This is a review paper invited by the journal "Classical ad Quantum Gravity" for a "Cluster Issue" on approaches to quantum gravity. I give a synthetic presentation of loop gravity. I spell-out the aims of the theory and compare the results obtained with the initial hopes that motivated the early interest in this research direction. I give my own perspective on the status of the program and attempt of a critical evaluation of its successes and limits.
We construct new solutions of five-dimensional quadratic gravity as direct products of a constant curvature two-surface with a solution of three-dimensional new massive gravity with constant scalar curvature. These solutions could represent near-horizon limits of five-dimensional asymptotically flat black strings or black rings. A number of these non-asymptotically flat solutions are themselves black strings or rings. A by-product of our analysis is the construction of new solutions of four-dimensional quadratic gravity obtained by toroidal reduction of the five-dimensional solutions with flat…
We consider spatially homogeneous Lifshitz black hole solutions in five dimensional higher derivative gravity theories, which can be possible near horizon geometries of some systems that are interesting in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. We show the solutions belonging to the nine Bianchi classes in the pure R^2 gravity. We find that these black holes have zero entropy at non-zero temperatures and this property is the same as the case of BTZ black holes in new massive gravity at the critical point. In the most general quadratic curvature gravity theories, we find new solutions in Bianc…
We study teleparallel gravity in five-dimensional spacetime with particular discussions on Kaluza-Klein (KK) and braneworld theories. We directly perform the dimensional reduction by differential forms. In the braneworld theory, the teleparallel gravity formalism in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmology is equivalent to GR due to the same Friedmann equation, whereas in the KK case the reduction of our formulation does not recover the effect as GR of 4-dimensional spacetime.
Eguchi-Hanson solitons are odd-dimensional generalizations of the four-dimensional Eguchi-Hanson metric and are asymptotic to AdS$_5$\mathbb{Z}_p$ when the cosmological constant is either positive or negative. We find soliton solutions to Lovelock gravity in 5 dimensions that are generalizations of these objects.
We construct generalizations of the D=5 Kerr black string by including higher curvature corrections to the gravity action in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet density. These uniform black strings satisfy a generalised Smarr relation and share the basic properties of the Einstein gravity solutions. However, they exist only up to a maximal value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, which depends on the solutions' mass and angular momentum.
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity (EGB) provides a natural higher dimensional and higher order curvature generalization of Einstein gravity. It contains a new, presumably microscopic, length scale that should affect short distance properties of the dynamics, such as Choptuik scaling. We present the results of a numerical analysis in generalized flat slice co-ordinates of self-gravitating massless scalar spherical collapse in five and six dimensional EGB gravity near the threshold of black hole formation. Remarkably, the behaviour is universal (i.e. independent of initial data) but qualitatively di…
We study the problem of a four-dimensional brane lying in the five-dimensional degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Nariai) black hole, in five-dimensional $F(R)$-gravity. We show that there cannot exist the brane in the Nariai bulk space except the case that the brane tension vanishes. We demonstrate that the five-dimensional Nariai bulk is unstable in a large region of the parameter space. In particular, the Nariai bulk can have classical (anti-)evaporation instabilities. The bulk instability back-reacts on the four-dimensional brane, in case that the brane tension vanishes, and the unstable …
We construct a new class of stationary exact solutions to five-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The solutions are based on four-dimensional self-dual Atiyah-Hitchin geometry. We find analytical solutions to the five-dimensional metric function that are regular everywhere. We find some constraints on the possible physical solutions by investigating the solutions numerically. We also study the behavior of the solutions in the extremal limits of the Atiyah-Hitchin geometry. In the extremal limits, the Atiyah-Hitchin metric reduces to a bolt structure and Euclidean Taub-NUT space, respec…
We consider the five-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, which can be obtained by means of an apropriate choice of coeficients in the five-dimensional Lanczos-Lovelock gravity theory. The Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet field equations for the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric are found as well as some of their solutions. A four-dimensional gravity action is obtained from the Gauss-Bonnet gravity using the Randall-Sundrum compactification procedure and then it is studied the implications of the compactification procedure in the cosmological solutions. The same procedure is used to obtain…
We investigate the canonical structure of the bosonic sector of the unique maximal supergravity theory in five dimensions that is manifestly invariant under the global action of E$_{6(6)}(\mathbb{R})$. Starting from the Lagrangian formulation of the theory we construct the Hamiltonian formulation and the full set of canonical constraints. We determine all gauge transformations and compute the algebra formed by the canonical constraints under the Poisson bracket. We re-derive the number of physical degrees of freedom and construct the extended Hamiltonian, describing the most general time evolu…
We consider a spherically symmetric internal solution within the context of Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity and derive a generalized five-dimensional Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation. It is shown that the generalized TOV equation leads, in a certain limit, to the standard five-dimensional TOV equation
Junction conditions for vacuum solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity are studied. We focus on those cases where two spherically symmetric regions of space-time are joined in such a way that the induced stress tensor on the junction surface vanishes. So a spherical vacuum shell, containing no matter, arises as a boundary between two regions of the space-time. Such solutions are a generalized kind of spherically symmetric empty space solutions, described by metric functions of the class $C^0$. New global structures arise with surprising features. In particular, we show that…
We present a new cubic theory of gravity in five dimensions which has second order traced field equations, analogous to BHT new massive gravity in three dimensions. Moreover, for static spherically symmetric spacetimes all the field equations are of second order, and the theory admits a new asymptotically locally flat black hole. Furthermore, we prove the uniqueness of this solution, study its thermodynamical properties, and show the existence of a C-function for the theory following the arguments of Anber and Kastor (arXiv:0802.1290 [hep-th]) in pure Lovelock theories. Finally, we include the…
Main results of our recent investigations on five-dimensional scenarios of massive (bi-)gravity will be summarized in this article. In particular, we will show how to construct higher dimensional massive graviton terms from the characteristic equation of square matrix, which is a consequence of the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. Then, we will show whether massive graviton terms of five-dimensional massive (bi-)gravity behave as effective cosmological constants for a number of physical metrics compatible with fiducial ones such as the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker, Bianchi type I, and Schwarzsc…
In this paper, we consider the Einstein-massive gravity coupled to the Yang-Mills gauge field in five dimensions. Concentrating on the static solutions with planar horizon geometry, we explore the thermodynamic behavior in the extended phase space and examine the validity of the first law of thermodynamics besides local thermal stability by the Hessian matrix. We observe that although the topology of boundary is planar, there exists the van der Waals like phase transition for this kind of solution. We find the critical quantities and discuss how the massive and Yang-Mills parameters affect the…

Ambitwistor strings are chiral (holomorphic) strings whose target is the space of complex null geodesics, ambitwistor space. We introduce twistor representations of ambitwistor space in 6 and 5 dimensions. In 6d the twistor representation is naturally conformally invariant. Anomaly cancellation leads to models that describe biadjoint scalar amplitudes and certain conformally invariant gauge and gravity theories, respectively of 4$^{\rm th}$ and 6$^{\rm th}$ order. There are three such models, reflecting triality for the conformal group SO(8) associated to these 6d models. On reduction to five …
We initiated the program to look for new and simple forms for the five-dimensional rotating squashed black holes by solving directly the equation of motion. In a recent paper, the metric ansatz of dimensional reduction along the fifth spatial dimension was used to obtain a new but rather simple form for the five-dimensional rotating uncharged black hole solution with squashed horizons via solving the vacuum Einstein field equations. In this work, we continue to seek for another new but relatively simple form for the neutral rotating squashed black hole solution by using a different metric ansa…
The metric $f(R)$ theories of gravity are generalized to five-dimensional spacetimes. By assuming a hypersurface-orthogonal Killing vector field representing the compact fifth dimension, the five-dimensional theories are reduced to their four-dimensional formalism. Then we study the cosmology of a special class of $f(R)=αR^m$ models in a spatially flat FRW spacetime. It is shown that the parameter $m$ can be constrained to a certain range by the current observed deceleration parameter, and its lower bound corresponds to the Kaluza-Klein theory. It turns out that both expansion and contraction …
In this article, we explore the holographic Q-picture description for the charged rotating black holes in the five-dimensional minimal supergravity. The central charge in the Q-picture depends only on black hole charge, therefore can be computed from the near horizon geometry of the extremal and non-rotating counterpart. Moreover, the CFT temperatures can be identified by studying the hidden conformal symmetry, and the related gravity-CFT dictionary can be translated via thermodynamics analysis. The entropy and absorption cross section computed from both gravity and CFT sides properly agree wi…
We obtain a new kind of $F(^{(4)}\!R,φ)$ modified gravity theory as an effective four-dimensional (4D) theory derived from $f(^{(5)}\!R)$ gravity in five dimensions (5D). This new theory exhibits a different matter coupling than the one in BBHL theory. We show that the field equations of the Wesson's induced matter theory and of some braneworld scenarios can be obtained as maximally symmetric solutions of the $f(^{(5)}\!R)$ theory. We found criteria for the Goldov-Kawasaki instabilities for both the $f(^{(5)}\!R)$ and the $F(^{(4)}\!R,φ)$ theories. We demonstrate that under certain conditions …
We study the Hamiltonian dynamics of a five-dimensional Chern-Simons theory for the gauge algebra $C_5$ of Izaurieta, Rodriguez and Salgado, the so-called S$_H$-expansion of the 5D (anti-)de Sitter algebra (a)ds, based on the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_4$. The theory consists of a 1-form field containing the (a)ds gravitation variables and 1-form field transforming in the adjoint representation of (a)ds. The gravitational part of the action necessarily contains a term quadratic in the curvature, beyond the Einstein-Hilbert and cosmological terms, for any choice of the two independent coupling co…
A 5-dimensional gravity theory, motivated by the brane world picture, with factorisable metric and with Kaluza scalar $G_{55}(r)$, is shown to give rise to a positive contribution to the Raychaudhuri equation. This inhibits the focusing of geodesics and possibly cause non-focusing of the geodesics. This feature is translated into the situation in which the universe has an infinite age and hence no beginning avoiding the big bang singularity.
The Buchdahl limit for static spherically symmetric isotropic stars is generalised to the case of five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Our result depends on the sign of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$. When $α>0$, we find, unlike in general relativity, that the bound is dependent on the stellar structure, in particular the central energy density. We find that stable stellar structures can exist arbitrarily close to the event horizon. Thus stable stars can exist with extra mass in this theory compared to five dimensional general relativity. For $α<0$ it is found that the Buchdahl bound…
We study the case in which the five dimensional theory is the transformed Weyl$-$Yang$-$Kaluza$-$Klein gravity. The dimensionally reduced equations of motion are derived by considering an alternative form of the main equation of the theory in the coordinate basis. The conformal transformation rules are applied to the invariants. We also discuss the possible specific cases and the new Lorentz force density term, in detail.
We investigate the localization of metastable four-dimensional gravity around a bent dilatonic brane, embedded into a five-dimensional space, that exists only up to distances sufficiently small compared to a crossover scale. Far from such scale, five-dimensional effects strongly deviate the Newtonian potential. We study this effect by considering localization of massive gravity on a non-BPS bent dilatonic 3-brane solution of a five-dimensional supergravity. Our results show that the cosmological constant on the bent brane controls the size of the crossover scale. For sufficiently small positiv…
In this paper, we will analyze a five-dimensional Yang-Mills black hole solution in massive gravity's rainbow. We will also investigate the flow of such a solution with scale. Then, we will discuss the scale dependence of the thermodynamics for this black hole. Also, we study the criticality in the extended phase space by treating the cosmological constant as the thermodynamics pressure of this black hole solution. Moreover, we will use the partition function for this solution to obtaining corrections to the thermodynamics of this system and examine their key role on the behavior of corrected …
Considering a five-dimensional (5D) Riemannian spacetime with a particular stationary Ricci-flat metric, we obtain in the framework of the induced matter theory an effective 4D static and spherically symmetric metric which give us ordinary gravitatory solutions on small (planetary and astrophysical) scales, but repulsive (antigravity) forces on very large (cosmological) scales with ω= -1. Our approach is an unified manner to describe dark energy, dark matter and ordinary matter. We illustrate the theory with two examples, the solar system and the great attractor. From the geometrical point of …
This article provides some historical background and then reviews developments in string theory over the last twenty-five years or so. Both perturbative and non-perturbative approaches to string theory are surveyed and their impact on how we view quantum gravity is analysed.
In this paper, we have considered gravity in a 5-dimensional warped product space-time with a time-dependent warp factor, time-dependent extra dimension and a bulk cosmological constant. The braneworld is described by a spatially flat FRW-type metric. The five-dimensional field equations have been constructed and solved for various cases of the warp factor and the extra-dimensional scale factor, starting from very general type of the metric and then reducing down to specific cases. In the low energy regime, a stabilized bulk with constant curvature has been considered, from which the cosmologi…
In the five dimensional Kaluza Klein (KK) theory there is a well known class of static and electromagnetic--free KK--equations characterized by a naked singularity behavior, namely the Generalized Schwarzschild solution (GSS). We present here a set of interior solutions of five dimensional KK--equations. These equations have been numerically integrated to match the GSS in the vacuum. The solutions are candidates to describe the possible interior perfect fluid source of the exterior GSS metric and thus they can be models for stars for static, neutral astrophysical objects in the ordinary (four …
Inspired by a recent ghost-free nonlinear massive gravity in four-dimensional spacetime, we study its higher dimensional scenarios. As a result, we are able to show the constant-like behavior of massive graviton terms for some well-known metrics such as the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker, Bianchi type I, and Schwarzschild-Tangherlini-(A)dS metrics in a specific five-dimensional nonlinear massive gravity under an assumption that its fiducial metrics are compatible with physical ones. In addition, some simple cosmological solutions of the five-dimensional massive gravity will be figured out…
The generalized $f(R)$ gravity with curvature-matter coupling in five-dimensional (5D) spacetime can be established by assuming a hypersurface-orthogonal spacelike Killing vector field of 5D spacetime, and it can be reduced to the 4D formulism of FRW universe. This theory is quite general and can give the corresponding results to the Einstein gravity, $f(R)$ gravity with both no-coupling and non-minimal coupling in 5D spacetime as special cases, that is, we would give the some new results besides previous ones given by Ref.\cite{60}. Furthermore, in order to get some insight into the effects o…
We establish a precise relation between mixed boundary conditions for scalar fields in asymptotically anti de Sitter spacetimes and the equation of state of the dual fluid. We provide a detailed derivation of the relation in the case of five bulk-dimensions for scalar fields saturating the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. As a concrete example, we discuss the five dimensional scalar-tensor theories describing a constant speed of sound.
We present a kind of generalized Vaidya solutions of a new cubic gravity in five dimensions whose field equations in spherically spacetime are always second order like the Lovelock gravity. We also study the thermodynamics of its apparent horizon and get its entropy expression and generalized Misner-Sharp energy. Finally we present the first law and second law hold in this gravity. Although all the results are analogue to those in Lovelock gravity, we in fact introduce the contribution of new cubic term in five dimensions where cubic Lovelock term is just zero.
