal suspension. The shear rate dependence of the intermediate scattering function and the shear viscosity is analyzed. We have also perfo…
